when COD 4 Modern Warfare dropped it was just that Modern Warfare. Real guns and maps inspired by real places. Halo was the leader in FPS's before this. All the crazy guns, vehicles, and massive maps. Also Halo has the jumping. The fucking annoying jumping. COD had none of that. But releasing a new game every year kind of fucked them. They needed new ideas for every game. So they slowly started going more Halo. They added the double jumps and exo boosts. Fuck all that. Give me modern warfare and not Halo.

At the end of the day Call Of Duty was about you being a very specific kind of action hero. Not a space ninja like Titanfall, not gritty Star Ship trooper movie like Gears, not a hardened "ive seen things, and the only family I know are the men in my unit' soldier in Battlefield.
When COD is at it's best you're the hardened motherfucker smoking a cigarette, sniping bogeys at 100 meters smoothly transitioning into meticulously picking off 3 dudes that bumrush your room, to go save a couple of POW's. Perhaps call in a helicopter or five to rain down death on those badguys.
Its for that hilariously irresponsible era where war movies transitioned from 70's realism into 80's Arnold Schwarzenegger pop..COD had that perfect line of making war fun, for better or for worse.

... and a week after BF1.
They wanted to occupy the playerbase for the upcoming COD release and it looks like they succeeded. Overwatch helped with this too.
It probably also doesn't help that Activision's insisted on the yearly release schedule for over a decade now. That's basically been their MO for their biggest hits.

But with how busy I've been this fall it's given me that time to sit back and just recklessly kill. Not a great game but serves it's purpose. Really considering making the jump to Battlefield.
