"The Division (beta)"

Got a code from here -

https://contests.nvidia.com/en-us/the-division-beta-key-giveaway

Then went to the division site and I'm waiting on my access key from them.

Beta starts today on Xbox One and tomorrow on PC & PS4

Heard the comparisons to Destiny and about how the developers looked closely at what Bungie did well or fucked up on (which they did a lot) to hopefully create a good game/experience.

Can't wait for full release now. Tomorrow I'll try it out on PC and PS4.

Did the first instance on hard mode today with one other person and it's so much more difficult than normal and actually forces you to use strategy against the AI that flank the hell out of you.

Seems like they improved on a few things Destiny got wrong.

AI that have names drop better gear, may not play right if all you have to do is have a well placed headshot to one shot them and gear up. It's more about surviving the encounters which I'm cool with. The battles are more drawn out but the rewards at the end make them worth it.

It does feel strange shooting someone in the face and only taking off a little health, but you gotta remind yourself that this isn't just a straight forward shooter. Think of some zones as MMO dungeons where surviving the encounter plus dealing enough damage is what gets you through and wins you gear.

In a game like Destiny you don't feel bad knowing you have to pump entire mags into guys that look like monsters.

This having humans kinda throws you off a bit. It is quite fun tho.

stalking people playing by themselves or those weird standoffs with another group trying to use the extractions and not knowing if someone is about go start busting off shots. I'm finding that too often you accidentally shoot some random guy in the middle of a gunfight against rogues and end up getting rogue status yourself.

It's very fun. The gameplay takes some getting used to but it more tactical gameplay is a nice change of pace after Destiny. I need to play with a friend or two to fully judge but it feels like a nice start to a new franchise the little I played.

Teams of rouges going around and stalking extractions like no tomorrow. Its fun to play through though. I just finished playing the story and I like it. So far it seems they'll spawn enough random NPC's to fight on the way to missions/free roam to keep you busy. I definitely see how having a team to complete the game is advantageous and I enjoy that.

I'm excited for the game.

Love the fact there is proximity chat.

Had my squad with me and rolled up on an extraction point, was two other people in another group and they looked mad nervous. We told them to be cool, don't start no shit wont be none.

They agreed to watch over the extraction point with us so we could send our gear out without worry of someone trying to jump us. Cool. Helicopter comes in, two guys from my team extract while we stand watch. We tell them to go in and send theirs up next.

On their way to the helicopter we turn full heel, and riddle them both with bullets and grenades. One dude is in revive mode, so he's just crawling. Nobody is going to revive him though, his friend is dead. We put him out of his misery quick, take all their items, and extract them out of the DZ. Then we leave so they can't retaliate.

This my city nigga, errybody know it.

If you had the closed beta game downloaded and didn't delete it you should be good, they were doing updates this week for next weeks open beta.

I got the closed beta on my PS4 a little too late and by the time it actually downloaded it was over.

Still undecided what system I will get this on.

Well I really want it for PC, but most of my friends are on console.

PS4 I'm not really sure if people will be on as much as I'd like. With XB1 I just text a few friends and they can play whenever, been playing with these cats since xbox live came out.

Got in a few hours today on the ps4.
Thought it was cool, liked it a lot.
The grenade mechanism could be improved, I found it a little confusing at first. Also the bullet sponge is really real. It def poses an issue like a guy with a bat is running at you and you unload 2 clips and he doesn't even budge.

Overall though, fun game especially if you have a squad. Playing solo although fun, can be a bit challenging. Didn't venture too much into the DZ. Leaving that for tomorrow. Add me if you want to run - migmittens

LMAO

Maybe when The Taken King expansion came around, but I don't recall anyone talking about the story in Destiny. Maybe the lack of it and a whole lot of people wanting more. But the first release of Destiny had very little story to it, and the story it did have with confusing as hell.

This game is going to be monotonous as shit.

There's far, far, more stuff to do than in Destiny but it's all BS.

Any thinking of waiting should wait until more expansions come out that raise the level cap.

Most people hit the level cap a week after the game releases.

Combat is boring, enemy AI sucks, and level design needs work.

Guns all sound the same.

Not being able to aim down the scope is BS.

Character customization needs work.

The city needs more weather variations besides snowing, not snowing, blizzard, and day/night cycles.

This game gave me a headache on multiple occasions.

>Most people hit the level cap a week after the game releases.

Everything that has a level cap, has people hitting it in the first week. The die hard players will always set everything aside so they can hit max level as fast as they can.

>Combat is boring, enemy AI sucks, and level design needs
>work.

Hard mode you can easily get overwhelmed. Even fighting the AI in the DZ, if they have the yellow health bars you can't just go in, they will flank you and flush you out.

>Not being able to aim down the scope is BS.

Did you miss the prompt telling you how to do it? Click the thumb stick. You can't with iron sights, but its a third person game so you normally can't. Anything with a scope you can ADS

>Character customization needs work.

It's a beta, you can't customize characters, just randomized pre created guys

>The city needs more weather variations besides snowing, not
>snowing, blizzard, and day/night cycles.

Beta

>This game gave me a headache on multiple occasions.

Sounds like you may have played alone non stop. Maybe it just ain't for you.

34. "can anyone speak on the "RPG numbers flying out of humans" dissonance?"
In response to Reply # 0

disclaimer: i'm never going to play this game. nothing about it appeals to me. however i can see how other people would enjoy it. it's a good-looking game, the shooting seems fine, and the dopamine drip-feed progression systems look solid

what i'm most interested in is the the potential disconnect between the diablo/destiny/borderlands/jrpg-style damage feedback in a realistically rendered and presented world. that's fascinating to me. suspending one's disbelief seems to be easier if numbers are flying out of cel-shaded monsters, alien beings, or hell spawn in fantastical locations. it's what people who have played video games are used to. but historically big colorful numbers flying out of bodies aren't found in games that skew more photo-realistic and specifically ones that feature humans occupying detailed and believable environments that humans are known to inhabit. i'm sure there are some exceptions to my claim but i can't think of any at the moment. it seems like ubi took great care to present this video game world in a very realistic manner. animations are believable, the physics gifs i've seen of this game are very convincing, and i've seen many people praising /the divison/'s version of New York City as one of the most realitic presentations of NYC ever in a video game. contrasting that with bright numbers flying out of humans seems completely bonkers

i caught a front page stream of this game on twitch the other night. i watched for a few minutes and saw the player shoot another human (most likely an NPC) in the head 6 or 7 times without defeating it. i knew it was a video game and i'd seen things like that in video games countless times but for some reason this particular instance seemed crazy. that kind of cognitive dissonance seems nearly impossible to overcome; i know it would be a huge barrier for me if i were to start playing the game

Think World of Warcarft. It's an mmorpg which has you hitting bosses with different spells several times throughout long and drawn out fights. The players demanded to see what kind of damage each and every basic hit and spell were doing. The result is several add-ons being created that displays numbers on the screen so players can know exactly how much damage or healing they're doing at exact times. I believe they may have added this option into the core game to please the players who like these numbers.

The Division is an open world RPG style shooter, and while it may seem crazy that shooting someone in the head with a sniper riffle would't kill them, we have to remember that no boss, or no enemy that requires group effort should ever be taken out with one shot. We also need to know with the numbers exactly how much damage is being done to each part we hit. Do we get higher damage on limbs, body, or head shots? It's the satisfaction of going "holy shit this M4 does X amount of damage when I shoot at Y". Add a modification, or item to buff you for a duration, number goes up. The result is everyone maximizing their potential and minimizing the amount of time it takes. Boss goes down, better loot drops, wash, rinse, repeat.

You can play the numbers game in the menu as far as looking at how much DPS a weapon can do, but with so many variables like missing shots (thus causing less dps then seen in the menu), and different body parts being hit (causing more than what menu may tell you).

Edit: I may have explained more than what you're even asking lol. Simple, its the RPG element of it, which means its very hard to do a game like this and not have those numbers. It may throw some off, but the kinda people these games appeal to love the numbers game. I was a big time mmo player, so I'd lose my mind if I didn't see numbers to let me know exactly how much I'm doing so I can either be up to par or improve. If its an option, the most serious players mostly always turn it on, if its not, best believe their are user created addons that'll do this.

c'mon

i guess what i was asking in the most roundabout way was, "does it ever not seem weird?"

i can't recall another game that was presented so realistically featuring humans in believable human environments with very video-gamey things like of large neon numbers flying out of human bodies and humans taking half a dozen headshots to kill. that contrast is very odd to me and seems like it would take some extra suspension of disbelief to get over. but maybe you don't notice it after a few hours or if you're an experienced mmo player you don't even think about it in the first place

(Partial swipe)

Ubisoft has announced more than 6.4 million players took part in The Division's beta, which ended February 22nd. With so many players, The Division's beta is reportedly the "biggest beta ever for a new game brand on current generation platforms."

Players spent an average of five hours in the street of New York City, and two hours in The Dark Zone, the game's PvP arena. Ubisoft reported almost 50% of players turned rogue during online play. Also in the Dark Zone, players extracted over 63,309,800 contaminated items.

The Dark Zone is so much fun, Higher level NPC's to battle and then the players that go rouge and are out to jack you during extraction or just murk you on the streets to take your goods.

As far as fast travel, it's worthwhile after a while to just trek to all of the safe houses. Between them and the group mission locations that you can fast travel to, that makes the map a lot less intimidating.

Best co-op experience I've had in quite awhile. First day played for a little over 12 hours straight with some friends. Gives you a diablo type experience with the loot and upgrades and keeps you coming back for more. The lore of this game is pretty great and for once I don't mind the collectibles as they also tell a pretty deep story on how this thing spread and why the area is this way.

While you can solo the dungeons I recommend getting a group and doing them on hard mode, and after that challenge mode, as the gear rewards are greater.

Copped for xbox one since most of my friends are on there and it insures there is always someone on familiar to play with.

Dark Zone is a lot less about robbing folks and more about not letting the NPCs take you out. The Dungeons are great and like said up above it's better with a team than solo on Hard. I've yet to do a challenge but I figure this weekend I will.

I my only gripe is understanding how to equip my character to level up properly and get the most out legendary items.

In response to Reply # 45

first rule is to just equip the best gear you have at the time. Run all the story missions consecutively. That should get you to level 27. Bang the last 3 levels out doing side missions and not encounters. Focus your base leveling as much as you can into 1 wing. Fill the other wings out during end game. I hit level 30 in 24 total hours of gameplay. Forget the dark zone until you hit 30. Soon as you walk into the dark zone at level 30, your first few kills will rank you up 3 DZ levels. Save your credits as much as possible too, level 30 weapons from the advanced weapons dealer cost over 100K credits. I saw an Elite Assault rifle in there for 400K.

It's one of the many complaints folks are having with this game right now. Early on the new patch made things great , but between the hacks and people are finding and the impossible difficulty of the Incursion , it's losing its fun.

Nothing cool about running around the DZ as a 160 gear score and getting done in by cats with 250-290 gear scores that got there from exploiting some of the defects of the game.

I know Ubisoft/Massive are looking at patching these, but until then....

I put it down for a while cause I was trying to solo the end and got heartbroken.

Then I realized how low my gear score was and I was heartbroken.

Then I went to the DZ, got three good pieces of gear which were underpowered and I got heartbroken.

Then Dark Souls 3 dropped and well.....but I still play.
