The upcoming NBA2K16 cover athletes have just been revealed, along with a new story director.

In a report by USA Today, Spike Lee comes to the upcoming new instalment of the popular basketball video game franchise as story writer and director. The new Spike Lee Joint aims to add realism to the game's MyCareer mode, where players get the feel of the real life in the basketball industry.

"We follow a kid through the trials and tribulations of being a top high school player and the decisions he has to make," Lee said, via USA TODAY.

"We added MyCareer in 2012, and we've always been trying to make it more and more of a real story, like a film with drama," 2K spokesman Ryan Peters said, via USA Today. "We just told Spike, 'You transform the narrative, and we'll change that into digital polygons.' And he did that, bringing a protagonist and antagonist to the story."

Meanwhile, the official Twitter account for the NBA 2K Games revealed the cover athletes for the latest instalment of the NBA2K series. Players who will buy the game will get to choose covers between Anthony Davis, Stephen Curry, and James Harden.

New Orleans Pelicans power forward Anthony Davis gave a statement on USA Today about his chance as a cover athlete for the bestselling game franchise: "I'm guessing every one of us grew up dreaming of the moment we'd be on the cover. I've seen so many players I know head off and put on a suit with all those balls (for motion-capture duty); it looks so fun."

NBA2K16 is now available for pre-order. Players who will place their orders early on will get exclusive offers and in-game bonuses. According to a report over NBA2K16Game, a fan blog dedicated to the game, players who will pre-order will receive the "Early Tip-Off Weekend", where they will be receiving the game four days ahead of the official release date. Additionally, players will also have the following bonuses upon pre-order:

10,000 Virtual Currency (VC), this will be very helpful in unlocking many phases.

A MyTEAM VIP Package:

New-Gen & PC – 3 MyTEAM Emerald Packs each with a guaranteed Emerald player;
Prior-Gen – My TEAM Gold Booster Pack with Guaranteed Gold Player and 4 additional Gold items.

I don't play association, but online had been so bad in recent years this game went from a "must cop" to "every few years". It's a sham really, cause I think the online problems is the only thing holding this game back. I didn't even cop last year's version because of the online problems.

Just because of the servers. I buy it each year now and never play it which is sad on many levels.

i imagine that this will go about as well as the other 1,230,988,597 attempts

a couple of things to consider about this story:

notice there is no statement from spike along the lines of "i've always wanted to do this" or "i'm not familiar with the medium but i'm interested in the challenge". my guess is that 2k drove a dump truck filled with gold krugerrands to his house and deposited them on his lawn

i believe this move signals spike having entered the deniro-in-meet-the-fockers phase of his career. spike's legacy and contribution to film is sealed in stone and no amount of shitty video game power fantasy storytelling is going to tarnish that. so why not make a quick buck while you can? you're not going to live forever

2k putting so much emphasis on the story (in fact starting their media blitz with it) hints at the possibility that there may not be too many improvements to gameplay, graphics, online stability, etc. if you only have a year to make your basketball game better, why would you spend so much time, money, and effort on improving the part where you don't play basketball? i'm pretty sure 2k is officially in the "diminishing returns" part of the sports franchise cycle

this is the 3rd time in 4 years that 2k has placed a prominent and culturally relevant black artist's name on the cover of their game. who's going to be on 2k17? drake? wayne?

But, yea, as someone who doesn't play MyPlayer at all, it's a shame they aren't focusing on the gameplay and association/online association stuff nearly as much as they used to.

that guy is way overstating the breadth of options you have in that mode. also he neglected to mention the artificial per-game xp cap implemented in order to encourage spending real money to improve your virtual player. and the fact that small cosmetic changes like glasses and post-game interview attire are often far more expensive than how much it costs to raise one player attribute category by one pip. again, attempting to make the option of paying for virtual currency as appealing as possible. not very rpg-like IMO

however there are some cool things you can do in mycareer mode. my player abraham "little general" gallardo, a 7' SF, once requested a trade from the hawks at the end of his rookie season and was granted it. he went to the lakers, who then hired doc rivers as their coach. the little general and doc held a press conference together, publicly stating their intent to work together for the betterment of the franchise. a billboard was put up in the LA area advertising gallardo's move to LA and how much it was going to mean for the lakers. in the season opener, his very first appearance for the lakers, he fouled out before the 1st half was over. he went to the GM's office the next day and demanded that he be traded and that he have control over where he was going. the GM relented and the following day gallardo was traded to the LA clippers. the billboard with him in a lakers jersey is still up (at least it still appears in the "endorsements" section of the mycareer menus). gallardo routinely trash talks his teammates and calls out lebron james on twitter as being overrated. i think all of that is hilarious because it's just about the dumbest thing anyone could do in that game

if they can improve/expand on the above kind of stuff i'd be more interested in that mode. as i'm typing this i'm kind of amazed that i was able to do that in a basketball game. but the vast majority of the "rpg" gameplay/choices you're given in that mode are simply manipulating the like/dislike slider that shows how your teammates/coaches feel about you by occasionally talking to a reporter, a specific teammate, or the assistant coach

That's the funnest part of the game to me. There are just so many MVPs, Finals, All-Star appearances, etc against the computer, that I can care about. Multiplayer is all most people care about and the servers work better for the park and rec center than any of those modes.

that's why world of warcraft, dota2, league of legends, and similar games are printing their own money. the devs of the above games roll our their incremental improvements month by month over the course of their game's life instead of saving up a year's worth of incremental improvements for the sole purpose of gouging their customers (who often have zero options for buying a competing product) for another $60

But "improved online servers" isn't a feature that sells games. And the only people that care about fixing the servers, better game play or a revamped association mode are die hard gamers who are going to buy the game anyway.

I only play 82 game seasons for the most part because I don't have the time to do much else on it but it does the trick for me. Being 6 hours ahead of EST I rarely get to see much more than the beginnings of Eastern games and the last half of the latest games when I wake up so this keeps me up on teams and their tendencies.

2K originally played on that player fickleness back in 2004 by making NFL 2K5 only $20 for the original Xbox. They just needed to find an angle to get people to try their game, and it worked. 2K5 to this day still has a cult following.

The players still seem like they're moving on ice skates. The physics don't see realistic; it's too easy to score without getting much separation. The graphics aren't bad, but some of the likenesses are hit or miss.

It would be nice to a good 2K alternative tho. I hate that u can't play online right away and the servers don't get any better until months after the game is released.

The most interesting thing? One of the developers talked about playing the Spurs and Pop giving you a base set lineup. But in the playoffs if you win game 1, he's going to make adjustments in game 2. THAT type of AI is sick.

First thing I noticed, and maybe this is because I haven't played a 2K game on this current generation of systems, but the players look bigger. Like they have a depth on the court that I've yet to see in a basketball game. Zach Randolph has a presence. And look at that speed on Rose! Either way, this game is going to force my hand on a new TV and an XBOX One eventually. Don't want to hook up a 1080p system to my current TV setup.

But yeah, this looks great.

Oh, and the Career mode looks like the cutting room floor scripts of He Got Game (joking...kinda).

ultimately the game sort of felt like molasses but it also felt like the closest they'd gotten to a game that just FELT like basketball.

2K15 added some speed back but I remember there being more lag on shot releases online than there'd been in a while, and the A.I. felt a little predictable, so I got the least out of a 2K game I had in a while. Wasn't the game's fault, though, I'd been playing 2K almost exclusively for most of the PS3 generation besides games I got through Playstation Plus and had some burnout issues.

Outside of Run 'N Gun in the arcades, basketball video games play better for me left to right.
This caused issues in college cause EVERYBODY played on the 2K camera except me.
Then we'd get into debates about "camera doesn't matter", etc.

But I get why people play on the 2K camera.
Most of them probably had a Dreamcast too.

the face scan thing took like a half hour to do but it worked WAY better than 2K's last year (I've sold my camera since then). I'm not a MyPLayer person but I also enjoyed the online blacktop stuff, played more of that than the actual basketball this past week actually.

I don't quite get how it controls and haven't messed with the tutorial much. Stubborn I suppose.

But I do think the shot meter they have is a legitimate improvement on what 2K does. It just makes more sense visually even though 2K's is the more classic video game visual of a meter with a green part.
