definitely had some Tomb Raider flashbacks with the more open world and the different textures means rock climbing mechanic, but I'd certainly welcome Uncharted to take some lessons from Tomb Raider, particularly with regards to the way gunplay felt (Uncharted games have always felt like a couple of video game characters shooting at each other until one of their HP bars disappears rather than actually putting bullets into flesh) and the way Tomb Raider's arenas had plenty of openness to just run and jump around unlike Uncharted's fairly linear sets.

I ended up getting the remastered collection for the PS4 and started the first game but put it down because the game felt outdated (aiming, controls, etc.) Doesn't help I was playing the new Tomb Raider at the same time.

Should I skip the second one and just play the third one?

the first is definitely the worst as far as game mechanics go, but from what i remember they just get better each outing. i personally wouldn't skip the 2nd. i love all 3, but only went back and replayed 2 and 3, never the first. 2 and 3 i've played though probably 3 times each over the years, but sold them with the ps3 a few years ago.

Uncharted 1 I have fond memories of for the first hour or two due to a demo I played obsessively when I first got my PS3 but couldn't afford any games for it. However it hasn't aged well and a lot of its gameplay is stuck in the PS2 era which clashes with graphics that, especially if you're playing the remaster, still hold up today.

Uncharted 2 is a total thrill ride with a HORRIBLE final chapter that is a real chore to get through, something it actually shares with Uncharted 1. It's a real shame because otherwise Uncharted 2 is still the gold standard when it comes to set piece-based video games. It is a very linear experience but it is constantly throwing amazing sights at you.

That said, Uncharted 3 gets a bum rap because it doesn't refine the gameplay much from Uncharted 2, and those who waited a couple years for it seemed very let down by the sequences compared to Uncharted 3. Like I said, though, I played them all back to back and Uncharted 3 for me was EASILY the best of the three games. All three have enemies that are a bit bullet spongey but Uncharted 3 finally found the right environments to where its not as annoying because it's just so fun running around the encounter maps; I think of the three this is the only one that'll come even close to what Uncharted 4 is going for in terms of options during a fight.

It's also the only game of the trilogy to have a truly memorable villain, and honestly I'm surprised she wasn't brought up more often as one of the best video game villains of the last generation. Again, I think that speaks to the general fatigue the gaming public seemed to have with the series. But if you play them all in sequence, I think you'd similarly be relieved to see Uncharted do away with its One More Thing trick the first two close out with and create play areas that feel a lot less like monster closets than the first two games.

As for the question of playing all three, or skipping 1? It's hard to say. If you're there for the gameplay then it's a no brainer, skip 1. But if you're there for the characters, the games are all connected in various ways and although none of them are super related to each other it's not exactly James Bond either. The series does take plenty of inspiration from Indiana Jones, though, so if you've seen all three of those movies and are of the opinion it didn't really matter what order you saw them in, you could likely just mix and match Uncharted however you'd like as well.

one of the pictures in Drake's house had some stand-in imagery from Assassin's Creed Black Flag that they forgot to take out of the final version.

Naughty Dog had to issue an apology to Ubisoft and shit. the new link has the finalized art.

how many of your re-played the redone Uncharted that came out some months ago? I don't want to Debbie Downer this post too much with my opinions, so I'll bite me tongue, but I'm curious if folks here liked playing those games again.

And I played them all back-to-back just a couple summers ago so my memory on them is more fresh than most, I'd think.

Uncharted 1 is a supremely average game. The graphics don't hold up well in the transition to true high definition, the villain is pretty anonymous, the final chapters of the game are terribly cheap and the characters are just sketches of what they become.

Uncharted 2 is a huge step up, and to where I am now (about to board the train!) still a really enjoyable thrill ride. Knowing what to do in certain fights, like the helicopter boss, has made for a breezier second run. It's still annoying that enemies are such bullet sponges (and that it feels more like dart fights than bullet fights) but I've been enjoying the combat. Like my first time through, I anticipate switching to Easy for the final chapters which, my first time through, nearly ruined a really good time the same way they totally did for the first Uncharted.

I don't think I'll get through Uncharted 3 in time, but my first time through the series I enjoyed that one the most. Unlike a lot of people, I thought they really rounded out the series well there. The villain was actually villainous and had some great monologues, the storytelling in general was just tighter and more fully functional. It still had its moments where people just pop-in conveniently (this was and is my biggest issue with Chloe in Uncharted 2) but in general it was the most polished Uncharted got with the storytelling. It was also the first time I found a combat scenario I just flat out enjoyed, the boot graveyard right before you get on the shipping container proper. In fact, unlike the other two games, after beating Uncharted 3 I immediately restarted it to play on Hard rather than kick it down to Easy just to see the ending and never come back.

There's a lot to complain about with these first two games, but overall the spectacle of it all still shines through, I think, and I do still find the set pieces enjoyable and stunning since few studios have attempted to match them. You can only experience a gunfight in a collapsing hotel once, but that doesn't make it any less impressive the second time around.

It's best to go into the game completely ignorant since knowing what'll happen will ruin roughly 60%-70% of the enjoyment of the experience of playing the game for the first time. I'm jealous you'll get to play Uncharted 2 for the first time on 2016 with fresh eyes.

All my thoughts in the above two posts stand. Amazing thrill ride but it's totally not worth playing on anything other than Easy. Every point of challenge in that game is due to cheap A.I. advantages, primarily armor. The worst is still that final chapter, but the most egregious is the mid-game boss wearing nothing but a helmet and a combat vest who can take 15 shotgun blasts to the skull and three grenade explosions.

Easy isn't always a cake walk, either. There are still a few fights that are easy to eat shit during. I can't begin to fathom how people beat this game on Hard, let alone the Brutal or Crushing difficulties. I can at least IMAGINE myself being competent in Metal Gear Solid's most hardcore modes. I just don't see it with this series.

Also, holy SHIT is the design of the final boss fight ruthless. It's not even a complicated fight when you know what you're supposed to do, but it's got enough bottomless pits and edges Drake's desperate to cling to that most of the stress in that fight comes from battling controls. Never a good look.

After ultimately getting through UC2 in a day and change when I thought it'd take several days, I'm a little more hopeful I can plow through Uncharted 3 late nights as well and fire UC4 up right away late, late Monday.

I beat the first one so didn't bother replaying so I ran through 2 and 3 and they were both glorious. It's interesting to me, as not a huge PS/Naughty Dog Stan that people didn't fuck with 3. The story was great, gameplay tight, and a beautifully realized world. It's was running through 2 and 3 that made me pre-order 4.

and I mean that in a good way. The firefights make sense when they happen and, even better, it makes sense how you can avoid them or play with them in interesting ways. The stealth system works really well and I've definitely caught myself with the same itch MGSV provided of intentionally dying to retry an encounter if I didn't sneak my way through the whole thing.

That said, the guns sound and feel EXCELLENT. while it's not quite as smart as GTA V's targeting system I do appreciate the lock-on mechanic (this is an option that's off by default). This game is already proving to be super fun so I'll likely play through it again on Hard with the lock-on turned off but for a first time through and primarily being invested in the narrative it's a nice thing to have.

I will say the targeting system is a little odd since you have to be aiming before you can mark people, but most of the encounters are typical Uncharted so it looks weird constantly popping your head out to mark someone while a guy is standing right ahead of you so his suspicion meter doesn't fill all the way.

also, yea, GORGEOUS game. just got the second main map and took a photo I'd love to make my PS4 wallpaper for a while were that an option.

I'm on chapter 10 and feel like I'm still mostly on set-up, and while there hasn't been anything close to the spectacle this series is known for yet the big moments that have occurred have been really fucking cool to look at and, because the gunplay is so fun this time around, a real joy to mess with. chapter 10 is when the environments really start to open up and I'm really excite to stealth and rope my way around the encounters.

if anything I'm actually a little disappointed there haven't been MORE fights which might be a first for an Uncharted game, haha. trophies seem to indicate there's plenty of that to come, though. one gripe I do have with the combat is they changed hand-to-hand from uncharted 3 a little, you can't grab guys and throw them into stuff anymore and the counter system has been hard to figure out. granted I think most of the hand-to-hand combat so far has been fairly scripted but it's less intuitive than 3. the buddy takedowns with your brother are cool though, in one fight we had three guys lined up in front of us that'd been worn down enough we did a triple shin-kick face-punch one by one. it looked goofy but was awesome in the moment.

holding X is Assassin's Creed, you press X a bunch in Uncharted to climb. try pressing X and you'll get past the intro.

I agree that the climbing is a bit convoluted but I've always been willing to suspend that if the animation is good and the things you're getting around are clever. I love Prince of Persia Sands of Time for the same reason.

plus the shooting in this is a lot of fun, especially when you're swinging around like Tarzan. the shooting was EASILY average at best in previous games. enemies actually react to your bullets now, for starters. imagine that!

great nostalgic nod between Elena and Nate at one point, too. Naughty Dog has got real, real good at character moments in video games.

and copped the PS4 coupled with the remaster Uncharted collection and got Uncharted 4 as well. My initial negative response to this thread was based on not enjoying playthroughs on twitch when the PS4 remaster dropped. Playing the game firsthand is a completely different experience; mainly because of the high definition retouch. Definitely much more engaging playing the game again so far. I near the last boss battle on Uncharted 2 and I'm debating if I want to play Uncharted 3 before playing 4; I really remember hating the last portions of the game and I'm not sure of the HD remastering will make the experience better.

I figure it'll be worth it to fire up Uncharted 3 since I truly don't remember much of the story line for the game at all. Having more insight into Drake's past will probably make playing Uncharted 4 that much more enjoyable rather than just firing up the game with no insight into the backstory.

Playing some portions of Uncharted 2 felt like a completely new experience because it's been so long. I completely forgot the British sounding woman was involved in the story line.

I haven't played the remasters, but apparently 3's combat is greatly improved over the original release, making the end of the game actually fun instead of practically intolerable. All the hallucination stuff probably still sucks though.

The hallucination portion is where I dreaded playing the game. That and the fact there was no last boss to fight from what I remember is why I despise Uncharted 3. I'll check out the improved combat you mentioned though when I fire up the game this weekend. Choking out henchmen from behind in Uncharted 2 feels so satisfying.

Outside of the outrageous price, that color scheme for that Uncharted 4 special edition PS4 upset me to no end when ever I saw photos of it online. I couldn't imagine how upset I'd be with that sitting in my living room.

I was fortunate enough to find a spot selling the Uncharted remaster edition online. I was stunned how hard it was finding PS4 online/offline. I appears they sold like hotcakes during the Black Friday/Holiday season.

When I initially played the series on PS3 I liked each game more than the one before it, but (granted I played them all on Easy just to breeze through it this time) 3 really showed its rough edges this time around.

I still think Marlowe rivals Rafe for best villain in the series but they ride that mind control stuff into the ground and it really is a plot of convenience even more than the fist two. The encounters also weren't as fun as I remember them (I loved the ship graveyard contrary to most my first time through and couldn't tolerate it this time around).

I was almost to the yacht when Uncharted 4 dropped and after finishing Uncharted 4, I've just decided to delete the remastered collection instead of finish 3.

I also grew to appreciate Uncharted 2 more, I'd have still turned the difficulty down to Easy for the final chapters like I did the first time through (I really don't understand why popular opinion is these games are easy, especially the final chapters of the first two games) but everything except a couple (but not all) blue man encounters and of course the final boss is still a really, really good time.

Going from the remastered Uncharteds to Uncharted 4 is something I'm still getting accustomed to graphically. The AI for the brother is impressive to me as well, coming from how Naughty Dog screwed up the companion AI for Last Of Us.

I just started yesterday, so I'm not too far into the game, but I have to admit my palms were sweating while doing some of the cliff jumps early on into the game.

Do all PS4 games look as good as this game? This is my first PS4 next gen game; well Street Fighter V is my first technically I suppose, but I didn't get too deep into that game yet.

Naw, Naughty Dog is a cut above the rest in terms of really working a Sony console to its greatest potential. Metal Gear 5 is close, and stuff like Bloodborne isn't anything to scoff at, but Uncharted manages to look bonkers and be butter smooth.

That's unfortunate to read. My entry to the PS4 is a top tier game and everything else will be sub-par and disappointing in comparison. Guess I'll have to toy around and get humbled with the online play in Street Fighter V until the sequels for Red Dead Redemption and Last Of Us drop.

I can't imagine how gorgeous that new Red Dead will look on the PS4.

I mean, few (if any) big name titles are going to have poor fidelity. For the most part it's a matter of art direction — and if a game has shitty art direction, doesn't matter what you play it on, it'll still look like shit. A game like MGSV looks dope as fuck on either console, but it's comparatively worse than Uncharted mostly because it's open world and thus has to spread its resources thin.

The demo got pulled down already, but Team Ninja (Ninja Gaiden creators) has a PS4 exclusive probably dropping in the fall called Nioh that looks great and even has player-selectable graphical options (a la PC) for whether you want it to run 60 FPS or devote the system to improved textures/particle effects. Stuff like that will hopefully become the norm.

But if you already played it it's not a must play obviously. Still that shit is unreal-visceral at times in the first person mode. I still boot it up just to wander around some times.

I expected a more somber ending (I was thinking Sully or Sam would die at few times while playing) but I wasn't disappointed in the slightest. The performances/storytelling really are a cut above most everything else out there..

There aren't any other AAA studios doing what Naughty Dog does with videogame storytelling. Ain't none even close. There are smaller studios that tell great stories with games, but nobody is doing it on the scale Naughty Dog does. Only Rockstar has the potential, but they haven't done nothing to match The Last of Us and this game yet.

Cool not having that supernatural element in the game. Second one was a bitch to beat.

It's still kind of easy to die compared to other games of this type but they showed much better restraint in the enemy types. No overdosing on assault shotgunners, laser sights or heavily armored goons. The dudes with chain guns were pretty brutal at the end of the game but they gave you enough space to play in that they weren't nearly as rough as the same enemies at the end of Uncharted 2.

Somewhat disappointed Nadine wasn't dealt with at the end since it would have been satisfying to get a comeuppance from the prior L's she delivered in the game. That's about the only solid complaint I have. The stealth was so sublimely done.

Truly looking forward to how this game will help build towards the sequel for The Last Of Us.

Now that I beat this, I'll have to humble myself with SFV now.

In response to Reply # 0

My wife already bought me 4 but I still haven't played 3. I finished 1 and 2 when they were first released so I'm thinking of replaying those and then playing 3 before I start 4. I got the remastered PS4 version so I'll be booting that up shortly. Looking forward to this new one though. The videos I've seen look amazing.

Hard to pass up at $40, but I'm guessing it's $40 because it's a fairly short game. Real curious if there anything new added to this game in terms of mechanics or its mainly just more hours of the same Uncharted 4.

and my faith was rewarded, since I'll be saving $10 on Lost Legacy.

It's supposed to be a 8-10 hour game, but the levels are said to be larger and more densely packed with side content. As far as new mechanics go, we know nothing except for the lock-picking that was shown off.

as a follow up to my late as hell "I finally got a PS4" post i also just finished Uncharted 4. like all the previous games i really enjoyed this adventure. simple gameplay, a fun story, beautiful set pieces and really just an enjoyable playthrough. as a person that just doesn't get down with many multiplayer games anymore this game is exactly what i want from this medium.

glad i checked back into this thread because i didn't realize there was an expansion pack (Lost Legacy).
