1. "Why not get the Core i7 4770k for another $80 dollars?"
In response to Reply # 0

Microcenter has a bundle with the ASRock motherboard for $399.

I'm actually putting one together next week to replace a 4 year old Dell 435t.

I'm leaning this way:
Intel Core i7 4770K 3.5GHz Socket LGA 1150 Boxed - $279.00
ASRock Z87 Extreme4 Socket LGA 1150 Z87 ATX Intel -$119.00
Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB DDR3-1600 PC3-12800) -$54.99
OCZ Technology ZT Series 550 Watt ATX Modular Powe - $74.99
Thermaltake V3 Black Edition ATX Mid Tower Computr - $34.99 ($19.99 after rebate
ASUS GTX660-DC2O-2GD5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 - $209 ($189 after rebate)
That runs about $830 right there.

I think a 128GB SSD is plenty big, so think another $99. More ram might be neccessary later, but it's easier to add.

I have a Bluray burner and about 5GB of disks I can use.

(I have the case in a PC in the back room and I like it, but I might go for a larger tower.)

When I copy/pasted it threw up micro center numbers instead of Amazon numbers. All the microcenter deals are in-store only apparently.

In response to Reply # 3

I put this together at Microcenter:

035436 SAMSUNG E 120GB SSD 840 2.5 SATA 3S - 79.99
583369 INTEL BOX INTEL CORE I7-4770K - 279.99
614818 ASROCK Z87 EXTREME6 ATX 1150 - 129.99
251900 IPSG LG 24X DVDRW SATA OEM - 15.99
211334 CRUCIAL 8GB 4X2 D3 1600 DIMM CL9 - 52.99
190306 CORSAIR 750W CXMOD 80+BRZ ATX PSU - 74.99
497818 THERMALTAKE V3 BLACK GAMING CHASSIS - 34.99
Subtotal » $668.93 Tax » $53.51 Total >> $722.44

Plus there are two rebates:
Rebates: Corsair PS : $10.00
Case: $15.00

Then I added a GTX 660 from Newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121660:
1 x ($209.99) ASUS GTX660-DC2O-2GD5 GeForce GTX 660 2GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card $209.99
1 x ($49.99) NVIDIA Coupon Metro: Last Light $49.99
1 x ($-21.00) DISCOUNT FOR PROMOTION CODE$-21.00
1 x ($-49.99) DISCOUNT FOR AUTOADD #85654$-49.99
Subtotal: $188.99
Tax: $14.17
Shipping and Handling: $0.00
Total Amount: $203.16

There's a $20 rebate on the video card.

I used an existing mouse and keyboard and added a 500GB drive I had laying around. (And using a old copy of Windows 7 I have.)

So at the end I'll have spent $925.60 out of pocket and I'll be getting back $45 in rebates (assuming I fill everything out perfectly and they don't lose it, or mess with me in some way.)

Or go with a Dell. The Dell's not a bad deal actually considering the case looks nice, and you get a year of support.

2. "have you thought about AMD?"
In response to Reply # 0

all my PCs have been AMD for the last 10-12 years and i have nothing bad to say. comparable cpus are cheaper than the intels. just a thought. might save you a little bit of money, but i see that you are below your budget anyway.

Serious question. I'm an AMD head, but deal just in audio processing/editing, and they've always been tops for me in that capacity. Less so for video?

In response to Reply # 0

maybe you should look at the "professional graphics cards" on newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Professional-Graphics-Cards/SubCategory/ID-449. apparently there is some difference. i know "professional" graphics cards aren't ideal for gaming and i think the converse holds true as well

that psu seems like it's a bit underpowered. i would go for 450W minimum

everything else looks like it's ok. generally speaking you want to spend the most money on the most important parts of your build: gfx card, processor, and mobo. spend as much as you can on those and skimp on everything else. the case doesn't really matter too much. i have a $30 case (on sale + rebate) that is whisper quiet. ram is dirt cheap; you can probably skate by with 8GB now and pick up the other 8 later (unless it's crucial for editing )

Don't skimp on the power supply, and make sure it's modular. You'll appreciate this in the long run when you don't have to deal with cables being a mess. The modular Corsair and Seasonic units tend to be the most reputable.

I'd get a Z87 since you'll be able to overclock if you need to, and they just have more features in general.

I'd also go with a Samsung 840 Pro (or if you can still find an 830) instead of the regular Samsung 840.

bearfield is right about the GPU. Gaming GPU quality doesn't necessarily translate over to graphical work (e.g., CAD).

In response to Reply # 10

The new Haswell Pro cpu's have a very decent Intergrated Graphics chip built into it that will allow you to play a ton of games at medium settings. Stuff like Crysis and Metro would have to be low or may not play at all but you have the option of adding the card later
Will knock a chunk of change off the price.

I see that the price jumped up quite a bit. Since that 670 is $360 + $10 shipping, why not just go for one of the new 770s that just came out that are like $400? They perform even better than the high end 680s that came out last generation.

I was going to ask why you weren't going AMD for your GPU, but I remembered that there are driver issues for stuff like Photoshop.

Iitterally
New to the area and didn't know what it was
I'm from cali and always head to fry's

If you wanna get some instore deals let me know.

I'm leanin toward a similar route as you with that i7 4770k, 16gb ram and 128gb samsung 840 ssd.
The ssd can be had on amazon right now for $89 direct from amazon.

My machine will be used to do stats analysis on 0.1-0.7TB datasets
And wifey does graphic design and she needs a new machine too and I didn't want to have to buy two boxes.
I need more cpu power than her and she needs better graphics than me.

Also, I need to meet clients in their office and do stuff on the fly sometimes so I'm thinking about setting up my own personal rdc/vpn so I can access my data and run analysis remotely.
Anyone done this on a household not corporate level?
How difficult is this to setup amd keep secure?

I used to just run with my laptop amd either a usb hdd drive or small analytic datasets on thumbdrive.

I run sas which don't do so well in bootcamp so macs ain't in the picture.

You can get the SSD at Microcenter for $79.99 out the door when you buy it with a 4th gen processor.

I built my machine last week with parts from up there.

yeah i saw that.
so, they have a MSi + 4770k bundle for like 339 and then 99 for the ssd then $20 discount so that's $419

orrrr, dell.com has an XPS system with 4770k for $749

http://www.dell.com/us/p/xps-8700/pd?oc=fdcwgt19b&model_id=xps-8700

and I can just add 128GB ssd for $89 from amazon and be cookin for bout $850
but I want 16GB DDR3-1600 ram to go with it tho
i'm kinda torn on that GTX 660 card.
seems over kill.
maybe get her a lil $100 GPU and be done with it.

I think your video card does not match what you are doing with the machine. If you aren't going to get a professional video card, there is no need to drop $400 on a gaming card since it won't help with your graphics stuff much.

Otherwise, I think you're good. An i7 will be nice since you are doing CPU-heavy work.

Think of it like cars,
a tractor trailer needs huge amounts of power to drag all that stuff around, but the power is delivered down low.

a F1 race car needs similar amounts of power but it is "up high".

same power, different specified uses.

This is what I found specifically on GPU:

Those barely use a video card at all. Mostly CPU. 3DS and Maya (as well as CAD and other 3D stuff which is what I work in) have vastly different GPU requirements. I believe the numbers in the article I posted are relevant to this.

I think that is more like what you would need. My line of thought overall is -- do you want a 3D workstation that can do some gaming, or a gaming rig that can do a little bit of 3D work?

Did you look at the benchmark table? The numbers are pretty staggering in favor of the Quadro. And you can look up youtube vids of Quadro cards running 3D games, they do ok.

I can't speak on individual Quadro cards, honestly, but I will bet that a $400 Quadro will do worlds better 3D work than a $400 gaming card. I use a Quadro 5000 here at work and it works well, but I don't have anything else to compare to.

Please don't make a purchase based on my thoughts, though...just use this discussion to do some research and find out what you need.

i didnt really realize video editing had such trace bearing on video card performance
its not like i'm gonna be playing Crysis anyway

i'd opt for the 600, but i want longevity. i'd outgrow the 600 faster than the 2000

I think a Quadro would still help something like video editing in Premiere, but the Maya/3DS stuff is where you get the big benefit.

Please let us know what your research reveals. I'm curious.

I've got the Gunmetal one. Love the look, and it does stay relatively quiet. And it looks badass in white, so there's that. For the fans you can move the rear case fan to the front panel, so you have 2 140mm fans as intake, and have either a 120mm or 140mm in the rear for exhaust. Remove the middle drive cage and airflow will be fine inside. If the video card starts getting warmer than you like, just ass a fan in the bottom of the case (or the side, if you're not getting the windowed R4)

I do like the latest list on your PCPartsPicker though. The Hyper212 is a great bang for the buck cooler, and I'm glad to see the PSU was upgraded as well (Rosewill is the NewEgg house brand. Some things I'd rather pay a little more for a name brand. The PSU is one such things). Your HDD and memory will likely change depending on what's on sale at the time you buy. Honestly, you can probably get at least a 2TB drive for close to or a bit more than that Blue Cavi.

Fuck it my advice is as good as anybody elses even tho it's late.

Graphics/2d/3d/etc: Don't bother with a gaming card.

If you want to do a bit of gaming, some of the Firepros are okay and then it'll still handle really good content creation stuff.

i'm out.

I used to run one with no issues, but I switched over to Windows last year. I was too limited software-wise on OSX, and vital software for me like Office and work software (e.g., SPSS, Stata, SAS) all run better on Windows.

If I ever wanted to run OSX on a non-laptop machine, I'd always build one. Desktop/workstation Mac? Never again.

Haven't decided on the 2GB vs 3GB as I'm a gamer lite but still want some horsepower under the hood.

My GTX 285 seems to be pretty completely crapping out in 3D applications though. Someone gave it to me a while back so I'm not that salty, but I only got to run it for a while. Oh well.

It's usually not worth the extra cost to go from 1GB to 2 or 2 to 3. Not sure how it affects 3D design programs, though.

The performance of the GTX 285 has been everything I could ask for up until it's started crashing the driver so often as to be useless, and it's a 1GB card with architecture that's hardly new by this point.

Before I pull the trigger, though, I'm going to test things on my old 9600 to make 100% sure the driver crashes *are* the hardware and not a software bug. But assuming so, I'm pretty sure I'll stick with the 2GB variety since I'm just a dabbler in other uses for the card.

The wife will use for this box as well for graphic design (no 3D stuff tho) using Photoshop.

i could get by with a green monochrome screen and my wife doesn't do Pixar/Dreamworks level graphic design so we dont *need* a GPU.

salesman said these 4770k chips run REALLY hot so the box i got has two fans already but space for an additional 3 fans and i plan on having this thing run as cool as possible.
caveat being i had an workstation in my office that sounded like a 747 being fired up when i turned it on.
and it also blew hot ass air around the room like jet engine exhaust.

And it's apparently possible that my Inland 600W PSU runs at an efficiency rate comparable to a higher-quality 400W one.

So if this build is stable, sweet. But if it's not for some reason, the PSU is probably where you'll want to start for troubleshooting.

You can get a 1000w PSU that costs the same as a good 500w PSUna dit will probably go bad much quicker (assuming it's even making the clamed 1000w in the first place.

CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($199.99 @ Microcenter)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87X-OC ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($195.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Storage: Sandisk Extreme 240GB 2.5" Solid State Disk (Purchased For $0.00)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($67.99 @ Microcenter)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 4GB Video Card ($444.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 (Titanium Grey) ATX Mid Tower Case (Purchased For $65.00)
Other: Corsair CX Series CX600M 600W ($64.99)
Other: Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB DDR3 - 1600 ($69.99)
Total: $1108.93

Reused the SSD I had in my laptop and a 24" 1080p monitor--everything else is new. A 4GB 770 is overkill for a single 1080p monitor, but I paid the premium for future-proofing. The new consoles are packing as much as 8GB of GPU memory, and I expect the ports that eventually come over should benefit.

The build was a little nerve-wracking, being a TOTAL noob, but I got through it with barely any mistakes. The HDD actually isn't registering, and I need to figure out why, but right now I'm too damn happy with the rig to bust it open again.

Coming from 4 years of laptop gaming, this thing is amazing. Getting that first dialog box about Skyrim auto-detecting graphics quality and then seeing the word "Ultra"....damn near brought a tear to my eye.

Anyway, I'm about to turn off my cell phone and lock myself up with some Bioshock: Infinite this weekend. I've avoided every single Infinite post on the internet until I got this rig built, and I'm glad I made the effort. I played the first 30 minutes last night and was blown away by the spectacle of it.

so here's a question

i'm getting an ssd for the os, adobe, and steam
would you get a 1-2tb hdd for rendering and files
or a 500gb dedicated for rendering and an external for files?

Do you need those files on the non-SSD to be portable at all?

If not, go with a single internal HDD since the SATA connection will be much faster than USB 2 or 3.

The rendering won't adversely affect the life of the HDD, and frankly, you'd want to set up a backup for your files regardless of which drive they're on. Plus, the rendering will take up your CPU, so doing operations on a separate drive would still be inconvenient (unless you expect to be doing things with it on another machine a lot).

or something like that.

On the PCPartPicker page it says you're buying Windows? And is that the price you're paying? You could probably save a few dollars and get an upgrade version of 8.1 and just do the double install trick. You do an initial installation that can't have the product key authenticated, and then you just do a fresh/clean install over that installation, and the subsequent installation should be able to be authenticated. Not sure if it's worth the trouble for you, but that's what I've done before.

EDIT: So I just found out they don't sell Windows 8.1 upgrade versions. I guess that means if you wanted to do the double-install route, you'd have to do with a version of 8.0 and then do the free upgrade to 8.1 afterwards.

I find building computers really fun, and I don't do it frequently enough that I ever get tired of doing it.

Now that you've done it once, you'll probably never want to get a pre-built ever again.

This can be amazing too

when you integrate it with your cable so you don't need a cable box anymore and you can have mass amounts of movies and music on tap from one device. It's wonderful.

I've done some crazy things with windows media player and also don't forget plex.

Congrats on building a PC, its a great feeling. You're about to take gaming to another level.

The case really is a gamer's chassis though lol...looks kinda like a Cylon's head, and I mean that in an appreciative fashion. I went for a near-silent chassis for my current build (makes sense in a music studio), but have always dug what sorts of gamer designs have been on the front end of the curve.

this was the least techy one i could find that wasn't too small for the $70 range

all the other cases looked like appliances or just had a relentlessly nerd, drop shadow using aesthetic.

i went purple cause blue, red, and green just seemed to common
but i had to go cathode rather than LED which is fine. i don't really use em unless i don't feel like turning a lamp on or i just want some mood lighting at my desk

But mine has decent driver integration, so for most tasks I get an onscreen that alerts me to caps lock and all that.

It was a $4 keyboard at the thrift store and $80 new, wireless, media/hotkeys-heavy, so I'm working with it. But I dream of a dope mechanical keyboard that reminds me of playing the piano or something.

it's not that bad, just bugs the shit outta me.

kind of like buying a nice mattress or quality cookware

it depends on how much typing and keyboard-based gaming you'll be doing though. if you don't do much of either then stick with the cheap keyboards. i replaced my 5-year old dynex keyboard with a steelseries mechanical keyboard and i think it was worth every penny. i'd rather pay $100 for a good piece of equipment that will last me 10 years than $30 for a low quality one that is only good for 3-5 years

Doesn't even need crazy lights or macro keys either (like I said, I like my Das more than the Razer). Just the tactile feel of the keys when you hit them is all you need to sell you. It is a big price hike from your standard keyboard, for sure, but it's an investment you will not regret

If you're planning on doing any mildly engaging gaming a discrete GPU, even an inexpensive one, is going to be better off than onboard graphics. Both Intel and AMD are making strides (and if you're dead set on going onboard, from a GPU standpoint AMD will do you a bit better in that aspect), but spending as little at $150 (and maybe less than that) on a dedicated GPU would still be a better bet

I thought about it, a lot of the games I want are also available on Steam.

NBA 2K16
Mighty No. 9 (February 2016)
Overwatch (Spring 2016)

But to hear that you built a gaming rig and also do video editing is encouraging. I may duplicate your exact specs. I need to be able to run Adobe CC.

A lot of that stuff is out dated by today's standards meaning you can get more advanced options for the same price of what he paid for older equipment back then.

half of what i meant was i prefer performance to graphics so i'm not afraid to play on just 'high', the other half was that games i tend to like are never really that demanding. I could probably play Mini Metro and Papa & Yo on a $50 card.

but like i said, you can do waaay better. i got the Sapphire just to get me by. its not like you need more than a 2gb card (neither does CC).

If you go AMD, get the best octocore FX chip you can afford.

also think about a mobo with on-board graphics. hopefully you'll never use it, but its a good fail-safe if a windows update screws up your card driver.

also get an aftermarket cooler. i didn't realize what 'loud' meant

For your GPU i'd go with Nvidia.

I used to be all over AMD and now I would never go back AMD again. You'll want a 3gb and up card if you can. If he's trying to run things on ultra he better hope the game is well optimized if not you're going to have to spend to achieve that.

If we get a price range that'll help also.

I've been wanting either an XboxOne or a PS4.
I also need a new computer since my Mac Pro just barely misses the requirements
needed for Adobe CC.

I figured, why not get both in a gaming PC?

But yeah, any feedback/suggestions you can offer would be appreciated.
I've watched a few Youtube videos the past week so I _think_ I could install it on my own.
The only part that has me worried is installing Windows 10 and making sure the drivers are all correct.

comes in around $1020 (you're not gonna send them rebates in)

installing Windows is pretty simple
just make a bootable USB of Windows 10 on another computer and have your key ready

have only the SSD plugged in when you first boot and you're in the bios setting up your drive. when you restart have your bootable usb in and it should start your installation

after its all done, you can turn off the machine, plug in your HDD, turn it on, check and make sure it shows up in the BIOS, enable it in windows and you're good.

but how bright it shines depends on what you put around it. there's not point if your mobo isnt good, you dont have enough ram, or the write speed to your HDD isn't that great.

AMD has a comparable chip for just about every Intel one. there are definite trade offs for the price, but if you're not editing video or doing rocket science, its a pretty negligible difference, but if you're gaming, you'll see the difference.

There's not very many art pc tutorials out. if you're building a gaming rig, theoretically it should run CC, but it gets confusing when you run into gaming rig tutorials or try and figure out Mac specs. Gaming PCs generally build around the video card. CC however uses CPU power. Adobe does use GPU to render some things in Ai, Ps, and AE like 3d, and some tools like 'rotate canvas', but any 2gb or higher GPU will work. So for this purpose, you should build around the CPU. the higher end Macs use i5 and i7 chips, but the team around them is either propietary or speced down. For an art/gaming rig, if you wanna be cost effective/bottleneck conscious, go for an i5 or equivalent/higher AMD. Also just having CC installed on your boot SDD will make it run blindingly faster, but saving and rendering is gonna be bottlenecked by your HDD(if thats where you save things).

this is a good guide. its what i used initially to understand what i was looking at.

With a $1500 budget, you can definitely build a rig to last you for quite some time. I love this kind of thing...

Oh, and if you have a microcenter in your area, it would be a godsend. If not, NewEgg, Tiger Direct, Amazon (and Microcenter online) will do you good.

WIth the latest Skylake chips hitting the market, Haswell will start fading out and leaves no upgrade potential. On the flip side, you can likely find a pretty stout Haswell chip for a great price (which will drop as Skylake becomes more readily available). If you don't NEED the latest and fastest, that may be a decent choice.

My build is now 2 years old, and my i5 3570K doesn't feel sluggish in the slightest. There's not much I would upgrade at the moment (with the possible exception of my GPU, but even that isn't a necessity)

the only gripe is that i shoulda got the cooler as reccomended. noise is pretty high

that and sometimes my SSD gets a little freezy for a couple hours after a power outage (which doesnt happen often) even with a powerstrip.

I kept it pretty close to the original build specs the post started with, just with the latest platform. Biggest gains seem to come with the SSD and the memory, which prices have dropped a good deal for more capacity (16gb of memory is going for what 8gb went for a few months ago). Cases are subjective as much as anything, so I stuck with the Fractal case. While I used a Nvidia GPU for this build, an AMD R9 380X can be had for the same price if you wanted to go with Team Red.

My laptop is still moving around alright (12GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Core i5 from 2013) but if my finances allow for it, I'd like to get a solid desktop to do front-end web development / UI design / motion graphics and the occasional FPS game.

I had some time while visiting my dad and created a couple of shopping carts with components for a desktop. My budget is ~$1K +/- $300.

Here are screengrabs of those shopping carts.

What do you think?

Was looking at that $800 one at microcenter and was going to add the 2070 graphics card my son wanted but then saw that one at best buy with it and the 1TB drive and 480 ssd. My wife was like shoot, just get him that one instead. Had $100 in rewards I had been stacking so only came out paying like $1220 after tax.

I went the AMD route. Got the ryzen 3600x for only $194, went with a GTX 1060 super since I don't game, except occasionally in 1080p, 32gb RAM, MSI x570 board, 2 m.2 nvme 1 TB drives, plus reused storage drives from old PC, didn't need to but bought a new fractal case.

Think I ended about $800 and this thing has been super fast and stable.

Gonna throw in another GPU in about two months and run this thing SLI. Super pleased with how it turned out, already overclocked the CPU to 5 GHz and could go up more if I wanted.
