"Google I/O 2012 preview"

No swipe because it's too long. The writer has an annoying writing style, but there are some interesting tidbits though, covering Jellybean, Majel/Google Assistant, Project Glass, Nexus tablets, and some other things.

Last year they came back with the iPad-KILLER the Galaxy Tab.

And at least one person's kid is still using it for games.

(And one person still has the previous year's Logitech TV.)

Wonder what they get this year? Googles?

I'm not sure why we send people to Google I/O to tell you the truth.

We have a Google appliance, and use Google Analytics, but we don't have an Android app (yet, probably going with SourceBits), we don't have a Chrome app, and we code for IE8 compatibility.

I think they send them for the swag - and because we have a budget.

8. "Alleged leak of the Nexus Tablet (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2012/06/this-is-googles-new-nexus-tablet-the-nexus-7/

Wondering what Google’s flagship I/O Conference announcement this week should look like? Wonder no longer. It’s a 7-inch Tegra 3 tablet running Android Jelly Bean, and it’s set to hit Australia from July.

Today Gizmodo Australia has viewed a training document detailing exactly what’s going to be in the new tablet and how much it’s going to cost.

As rumoured, Google’s going to announce a 7-inch, Nexus-branded tablet called the Nexus 7. According to the leak, it’s built by Asus, with a 1.3Ghz quad-core Tegra 3 processor, GeForce 12-core GPU and 1GB of RAM with two different storage variants: 8GB and 16GB.

The Nexus tablet will also feature NFC and run Google Wallet (probably only in the US) and Android Beam.

The screen is an IPS display with a 178-degree viewing angle, running a resolution of 1280 by 800. The device will also sport a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera. The battery will also give you 9 hours worth of operation.

The 8GB model will set you back $US199 and the 16GB will cost $US249. No word in the document on local prices.

The leaked document also says that the device will be the first to run Jelly Bean, the new version of Android. Details are scarce on Jelly Bean, but the slides tell us that Google will handle operating system updates from now on, which could address the fragmentation problem. We aren’t sure if this statement means that Google will handle all handset updates from Jelly Bean onwards, or if it just means it will handle it for the Nexus 7 going forward. Based on the various arrangements with other manufacturers and telcos around the world, it’s likely to be the latter. We’ll know more come Google I/O.

Update: The document says that the Nexus 7 will run Android Jelly Bean, but makes no mention of the version number. We understand that the device will be version stamped with Android 4.1, rather than leaping ahead a generation and stamping it as 5.0. Wired had suggested after spotting a leaked benchmark that this would be the case.

Rumours about Google working on a Nexus-branded tablet with Asus have been swirling for a while. Even as far back as May, a report emerged of a super cheap Tegra 3-powered device was coming at the Google I/O developer event, which is now only days away.

The first clue was when Asus demonstrated the awesome cheap and wonderfully cheerful Eee Pad MeMO 370T at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, before delaying the unit indefinitely.

Since then, rumours about a home-grown tablet from Google have been few and far between, but this is the first time we’ve seen anything official regarding specs.

Apple has already played its announcement cards around iOS 6, Microsoft has announced Surface and Windows Phone 8, and Google risks being left behind without its own bespoke tablet product. June is one hell of a month to be following what’s new in tech.

Priced at sub-$US200, the Google’s Nexus 7 will become Amazon’s biggest problem post-launch, threatening the market share of the hugely successful Kindle Fire. The Fire runs a highly modified version of the Android operating system and prevents users from wandering outside the customised Amazon environment. The Nexus brand, however, has always been associated with the purest form of the Android operating system Google has to offer, meaning that it’s likely going to be a better experience. Google is also banking on the fact that the screen is better than the Fire’s, with a higher resolution and 10-point touch capability.

Of course, this could all prove to be an elaborate fake. We’ve seen them before and we’ll see them as long as there’s a rabid tech-loving public that will queue up around the block for value this good.

We’ll bring you the news as we hear it about this tablet, and if it really is the Nexus 7, I’m looking forward to this year’s Google I/O. Follow Gizmodo Australia on Twitter for further updates.

The price seems right. I'd probably pick one up as an impulse purchase - but the lack of cellular options make it less useful to me.

It's got Google maps on it - but no way to use it in the car without celluar - so it's less useful. (Maybe they'll add offline maps?)

this makes a lot of sense. No 3G/4G connection means no attachment to carriers... which means it's a purer Android experience (which is the purpose of the Nexus line).

And offline Maps is expected soon... it was featured in the Maps showcase a few weeks back.

Since they're smaller tablets, are they assuming people will use them outside the home more? My wife takes her iPad with her a lot of places.

If that's the case, then I'm thinking retail NFC adoption is going to gain a lot of momentum.

Since the Nexus will presumably be a more portable 7" tablet, then staying ahead of the curve with NFC makes a bit more sense in that context.

When you look outside of payments, there are other uses for the tech. It'd be a convenient way to pair devices for games, for example.

Wallet is all software so you probably get that for free with Google's version of Android anyway.

- Smoother animations, triple buffering, consistent frame rate
- Touch prediction
- Revised power conservation in CPU
- New tool called systrace: shows what the rendering engine is doing
- Auto-arranges and auto-resizes apps/widgets on home screens
- Better predictive keyboard
- Offline voice typing (!!!)
- External braille input
- Faster photo review in camera app; swipe pictures away, pinch for filmstrip view

- Quick responses in notifications for things like Gmail
- G+ photos show up in notifications; can +1 without going into app (same with Foursquare, and presumably other apps)

- Google Now - uses your search history, calendar and more to figure out what you might want, like rerouting your commute before you leave work
- Google Now updates you on your sports teams
- If you searched a flight before, it updates you on the status of the flight
- Looks at search patterns to make guesses on what you want

- Release starting mid-July; SDK available today for devs
- PDK allows port of Android to hardware to allow parallel development with Google for OEM's

In response to Reply # 24
Wed Jun-27-12 02:29 PM by wallysmith

While onstage, the voice recognition actually corrected itself when it misheard the speaker.

He said "Words appear even though I don't have a connection." The device briefly displayed "words appear even know..." but as it continued processing the whole sentence it realized that made no sense and corrected it to "even though".

Language interpretation integrated with voice transcription? And offline? Pretty fucking impressive, actually.

I really hope Verizon doesn't drop the ball with the 4.1 OTA update...

Edit: Here's video of the correction

I'm genuinely hoping this sparks a price war.

Race to the bottom.

Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Samsung (names I never thought would go together) are going to have to slash prices to stay competitive, because they can't really beat the specs (on software, anyway).

- New native tablet version
- Text and photos are more slick, like a mashup of Tumblr and G+
- Updates coming to ipad soon; also coming to Android phones
- Google+ Events: deep integration with Google Calendar with invites (doesn't require users to be on G+), features for before/during/after event
- Cinemagraphs: animated themes, integrated into Calendar, can see who else is attending
- Party Mode: once enabled, all new photos get streamed in realtime by users (at user's discretion to turn on, and are always notified that Party Mode is on)
- Slideshow during Party Mode switches to fullscreen view
- Google Events sends requests to attendees for video and photos, and reorganizes in chronological order (this is pretty sick)
- Photos that get the most engagement from guests get highlighted at top of page
- Party Mode available today on G+

Some of the things we hear of and think as the "next technology" are often great innovations that allow us an easier time of normal tasks. (Also known as marketing)

But this shit they just demoed is a total re-garison of the direction of innovation.

Its shit you only see in movies.

Apple just got beat at their own shit.

Google introduced:

A cheaper 7 inch tablet.

An Apple TV that allows for editing playlists that costs over $200 more

A siri clone

updates to google apps

Google glasses (which admittedly is an awesome product) that is overpriced and only for developers.

Now how much of this new tech is compatible with tablets and phones released as little as a year and a half ago.... I'll wait.

Someone break down the innovation on display today because I honestly don't see it.

But thats not the contention. Its the idea that these companies which are very similar in scope, can come up with two similar technical approaches. and still come out in two different directions.

I'd cop another google wearable product right today. Give me a G+ 666 stamp with wireless charging, wifi and an SSD.

Google glasses will hopefully cost consumers under $500.

Here's some innovation:

- Google Now is a gamechanger. Say you go to the gym every Wednesday, and you've searched for bus routes to the gym before. Google Now can read your schedule, detect traffic before your appointment and suggest alternate routes.

- "Siri clone"? Google was doing voice search long before Siri existed. Today's demo was a natural expansion of what's already in place, and integrates the advancements in Google search like the Knowledge Graph and Google Now

- Offline voice typing is sick... not sure how they do this

- Google+ Party Mode/Events is a fantastic social feature. Will it bring users over from Facebook? No idea, but allowing real time group photo sharing and post-event auto-organization of shared photos and videos is pretty impressive

- Glass isn't intended to be competitively priced; they firmly established it's for die-hard techies and that they're still using prototype models. With that said, the already-showcased applications are really impressive

What's Apple's latest "innovation"? Siri, which wasn't even theirs to begin with. They bought it out, pulled it from the Appstore, then touted it as their groundbreaking new feature.

Nevermind the fact that, per Steve Wozniak's own words, Apple actually made Siri *worse*:

they just refine existing shit to an ultra-useable form and cash in.

Google has a LOT of work to do to get to that ultra-useable stage.

If it allows complex functions to be handled by people not tech savvy at all (thus allowing it to hit the "unwashed masses") then that deserves major credit.

It's what got Windows off the ground.

In terms of actual software or hardware innovation though, then yeah, I'd generally agree that Apple isn't exactly a leader there.

Apple could release some shit tomorrow that could outdo this. I would call out Google for falling behind.

What I'm saying is that the utility of this technology is taking shape in ways none would have guessed a few years ago. Like I said above.

Thats one of the benefits of competition. to compare and contrast as a fan of all this stuff, not just one platform.

I'm still trying to figure out why the Nexus phone is 150 USD more than the base tablet.

But I will say this:

The Nexus 7 is a compelling 'third screen' option for those of us curious about Android, but uncomfortable committing to mobile phone contracts.

The Nexus Q is interesting but the price point is terrible. It needs to be between 100-200 to make it worth anyone's time: the living room is already crowded with Apple TVs, cable boxes, Xbox, Roku; etc. and most of those are either sandboxed experiences (Apple) and cheap or broader, richer experiences that make the price tag worthwhile (XBox).

That said, I think this is a great time to be a consumer and electronics enthusiast: Google is raising the bar on quality and lowering the bar on price, which is the exact shot in the arm this industry may need.

As far as Google Glass, let me say this: I think it's incredible, science fiction stuff. It's big thinking, innovative, and potentially game changing. But it's also something that's going to require patience from Google, as I don't think the public at large is ready for it yet. It's not to say it never will be, but beepers, cell phones, laptops (even desktops at one time) -- those things took time to go from niche devices to accepted mass consumption electronics and fashion items. This is still Major Dorkling™ technology that would earn even a self-respecting nerd a swirly at any place of public education. But in 5-7 years, it could be HUGE.

It'll immediately be lumped in as a Roku/Apple TV competitor, whether or not it's a fair comparison. And the main talking point will inevitably be how it's way overpriced for doing more or less the same thing as its closest competitors.

Don't get me wrong, I would love for this to succeed, but there's a decent chance it'll be dead in the water.

statement, which I think makes another point of differentiation between the two dominant ecosystems (iOS and Android) -- Tim Cook's blood pressure spiked when he heard that. But who's it for then? Early adopters? Android fanatics? HD enthusiasts? Google launched a very VERY mass consumery product today with the Nexus 7, and then a not so consumery product right next to it. At 300 dollars, it's almost a prohibitive price point, but I'll withhold judgment until I hear how it performs, though.

Does it connect to your phone, or does it have its own data signal to a company or wifi?

I think it would make more sense for it to be a unique type of display for your phone info. I'm thinking like just arrows and street names for directions, for instance, instead of actual maps.

Google to merge Hangouts, Talk & Messenger
By Janko Roettgers Jun. 27, 2012, 3:41pm PT 1 Comment

Google is working on unifying its various real-time messaging applications across all devices, and the result could be a unified messenger that allows you to do one-on-one chats as well as group video Hangouts. That’s the major news out of a session with the Google+ Hangouts team at Google I/O Wednesday afternoon.

Asked about why Google has multiple different services for video chat and messaging, including Google Talk, Google+ Messenger and Google+ Hangouts, Google Product Manager Nikhyl Singhal admitted: “We have done an incredibly poor job servicing our users here.” Singhal said that Google doesn’t have anything to announce at this point, but that the company is definitely working on unifying all of these experiences.

Singhal and his colleague Chee Chew, who has been credited with inventing Google+ Hangouts, also shared a few more details about how Google uses Hangouts internally. The company uses video conferencing for virtually all of its meetings, and Singhal said that this has been completely switched to Hangouts as a video conferencing solution. “We do over 10,000 hangouts every day at Google,” he said.

So which other features are coming to Hangouts? Chew and Singhal didn’t share too many specifics, but said that they’re striving to make any Hangouts feature available on every supported device. This includes allowing mobile phone users to start a Hangout on Air, which will essentially bring mobile social live streaming to Google+ and YouTube.

Nexus 7 designed and manufactured in four months, sold at cost
By Aaron Souppouris on June 28, 2012 04:41 am

Asus' Chairman Jonney Shih and Google's head of Android Andy Rubin have revealed that the Nexus 7 is being sold at cost, and was built in just four months. "Our engineers told me it is like torture," Shih tells All Things D. Asus was told that the Nexus tablet was to be ready in four months, must be high-end, and should not cost over $200. "They ask a lot."

Rubin says that only Asus could move that fast: "we went from zero to working product in four months." He admits to being frustrated at the lack of Android tablet sales in the past, but says Google now has a full ecosystem in place that will allow users to consume media on one of the company's tablets. "I think that was the missing piece."

It's clear to all that Google is pitching its tablet as a direct competitor to Amazon's Kindle Fire. However, unlike the Fire, the Nexus 7 has a quad-core Tegra 3 SoC and a 1280 x 800 laminated display — so how is Google selling it at the same price? "When it gets sold through the Play store," says Rubin, "there's no margin, it just basically gets (sold) through." All Things D elaborates that Google is also absorbing the marketing costs associated with the device. When asked if he thinks this cost structure will make life difficult for other Android manufacturers to sell tablets, Rubin insisted there is "plenty of room left for Android tablet innovation."

Credit Asus for doing their thing with little wiggle room, those boys (and gals) can cook.

I have a serious issue with whoever project/product manager who scoped this project out to take fourth months. You can't even get good software built in four months, let alone hardware.

I realize google has a free-wheeling culture, but four months? Is that was PMI is training folks to do now?

but I'm guessing the short production time was due to the fact that both parties were already well versed in their respective arenas (obviously Asus with the hardware and Google with the software).

After that it just became a matter of design and making decisions on the components... not to mention the fact that since there's no 3G/4G, they didn't have to involve any telecoms.

99. ""Going Google" - Drive/Chrome OS"
In response to Reply # 0

- Collaborative services
- Gov't agencies in 45 states, 5 million business and 66 of the top universities have "gone Google"
- Drive adds iOS and Chrome OS (demonstrated on iPad)
- Uses OCR to search and identify files; doesn't need labels, metadata, etc. (searches "pyramids" to pull up picture of pyramid despite generic filename)
- Realtime collaboration in Google Doc via Drive (demonstrated with smartphone, tablet and PC)
- Also works for editing offline; cached locally so they can update when connection is restored (even works if browser is closed)
- Not clear though if offline editing exists for tablets/phones

- Chrome OS: "always new computer"
- Emphasis on applications
- Will be sold in over 100 Best Buys

In response to Reply # 0

- Infrastructure extended to developers
- Linux VM at Google scale
- High performance networking between VM's for cluster formation
- Example with beta tester using in-house cluster with 1000 nodes took 10 minutes per association; GCE scalability brought that down to few secs per
- Service can scale even higher; running ticker shows increasing cores available for applications (up to 771,886 cores)
- Using same example as before with 600k cores has several associations per second
- "Computing Without Limits"

- 310 million active users
- 60 billion words typed into Chrome daily; equal to 1TB
- Most popular browser in the world? (this can't be right)
- Chrome Sync demonstration where all his Chrome settings on his personal Macbook are loaded on logging into his work Chromebook, then loads same tab onto Chrome on Galaxy Nexus (using back button on Nexus allows him to move backwards through same search results used on his computer)
- Chrome for iPhone releasing on Appstore with same tab system as Android
- Chrome for iPad with overflow tab solution; also shows tabs open on other devices (pretty impressive)
- Incognito mode retained, with one-touch switching

I've been really really curious about 'pure' Android for a while now. I didn't want to commit to a Nexus phone, and most of the other tablet options were expensive or skinned.

This is really perfect to play with.

And if it sucks, I have plenty of friends who'll be grateful to take it second hand.

That was my problem.

On the desktop version of Chrome, go to Preferences > Settings > Advanced Sync Settings > then check the Encryption Passphrase option to see if it's set to your Google account password. If it's not, and you can't remember the passphrase, you'll have to reset it.

If you had the same problem as me, once you reset it, everything should be fine.

...the same way I would for a phone not having it, and in a sense I still can since - it's a fucking tablet, how can you NOT fit a damn SD slot on there?

But since a tablet of this sort would be just a secondary device for me, this wouldn't be a deal breaker since I'd have either a phone with me always that'll be doing >=32GB or my home network.

"Google’s Nexus 7 isn’t just an excellent tablet for $200. It’s an excellent tablet, period. In fact, it’s the first Android tablet that I can confidently recommend to buyers — and not just because it’s got a low price tag (though that certainly helps). It’s a well-designed, powerful, and useful product, with lots of bells and whistles that makes it feel like a device that should be more expensive than it is."

I'm thinking of picking one up and if it's not great as a tablet it sounds like it would be a great GPS device in the car (with offline maps from another App?.)

The line that stood out was: "..with lots of bells and whistles that makes it feel like a device that should be more expensive than it is."

I think it's because they are selling it at cost, like the Xbox or PS3. I wonder how the other Android Tablet makers feel about the drastically lowered price point? If there's no profit in the device I wonder how the business model moves forward. Google makes profit off of selling your data - will there be a profit sharing component for other tablet makers?

With the critical Amazon outage, which is the second this month, we wouldn’t be surprised if these popular services started looking at other options, including Rackspace, SoftLayer, Microsoft’s Azure, and Google’s just-introduced Compute Engine. Some of Amazon’s biggest EC2 outages occurred in April and August of last year.

Android manufacturers mostly mum on Jelly Bean updates as Google tries to repair a broken system

By Dieter Bohn on July 2, 2012 10:00 am

After any major OS update, the first question on everybody's mind is naturally "When can I get it?" As Android owners know all-too-well, the answer to that question inevitably involves waiting, rumors, innuendo, leaks, and often crushing disappointment. With the announcement of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean at Google I/O, there was the same hope there is for every Google I/O: that the situation would change. Sadly, it's not at all clear that it will — if the responses we've gotten from major Android OEMs is any indication.

In case you missed it, Google only listed a few "Nexus-class" devices that will receive Jelly Bean in July: the Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, and Motorola Xoom. To get beyond that, we reached out to several OEMs and most have given some variation on "no comment" when it comes to upgrading current devices to 4.1. Acer, Asus, and HTC all declined to comment on whether (to say nothing of when) 4.1 would arrive on their devices — though HTC did say "Watch this space for more information." LG told us it is evaluating Android 4.1 for current devices, but doesn't have anything official to announce. As of this writing, we've not yet heard back from Motorola, but will update this article if and when we do.

Samsung was slightly more forthcoming, reiterating that the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus (which it makes) will be receiving the update and that "additional devices" would be eligible for the Jelly Bean update:

Samsung will soon announce which additional devices are eligible for the Jelly Bean update. As the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, Samsung leads the Android community with best-in-class devices like the Galaxy S III, and is creating new device categories with products like the Galaxy Note. Samsung has delivered the most Nexus-branded lead OS devices and we are pleased that Google will be bringing Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S customers the first experiences of Jelly Bean on a handheld device.

It's probably a good bet that the Galaxy S III (at least) will be in line for an update, as a source told us that variants of the smartphone received a last-minute upgrade to two gigabytes of RAM so that it would be "future-proof." Jelly Bean itself certainly doesn't require that much RAM (The Galaxy Nexus has just 1GB and feels "buttery"), but it's quite possible that adding TouchWiz on top of Android 4.1 could.

Last year at Google I/O, the company promised that it would work with manufacturers to "create new guidelines for how quickly devices will get updated after new Android platform releases and for long they'll continue to get updated after that." A laundry list of companies committed to giving making sure that "new devices will receive the latest Android platform updates for 18 months after their first launch if the hardware allows." It's fair to say that the track record here is spotty across the board, thanks in part to that "if the hardware allows" technicality. In short, the situation with Jelly Bean is the same as it ever was: wait and see.

Stepping back from Android, you can see just how unique and troubling this situation really is. Although it hasn't made any explicit commitments in regard to updates, Apple has done a remarkable job ensuring that relatively recent iOS devices receive updates to the latest version. Even Microsoft has done a better job than Google here. Yes, it has said that current devices won't receive the full Windows Phone 8 update, so from that perspective the company has failed to do the work to keep its current users up-to-date. However, Microsoft has at least given its users clear and unambiguous guidance about what to expect. Google cannot corral even its closest partners into saying which devices will receive updates and when — last year's promise notwithstanding.

This year's version of an update promise is a new Google initiative called the "Platform Development Kit." Here's how Android's director of product management, Hugo Barra, explained the PDK:

like the SDK, but for Android hardware developers. It contains the necessary source code and low-level API documentation required to port Android to your hardware if you are a hardware developers. PDK will be available to Android device partners two to three months before the platform release date of all future Android versions.

We've actually started with this release — a beta of the Jelly Bean PDK has already been available to a few partners for the last few weeks and they've been providing us valuable feedback. We've incorporated that feedback and now it's available to everyone on an ongoing basis. PDK enables Android OEMs and chipset makers to innovate in parallel with Google and ensure the latest Android release can be well-optimized for their hardware.

Whereas previously only "Nexus" partners received early access to the next version of Android — with the rest sometimes only able to access it when Google fully open-sourced it, now it looks like there will be a two-stage process for future versions of Android. First, hardware partners will get access a few months before release, then everybody will be able to dig into the source code once it's officially available.

What will this do for the upgrade story for Android? Obviously, it's entirely too early to say. Presumably the hope is that those extra couple of months will give partners a head-start as they try to "port Android" (an interesting choice of words) onto their hardware, which would then mean more timely updates and perhaps even clearer guidance when new versions are officially announced. However, in the grand scheme of things, a few months is a fairly short timespan when it comes to software development.

Consider this: the Droid RAZR was announced on the same day as the Galaxy Nexus. Eight months later, the Android 4.0 update for the RAZR was released in the same week that Google announced Android 4.1. As much as many Android users would like manufacturers to sell more devices with a "stock" Android experience, the fact of the matter is that these companies are not likely to stop "skinning" Android anytime soon. In fact, "skinning" is really the wrong term for customizations like Sense and TouchWiz. Given how deeply these customizations go — often down to kernel changes — "porting" is much more apropos. "Porting" takes quite a bit longer than "skinning."

We will have to wait until the next version of Android, when Google gives OEMs early access to the PDK, to know whether this new policy will result in faster updates and clearer information. Even then, I'm not optimistic that it will result in a real change in how quickly Android updates are rolled out. The net effect of the PDK, then, may simply be to shift the blame from Google to OEMs when it comes to this waiting game. When the next version of Android is announced, Google can simply say "Well, we gave these OEMs access to the PDK two months ago, ask them why they don't have an update for you." When we do just that, it would be nice to believe that those manufacturers will have answers. Nice, but sadly not likely.

Technically speaking, the upgrade process from Gingerbread to ICS is huge. The transition from ICS to JB shouldn't be as bad.

The ROM community is a good meter stick for these types of things. The ICS source dropped many months ago and they're only just starting to release RC builds.

Of course none of this means that OEMs will actually put in the effort required for timely updates to Jellybean.

but highlighting the advent of the PDK package shows that Google at least is doing whatever they can to reduce fragmentation across the board.

Still up to the carriers/OEM's of course, but still a big step in the right direction.

Pretty much figured my MT4G is not getting an official release if it's taking CyanogenMod devs this long to drop that. IMO that seems like a huge reason why the graph is so tilted towards only 7% android users is on ICS to begin with & we aren't past double digits on that.

No swipe, tons of pictures

http://www.theverge.com/2012/7/3/3134347/android-4-1-jelly-bean-review

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is one of the best products Google has ever produced. It's fast, fluid, and beautifully designed. It also does a better job of unifying all of Google's disparate services than anything else the company has ever offered. Everything from the Chrome browser, Google+, Maps, Gmail, and most of all Google Search — in the form of Google Now — is tightly integrated into a user experience that outshines even the company's web properties.

Google Now stands out as an example of what smartphones are capable of when you don't silo information into disparate apps. Location, identity, history, and personal preferences are all combined into an organic information system that's as promising as it is ambitious. I don't think that Google Now quite achieves what it's aiming for yet, but it's exciting to see a company try to do it.

Reasonable people can — and should — disagree about whether Jelly Bean bests Apple's iOS or Microsoft's Windows Phone. In truth, I don't think we've seen everything that either of those competing operating systems will bring to the table by the end of the year. However, compared to what they bring to the table today, I think Jelly Bean is a stronger offering, especially if you're a participant in the Google ecosystem.

Still, the Android ecosystem still faces a fundamental fragmentation question. The majority of Android devices in consumers' hands today are now two versions behind Google's latest offering and the outlook for when that will change doesn't look very rosy. As nice as Jelly Bean as Google's smartphone OS, just how that can translate into a bright future for all of Android is another question entirely.

Didn't know about the orientation being locked vertically.

But yeah, this sounds otherwise pretty much how I'd expect it. Despite lack of proper fart apps or a large media catalog, Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, Spotify, Google Music, Evernote, Pocket and most of the other stuff I use regularly will run fine.

Looking really forward to this.

I thought I read that. Regardless, it's still a cool device. It's going to be hard to top.

However, I can't think that if the Samsung Tab 7 dropped down in price it wouldn't be a better buy.
