I still get compliments on my OG Galaxy S Epic 4g for Sprint almost daily. With a custom rom and screen tweaks people always mention how fast my phone is and how good the screen looks.

Come august I might upgrade, but this phone is still doing anything I want and does it quickly.

The S3 and One X are still badass though.

It's got Siri, LTE, crazy storage, airplay mirroring, NFC as well as all Apple swag. Featurewise it's an iphone running android. After purhasing this phone I'm struggling to see what else could be improved outside of the Pentile display and maybe a new graphics processor. This is the last phone anyone should need.

you decide you need 16GB instead of the 8 that you bought, you shit outta luck. by some brand new shit.

that's a big reason why i don't fuck w/ em.

my evo, that i'm prolly gonna replace w/ the s3, came w/ an 8gb card. but if i wanted to, at any time i could have bought a new and bigger one without replacing my whole phone.

Shove as many megapixels in a phone a you want, but unless they enlarge those sensors it don't mean shit. People buy into those MP numbers way too much.

At the time their camera was pretty dope & even exceeded the quality of some 8MP cameras that was out at the same time the iPhone 4 was out so a good chance Apple would keep this in mind to up the overall quality & not just the MP count. On the other hand their 8MP camera only seems like a marginal improvement to their 5MP shooter so who knows..

I'm pretty sure the other carriers are just calling it the one x, while sprints variant is called the evo and has a kickstand.

That is, I'm actually not in a rush for a new phone and I'm otherwise content with my MT4G which will reach it's 2 year old birthday come Nov.

Thus if these douchebags wait until midway summertime and I hear of something else in the pipeworks by someone else, I'm pretty much saying fuck this phone as awesome as I think it'll be if they're not definite on a time frame.

Sure, cater to everybody else but Samsung should learn from Nokia that Americans not buying your shit can eventually be a very very bad thing even if you are one of the top dogs. And while I'll just be looking across the Android platform for something that'll one up this before they push this out, a huge chunk of consumers who's not so platform biased is what they should REALLY be worried about that'll shit on this phone if iPhone 5 shit on this specs with a 4 inch retina display + 2inch ram and an even better camera.

In short, Samsung better release this shit in America ASAP or else they can suck a dick.

My HTC EVO has needed a new battery for over a month now.
I'd rather put that money towards the SG3.

UK is supposed to be the end of May.
I guess I can hold on until June, right?

I can't find any US release date information.

If anyone else has conundrum, consider this:

-The GS3 yields 50 GB of free Dropbox storage (two years I beleive) as opposed to 25 GB from HTC.

-GS3 is said to accept 64 GB microSD cards, while HTC is only advertised for 32. The GS2 was advertised as accepting 32, however I've read that it would still take 64 after formatting, so I dunno if the HTC would do the same.

I'm leaning toward waiting for the S3 so long as it comes out for Sprint before the end of July, since I'm sitting here with a beat to shit Lotus LG . I have my Galaxy player so music/movies etc are taken care of regardless, but I'll need the internet and smartphone capabilities before July is up for business reasons.

Overall the S3 seems like a significantly better product, I just don't know if it's enough to wait another two months for.

actually the screen looks better too from closeup pictures.

and the construction / material selection on the one x appears to be of higher quality.

one big thing for me is the battery, i still need to see some real world testing of the s3, but the specs look better, plus it's removable.

In response to Reply # 0

http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/25/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-review/

The best thing about the Galaxy S III? That it's more than the sum of its parts. Individually, the slightly larger and better display, stronger processor and faster camera may not sound that special, but in daily operation they score major combo points: gathering up all the best bits of the older Galaxy S II and re-working them into a solidly modern (read: mid-2012) device.

And the worst thing about the GS III? No matter how hard it tries, it just isn't greater than the sum of the HTC One X's parts. Last year's Galaxy S II landed on an unsuspecting world that was devoid of predators, but the GS III has no such luxury. The Snapdragon variant of the One X has similar computing power, battery life and photographic credibility, but it also has a much better user interface that sticks more closely to the guiding ethos of Android 4.0. It also has a more forward-looking physical design, while the GS III sticks to the tried and true styles of old. Perhaps the biggest sacrifice you'd make by going for the One X over the GS III is the loss of the cheap storage offered by the microSD card. That's a painful thing to give up, but given how deeply we feel about the need for Android to move forward and not get stuck in a Gingerbread-flavored groundhog day, we'll take the hit.

In response to Reply # 46
Fri May-25-12 04:22 PM by lc ceo

The engadget one reads like an HTC loyalist who doesn't really want to concede, and doesn't offer a solitary shred of an honest comparison between the two. All that guy gave us was a half hearted opinion on the design. I could see if he got down and dirty with the specs and a hardware/software compare and contrast, but nope..

http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/samsung-galaxy-s3-pounds-htc-one-x-into-benchmark-dust-50008054/

We've run the Samsung Galaxy S3 through a barrage of benchmark tests, with our results showing that Samsung's latest toy is a proper performance powerhouse that manages to beat the beefy HTC One X. Read on, folks, and brace for numbers.

In the Antutu benchmark, which tests memory, CPU speed and graphics, the S3 racked up an impressive 12,112 points, beating the One X, which scored 10,827 in the same test.

A similar benchmark, Quadrant, awarded the Galaxy S3 with 5,289 points, again beating the One X, which mustered a score of 4,904. The HTC One X ran GL Benchmark's Standard Egypt test at a rate of 52 frames per second, but was once more bested by the Galaxy S3, which ran the same test at 59fps -- the same score managed by the frighteningly powerful new iPad.

The 4.8-inch Galaxy S3 even beat Apple's frighteningly powerful new tablet in one of our browser tests. When we ran the SunSpider JavaScript benchmark (in which lower scores are better), the S3 scored 1,498.9ms, while the new iPad and iPad 2 took slightly longer with scores of 1,890.9 and 1,884.6 respectively. The S3's result also aces the iPhone 4S, which scored 2,181.6ms.

HTC clawed back one victory -- sort of. In the Vellamo browser test the S3's score of 2,077 wasn't as high as the app's database score for the HTC One XL, a phone that's not out in the UK yet.

Despite the HTC One X also offering a quad-core chip and a slightly higher clock speed, our tests show that it's not quite as powerful as the Galaxy S3. That could be down to the S3's Exynos 4 Quad chip being made by Samsung itself, while the Tegra 3 processor in the One X is built by Nvidia.

Number crunching aside, my expert colleague Natasha reckons the Galaxy S3 feels slicker to use than HTC's offering, with no lag or stutter as you cruise around the phone's Ice Cream Sandwich-flavoured interface.

It's worth noting that while it's pipped to the post by the S3 in performance stakes, the One X is still a very powerful smart phone. For more on the One X's performance click here, and for more on the Galaxy S3, including test shots from the phone's 8-megapixel camera, observe our in-depth review.

Are you planning on buying the S3? If you own the One X, what do you think of its performance? Sound off in the comments or on our Facebook wall.

48. "Here's another in-depth review of both: "
In response to Reply # 46

Trying to decide between the new Samsung Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X, or its brother, the EVO 4G LTE? Well, look no further. After testing both devices, we've broken down these two phones feature by feature to figure out which one is the best bang for your buck.

For years, we’ve compared nearly every new smartphone to the iPhone. Even today, it remains the best-selling phone of them all. Times are changing though. Excitement over Android handsets has always been scattered, but right now, everyone keeps asking me the same question: Should I get the One X (or the EVO 4G LTE) or wait for the Samsung Galaxy S3? For the first time, we’re seeing excitement for new Android handsets begin to rival the iPhone — at least more than ever before. Samsung has even acknowledged that more that more than 10 million people have pre-ordered the S3 before it even has a launch date or carrier support here in the US.

So which should you buy? Samsung and HTC are clearly attempting to duke it out. These handsets are nearly identical in many ways, but if you’re going to lay down cash for a top phone, you want the best. And so we bring you our guide to picking which handset is better for you: the HTC One X, which is known as the EVO 4G LTE on Sprint or the Samsung Galaxy S3.

One X vs EVO 4G LTE
There are few differences between these two phones and they are both on different carriers: The One X is on AT&T and the EVO 4G LTE is on Sprint. We will say that in almost every small way, the EVO outshines the One X. It has a better Super LCD screen (same resolution), comes with a cool kickstand, has physical camera shutter button, has a slot for a microSD card (though the One X has twice as much internal storage at 32GB), and the EVO has a slightly larger battery at 2,000mAh, compared to the 1,800mAh battery in the One X. However, in the rest of the article we will treat this as an HTC vs Samsung battle. If only one of the two HTC phones is better, we will point that out.

Winner: EVO 4G LTE

Design and construction
A good looking phone to you may not be a good looking phone to me. Choosing a phone based solely on its design is a personal choice. We can make a couple observations though. Both HTC and Samsung have chosen to build their phones out of plastic, but while Samsung has gone its traditional route, creating a phone with a very typical shiny plastic-like feel to it, HTC stepped it up a notch and wrapped the One X in a polycarbonate unibody that is finely tailored to have a great, solid feel. The benefits of polycarbonate are many: it is much more durable than traditional plastic, handles the elements better, and because the One X uses it, that white design isn’t paint, so if you chip the phone or scratch it (it’s harder to scratch), the entire shell is white underneath — there’s no paint to scratch off. The HTC One X screen also bends a bit over the edges.

The Galaxy S3 also uses polycarbonate, which is good, but has a more traditional, layered design to it. It’s still one of the better looking phones out there, but its shiny white design picks up fingerprints and it just doesn’t look as premium as the One X. To be fair, the design of the EVO 4G LTE isn’t exactly mind blowing either. It’s shell is half-shiny plastic and half aluminum with a black matte finish and red stripe that pulls out as a kickstand

Winner: One X

Feel
Feel is another subjective category. We will say that all three of these phones are absolutely huge, and probably too large for a lot of phone buyers. The EVO 4G LTE and One X are both fairly comfortable, though we prefer the One X by a hair due to the shape of its sides, which bend inward toward the screen to help you keep a better grip on the phone. Both the One X and EVO 4G LTE have a power button on the top right (port) of the phone and a long volume toggle on the ride side. The Galaxy S3 is curvier than either of the HTC designs, and had a feel that was reminiscent of the Galaxy Nexus, which I like. The power button is on the right side of the phone (toward the top) and the volume toggle is on the left side, but it’s shorter and located about two-thirds of the way up the side. Having the power and volume buttons separated like this feels more comfortable for me, but if you’re someone with smaller hands (again, don’t buy any of these phones), then you might have trouble reaching that far.

Though Android 4.0 doesn’t require physical navigation buttons (see: Galaxy Nexus), both HTC and Samsung have chosen to retain them. However, the version of the Galaxy S3 that we tried, also featured an iPhone-like Home button as well, and reversed the multitasking and Back buttons, oddly.

Overall, this category comes down to preference. After a few days, you’ll get used to either phone.

Winner: Tie

User interface
All three of these phones run on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), which is great, but they both look different nonetheless.

HTC’s custom interface is called HTC Sense 4.0 and looks a lot like its previous interfaces, though some of the edges have been smoothed over. All of the core Android 4.0 features are intact, but many of them have been modified to feature more blacks and more customization. As usual, HTC has the most and widest variety of widgets and pre-installed apps, making it a great first smartphone. Both HTC phones have the same interface.

Though the One X and EVO 4G LTE attempt to make Android 4.0 feel more like previous versions of Google’s OS, Samsung has gone a different route, claiming that the Galaxy S3′s version of TouchWiz UI is inspired by “human emotion” and “nature” (why pick just one marketing slogan?). As much as we hate gimmicky stuff, we found the new interface to be extremely pleasant. The unlock screen is animated water, allowing you to swipe across waves to unlock the phone, and the rest of the interface has a relaxing, blue tone to it, filled with new icons and a decidedly pleasant set of water sounds. If you held a gun to my head, I’d probably opt for the vanilla Android experience on the Galaxy Nexus, but Samsung is on to something. The S3 has a fresher look to it that doesn’t tinker around with too much. Users can enjoy the new colors and elegance but don’t have to relearn how to use an Android phone either.

What is it called? Touch Wiz? The engadget review talked about how Samsung's skin kinda set the SGIII back. Said it doesn't seem like ICS, but more like Gingerbread. It's not a deal breaker for me but it has me eyeing/waiting for the Google handsets that are going to drop in December.

i'm not worried about rooting though. its pretty easy. not only can you put custom roms or launchers on there, but even if you don't and keep touchwiz you can at least remove all the bloatware that the cell company throws on the phone. the htc one x got rooted in the first day it was available. them hackers are on it!

They'll probably make use of the tools on XDA, but you don't have to wade through all those 100+ reply threads to see what's relevant for your situation.

Then once you get the hang of how the general rooting/flashing process works, navigating XDA becomes a little less daunting.

data throughput is the bottleneck for these phones.

htc is gonna pay big for this customs shit.

they still don't have phones available to buy, just display models out there, and now samsung drops this timely announcement.

htc missed out on at least a month of very little or no competition.

would anyone go out and buy the one x now, with availability still being poor, and the s3 only a few weeks away?

batteries are getting slightly more energy dense, but the direction in mobile device design seems to be miniaturizing everything inside while keeping the huge battery.

we're reaching limits in li ion technology where it's not going to be possible to double the energy density, no matter how much money and effort is thrown at r&d. so we're stuck with having to charge every night, until someone can develop revolutionary energy storage technology...

My co-worker (who is really into cellphones) said I should get it but my gs2 does everything I need and I haven't began to tap into everything this phone is capable of doing yet. So I'm good. Plus is 4.8 inch screen really that much bigger than 4.52?

Unless there's an extra long delay on it from Sprint that is.
The Lotus finally stopped working all together unless it's plugged in, so I had to cop something right away. Hopefully the S3 hits on schedule and these Apple cocksuckers don't get their way, at least before I can snag one and the 30 day exchange period ends.

Sprint, to counteract the quality of their insanely consumer-friendly "truly unlimited data" policy, decided to drop down to a 14 day policy last year. BB has 30 days to return, as well as a "whatever happens, we'll take care of that shit" insurance policy that ass fucks Sprints.

My wife gets excellent 3G most places on her iPhone 4S. I get terrible 3G everywhere. I work two blocks from a damn tower and the 3G is absolute shit. It's a common complaint, and it seems Sprint customers return their 4G LTE and get an old 4G or 3G. There are a ton of reports on the Sprint forums of people who have to power cycle, reset, update profiles, firmware, etc multiple times a day just for a short time of decent 3G coverage. I've went through every tutorial, walk through, etc that I can find to get this thing to work. It seems to be a known issue and the consensus is there's a flaw in the phone, though some people are saying they haven't had a problem whatsoever. One guy started emailing all the major tech sites about it.

I actually like the phone for anything but streaming anything. Problem is, I pay the extra 10 bucks a month for having a smart phone in addition to paying a premium for unlimited data so I can do shit like stream netflix and hbo go and rhapsody at work. It took 25 fucking minutes to download a 5MB directtv app today. I get maybe two minutes at most on netflix or youtube. If I were you, I would wait for the S3 unless you absolutely need a phone.

I have a coworker streaming netflix as we speak, ten feet away from me. All day, every day, she streams netflix.

If you're in a 3g coverage area, this phone is a waste oftime, money, space, and energy. I hope to god the S3 doesn't have this issue.

the signal there isn't very good. it seems like the phone keeps switching modes and then the connection totally drops, no calls, no data, no text. sometimes i have to completely restart the phone. it's making me consider switching to the s3 on verizon.

going to go check it out in-store, not going to the sprint hands on event here in ATL for this (no way I could have made it downtown during rush hour)

Looks like they will buy back my epic for $60 (that will probably have me looking at the 32 gig one then)

My Galaxy S is pretty much dead and I was up for renewal anyways. Got some damage insurance with it as well, my 9000i is probably in this state because I dropped it a couple of times.. Which seems pretty much unavoidable over 2 year time span.

I can't wait, even though I feel like such a consumer whore.

I have a friend considering importing the international version of the S3 due to that quad core chipset.

The HSPA+ version topped out at 9 Mbps. Is LTE really necessary in this phone? Should my friend buy the international version or cope the LTE version?

Because I'm hearing the 3G is shit for the S3 as well. All three LTE phones from Sprint have 3G signal issues.

I would wait until LTE rolls out and see how it's working before I cop an LTE phone from Sprint. It's too late for me, but oh well. My area is supposedly slated for phase two of the LTE network vision plan so I'll just hold out hope it actually happens. No sense in going backward to a 3G phone at this point, as I doubt that already maligned network is going to receive any attention whatsoever from here on out. May as well suck it up and roll the dice since I'm already on the hook.

Older Evo's, iPhone 4s, S2's, etc, are all working perfectly fine in the exact same places the Evo 4G LTE is, for example. Sprint community forums are rampant with identical observations.

Two weeks ago I was in Best Buy, full bars, couldn't stream anything. At home, my wifes 4S streams perfectly fine. I get nothing. In the office, there are two people with Evo 4G's that get solid, if unspectacular, streaming. I get nothing with the 4G LTE. Again, Sprint forums are pretty rampant with pretty much identical reports with other LTE phones.

This particular issue is inherent in a lot of the LTE phones. Some are able to run 3G just fine, but ther seems to be a lot that just flat don't run 3G for shit.

149 is less than the 249 sprint was gonna charge me. turns out it was for the 16GB version. :-/. but that's still 50 bucks better than sprint. *shrug*. besides, i haven't filled up my 16GB card on my EVO 4G.

i'll throw a 32 GB card in the s3 and won't nobody be able to tell me nothing.

Only draw back on the Razr HD is that it has 1GB of RAM vs. the 2 on this. But the HD does have the battery of the Razr MAXX...

Seems they're up to doing RC on some phones, mainly the Nexus jawns. If this gets their treatment this may still be a option for when a nigga stops being broke.

i did drop my evo once about a yr ago but it survived.

this s3 has a slippery plastic case though, could be dangerous so i got the insurance.

i guess if you had an iphone and wanted to distinguish yours from everyone else's, then a case would make sense.

for a long long time. maybe with more then half their contract done.
Kansas city is now up and running, so hopefully the rest will follow like dominoes. seattle dont look soon according to this.
i would be happy if they lit them up little by little without the whole city being live. they should do like every sprint store. and like NBA arenas since they have a deal with them or something.

i live in a smaller city and thought it was unlikely that sprint would actually get their act together and establish lte in my area, even by the end of another 2 year contract.

if they do, then i might consider switching back.

i definitely use wifi alot around town, but for the times i'm on the go and not at a coffee shop or some other building then it is definitely nice to have that extra speed. right now though my epic is starting to do some funky things and instead of getting a replacement via insurance, i might as well get a new phone since my upgrade is in 2 weeks.

In response to Reply # 0

1) The phone is really fast and responsive...
2) First android phone I have had where the apps aren't crashing constantly...very impressed by that...
3) My signal strength isn't good in my opinion. My wife has a Droid Razr MAXX and she would have 3 bars of LTE and I would have 2 or 3 Bars of 3G on the S3. I have been using this Open Signal Maps App to compare dbm between what Settings say and the apps say and the results aren't encouraging. For 3G comparisons, its the same. For LTE comparisons, its a 30 dbm difference between the Open Signal Maps and what the S3 settings say which makes me believe that my phone isn't properly displaying the dbm levels.
4) I have experience more dropped calls this past week, than I have in the past 2 years. I am trying to convince Verizon to let me have a extended return policy since they have admitted that it needs a software update.

While I like the phone, and I am coming from a iphone 4S, i need the phone portion to work. I have had way too many dropped calls. Are there any other users that have seen the same problems with the calls and signal strength?

those guys don't want to accept that there is a problem...

Can you or anybody else with LTE try something for me?

Download the Open Signal Maps App and do a comparison of dbm between what the app says and what your settings says under About Device -> Status???

I want to see if there is a delta between dbm on LTE networks. Verizon wouldn't let me download the app in-store. I considered swapping out my 32 GB for a 16 GB but they wouldn't do it without charging me the restocking fee and they said I would be stuck with the 16 GB. If the 16 GB version has the same problem, then i'll just go back to my iPhone 4S and wait for the new iPhone. I need to be able to make phone calls...

At first I was worried a bit about the size, but it doesn't bother me at all any more.

Battery life is great, I only have to charge it once every two days or so. To be fair, I have a black background (samoled uses less energy for black pixels), I turn on its energy saving mode quite often (dims the screen a bit, not sure if it also scales down cpu cycles etc.) and I usually turn off mobile data connection at night. All these functions are in the notification bar btw, so it's no hassle at all.

Acquiring GPS lock is fast as hell, very reliable performance after that.

Browsing is super fast, and it seems to make much better use of wifi/g3 than my Galaxy S did.

UI works smooth and looks fine. Plenty of customization options out of the box.

i don't like the way s3 feels in my hand sometimes. it has a shiny plastic back that feels slimy sometimes. and the one x screen is definitely better. but one x is on att which sucked for me, so i had to go with verizon.

with that said, galaxy s3 is still a great phone and combined with verizon, it's better than anything else out.

honestly, i couldn't really say one was definitely better than the other. both were nice.

i know what you are saying about the slick plastically feel. i felt the same way about the palm pre a couple years ago. i put on a clear plastic body protector (film, not case) and it helped immensely. phantomskinz was the brand. i used them for my epic as well, great protective films.

Saw this tutorial and it seemed the easiest out of all the ones I researched.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=009uFCITfLo

I've never rooted a phone before but the idea of having stock Jelly Bean is much better than that Samsung skin it comes with. Based on the video, you just download 4 .zip files (CM09, CM10, gapps & modem) and then have the phone open them up and install them. All the other videos and instructions I saw required a lot of other steps.

Phone arrives tomorrow so I hope it works.

Again, I'm new. So you have to root the phone first to get supermod access.

Then you flash the mod from the xda developers on the phone (ie. CM10).

Plus you have to worry about the flash count?

Is this all correct?

No matter which rom you pick the phone needs to be rooted first, then you flash the rom and any necessary apps. Once you've done it once you'll see its very simple. I'm not sure about this flash count you mention but I'll look into it because my s3 comes friday. I'm typing this on a rooted Epic.

from recovery you can wipe the samsung rom and cache, and load the new rom.

i haven't done it yet with s3 but you're right, some of the samsung skinning is stupid. i want the ics dialer back.

Upgrade time. Probably won't bother trying to root my Evo Shift and just get a new phone as the upgrade time is here. Since I'm on Sprint, and it's looking like a good phone with a keyboard is now a thing of the past, I've got 3 choices

Nexus
SIII
Evo4G-never-seeLTE

Kinda torn here. Nexus is older and lower proc spec, but it may not matter (now) in real world use, and will likely be much smoother than my Shift. Plus, it will be 1st up for OTA updates. And at $99 it's the cheapest. The SIII is probably the fastest (highest proc spec) and can be rooted easily enough (I think). I hate the color of both though (a case may help, but still). Always liked the design of an HTC phone (hell, can't say anything physically wrong with the Shift) and I'm used to Sense. Still, HTC isn't always the quickest on an update, and rooting is tricky from time to time. Both the Evo and SIII run the same at $199.

I guess the question is would the $100 bump be worth it over the Nexus, especially if it can be rootedand the SIII stuff ported to it. All will be on the crappy 3G service in the DMV until they flip the switch, so there's no loss or gain over th eothers there.

In response to Reply # 158

The upgrade was through the 'Spring Premier' plan that they cancelled. Under the program they allowed you to upgrade every year instead of every two. Even though they cancelled the program, they allowed those who hadn't used the upgrade to still be eligible through the end of the year. So, I'm not 100% sure if I'm out of contract now or if I'm still in for another year (which would go to 3 if I take the upgrade for the new phone). Been with Nextel/Sprint for such a fucking long time I don't even know anymore, I tell you...

And now that changes things. Although I'm not a fan of Blur or whatever they want to call what the Razr has on it (wife is on Big Red and copped one when her pre bit the dust. Nice but eh...). Not even sure how updates and rooting will go on this. Still, it looks like an upgrade to my Shift, and unless HTC drops something I'll really need to think about this. Let's see the pricing

I just got the Galaxy S3 as a work device and it's pretty nice. I'm surprised at how much lighter/thinner it is than my personal phone.

I can't rock with touchwiz though. The stock experience is much more pleasant to use imo. Hell, I had to opt out of 2-3 "special offers" just to use the thing for the first time.

i still haven't set up the phone how i want, but i did root it right away yesterday and flashed the BlazerRom. Blazer is basically just stock TW with speed and battery tweeks, bloatware removed, etc...

anyway, i am really surprised by the battery life so far. granted i used it minimally today since i am at work, but i'm currently almost at 15 hours off the charger with 51% battery left over. crazy.

I assumed both rooting and flashing ROM's on your phone voided your warranty.

And something about a flash count.

I don't have many complaints regarding TouchWiz at the moment and I've never rooted a phone, so I doubt I'll try. Just curious if the differences are that stark between ICS/TouchWiz and the stock Jelly Bean versions floating around for GS3.

What does jb really add anyway. There are plenty of fast and stable ICS ROMs out there. I use Odexed Blue and it is awesome.

and I don't even have hardware as good as the SIII (Samsung Infuse, it's basically the Galaxy SII with a single-core processor). Project Butter has really improved the overall feel, going through menus, screen transitions--everything is just faster.

Anyway, if you're interested in a custom ROM, this is your jam: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1672

Wow, that's very impressive. I'm going to do some research before I root the device and upload Jelly Bean myself, but that's amazing that you noticed such an increase in performance. Just out of curiosity, did you phone have TouchWiz or some kind of pre-installed feature onto of the Android kernel operating system? I like TouchWiz so far on the GS3, but if it is potentially hampering the OS performance, perhaps I should have went with the Nexus Galaxy instead.

Well, I rooted my phone the day I got it, and I've had a variety of ROMs since--mostly Infuse-specific variants of CyanogenMod (from 7.0 to the current 10.0 Jelly Bean variants). The phone came with TouchWiz out of the box, but the reason I switched from an iPhone was specifically so that I could get rid of the bloat and crap I didn't use, and personalize my phone. So I haven't seen TouchWiz in over a year, and I've never missed it. Every time I install a new ROM, I end up flashing it over a previous version.

Other than being able to get rid of carrier-provided bloatware and skins, I think a lot of people use custom ROMs for the increase in performance and battery life--I've been extremely happy with these. Now, not every ROM will improve performance/battery life, and you always run the risk of a "bad flash" (basically a bad install of a ROM, where something will fuck up, causing issues like reboot loops or dropped service). Usually just repeating every step from scratch will sort out any issues from a bad flash, and I've never seen one so bad it bricked my phone.

If you're trying to update your phone with the newest, most cutting-edge ROMs, you're usually going to deal with some work-in-progress issues: 720p recording is choppy, wifi drops out, failure to lock on GPS, that sort of thing. So unless you're comfortable wiping your phone clean with some frequency, you might want to pick something that's a little more final, and less "I just finished this shit last night, it's the new-new."

Best advice I can give you--when flashing a new ROM, FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS TO THE LAST WORD. Seriously. If they tell you to do a full system wipe/factory restore, then wipe the cache, THEN wipe the cache again, then shake your phone for 60 seconds...just do it. If you can follow instructions, you can do pretty much anything with an Android phone. XDA is a great resource, and the SIII has a huge support/developer base, so there should be plenty to choose from.

(Also: for my phone at least, I don't think you can go straight from stock-->root-->Jelly Bean. All the Jelly Bean ROMs I've seen need to be flashed on top of an ICS ROM, so you might have to do ICS first. Then again, I'm pretty sure the SIII comes with ICS stock, so you should be fine. Just something to watch out for. Follow the directions.)

EDIT: Titanium Backup is your best friend. I think it's about $5 in the Play store for the Pro version, but if you plan on rooting and installing new ROMs, it's a godsend. Interface isn't too clear at first, but once you figure it out it's dead simple to backup every app with a touch, then restore them in moments on a new ROM.

I'll sit down this weekend and do my research before I root my phone. Thanks again for your input and I'm sure I'll probably go the back-up route since this phone is a godsend so far and I'd feel like an idiot ruining it, especially since I just recently received it.

I read that there's an improved Google Voice Search feature added to to Jelly Bean upgrade that dropped yesterday for the Nexus Galaxy and Nexus S. I'd assume the GS3 would have that feature as well. I hope TouchWiz doesn't screw up that feature somehow.

...and you'll be glad you did. Carrier-specific skins are shit.

One note on the improved Google Now voice search in Jelly Bean--it runs like shit on my phone. Again, I have much older hardware than you, so it might just hum along on an SIII. But for my Infuse, I just opted out of Google Now and forget it exists.

Rooted them both so they could get free wifi tether (the boy needs it for his rooted Kindle Fire on the job, the girl, not really sure why just yet)). I didn't flash any ROMs for them as it would just cause more problems as they are much less tech minded, so whenever Sammy and Spring are ready to release Jelly Bean OTA they will get it then

Intresting little tweeks here at there. Looks as if the battery usage improved with the Jelly Bean update, which is impressive because the phone was already nice with its power usage with the Touch Wiz'ed Ice Cream Sandwich. I imagine the power usage would be better if I went with stock Jelly Bean, but this phone is just too gorgeous for me to risk bricking it.

I'm on T-Mobile in case anyone cares.
