First off, a PSA: smartphones and riding mowers do not mix. The More You Know...
Next, the phone. HTC knows how to build a phone. This shit just feels solid in a way my Pre never could. It's not without it's faults, mind you. The slider doesn't quite have that positive spring loaded snap at the end (though it doesn't feel like it's going to move while in place), I've got to get used to the spacing on the keypad, the power button is on a weird angle, making hitting it wonky, and the volume button always gets hit when I use the keyboard. Small niggles aside, the phone has a nice balance, weight, and feel like something you would want to carry around. It's about the thickness of my ipod classic, so it's not too bad, and it doesn't look like I'm carrying around a pop tart with a screen like the Evo.
This Android shit is something. It really is something techy people can get behind with everything you can tweak and install. While I am used to the clean home screen WebOS gave you, the ability to have a shitload of programs and widgets available off the break is nice. It's going to take a while to figure out exactly how I want those 7 screens set up, especially since there seems to be no rhyme or reason for the sized of some of these widgets. Navigation, settings, and notifications aren't close to the ease of WebOS, and the multitasking bit is a no win for Android or iOS. If you never used it, it really is that big a difference. Swiping between shit beats multiple taps everyday. But, the plethora of apps ease that pain to a degree. Since Google is trying to rule the world, it makes sense it integrated every desktop application on it. That's something that, while Big Brother is definitely watching, I can really appreciate. Calendar and contacts? No problem. Blogger updates? Sure. Gmail? D'uh! Google Music? Love it. Everything isn't quite polished, mind you, but there really is the sense you can do damn near anything with this little 3.6 inch slider.
This phone really makes me mad at Palm/HP. I've said it before, and so have others. But if they put WebOS on hardware like this, it would win. Then they may attract customers, and attract developers, and survive. I really want them to survive. If I had money to throw away I'd have the Touchpad right now. Maybe HP will get their head out their ass and either license the OS or actually make a phone people will want to buy. If so, and they are around when my reup time comes, I'd consider switching back. Until then, I'm sadly going with the darkside.
Imma have to blog this at some point <-- Dave Thomas knows what's up... __________________________
