I still have just barely cracked the 1300 page book that covers it. So short answer is I still am planning on mastering it...

while it continues to grow and grow.

I've been hacking around with this:
https://github.com/pmolettiere/fitbit4j

and I saw their example app is based on Spring. Seems like a massive waste of time to learn and set up just so I can step through their program. assholes.

same princples of rails in that it's more about configuration than writing code.

if you meant rails I don't know. it's still single threaded and mind-numbingly simple.

as fractured as the java world is Spring does provide a standard to unify it all.

Cluster fuck it may be....it's full of patterns that fly over my head.

Hell just connecting a db to hibernate is like 2 xmls and a 4 files.

I'll make sense of it one day.

Do a lot of companies use Eclipse? When you're working for a software development company, do you get to choose what type of IDE/API to program in or is there a specific one you have to use for that company?

You'll find people either use Eclipse, IntelliJ, or are completely old school and use a text editor like vim. You often get a choice but that is also because you have to maintain your own machine. The important thing is that your code works anywhere.

Sometimes though you'll encounter places that will have images for the machines they use and that way they standardized the environments people use.
