"iPad 2. March 2."

http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/23/apples-holding-an-event-on-march-2nd-well-be-there-live/

Hey look at that! The rumors were true. Apple will be holding a media event on March 2nd... and Engadget will be there live covering the whole thing. As you can tell by the image above (sent with the invite), this is going to be all about tablets -- iPads, to be exact.

without having to buy adapters and shit. Not being able to access external media sources on thy fly, in the moment, severely limits the allure of a consumption device.

My guess is that you are traveling a lot. You'll
need an actual computer for a consulting job,
because you'll be producing high quality presentations
and analyzing lots of data. The software on an iPAD
is good for reading and manipulating data to a
point, but not sufficient to create a nice presentation
and conduct higher-powered presentations.

The nice thing about a tablet is that it permits
reading, analyzing data, checking emails, and
micromanaging the little things. Its also nice if
you are traveling a lot and traveling farther
distances.

A tablet and a laptop is the best combo, but if you
needed one for a consulting job I'd go with the MBP.

Without paying extra for Windows 7 and parallels. There is software for W7 that you can't use on Mac, without paying extra. I don't think its worth it.

I would just get a regular windows laptop.

that isn't on mac, unless you boot camp or parallels. My work laptop (company supplied) is fort knox, all types of security software and hardware that isn't all mac compatible.

There is a difference between business software and design software. We already know that macbooks are killer in design software, but he needs business software and possibly hardware.

So apple tax + parallels + windows 7 (with xp mode) or xp = an expensive ass computer for an internship with a possibility that it won't be compatible with required security hardware.

He needs to check with his point of contact about what kind of laptop.

HDMI 1080P with DD out available

I wish the WIFI versions had GPS in them.

Also wish that there was HDMI input or camera Connectivity that would allow for preview/focus of Canon 7D camera in video mode.

And the BURTALITY against Android durign the presentation. 100 apps. All iPads except one under $799. Just brutal slaps.

At least, assuming what I've read about 512 MB RAM is correct.

People will come back and say ipad 2 has a more mature tablet OS and starts $100 cheaper than the Xoom. But still, I don't see how this is the huge leap forward people are trying to sell it as.

Not that it matters to me. All of these tablets still seem completely useless to me.

it isn't about a huge tech leap forward. It's about giving people what they want for a price they will pay. In that arena, Apple is owning the tablet game. It's even kinda insulting to say they "own" it, because at this point it's not even looking like something someone else could own in the future. It's more like tablets are Apple's kids.

but they are fun as hell...i use my ipad almost every day.

and the whole "better specs" argument is why no one is going to pose a serious threat to the iPad in the tablet market. these old school PC companies are touting processor speed and memory...consumers don't give two shits about specs. they want something that looks sexy, is easy as hell to use and has the best apps.

that's why Apple comes up with bullshit marketing speak like "Retina Display" and they talk about 10 hour battery life and show grandparents FaceTiming with their family...that's the shit people actually care about in a device.

the combo of size/power/battery life

is what makes it convenient to use, and I'm really doubting any of the competition matches them on any of those three (maybe processing power, but now you have to show me what you'll do with it and it's probably the least important of the three) this year.

it's truly unfortunate I don't consider iOS particularly useful and I'd much prefer a 7-inch tablet cuz they hit the other parts right where they needed to.

the price is still too high but again, it doesn't look like the competition is going to be giving them any scares there either in the next 12 months.

also, for traveling, something that runs 10+ hours and I can pretty easily do email, watch movies at a decent size and browse the web etc. on makes sense

I'm not quite ready to lay down my cash for one, but I'm looking at the ipad 2 and what the competitors have done so far and it doesn't look like they're catching apple yet.

It's the only Android-based tablet that's really caught my eye thus far.

I'm an HTC stan, I can't really deny that: I think they make very good, well-designed hardware, and Sense is my favorite interface of overlay (although admittedly, with all the garbage out there, it's kind of like saying I've picked the least ugly handicapped girl). The stylus as an OPTION - not sole means of input - is intriguing.

It's the Minority Report linear video editing interface we've been waiting for.

for a total in of roughly 500 bucks, you get an incredibly mobile solution for rough cuts with a built-in camera, that can output to an HDMI monitor for dailies.

The editing software is FIVE DOLLARS.

That is insane.

i don't know if there's an existing wireless solution to transfer pictures from a camera to the ipad, but someone needs to make one...and get rich, cuz that would be amazing for on-location shoots.

i know they have the wifi SD card...i'm sure there's a way to patch all that together.

When the white one was announced. I know a couple other peeps ready to preorder. Another coworker once to sell hers and reup. I'm tempted but I don't see the overwhelming need to upgrade. I've only had this puppy since Xmas and I'm still happy with mine. Plus it was my graduation gift so it has some sentimental value (engraved).

I'm most surprised this ships next week.

16GB iPad 1 = $499
16GB iPad 2 = $499

let's say you can sell the iPad 1 for $399....
-$499 + $399 - $499 = -$599

I guess you could sell a 32GB iPad 1 and step down to a 16GB iPad 2...
i dunno, either way doesn't seem like the new "features" justify the costs to me.

In response to Reply # 0

"Apple isn't just challenging perceptions of the PC -- they're saying
that the age of the PC is over (at least for most people). The company
is forcing consumers to ask if they even still want or need something
called a PC (while of course making sure to point out that the
competition is playing the same old game). And really, that's all part
of the plan. Apple is in the process of making the iPad the de-facto
standard for what the next stage of computing looks like, from the
look and feel to the kind of software and experiences you have on the
device. Apple doesn't just want to own the market -- it wants to own
the idea of the market. We've seen this act before, and we know how it ends."

http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/03/editorial-its-apples-post-pc-world-were-all-just-living/

---

- while the competition's marketing *may* be outdated, I don't buy
the idea that HoneyComb, TouchPad, PlayBook are hopelessly behind
on the experience they offer users or that HoneyComb is so much more
difficult to use

- the main point: consumer devices are becoming more... consumer-friendly--at least where ease of use is concerned. and as ppl have
been saying for a while, this trend will influence OSX and Windows,
creating a blend of old and new user models

- all told, this really just seems like the culmination of older,
disparate trends like app stores, simpler UI and UX. how is Apple
competing on the overall experience (vs power) any different than
the familiar Mac loyalist argument, "while your PC may have better specs,
it still doesn't run Mac OS"?

104. "CNet: Gartner prophesies Apple's post-PC era"
In response to Reply # 88

March 3, 2011 8:52 PM PST
Gartner prophesies Apple's post-PC era
by Brooke Crothers

Steve Jobs would have you believe that the post-PC era is here. Market researcher Gartner seems to agree.

At the rollout of the iPad 2 yesterday, the Apple CEO's carefully calculated musings about the post-PC world were meant to sow just enough doubt in consumers' minds that they think twice when buying that second PC. (And he was also careful to couch this as the post-PC era, not the post-Mac era. You can have your cake and eat it too if you're Apple, apparently.)

Maybe Gartner sees this as a self-fulfilling prophesy. Whatever the case, the market research firm made some dark prognostications today about the future of PCs. It seems that tablets will not be "additive"--a word that Intel likes to use--but subtractive. In short, instead of opting for that second PC and then maybe a tablet on top of that, consumers will opt for just the tablet.

"We expect growing consumer enthusiasm for mobile PC alternatives, such as the iPad and other media tablets, to dramatically slow home mobile PC sales, especially in mature markets," George Shiffler, research director at Gartner, said in a research note today. "We once thought that mobile PC growth would continue to be sustained by consumers buying second and third mobile PCs as personal devices. However, we now believe that consumers are not only likely to forgo additional mobile PC buys but are also likely to extend the lifetimes of the mobile PCs they retain as they adopt media tablets and other mobile PC alternatives as their primary mobile device."

That last sentence is powerful. A consumer will hold off on buying a new PC and allocate that money instead to a tablet or other mobile device--like a high-end smartphone.
And the verdict? "Overall, we now expect home mobile PCs to average less than 10 percent annual growth in mature markets from 2011 through 2015."

Overall, Gartner is lowering its PC unit forecast for 2011 and 2012. Worldwide PC shipments are forecast to reach 387.8 million units in 2011, a 10.5 percent increase from 2010, according to Gartner's preliminary forecast. But this is down from Gartner's previous projection of 15.9 percent growth this year. And Gartner expects worldwide PC shipments to total 440.6 million units in 2012, a 13.6 percent increase from 2011. This is also down from Gartner's previous outlook of 14.8 percent growth for 2012.

There were other factors too, like China. "These results reflect marked reductions in expected near-term unit growth based on expectations of weaker consumer mobile PC demand, in no small part because of the near-term weakness expected in China's mobile PC market, but also because of a general loss in consumer enthusiasm for mobile PCs," said Ranjit Atwal, another Gartner analyst.

But Gartner devoted most of the note to tablets. In a section titled "PCs' Limitations Are Exposed," Gartner said that "not too long ago, PCs were a 'fashion accessory' in mature markets with vendors linking themselves to fashion designers and even creating PCs specifically for women. The current 'cool' device is the smartphone, and now PCs will soon have to do battle with media tablets when they are launched in large numbers in the second quarter of 2011."

Mobile PCs are not keeping up with the times, according to Gartner. "Mainstream mobile PCs have not shed sufficient weight, and do not offer the all-day battery life, to substantiate their promise of real mobility. These limitations have become all the more apparent with the rapid spread of social networking, which thrives on constant and immediate connections. In short, all-day untethered computing has yet to materialize, and that has exposed the 'mobile' PC as merely a transportable PC at best," according to the note.

Steve Jobs' reality distortion takes its toll on truth
Posted by Seth Weintraub
March 3, 2011 9:20 AM

Apple twisted facts and used an erroneous quotation to try to convince crowds that all other tablets had no shot at de-throning the iPad in 2011.

In what seems like a ritual at this point, I watched Apple's iPad 2 keynote in disbelief, noting the factual errors that kept coming up minute after minute. See previous:

How Steve Jobs turned a finger spot into a death grip
Google responds to Steve Jobs' activation counting accusations
Why does Android have Steve Jobs rattled?
So, let's get started: As part of the opening iPad bullet points, Apple included this gem:

"First dual core tablet to ship in volume." That's funny, I tested a Dell (DELL) Streak 7, which had a dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 chip in January. They've been shipping ever since on T-Mobile.

In volume.

Of course, the Motorola (MMI) XOOM also has this same dual core processor and is certainly shipping in volume as well. In fact, I've been using an Android phone (the Atrix) with a dual core chip for weeks and it wasn't the first to ship in volume. As for Apple (AAPL), they haven't shipped one iPad 2 yet -- iPad 2's hit shelves on March 11.

Perhaps this has to do with Jobs' subjective view of 'Volume' which may start at whatever numbers iPads are currently selling? And 'ship'? Well, I don't know.

That was just the beginning. He next pulled out a thoroughly debunked, mis-translated quote from a Samsung VP:

Some people only hear what they want to hear, but that quote should have ended with "quite smooth." That translation was officially corrected a long time ago. Here's the recording. Shame on Apple Keynote fact-checkers, if such a role even exists.

That leads us to:

">90% market share". OMG Math.

Both Apple and Samsung measure sales the same way -- into the channel. Apple has just as many points of sale for the iPad as Samsung has for the Tab and likely many more. So Samsung sold 2 million (in the last quarter) in 2010. Apple sold 14.8 million (in three quarters). That seems like a pretty fair comparison.

Apple would have needed to sell 3.2 million more to reach 90% of 2010's tablet market share against just Samsung alone (in triple the time). That's not including all of the Android-powered Nooks out there, those cheap $100 Androids you can buy at Walgreens or Amazon and even Windows-powered Tablet PCs (which are mentioned two bullet points above!). If you choose to include the Kindle, Apple may not have even reached 50% of the market.

Perhaps Jobs meant market share of tablets that start with the letter "I."

And finally, pricing:

As for pricing, Jobs compared the most expensive Android tablet -- the XOOM --against the iPad. While specs don't matter to the typical consumer, components do largely affect the price of a device. The XOOM's are simply better. It has (expandable) 32GB of storage built in and 3G built in (upgradable through a painful mail-in process to 4G). So, on that alone, it compares with the $729 iPad.

But then consider that the XOOM has a much better, bigger 720P+ screen compared to the iPad's 1024x768 job (it has less Retina™). Then, add far superior cameras (w/flash), stereo speakers (iPad 2 has one), 4G and a micro-USB/SD Card reader. Apple won't say how much RAM the iPad has, but I'm willing to bet it is about half of the XOOM's 1GB.

You see, Apple loves to talk about specs when it is in its best interest (speeds and feeds). There are plenty of specs on size and weight that were repeated over and over:"8.8mm thin", "1.3 lbs". Tech Specs? Lots: "Retina display has 326PPI", "1GHz Dual Core Processor", "64GB of storage", "Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating", "Back camera: Video recording, HD (720p) up to 30 frames per second with audio; still camera with 5x digital zoom", etc. etc. But ask them how much RAM the iPad has and they'll tell you it doesn't matter.

Perhaps Jobs could have also compared the iPad 2 to other Android tablets' prices? Samsung's Galaxy Tab and Dell's Streak both now start at $499 and have better cameras, 3G radios and GPS, which seem to compete well with Apple's $499 Wifi-only offering. Reality distorted.

I have a lot of respect for Steve Jobs and Apple's products. It's just a shame that all the truth-bending destroys the keynotes.

Here's the whole video (play distortion bingo with a double shot of Kool-Aid?):

Had he said first dual core it would be a lie but saying 'in volume' could mean first to ship over 10 million (which I'm sure they'll do in the first 3 months).

On the tablet side 90% doesn't sound too off being that only the tab sold successfully last year.

That is what i was trying to say that the article had valid points that were skewed by dudes hatred so he was reaching

In response to Reply # 106

I remember they said they had SHIPPED two million - but I never got the number of what they have sold to consumers.

Apple sold at least 15 million iPads to consumer last year, did all the other tablet makers sell 1.5 million combined?

----
If you want to hear a lot of "Apple are smarmy lairs" bullshit listen to tonight's TWiT episode.

They actually complained that Apple had too many self-congratualory videos during the presentation. Have they ever been to an Apple event before?

I get it - some people just don't like Apple. And a lot of tech journalist don't like Steve Jobs. And Steve certainly hit those folks weak points by shit talking the competition and describing the new case as magical.

Right now the iPad makes sense. Xoom and HP and Samsung aren't there yet. The Xoom might have a shot - but the $599 version needs to ship - and they have to get rid of the carrier lock-in. (And SHIPPING with Flash and MicroSD card slot would have helped.)

unless you define "the market" to be only ereaders. I'm going to assume he isn't talking about that, but some kind of "tablet" or "internet appliance" market. if you take the line that anything that isn't a phone but connects to the internet, runs a recognizable operating system and can run third-party apps is in, then the ipod touch ought to be considered part of whatever that market is. Apple sold something like 30 or 40 million of them last year.

But I also don't see why anyone would pay a seperate bill for tablet 3G or 3.5G service, when you can use the android phones as a mobile hotspot.

I just like the fact that with a tablet that takes a SIM, you have an easier solution when you travel.

I also have a macbook and look at the tablets more like an enhanced smartphone than a lower end computer option.

That's just me though.

I had huge amounts of work to do and decided that wasn't the best time to own something like that. Now I'm good though, and my work actually requires a device like this

This is something else

It's been a fun diversion but I'll try to do some work on it soon.

I really want to try Omnigraffle for it - but there's no "lite" version and it cost $50 dollars.

Thought this iPad may be going back. The lack of 3G is killing me at work where they block all kinds of apps (like DropBox) making it a very frustraing experince to use.

At home it's great - but on the road you're at the mercy of the Wi-Fi operator's settings.

iPad 2 is lighter and the panel is brighter.

the accelerometer is a whole lot faster.

i have no nagging RDF need/want for this.

I need a great painter/autodesk/adobe drawing app for me to jump in.

gotta get my Mac and TV game right first.

Played around with one at the Apple store, it was nice and fast and all that, looked great, felt great. But I don't have an immediate pressing need until I head to Spain in May to make it worth while to run around town trying to hunt one down. In a month's time, supply will be normal (if this light-leek thing is isolated) and I'll cop then.

If they get the supply side figured out before it comes in, whenever that is, I'll buy from another source and just spend the $100 reservation gift card on something else. But if the supply gets even more constrained as other countries are launched and Japan restricts ssd/processor supply, this could get worse.

http://www.gizmocrunch.com/rumors/6116-samsung-galaxy-tab-101-vs-ipad-2

nformationWeek reports that when they manage to get their hands on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 at CTIA, it appeared thicker than the iPad 2. In fact they kept it up against an iPad 2 and took some photos (below) which also clearly show the iPad 2 is thinner.

So what exactly is going on here? We know the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1V model at CTIA was an early prototype as media outlets weren't allow to use go pass the lock screen, so could this prototype be based off the original Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 that was suppose to be unveiled with somewhat beefier dimensions beofre Samsung saw the iPad 2?

really has modified my computing habits. i'm a first time owner so a lot of the original iPad's breakthroughs are still novel to me. BUT.

my girl has the OG iPad and i have used it alot... this one feels a lot faster. you can tell that the A5 processor and ram bump is making a difference.

cameras... not particularly useful. i say if you're gonna add some shit on make it worth while. i like how light it is but the contoured redesign isnt as comfortable or reassuring to hold on to.

the iPad's revolution is still new enough that we can be impressed by a moderately improved version.

but its a great machine, just not much different.

I've had it since Monday and it's just a different way to consume information. At first, the lady said "congrats, you have three things that do the same thing now (macbook, iphone, ipad)" but even she's come around to how different it is. And the mobility is great; so much easier to grab and go and use while out of the house than the mb has been.
I'm still slowly working my way through the Aps to see what works best for me. Read it Later is great; I don't understand why iBooks wasn't preloaded, but that makes downloading and saving PDFs make so much more sense than using AirShare. Dissapointed Home Sharing doesn't include a photo option, but it's still a cool feature.

Both cameras only are useful for Face Time. I've never been that big of a user, but assuming you are on a network, the back camera is good for showing someone what you are looking at while in a chat. Just need more people that actually use it or a wider available version of the software.

This weekend will be my first to try and use it the entire weekend for all consumption. And I need to go get the camera kit.
