Sony's worst-kept secret, the upcoming release of Killzone 3, has apparently been blown wide open in the latest issue of GamePro. 3D effects, deeper melee combat and JETPACKS are all said to be part of the shenanigans this time around.

The jetpacks are a huge part of Killzone 3, according to the reports. They can be used as weapons by both the player and the Helghast, with the enemies apparently blowing up like "Roman candles" if shot. There will also be environmental obstacles that require use of the pack. There's also meant to be a new weapon called The Wasp, which fires multiple missiles in one shot.

As far as the story and setting goes, arctic levels have been revealed, and the Helghast are expected to shot some vestiges of humanity to their character. Hopefully they will get a little more depth to their character, as they always had potential to be fascinating villains. A little bit of art has been revealed, showing the Helghast dressed for winter combat. Still with the impractical orange eyes, of course.

Which leaves us with the matter of 3D. Allegedly, 3D effects are "crazy" and make up a big part of the game, although there is still major doubt that videogames featuring current-gen graphics can support the technology. Guess we'll have to see what they're done here.

Well, color me excited. Killzone 2 is one of my favorite shooters, and thus I shall be all over this. We can certainly expect more at E3.

These days it is very difficult to keep a secret for long. Also the fact that some titles have natural consequences, and the Killzone series is no exception.

After rumors, we finally come the first pictures and information about the much desired, for the fans, Killzone 3.

The information and images originate in GamePro magazine, where stands the full support of 3D, the presence of snow, and a surprise, the direct collaboration of fantastic Naughty Dog (Uncharted 2) tools in the graphics engine.

According to the magazine, the game is bigger than Killzone 2, also we knew that there will be jetpacks, good style of Halo: Reach, equipped with a machine gun on top. Another novelty is the inclusion of ice levels, where the presence of snow is a constant.

Regarding the gameplay, we have a surprise, which is that we fight hand-to-body the proper style of Uncharted, but much more violent. For now we also know that there will be a new weapon, the Wasp, which fires several missiles at once.

After this initial information, we can only wait anxiously for E3, which promises to be a blast.

It's a pretty long write up so I just skimmed.

Heres the portion about 3D:

It's nearing the end of our session, but one trick remains hidden up the collective sleeves of our hosts. It's only available at one demo pod, front and centre of the room, where we're seated in front of a very expensive looking, prototype 3D TV.

It's perhaps not a huge surprise. PS3D has been common knowledge for some time now, and it makes perfect sense that one of the platform's flagship series be earmarked for the technology's release. What is a surprise is how well it all actually works.


Just try and imagine it in 3D. Squint a bit or something.
I manage to plumb the centre seat, which apparently gives the best impressions of the 3D magic at work, but the appreciative noises emanating from the journos either side of me are reassuring. We play through the same section again, although the pad remains firmly in the hands of the studio representative.

Straight away there's an immediate impact. The weighty, long-barrelled minigun has a real presence in-screen, highlighting the fact that the majority of Killzone's 3D trickery is done via the impression of depth rather than projection. Shuffling behind cover emphasises the effect superbly, each vanishing line and focal reference point making the illusion ever more real.

The game's particle effects really come into their own under the influence of the active shutter glasses too. Snow seems to swirl very distinctly in front of the screen, its fluttering hypnotism starkly punctuated by the bullets which zip and zing towards you. We're told there's a lot of work to be done on the perfection of the 3D yet, and in certain effects that's obvious, but generally the whole effect is a mesmerising one, drawing you into the screen and surrounding you with it, generally just in time to recoil from a projectile or ten. It also adds a competitive advantage, allowing players to judge the jetpack jumps with much greater accuracy. How that will skew the playing field between 3D enabled multiplayer users and their dimension-poorer counterparts remains to be seen.

In one of the more static moments, our demonstrator places a D-charge on the AA battery, the focus and lack of movement allowing a more advanced 3D technique to be used. It's startling how much depth is added to the scene. This is a fairly strenuous technique in terms of brain capacity, though, and we're informed that it's something which won't be happening too often. "If we were to do this during a combat scenario, your eyes would tire, your brain would malfunction. This is a game we want people to be able to play for hours at a time."

Judging by what's been shown so far, I can't see that being a problem.

Did you find the endless swarms of Helghast a bit too hot to handle in Killzone 2? Maybe backup from three friends will help you out! It has been confirmed that a special four-player co-op mode is coming to Killzone 3.

The only thing we know about the four-player section is that it will be "objective based," meaning that it's unlikely to be a horde mode or anything comparable. Still, it's quite interesting to see, and seems to indicate that Guerrilla is really doing all it can to make Killzone 3 much bigger than the last game.

I look forward to seeing what this co-op mode is all about in any case!

I rented KZ2, ...granted it had some intense gunfights, I ain't really
freak wit it too tough,....didn't even beat it. But 4-player co-op will def make me check for KZ3.

In terms of infantry 4-player co-op, Socom Combined Assault(PS2) is the iLLest I've played thus far, the entire fuckin campaign available in co-op. Shit was ridic. I'm lookin' forward to this if they have a similar execution of it.

One of the most characteristic qualities of Killzone 2 was its control scheme, which underscored the weighty feel of the game's first-person animations. It was also Killzone 2's most divisive quality: some players loved the sense of realism it provided, while others believed it impacted the responsiveness too much.


For Killzone 3, Guerrilla's developers are aiming to keep the unique sense of weight in the game while ramping up the accuracy and responsiveness of the controls. We talked to Game Director Mathijs de Jonge to get a better idea of the considerations involved with the redesign.

"Our first priority when we started working on the controls for Killzone 3 was to listen closely to Killzone 2's players - what they liked, what they disliked, and how they felt things could be improved," Mathijs says. "Accuracy and responsiveness consistently came up as the top issues. At the same time, a lot of players were saying they loved the weighty feel."

That might sound contradictory, but one doesn't have to preclude the other. "For the most part, the unique sense of weight in Killzone 2 comes directly from the first-person animations, not from the control scheme," Mathijs explains. "The speed of movement and the way the camera bobs up and down are consistent with the view of a person carrying around heavy equipment."




When the team went back to the drawing board, they began by exhaustively analyzing every aspect of the underlying system, taking into consideration factors like input lag, acceleration and dead zone and how each affected the overall gameplay. Their findings were used to make improvements to the accuracy and responsiveness of the controls.

The results so far have been very encouraging. "Right now it's still a work in progress," Mathijs says, "but we're definitely getting there. We’ve recalibrated the dead zone to be more responsive and significantly reduced the input lag, resulting in far better accuracy. Best of all, we've managed to retain that sense of weight that set Killzone 2 apart from other shooters. I can't wait for people to try it out.

It actually felt like you were some soldier carrying around a big heavy gun and shooting people.

I don't know if it was because it was so hyped up or whatever...but the game sucked. Campaign was boring, multiplayer was terrible, controls were clunky. In the most over-saturated genre of games in recent years (also my favorite genre), I can't fathom why anyone would waste their time/money on the sequel- besides that it's a PS3 exclusive. There's infinitely better options. But to each their own I guess. Enjoy.

Eh... To each their own. I think KZ2 is a solid shooter with a strong MP if you actually play it. The controls are a tad heavy but I like might shooters to move like Source engine games, MW2 speed is too crackheady. Borderlands controls (save vehicles) is just right IMHO.

I'm going to rent Haze this weekend for a laugh.

I haven't actually played any of the games listed above, so I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't too fantastic. Seems like there's a split of opinion on Brutal Legend, and that was the only one that I even considered buying, but if I remember a bunch of good games came out around that time, so I just never ended up picking that one up.

I just could not get into the MP. Whenever I played with friends, it was a bitch to get onto their teams, and from there on out it just seemed like a mess whenever I ran the 4 miles it took to get back into the action. The covering mechanic was shitty and the controls just didn't seem accurate. I don't know, it's probably just because I am conditioned on playing the more accurate shooting FPS games, so I guess that's just my preference. This was really one of the first FPS's I played in a long time where I couldn't stand controlling the guy. Firing the gatling gun thing in SP was bad-ass though.

I think another thing that led to such disappointment was how well reviewed the game was before it came out, so when I finally got to playing it I was a bit let down. But like you said, it could simply just be a matter of opinion. I couln't get into the controls, and to me that's probably the most important aspect of FPS. Just saying.
