"BottledUnicornTears aka that iPad Post Part 2"
Thu Mar-25-10 09:15 AM by jetblack

It's dropping soon and that other post is get too iPhone/iPod touch unfriendly. AND yes I'll be at my local Apple store on launch day, might even pick one up...maybe.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/29/apple-ipad-the-definitive-guide-so-far/

CBS doing that HTML5 stuff...in the open!

http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/25/cbs-testing-html5-ipad-video-out-in-the-open/
Hey Dan, ever heard of a staging area to do your testing? Apparently not judging by the screenshot above. MacRumors took that "iPad - test - dan config - 3" content from the CBS.com homepage for a spin and discovered what appears to be HTML5 (not Flash) video. A bit more sleuthing reveals several "webkit" (the foundation of the iPad's and iPhone's mobile Safari browser) calls after peeling open the CSS. This suggests that CBS is preparing to serve up parallel HTML5 content with the launch of the notoriously Flash-less iPad -- take that Hulu -- becoming yet another high-profile company swayed into providing video and other content in an Apple friendly format. Then again, maybe CBS is just testing a "what if" scenario with no intention of moving this into production any time soon. US netizens can try it themselves by setting your browser to spoof the iPad's user agent and hitting the source below (for as long as it lasts) but you'll need the iPad SDK Simulator to view the actual HTML5 videos.

If you ever visit a site like digg on an iphone it's totally different from a desktop browser. It's optimized for small touchscreens. Now we've got this new device which is touch based but is too large for a mobile optimized site. Neither existing versions are appropriate without css hackery.

Don't we rally against IE for requiring such hacks?

css is look and feel, xslt can deliver correctly. Plus this is less about IE vs other browsers but more different delivery methods all together i.e. browser, cell phone, iphone, ipad.

the content can all stay the same, but just use different style sheets depending on end point.

Fire up your desktop browser and visit http://m.digg.com/ It looks like shit but works great on small touch screens. Would you want to use that on a tablet? Now visit the regular http://digg.com. Looks awesome but those menu items at the top are gonna be hell on a touch screen.

Both sites server their target devices well but work poorly on the ipad. Now some poor web developer at digg is gonna have to come up with yet another design. What a mess.

They claim that it's "The best way to see the web":

Yet by now it's clear that it's at best a mediocre way to view the web. They should bill it as "The best way to see the web of pages that were specifically designed for this device; all 20 of them."

They tried the same marketing trick back in 2007. They claimed that is was the first phone to let the user see "The Real Web". We all know how that turned out. iPhone optimized sites and a fragmented web.

They need to meet Adobe half-wa..LOL...yeah right. The fragmentation will continue, you'll see a variation on the thing you saw in the early days of futuresplash/flash, html or flash version; instead you'll have desktop version, mobile/iPhone version and now an iPad version, all detected on the fly via a javascript object. That RDF is powerful right now. More powerful than ever before and its looking more divisive when it comes to the web.

I'm not saying it's right. (I'm on your side with this whole discussion)

I will say this about the whole "app" for the iPad thing... I can understand why print publications will want an independent application for the iPad but-- regular websites? I thought we were supposed to be moving toward consolidating applications onto the web?

A device that is designed to browse the web should adhere to it's standards. The fact that the web at large must change in order to be properly viewed on it is a testament to its technical failings.

so all you're serving is content and then endpoint is all that matters.

You have to admit it's fairly ridiculous to expect several different mediums to look/work the same.

Besides, mobile digg isn't meant to work on smart phones. it's designed for crappy ass ancient barely able to surf the web phones.

Would it make more sense to design websites around the types of input instead of the types of devices?

Like traditional input vs touch instead of mobile vs tablet vs desktop? I'm just saying this because eventually mobile devices will be as capable as dedicated computers. The real differences come about from input methods and screen sizes, right?

I'm just asking ... I don't do much web programming (obviously).

I don't do web programming either but it seems to me that designers create the site once for their target browser, then just add a bunch of hacks to make secondary browsers work. After they're done with this, they add a group of hacks to deal with mobile browsers. My theory is that this is only going to get worse with the ipad.

For example, check out hbo.com. I'm seeing 4 different versions of this site:
1. Normal Flash based
2. The mobile version
3. The HBO iTunes app
4. The static HTML version

My church just redesigned their website, and it's ALL FLASH. So I'm sitting here thinking about getting an iPhone/iPod touch/iPad, and looking at this new church site like, "Thanks, motherfuckers. Great to know I can't access the site on this new technology that ALL OF THE LEADERSHIP HAVE IN THEIR POCKETS."

I really like the idea of the iPad the more I think about it. I've got reservations built around many things that will only resolve in time. Also, I've got a standard rule that jumping on first generation of new shit like this is JUST RETARDED, so I'm waiting for second gen, at the earliest. But I'm interested enough to start saving up.

But my savings will be towards the next one, that works better, that will drop in a year at the same price as THIS one, with more features and better functionality.

It's a 10 inch screen, with intuitive scrolling/sldieshows/etc that is responsive.

The touch screen, the way you can hold the device, and the responsiveness is what makes this the most impressive photo app I've seen.

It's way overpriced as a photo frame - but I've looked at a bunch of photo frames and they really really suck.

When those Android touch screen tablets launch they might give it some competition, but we won't see those launch for another few months.

(I guess some people have to have "snark on" all the time.)

It does indeed suck that this is the first photo frame that I've seen demoed that seems responsive at all. All the others seemed to focus on the "slideshow" aspect - not browsing the photos.

The $280 Vizit (http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/25/isabellas-vizit-touchscreen-cell-connected-photo-frame-goes-ha/) was described as "sluggish" in the Engadet review.

Find me a responsive touch screen photo frame for under $500 - I'm IN THE MARKET for one.

If they put all the required text books on the book store, that’d be a pretty good thing. It’d save students space in their bags, save them money from printing out all those books and save trees.

(of course there are some glaring reasons why an iPad isn't the best choice tho.
maybe they'll also give each student one of these:

I just didn't think any school would be silly enough to actually choose
the iPad for its slate experiment

In response to Reply # 55

Example: international finance text book I was needing, physical cost is $140, used $110, etextbook (which "expires" in 6 months: $85.

So the iPad is going to just take that nice little buy-back change out of people's pockets.

In response to Reply # 60

http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/09/adobe-distances-itself-from-joojoo-cites-lack-of-direct-relati/

Well, this is just a huge surprise. In response to our not entirely glowing review of the JooJoo, Adobe's PR team has gotten in touch to inform us that Fusion Garage "has no direct relationship with Adobe." Citing the young startup's non-participation in the Open Screen Project and use of "a public beta release designed only for desktop use," Adobe is drawing a thick line between itself and the JooJoo, and urges us to instead look at the alternatives from its partners like HP, Dell and Lenovo. Mind you, not one of those companies is (as yet) selling a competing tablet, and it's not like there's some magical formula that will make 720p Flash video run smoothly on a bare Atom CPU (remember, Ion GPU acceleration is not yet available for the Linux-based JooJoo), but who are we to stand in the way of a carefully worded damage limitation statement? Click past the break for the entire thing.
JooJoo has no direct relationship with Adobe and has not worked with us as other manufacturers have to ensure a great Flash experience. By attempting to use a public beta release designed only for desktop use, we're not surprised by the lackluster performance and disappointing browsing experience.

Silicon and device platforms from companies who have worked with Adobe as part of the Open Screen Project are setting the bar for a great Flash experience on this exciting device category and we encourage you to check out devices from Dell, HP, Lenovo and other partners.

'Speaking of video: Apple asserts that the iPad runs 10 hours on a charge of its nonremovable battery — but we all know you can’t trust the manufacturer. And sure enough, in my own test, the iPad played movies continuously from 7:30 a.m. to 7:53 p.m. — more than 12 hours. That’s four times as long as a typical laptop or portable DVD player.'

"Clearly, the GPU acceleration on Windows makes a huge difference and
means Flash is more efficient than HTML5 most of the time. The Mac,
however, does not expose the necessary APIs for Adobe to do GPU
acceleration. Adobe has said the "the ball is in Apple's court". So
Apple does not allow Flash to run efficiently on OSX by denying the
plug-in access to the graphics hardware? Given these Windows test
results, we think that’s kind of unacceptable . Where do you come
down in the streaming standards battle?"

Is that a backlit e-reader goes hard on your eyes. That's why the Kindle, though it lacks 98% of the bells and whistles of the iPad, will still be better for reading books.

People that are geeking on iPad aren't doing it for the same reason that people like Kindle.

I love Kindle. I bet I'd love iPad. I'd own both, because they serve different purposes, in my opinion.

I would not read books on an iPad, though.

Why I won't buy an iPad (and think you shouldn't, either)

Cory Doctorow at 5:23 AM April 2, 2010

I've spent ten years now on Boing Boing, finding cool things that people have done and made and writing about them. Most of the really exciting stuff hasn't come from big corporations with enormous budgets, it's come from experimentalist amateurs. These people were able to make stuff and put it in the public's eye and even sell it without having to submit to the whims of a single company that had declared itself gatekeeper for your phone and other personal technology.

Danny O'Brien does a very good job of explaining why I'm completely uninterested in buying an iPad -- it really feels like the second coming of the CD-ROM "revolution" in which "content" people proclaimed that they were going to remake media by producing expensive (to make and to buy) products. I was a CD-ROM programmer at the start of my tech career, and I felt that excitement, too, and lived through it to see how wrong I was, how open platforms and experimental amateurs would eventually beat out the spendy, slick pros.

I remember the early days of the web -- and the last days of CD ROM -- when there was this mainstream consensus that the web and PCs were too durned geeky and difficult and unpredictable for "my mom" (it's amazing how many tech people have an incredibly low opinion of their mothers). If I had a share of AOL for every time someone told me that the web would die because AOL was so easy and the web was full of garbage, I'd have a lot of AOL shares.

And they wouldn't be worth much.

Incumbents made bad revolutionaries
Relying on incumbents to produce your revolutions is not a good strategy. They're apt to take all the stuff that makes their products great and try to use technology to charge you extra for it, or prohibit it altogether.

I mean, look at that Marvel app (just look at it). I was a comic-book kid, and I'm a comic-book grownup, and the thing that made comics for me was sharing them. If there was ever a medium that relied on kids swapping their purchases around to build an audience, it was comics. And the used market for comics! It was -- and is -- huge, and vital. I can't even count how many times I've gone spelunking in the used comic-bins at a great and musty store to find back issues that I'd missed, or sample new titles on the cheap. (It's part of a multigenerational tradition in my family -- my mom's father used to take her and her sibs down to Dragon Lady Comics on Queen Street in Toronto every weekend to swap their old comics for credit and get new ones).

So what does Marvel do to "enhance" its comics? They take away the right to give, sell or loan your comics. What an improvement. Way to take the joyous, marvellous sharing and bonding experience of comic reading and turn it into a passive, lonely undertaking that isolates, rather than unites. Nice one, Misney.

Infantalizing hardware
Then there's the device itself: clearly there's a lot of thoughtfulness and smarts that went into the design. But there's also a palpable contempt for the owner. I believe -- really believe -- in the stirring words of the Maker Manifesto: if you can't open it, you don't own it. Screws not glue. The original Apple ]<+.[br />
But with the iPad, it seems like Apple's model customer is that same stupid stereotype of a technophobic, timid, scatterbrained mother as appears in a billion renditions of "that's too complicated for my mom" (listen to the pundits extol the virtues of the iPad and time how long it takes for them to explain that here, finally, is something that isn't too complicated for their poor old mothers).

The model of interaction with the iPad is to be a "consumer," what William Gibson memorably described as "something the size of a baby hippo, the color of a week-old boiled potato, that lives by itself, in the dark, in a double-wide on the outskirts of Topeka. It's covered with eyes and it sweats constantly. The sweat runs into those eyes and makes them sting. It has no mouth... no genitals, and can only express its mute extremes of murderous rage and infantile desire by changing the channels on a universal remote."

The way you improve your iPad isn't to figure out how it works and making it better. The way you improve the iPad is to buy iApps. Buying an iPad for your kids isn't a means of jump-starting the realization that the world is yours to take apart and reassemble; it's a way of telling your offspring that even changing the batteries is something you have to leave to the professionals.

Dale Dougherty's piece on Hypercard and its influence on a generation of young hackers is a must-read on this. I got my start as a Hypercard programmer, and it was Hypercard's gentle and intuitive introduction to the idea of remaking the world that made me consider a career in computers.

Wal-Martization of the software channel
And let's look at the iStore. For a company whose CEO professes a hatred of DRM, Apple sure has made DRM its alpha and omega. Having gotten into business with the two industries that most believe that you shouldn't be able to modify your hardware, load your own software on it, write software for it, override instructions given to it by the mothership (the entertainment industry and the phone companies), Apple has defined its business around these principles. It uses DRM to control what can run on your devices, which means that Apple's customers can't take their "iContent" with them to competing devices, and Apple developers can't sell on their own terms.

The iStore lock-in doesn't make life better for Apple's customers or Apple's developers. As an adult, I want to be able to choose whose stuff I buy and whom I trust to evaluate that stuff. I don't want my universe of apps constrained to the stuff that the Cupertino Politburo decides to allow for its platform. And as a copyright holder and creator, I don't want a single, Wal-Mart-like channel that controls access to my audience and dictates what is and is not acceptable material for me to create. The last time I posted about this, we got a string of apologies for Apple's abusive contractual terms for developers, but the best one was, "Did you think that access to a platform where you can make a fortune would come without strings attached?" I read it in Don Corleone's voice and it sounded just right. Of course I believe in a market where competition can take place without bending my knee to a company that has erected a drawbridge between me and my customers!

Journalism is looking for a daddy figure
I think that the press has been all over the iPad because Apple puts on a good show, and because everyone in journalism-land is looking for a daddy figure who'll promise them that their audience will go back to paying for their stuff. The reason people have stopped paying for a lot of "content" isn't just that they can get it for free, though: it's that they can get lots of competing stuff for free, too. The open platform has allowed for an explosion of new material, some of it rough-hewn, some of it slick as the pros, most of it targetted more narrowly than the old media ever managed. Rupert Murdoch can rattle his saber all he likes about taking his content out of Google, but I say do it, Rupert. We'll miss your fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the Web so little that we'll hardly notice it, and we'll have no trouble finding material to fill the void.

Just like the gadget press is full of devices that gadget bloggers need (and that no one else cares about), the mainstream press is full of stories that affirm the internal media consensus. Yesterday's empires do something sacred and vital and most of all grown up, and that other adults will eventually come along to move us all away from the kids' playground that is the wild web, with its amateur content and lack of proprietary channels where exclusive deals can be made. We'll move back into the walled gardens that best return shareholder value to the investors who haven't updated their portfolios since before eTrade came online.

But the real economics of iPad publishing tell a different story: even a stellar iPad sales performance isn't going to do much to staunch the bleeding from traditional publishing. Wishful thinking and a nostalgia for the good old days of lockdown won't bring customers back through the door.

Gadgets come and gadgets go
Gadgets come and gadgets go. The iPad you buy today will be e-waste in a year or two (less, if you decide not to pay to have the battery changed for you). The real issue isn't the capabilities of the piece of plastic you unwrap today, but the technical and social infrastructure that accompanies it.

If you want to live in the creative universe where anyone with a cool idea can make it and give it to you to run on your hardware, the iPad isn't for you.

If you want to live in the fair world where you get to keep (or give away) the stuff you buy, the iPad isn't for you.

If you want to write code for a platform where the only thing that determines whether you're going to succeed with it is whether your audience loves it, the iPad isn't for you.

Love,
Nopayne

http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/03/apple-ipad-review/

I won't even get into the whole timing of who got units when and who didn't thing, but whatever you've read is probably true.

a lot of people are probably going to think it's super negative or super positive but i don't think it's really either.

"The Apple iPad. The name is a killing word -- more than a product -- it's a statement, an idea, and potentially a prime mover in the world of consumer electronics. Before iPad it was called the Apple Tablet, the Slate, Canvas, and a handful of other guesses -- but what was little more than rumor and speculation for nearly ten years is now very much a reality. Announced on January 27th to a middling response, Apple has been readying itself for what could be the most significant product launch in its history; the making (or breaking) of an entirely new class of computer for the company. The iPad is something in between its monumental iPhone and wildly successful MacBook line -- an usurper to the netbook throne, and possibly a sign of things to come for the entire personal computer market... if Apple delivers on its promises. And those are some big promises; the company has been tossing around words like "magical" and "revolutionary" to describe what many have dismissed as nothing more than a larger version of its iPod touch. But is that all there is to this device? Is the hope that Apple promises for this new computing experience nothing more than marketing fluff and strategic hyperbole? Or is this a different beast altogether -- a true sign that change has come to the world of the PC? We have the definitive answers to those questions (and many more) right here, so read on for our full review of the Apple iPad!"

when the word "futuristic" was used in the video to refer to the
NY Times app it made me wonder when / if print media will make rich(er)
apps for windows and mac computers. maybe, the openness of a "full"
operating system and the greater likelihood of piracy discourages them
from doing more. I dunno, but the NY Times' Adobe Air experience
seems quite weak in comparison

They like it for its purpose but the issues they had with it are big issues. Really the biggest issue I saw in the review was the way it handles "files". That was the killer for me. I mean the "multitasking" issues are bad enough for what SHOULD be able to compete with netbooks/low-end laptops (citing price). With a gimped browser experience (citing no flash. probably ever.) and all of these other issues it makes it very difficult for me to drop $500 on it. They'd have to lower the price for me to bite. Then add all of this on top of Apple's closed software? No, thank you.

This is all my personal opinion, though. I can see why people would pay for it based on the portability alone. I get the feeling many people will be disappointed by the browser experience. If I were into Ebooks, however, I'd grab this for the potential comics alone. That Marvel application looks nice!

I'll bide my time until a challenger shows up that addresses the IPad's shortcomings (probably android) or offers a revolutionary experience (probably courier).

pointed out what they loved and what they hated, fairly objectively.

I noticed 3 big issues: lack of usb port, lack of flash, lack of multi-tasking.

the lack of multi-tasking (and document sharing) i believe will be temporary and updated with future software upgrades (i.e iPhone OS 4.0 already rumored to have multi-tasking).

lack of usb port (and camera) - probably v2.0 hardware.

lack of flash support - i think thats the biggest issue and one that really takes away from the web browser. and unlike the other two issues, its unknown if this will ever be addressed.

Started using it for my midterm paper the second I got it out the box.

Battery life is impressive: I've been using it for writing, reading and reviewing clips since 6 and it's at 78% battery life.

Despite all the horseshit about pixel doubling most of the iPhone apps are terrible on this thing. I kept Dropbox and Quickoffice because they're indispensable, but dumped the rest. Evernote is fucking great on this thing. Media is very good. Fullsized cover art on this thing is just fucking dumb, and SD footage really shows it's ass, but HD looks nice and sharp. Web browsing is really good, despite lack of Flash.

I have no complaints yet. Kindle > iBooks, by the way. I haven't had the same experience as rjcc's guy regarding outdoor use. When I was out in the park with my son, reading web pages and books were fine. Admittedly, I didn't watch video, but I didn't experience terrible glare.

Virtual keyboard isntt terrible at all, but beyond this post, I wouldn't go typing your next opus on it. I used a Bluetooth keyboard (Apple) which worked without being too much of a pain. Very few typos

I can honestly say the app sets I use on my iPhone are almost completely different than the ones I use on the iPad. Totally different creature. I will say that after using the iPad for news consumption, the iPhone feels very cramped, and that after using TweetDeck at full screen, Tweetie 2 feels kind of limited. But, aside from strategy and board games (Scrabble and Civ)' the iPhone is a far better more natural-feeling game platform. The size makes it more like a handheld gamer: 9.7" isn,t really comfortable for Street Fighter or NOVA.

Pages is pretty good, by the way. Not great, but good. SketchPro is fucking AWESOME. I may cop one of the those stylii specifically to get the full drawing experience.

I was on the fence as well...but then I picked it up on display at the Apple store and spent an hour with it. I couldn't leave the store...I immediately preordered a 3G version.

what is Jobs'.

http://www.dailytech.com/IPad+Users+Get+One+Free+Major+OS+Upgrade+and+Then+Will+Have+to+Pay/article18011.htm

"Apple will provide you any iPad OS software updates that it may release from time to time, up to and including the next major iPad OS software release following the version of iPad OS software that originally shipped from Apple on your iPad, for free. For example, if your iPad originally shipped with iPad 3.x software, Apple would provide you with any iPad OS software updates it might release up to and including the iPad 4.x software release. Such updates and releases may not necessarily include all of the new software features that Apple releases for newer iPad models. "

1st gen people can always sell before the next gen comes out and buy it at it's lower cost without a new investment. The general public takes a gen or two to catch on and it's kinda waste to understand these things and not exploit them.

In response to Reply # 0

Not sure if it was the setting or what, but I wasn't that impressed. Used a few apps, it was okay, a few games...eh...surfing didn't seem much faster than iPhone on a decent connection. Best Buy faux Apple Genius said they were on a 2.4 cable over g. Of course, you can't bench test it with conventional browser based apps because those are all built on Flash.

Upscaled iPhone games are not good. iBooks was nice. Physical feel of it was bulky and the keyboard wasn't as responsive as I'd like (it doesn't like double taps like "foot" or "RJCC SUCKS COCKS"). The aps they had loaded on it, and there were a ton, were just sort of okay...nothing earth shattering. The speed issue is hard to look past for me, who is a very web-oriented user, so I can't get behind this sucker until that gets a serious look.

Why the iPad isn't for me
Posted on Apr 9, 2010 10:00 am by Ben Long, Macworld.com

Macworld Senior Contributor Ben Long is thinking different. Unfortunately, it's not the kind of different Apple had in mind when it started selling the iPad last week. After one day with the device, Ben realized that his conclusions might put him at odds with the majority of Apple fans and giddy new iPad owners. He wisely went into hiding, taking the iPad with him and hoping for a revelation. Here are his reports from :

Using the iPad, day two
Ah, those early hours with the iPad. It was a simpler time. The novelty of poking a big screen, and of ferreting out all of the clever new animations that Apple has come up with for things like re-filing an e-mail. The buzz of seeing familiar applications retooled and redesigned for more space. The discovery of entirely new (to me) apps like NYTimes Crosswords.

Download an audio file of Ben Long doing a dramatic reading of this article (MP4, 10 MB).

Things started out so well. Brought the iPad home from the store. Removed it from the expected, beautiful packaging. Confirmed that it was made in the country of California.

Yes, I miss yesterday. It was an innocent day spent playing with a new toy. What the ancient Romans referred to as "circumpedi."

I'm writing this from an undisclosed location. As the only person in the Northern Hemisphere who doesn't like the iPad, I fear for my safety. Macworld has been unable to guarantee my continued well-being, and so I have retreated to what I hope will remain a secret locale. My supplies are limited, the lodging austere. It's just me, my iPad, and an actual usable device, my trusty 13-inch MacBook.

I only hope that my supplies last long enough so I can sneak out under cover of HP's Slate launch.

Day three
This morning I decided to try, once again, to use the iPad for something practical. I figured that maybe things would go better this time, but alas, my frustration only grew.

I needed to research a product and order something, a process that would require comparing listings on several different Web pages with some suggestions that a friend had e-mailed to me. Happily, I sat down with the iPad in my lap and managed to type the URL correctly on only the third try. As always, the page loaded quickly and looked great, for a smallish screen. Oh wait, I forgot, we don't compare the iPad screen to something reasonable like a 13-inch MacBook screen, we only compare it to the iPhone. Sure enough, it's enormous.

Soon, though, the thrill of the Imax-like-by-comparison-to-the-iPhone screen was tempered by the hassle of trying to compare items on multiple Web pages. In addition to not being able to place pages side by side, switching between pages involves multiple taps, separated by a scan of a bunch of tiny thumbnails. Giving up on this approach, I took to transferring prices from different pages onto a piece of paper, using a pencil. This made comparisons much simpler, but I shudder to think what would happen if I were seen doing this in public.

Comparing Web pages to e-mail was even more disconcerting as I had to leave Safari entirely, click on Mail, and then go back to the Home page and relaunch Safari. In addition to being frustrating, this approach is somewhat perplexing because other iPad apps have the ability to open a Web page in a pop-up sheet. Surely Apple knows about this part of the iPad API. . . .

Obviously, multitasking is more important than I realized.

Pencils are running low. I fear for my continued productivity.

But perhaps I've thrown too complex a browsing task at this device. After all, it's merely supposed to be the greatest Web browsing experience ever. What happens if I just stick to a single page?

I spend some time reading a forum discussion. Sure enough, there is something interesting about holding the device and feeling the Web in my hands as if it were a ream of paper.

But even this is a lot of work. A lot more work than merely pressing the spacebar every time I want to advance by a screenful. Instead, I have to swipe, and hope that the screen scrolls far enough, but not too far. And instead of merely tapping on a link, I often have to pinch the screen to get the link big enough to hit, tap it, and then tap the screen again to get it back to the right size. Interacting with the screen is fun at first, but is this really more efficient?

Have noticed that, when it comes to making phone calls, the iPad works every bit as well as the iPhone.

Day four
Steve taught us long ago that typing on the iPhone required practice, and he spoke the truth. After three or four days, I was typing very quickly and accurately on the iPhone. I was surprised to find that it was much easier than typing on my Treo keyboard.

Deciding the iPad might be the same way, I launched Notes app and gave serious typing another try. The iPad has taught me much about my typing habits. For instance, I never realized that I routinely rest fingers on keys that I'm not actually pressing, and I never knew how often my fingers brush keys on the way to the key that I want to press. On the iPad, these habits result in an astonishing number of extra characters appearing. Deciding to employ my iPhone habits of typing, and correcting later, I barrel ahead. But editing is as tedious on the iPad as it is on the iPhone. Instead of including virtual cursor keys, Apple decided to keep the tap-wait-move-little-tiny-handles-around approach to editing.

I have a list of things that I would one day like to learn. I'm fairly certain that relearning to type is not on the list. I thought about moving the list to the iPad to look it over, but figuring out how to transfer the document was too complicated.

Neck is hurting. Hands are achy, and am feeling the beginnings of eye strain. At first, I assume that it's the stress of my exile and isolation, but then I opened the MacBook (as I needed to do some actual typing) and realized what a better position it is than the iPad. With the iPad on my lap, I have to crane my neck to look down—the laptop screen sits more in front, and at a far more comfortable angle.

So I try to hold the iPad upright to read it, but this quickly pains my hand. Granted, I'm someone with bad RSIs, so these posture concerns probably won't plague most people. Especially the elderly that are allegedly a prime market for this device.

Of course, I could get a case that would allow the iPad to stand upright, and a keyboard that would give me a worthwhile typing experience. In fact, I probably wouldn't even have to spend that much money to get it back up to the level of functionality and weight of a netbook. But of course, why not just carry a netbook? My Apple-fueled conditioning reminds me that I should think of the iPad as a modular netbook. I would only connect the keyboard when I needed to type. This would be great for airplanes! Without a keyboard, it'll fit on a tray table, but in my room I'll have a real keyboard!

Of course, hotel room tables and desks are always too high for me to type comfortably, and there's no way to use the iPad with a keyboard in my lap, so I'm back to RSI risk.

Food supplies are running low. I wish now that I'd bought the leather iPad case, for the neoprene one is definitely inedible.

Day five
I'm approaching this all wrong. This is a media consumption device. I'm trying too hard to create things on it, I should go consume.

Earlier today, an e-mail arrived containing links to some work-related videos. I sat at the MacBook, ready to watch, and then remembered that sitting upright is so 2005, and that with my iPad I can now lie on the couch and watch video, just as if I had a TV in the room. Fortunately, there's no TV in my current location, so I don't have to wonder why I would watch a tiny iPad screen instead of a TV.

Sure enough, the couch was very comfortable, and the iPad was easy enough to hold. Fortunately, none of the videos were Flash-based, so I was able to launch the first one with no problem.

I found it curious that the filmmakers had chosen to superimpose a nose over every scene, but decided that it must have some symbolic purpose that I didn't understand. Granted, one doesn't think of training videos as having great symbolism, but these are complex times we live in.

The movie continued, and I was surprised at the quality of the iPad's audio. The couch was still comfortable, my hands were still okay. And that nose was still in the video. Suddenly, I couldn't take my eyes off it. It was incredibly well-rendered. What's more, it looked familiar. After a moment, I realized it was my nose reflected so perfectly in the overly glossy screen that I could easily see that I was overdue for some quality time with a trimmer. I tried tilting the iPad to get rid of the nose but found only cheekbones, couch patterns, distant windows, fireplace mantelpieces. After a minute or so I realized that I had not been paying attention to the video, so distracted was I by the terrible reflection.

Returning to the MacBook, I finished watching in the unhip comfort of a regular chair.

But still, the promise of a small video player is incredibly compelling. Just think about it on an airplane. I could load it up with movies and watch for an entire flight, thanks to the iPad's excellent battery life. Of course, because of the lousy keyboard I can't use it in place of a laptop, so I would have to carry the iPad and my MacBook. How is it that, for years, I've pined for a lighter laptop, and now I'm considering carrying an extra pound-and-a-half just to watch videos on an airplane? An airplane that probably has a TV set built-in to the seat.

Have decided to grow the hell up and learn to just sit quietly like people used to have to do when flying.

Day six
I was hopeful that some reading would take my mind off my current travails. As a Kindle user for the last year, I am already accustomed to the differences between book and e-book reading, and have greatly appreciated the ergonomic advantages of the Kindle 2 over a physical book. I can hold it with one hand for extended periods. I can lie on my side and read for a long time, without having to roll from side to side as I turn pages. I can read while using my electric toothbrush. It's been a revelation.

Fortunately, the Kindle reader for the iPad gives me access to all the books that I already own. In addition to giving me immediate access to my media, I find it's a classier-looking application than Apple's iBooks which is laden with cartoony page animations and fake page-edges. Microsoft Bob must work for Apple now.

But again, there's the glare. And the weight. And because the screen is so touch-sensitive, it's hard not to accidentally turn pages.

But most of all, there's that screen. That computer-like screen. That screen that reminds me of work, and of "the media." That screen that looks nothing like a piece of paper. When I look at the iPad screen, I'm back in the virtual world of cyberspace, rather than relaxing on my couch with a physical object. Of course, the Kindle delivers electronic media, too, but the E Ink screen manages to trick me into feeling like I'm reading a book, not engaging with the media bubble.

No, there will be no recanting for me. The iPad does nothing that I can't do with any of my other computers, or my iPhone. What's more, though, my computers do most of those things better. They have interfaces that are more efficient, screens that are easier to read, and ergonomics that are profoundly more comfortable and healthy for someone with repetitive stress injuries.

Granted, I may not be the target market for this device. I'm comfortable using a computer, and I don't tend to surf the Web as a form of entertainment. I'm tempted to return it, but fear the exposure. My only hope is that my supplies last until some kind of "killer app" appears, and changes my mind.

Ok, so the 11.6-inch WePad was launched running a video and not the real UI. Big deal, at least now we know it'll run Windows 7 in a pinch. In an attempt to save face, the lads at Neofonie posted a video showing what appears to be a real-live working WePad in action. Unfortunately, touch is not yet enabled so the navigation is accomplished with a USB mouse assist. Having been burned once, we're not sure what we can believe about this €450 Atom N450-powered slate. See the video after the break.
