"let's talk about web sites / applications?"
Tue Jan-12-10 12:27 AM by forgivenphoenix

I've been giving some thought to how websites are put together. Not necessarily the aesthetic design, but more of the interaction of the content and the user and I thought to ask what is the best of the web in that regard.

To steer the discussion, I came up with a few sites to offer as an example:

maps.google.com
netflix.com
facebook.com

they offer immediate feedback, yet are immersive. kinda like a video game.

anyway, what is the best of the web to you?

I'm toying with the idea of fucking with GWT.

Basically it's a framework that allows you to build webapps in Java and have them compiled down to optimized javascript.

That's what Google's using for a lot of their stuff.

but the basic idea is that you write your webapp according to their framework then run it through the Eclipse plugin. From there it distills it down into straight up HTML and javascript. It'll supposedly optimize it for different browsers too.

I'm interested in using it for creating mobile apps without targeting a specific platform. It also integrates with GAE.

and can't stand that i have to learn it just to do ajax (not entirely true but go with me). This seems like a cool way for me to get my apps out faster instead of having to figure GAE and then port everything over.

and now I've got to go and learn a whole new language that is being propped up by the ever increasing power of computers and browsers.

WHOLE APPLICATIONS ARE BUILT IN JS NOW!!

that's why. nothing against the language or it's uses.

Yes, there are many a leaky abstraction involved in learning it, but if AJAX is your focus, you'll be good w/ just learning js object literals. You're a Javahead, anyhow, so the learning curve will be close to nil.

the majority of people in the group are all jquery jquery jquery.

few mootools. few yui. one dojo.

the one dojo convinced me to use it in some cases because he's the one writin a full blow application in javascript and since jquery can't handle namespaces they chose dojo.

but do you see what's happened just within javascript.

it's c++ vs java vs c# all over again.

It seems too loose and wild in terms of syntax.

I prefer the structure of java. I don't mind having to use more lines of code to get something done if it's for a good reason.

Also, I could do without the craziness of having to tune the script to handle the shortcomings of different browsers.

the inventor of RoR even said he hates too much code...well the dude that writes Joel on Software has said too much abstraction and you lose the whole purpose of software development and in some cases lose performance.

>It seems too loose and wild in terms of syntax.

the frameworks, especially jquery, do simplify it a bit. And with the new way or processing js coming out in future browsers (forget what it's called but basically it's 4x as fast due to caching of method calls) more and more apps are moving to that arena.

>I prefer the structure of java. I don't mind having to use

YES!!! It's object oriented and logical for a fucking reason. Stop making scripting languages into Java and just use fuckin Java.

>Also, I could do without the craziness of having to tune the
>script to handle the shortcomings of different browsers.

Blame M$ for that.
