"The Google Phone (swipe)"

Could this be the next great white hope in the continuing effort to beat the iPhone, or will this one succeed where everyone else has failed?

http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/12/12/google-phone-unlocked-confirmed/

Last night, we started seeing some Tweets from Google employees and others about a new Android-powered Google phone that was apparently handed out at an “all hands” meeting. Now Google is confirming that this indeed “dogfood” testing a new Android device with employees around the world.

But this isn’t just another Android phone. Very trustworthy sources who have seen the phone say that it is the Google Phone we first wrote about last month (despite the uninformed saying we were dreaming). It will be branded Google and sold by Google as an unlocked phone, which could change everything. As we wrote in our original post:

Google is building their own branded phone that they’ll sell directly and through retailers. They were long planning to have the phone be available by the holidays, but it has now slipped to early 2010. The phone will be produced by a major phone manufacturer but will only have Google branding (Microsoft did the same thing with their first Zunes, which were built by Toshiba).

There won’t be any negotiation or compromise over the phone’s design of features – Google is dictating every last piece of it. No splintering of the Android OS that makes some applications unusable. Like the iPhone for Apple, this phone will be Google’s pure vision of what a phone should be.

The phone itself is being built by HTC, with a lot of input from Google. It seems to be a tailored version of the HTC Passion or the related HD2 (Unlocker scored some leaked pictures back in October which are of the same phone).

Here are the details we know so far about the phone: It will be called the Google Phone and will launch in early January, 2010. It won’t be sold by any one carrier, but instead will be an unlocked GSM phone. In the U.S., that means T-Mobile and possibly AT&T, whose exclusivity deal with the iPhone is about to run out. It will be running Android 2.1

The phone is “really, really fast,” says someone who has seen one in action. It runs on a Snapdragon chip, has a super high-resolution OLED touchscreen, is thinner than the iPhone, has no keyboard, and two mics. The mic on the back of the phone helps eliminate background noise, and it also has a “weirdly” large camera for a phone. And if you don’t like the touchscreen keyboard, a voice-to-text feature is supposed to let you dictate emails and notes by speaking directly into the phone.

First of all, google already sells phones. The ADP1 and the ADP2.
They are unlocked versions of the G1 and HTC Magic.

This will likely be the ADP3 (apparently the HTC Passion/Bravo) which is supposedly going to T-Mobile.

Nothing new here.

ALL phones are just rehashes of Bell's shit!

Nothing YOU like is really new.

And anyway this does have some new stuff. The two mics thing has not been done to my knowledge and has major potential.

Also noteworthy for an OLED screen in widespread US release, and for a possible best-in-class camera

10. "right. ADP stands for Android Developer Phone"
In response to Reply # 7

They're unlocked versions of the commercial phones. They also have an engineering bootloader that lets coders flash newer OS installs automatically. It's also useful for global developers to get their hands on phones if they live in a country that doesn't have them.

>In any case - this definitely feels like the real Google
>Phone. Seems like mountain view is really behind it.

They thing is they did this exact same thing last year. They gifted an ADP1 (essentially a G1) to every Google employee. It's funny because it got very negative headlines when it was done last time.

Tech Crunch has been hyping up the idea of The Google Phone for months now. I think this article is a case them connecting the wrong dots.

In my opinion, Google doesn't need to have its own phone aimed at the mass market. They are doing quite well with their current strategy. There are dozens of models of phones out there running their OS and serving their ads now. They've both low end and high end phones out there reaching new segments of the market. If they were to drop their own model it would alienate all their partners in the Open Handset Alliance. Seems like a bad move to me.

I suspect that they're following the same approach that they're using for ChromeOS. The software's free and they'll work with manufacturers to develop products but they won't sell them on their own.

I could be full of shit though. Google does have some interesting patents regarding cell phones that are able to hop between cell providers at will.

Unless it's a full or close to full size keyboard, having actual keys does nothing for me.

They just need to get their virtual keyboards on Apple's level, then they'll be good.

BY JESSICA E. VASCELLARO

Google Inc. has designed a cellphone it plans to sell directly to consumers as soon as next year, according to people familiar with the matter.

The phone is called the Nexus One and is being manufactured for Google by HTC Corp., these people said. It runs Android, the operating system for mobile phones that Google developed, they added.

But unlike the more than half-dozen Android phones made by phone manufacturers today, Google designed virtually the entire software experience behind the phone, from the applications that run ...

I would guess that there will be an emphasis on VoIP with the phone. Especially if they start making announcements concerning their Gizmo5 acquisition. As many others have stated, Google Voice and Gizmo5 is pretty much a match made in heaven. Putting those together on a phone is a no-brainer so long as the infrastructure is there like you said.

BTW, didn't the FCC express interest in making the VoIP switch nationwide like the Analog to Digital switch?

I still think I'm right, btw.

http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/14/exclusive-first-google-phone-nexus-one-photos-android-2-1-on/

Well here you have it folks, honest-to-goodness pics of the Google Phone... AKA, the Nexus One. As you can see by the photos, the design of the device is largely similar to those we've seen, but the graphic on back is slightly different, and that piece of tape is covering a QR code (how very Google of them). Just like we've heard before, the updated OS features new 3D elements to the app tray, as well as an extended amount of homescreens, though it looks like the lock screen / mute is the same as in Android 2.0.1. Additionally, there's now a new grid icon at the bottom of the homescreen, which when pressed brings up a webOS card-style preview of all homescreen pages -- which raises some interesting possibilities. Apparently there's been a new software update for the device pushed tonight, and sure enough the phone is identified as the Nexus One on the system info page. Quite clearly this device is running on T-Mobile, and is also using WiFi, so there's two other questions you've got answers to. The phone also appears to come loaded up with Google Navigation (a bit of a no-brainer) and the brand-spanking-new Google Goggles. Hardware wise, the Nexus does look incredibly thin and sleek, and while there's not a slew of buttons (those four up front are clearly touch sensitive), there is a dedicated volume rocker along the side. Oh, and note this... no HTC logo anywhere to be found. We'll update the post as / if we get more info, but for now, feast your eyes on the gallery below!

If this phone is cheap, I think I have a candidate for my next phone.

Swipe: http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/14/htc-nexus-one-blessed-by-the-fcc-with-t-mobile-and-att-huspa/

Well lookie here. A little phone by the name of "NEXUSONE" just slipped through the FCC as model number PB99100 built by HTC. The filing also confirms a few more details including microSD expansion, 802.11b/g WiFi, and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR. But the real news comes from looking at the radios: quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE with UMTS/HSUPA on 850/1700/1900 frequencies. In other words, this 3G phone is capable of both 2Mbps up and 7.2Mbps down for both the T-Mobile and AT&T networks in the US of A. If this device is sold unlocked (as rumored), at a reasonable price (as hoped), and with a jaw dropping user experience (as tweeted), well, it could be very disruptive to the status quo. Then again, that's a lot of ifs.

They updated:

Update: We're going to pull this back a bit. So far the FCC has posted a trio of reports this morning for the Nexus One but the outcome is inconclusive based on our own continued research and from the discussion in our comments. According to the bands listed (I, IV, and VIII) we're definitely looking at a T-Mobile USA device as well as applicability on European networks (among others). The whole AT&T range is in doubt as the test lab incorrectly lists 815-880MHz frequencies as part of band VIII. Hold tight as we dig deeper.

Update 2: Only WCDMA Band IV was tested in the Part 22H / 24E / 27 Report, leading us to believe that the Nexus One is going to be HSPA 900 / 1700 / 2100 (a pretty common tri-band 3G setup) plus quadband EDGE. Sorry, AT&T, but that's how the cookie crumbles.

i was really hoping Google would work with HTC and get the stock Android UI looking nicer. i know Google has a disdain for design, but they ain't NEVER gonna catch up with the iphone unless they invest something into the Android user experience.

stock Android reminds me of Ubuntu right now. passable...functional...but ultimately boring as hell. like it or not, Apple is crushing right now because they are MASTERS of appealing design. Google needs to go ahead and buy HTC...Sense UI is the first thing i've seen that's worthy of even being mentioned in the same breath as iphone OS.

i'll hold out for the HTC Bravo/Passion. if they'd just release the HD2 with Android, i'da bought it on day one.

we've barely seen any of the UI from 2.1 that is on the Nexus One. What I have seen looks much better than previous releases.

But really, I'm just utilitarian and care much more about functionality than looks.

In response to Reply # 44

it has a 1ghz proc, the Droid is like 592mhz or something.

I have to admit though, it seems insane that a 500mhz CPU is SLOW in a fucking PHONE these days!I remember when my laptop was BLAZING fast at 333mhz with a HUGE 1gig of ram!

In response to Reply # 46

it's really only part of the equation when determining how fast a processor (let alone an entire computer) is. Back in the day the speed in mhz was a good rule of thumb because all PCs ran on Intels which had similar architecture. Once AMD, Cyrix, and company came along the game changed. Same with the old macs which ran on PPC chips. You didn't hear a lot of speed comparisons based oh mhz because it was apples and oranges.

The cellphone world is like that but worse. There's a bunch of different chip architectures and comparing them based just on clock speed is deceptive.

Holy crap I wrote a lot. Apparently, I don't feel like getting much work done today.

This joint is as snappy as everyone said it was...

Swipe: http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/22/google-nexus-one-stands-with-iphone-and-hero-interface-gets-a-5/

The Google Nexus One trickle continues. Today's two menu items include a 5-minute demonstration of the Android 2.1 interface -- shaky, sure, but it's a pretty thorough rundown of all the menus. We're also serving up some low-resolution picture comparisons of the Nexus One laying side-by-side with the iPhone and HTC Hero. It still eludes us how all these leaking parties don't seem to have in their possession a decent DSLR or camcorder (feel free to give us a buzz, we'll gladly help out). Video after the break.

Yea I'm sure you can cop the unsubsidized version and keep it moving right after swapping the SIM card. I'm still rockin the same SIM card from my old nokia phone lol. When I bricked up a phone & started waiting for a replacement G1 I was able to still receive my calls when i switched SIM back to the old nokia for those two dreaded days.

btw.

once your tmobile contract is up, you can start anew and
buy the Nexus One for the subsidized price, right?

which makes me wonder about another alternative to paying $500+ for
that phone--it'd be wild if you could come out cheaper by ending your
contract; paying the penalty and then starting a new contract. can't
imagine them allowing that tho. might f*ck your credit too, I guess

I've still got a year left on this G1 contract though.

I'll need to crunch the numbers to see if it makes sense to buy unsubsidized and use my existing plan (which is slightly cheaper than the new T-Mobile plans). Only problem is, I'll still be paying for the subsidized cost of the G1 which sucks.

- screen is NICE. put it side-by-side w/ iPhone and its much nicer
- very thin, light
- runs fast

still though, i just can't get with android. the UI is still too convoluted. yeah, i'm one of those people that think a phone has too many buttons if they have more than one, but i had to think too much using the nexus one to do even the simplest things.

pretty impressed overall, but still a bit underwhelmed

Google's biggest announcement was not a phone, but a URL
The Nexus One is a sharp-looking smartphone, but, as nice as it is, it is the least significant thing that Google announced today. The real news is Google's online store, and what it means for the US wireless industry.

By Jon Stokes | Last updated January 5, 2010 5:36 PM

By now, you know the details of Google's first Google-branded, Google-sold "superphone," the Nexus One: huge AMOLED touchscreen, thin-and-light form factor, available unlocked or on T-Mobile, pervasive voice input, etc. And many have already reached for the easiest narrative in which to fit Google's announcement: the Nexus One is Google's attempt at an iPhone-killer.

But regardless of the simple conflict stories that the Nexus One announcement evokes, the reaction on Twitter and the comment thread for our liveblog show that the tech-savvy public already understands that the Nexus One is just another Android phone—the latest and greatest Android phone, and possibly even the latest and greatest smartphone—but an Android phone nonetheless.

The Nexus One may or may not be an iPhone killer (it probably isn't), but it doesn't matter, because the Nexus One was arguably the least significant thing that Google announced today. The real news at Google's event this morning—news that could shake up the mobile industry just as thoroughly as the original iPhone announcement—wasn't a phone at all, but a URL: http://google.com/phone. An online storefront that, if successful, could knock one of the major pillars out the current, much-reviled US carrier model and result in faster, cheaper, more flexible service for mobile users. Here's how it works.

Divide and conquer
Google has confirmed that Nexus One, and all subsequent Google phones sold via the company's online store, will be available unlocked for use on every participating carrier. If a particular Google-branded phone is not on a particular carrier, then that's only because that phone doesn't have the proper radio to support its network. In addition to being unlocked, the phones will also have bundled plan options where the pricing and details are up to the carrier.

By offering a lineup of phones that is essentially carrier-independent (with the radio compatibility caveat), Google has separated the two previously interlocked parts of the phone/plan-buying experience—phone selection and carrier selection—and has done so in a way that threatens one of the most important enablers of carrier lock-in.

In short, what Google announced today wasn't just the Nexus One, but the world's first carrier-independent smartphone store; the Google store is now the only smartphone store in the US where, for every phone on offer, you first pick which phone you want, and then you pick a network and a plan on that network. So you can comparison shop among networks based purely on plan price and network quality, because you already have your phone picked out.

You can be sure that carriers aren't thrilled about giving up phone-based lock-in, so it's a little surprising to see them going along for the ride. If customers turn en masse to Google's online store the way they did to Apple's iPhone a few years ago, then even more networks will be forced to either sign on or lose out. And once they're on Google's platform, they'll be forced to compete purely on the kinds of things that consumers actually want them to compete on, namely, price and quality. And when networks compete on price and quality, prices will go down and quality will go up.

Aligning incentives, and the iPhone curse
To understand just how big of an impact Google's store could have on wireless in the US, take a moment to think about economic incentives for carriers under the current regime.

Right now, with specific phone models available only on specific carriers, consumers must pick a carrier and phone combination. Many consumers actually pick a phone first, and then pick their carrier based on it (witness the mass customer defection to AT&T when the iPhone was announced). If you want to keep using that phone, you have to keep using that carrier. If you want to switch phones without incurring a huge early termination fee (ETF), then you're limited to the selection that your carrier offers in your area.

This is bad for consumers, but it's great for carriers. Carriers don't have to compete solely on network quality; rather, they compete based on a combination of network quality and phone selection. And because they compete partly (mostly?) on phone selection, their incentives are twofold:

They want to offer the largest number of attractive, leading-edge phones in order to attract a user base, and
They want to wring the most money out of that user base for the lowest possible cost.
Incentive number 2 is why wireless networks have performance issues, and why AT&T's network gets more complaints than all others. Call it the "iPhone curse," after the "resource curse" that seems to leave oil-rich nations mired in petty tyranny. Because AT&T has ensnared—and locked in—legions of consumers with the iPhone, the company's incentive is to minimize their infrastructure spending so that they can maximize per-user profits. AT&T also has a motive to nickel-and-dime you to death, because it has you locked in with that amazing phone and its accompanying ETF.

In sum, as long as Apple's red-hot iPhone keeps new customers coming to AT&T and keeps existing customers around in spite of the poor service quality, the carrier has little incentive to actually improve its network, and every incentive to cram as many iPhone users as possible onto each cell tower.

If Google's carrier-independent store succeeds spectacularly, it could break the curse. If the idea behind it succeeds, that could break the curse as well. Wouldn't it be great if Apple ran a similarly carrier-independent iPhone store, or Nokia did the same with its smartphone lineup? I, for one, want to live in a world where a carrier competes for my business by being cheaper and faster than the next guy, and not because it has a phone I want. That's why I'm rooting for Google's store idea to catch on, regardless of what the Nexus One kills or doesn't kill.

i wonder how long it'll be before they start rolling out
the cheaper, less fancy phones. everyone doesn't need

But I don't know the terms of the service for eris since I'm on AT&T which seems only pushes the iPhone

and yes I realize that you would be able to use the majority of the application available without a data plan. I was just expecting more from the platform (admittedly too much)

http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/atandt-finally-goes-android-confirms-dell-htc-and-motorola-on-bo/

Now THIS is interesting.

We're at the AT&T presser here at CES, but it looks like we know what to expect: the carrier just announced that it's launching five new Android devices in the first half of 2010, including devices from Motorola, Dell, and HTC. The Moto device is described as having a "unique form factor," and running Blur, so we're guessing that's the Backflip, and Dell just announced that's it's bringing the Mini 3 to the US, so that's that. That leaves three devices for HTC, and our guess is at least one device with a keyboard and one without -- AT&T says they'll have an "exclusive" device, but that could mean a familiar phone with a new name and a tweaked case. We'll see -- and damn, things just got a lot more interesting in the Android game this week, don't you think?

The phone is lovely but there are issues. The touch screen isn't as accurate as the iPhone, which causes some unnecessary clicks, see ESPN.com. I know you've heard about the 3G issues.

I'll put it through the paces for a few more days before I put the 3gs out there, but it's definitely a nice ass phone.

all google is doing is keeping someone from getting the phone for less than retail. early termination fees are allowed by the FCC based off of the principle that because carriers are subsidizing the costs of the phone up front, they can recoup that on the backend. google is the one subsidizing the phone here, so really, T-Mobile should have no claim to an early termination fee.

and it's only for four months, anyway.

i mean, why would Google want to undercut themselves on their unlocked phone by letting you just buy one with a contract and then cancel it and save $100-200.

they might be a little clunky with how they're handling this unlocked-phone-out-the-gate business model, but i don't see anything underhanded about it.

It's hard to reproduce but every once in a while it'll go wild when I'm trying to scroll down a really, really long page. I think it has something to do with too much friction on the screen or something.

Also, they shouldn't have been so cheap and shipped this thing with at least an 8 GB card.

but the web only access in terms of ordering and getting support for the phone kinda sends some red flags to me.

But I'm assuming the Nexus One will cause the other phone companies to up the ante in terms of technology, so I can't be totally bad at Google for creating this device.

It includes Engadget's beloved Pinch & Zoom so I guess Engadget will have to find something else to fixate on.

I'm kind of annoyed that there's no fix for the screen issue though.

New Software Update for Nexus One phones

Starting today, Nexus One users will begin to receive an over-the-air software update on their phones. This update provides some great new features, and fixes a few problems that some users might have experienced, including:

Google Goggles: this mobile application will now be available directly on your device by launching it from your All Apps menu. Just use your Nexus One camera to start searching the web

Google Maps: the Maps application with be updated to a new version, Google Maps 3.4, which will include:

* Starred items synchronized with maps.google.com - access your favorite places from your phone or computer
* Search suggestions from your personal maps.google.com history - makes it easy to search for places you've searched for before
* Night mode in Google Maps Navigation - automatically changes your screen at night for easier viewing and driving

Pinch-to-zoom functionality: devices will now include a new pinch-to-zoom mechanism in the phone's Browser, Gallery and Maps applications

3G connectivity: we will provide a general fix to help improve 3G connectivity on some Nexus One phones

In order to access the update, you will receive a message on your phone's notification bar. Just download the update, wait for it to install, and you should be all set. This update will be rolled out gradually to phones - and most users might not receive the notification until the end of the week. We hope you enjoy these new features and look forward to your feedback.

plus the Sense UI is slower and it adds inconsistency since it's not present throughout the device.

This would be nice if true...
I think i'd prefer the stock android OS though

Swipe: http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/02/23/att-picking-up-htc-desire-sprint-grabbing-htc-hero2/ (Via CrunchGear)

We’ve just been hit up by a source close to HTC, and let’s just say the Android invasion (of high quality Android devices, at least) has only just started. One of our connects let us know that while Google will be looking to sell an AT&T 3G-compatible Nexus One directly through their web store (just like we previously reported), the actual AT&T unit will be the HTC Desire. It will also apparently go to market on AT&T shelves as the HTC Desire as well. This will give AT&T users HTC’s Sense UI, but we’ve been told the physical attributes of the unit might change from the HTC Desire that we’ve all seen. Nothing major, just possibly some material/finish/color changes to the casing. We have been told to expect the HTC Desire to land on AT&T in the May to June timeframe.
Now, on to our boys and girls at Sprint. We have been told Sprint will be continuing their HTC Android tradition with the HTC Hero2. That device, will indeed be the HTC Legend, except it will apparently be slightly modified. Just like Sprint’s original HTC Hero was. Our contact hasn’t seen the device first hand so we can’t be sure what kind of changes are in store, though if history is any indicator, we don’t think a little more rounded and less edgy look would be outside the realm of possibility. We have no release timetable for the Sprint HTC Hero2 at this time.
Remember, this isn’t confirmed — the pieces fit together perfectly — but we felt it was worthy enough to warrant a post.

I know I'm personally wary of the online approach. mainly bc a phone is
such a big commitment. I'd feel comfortable copping an mp3 player and
quickly returning it if there was something I didn't like, but a phone? nah.
let me see it in person first. and of course, the customer service
situation appears to be ridiculous based on the stories that've come out

thoughts from actual N1 owners?

http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/03/12/google-facing-slowdowns-with-its-online-only-model-for-handset-sales/

Bad news today for Google and the Nexus One as investment firm
Goldman Sachs has slashed its estimate for Nexus One sales by a
third. Predicting a bright and rosy future for the Nexus One, Goldman
Sachs originally estimated that Google will sell 3.5 million Nexus
Ones in FY2010. After a disappointing first month in which Google
only sold a rumored 80,000 handsets, Goldman Sachs has lowered its
2010 estimate to a mere one million handsets which will be sold
across multiple carriers including T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, and
Vodafone. Google’s FY2011 outlook will improve to two million
handsets if, according to Goldman Sachs, Google rolls out second
generation handset, markets it aggressively, and drops it online-only
sales model. That last criteria is condemning and suggests that
Google’s online-only model needs to be supplemented, if not
supplanted, by brick and mortar retail sales. So peer into those
magic eight balls that predict the future and let us know — is
Google’s online-only sales model fatally flawed or does it just need
some time to mature?

Can't do any such thing on the Nexus One. I'd have to get at someone who has the damn phone or someshit. It's about tasting the proof before buying the rest of the pudding. I wonder how hard they pushing it overseas tho, seems like they'd be more open to buying an unsubsidized phone.

which is in a lot more hands than the Nexus One

maybe they're pushing the Android partners to step their games up
in terms of hardware specs and design. or they wanted to get
their hands dirty (again) by closely designing a phone. or like you
said, it's a test run for getting people used to buying phones
online--and an opportunity for Google to learn how to sell phones online

I'm still hoping Google will run some tv commercials and allow the
N1 to be sold through other online stores, even better if they put it
in some physical stores so people can buy and demo the phone
in-person. it'd be wack for such a good phone not to get
the attention it deserves

(on that note. tell me why ATL's metro stations are plastered
in Palm Pre and Pixi ads, except the ads don't give any info about
the phones? they just list the name Palm. how's that gonna work?)

157. "what do you expect when you have no commercials or in-store ads?"
In response to Reply # 155

when people go into T-Mobile stores they don't see big displays
for the N1. people aren't seeing it advertised on TV the way the
Droid and iPhone were advertised--and still are being advertised
today. the funny thing is, people were paranoid about Google
alienating Android partners when it seems Goog has almost
intentionally held back its promotion of the N1

Oh well, here's to hoping a subsidized Nexus Two plays nicely with current family plans for $199

I actually believed the process would take off.

I underestimated how much people wanted to actually see the product before they buy.

i guess as long as you can get unlocked versions of their phones it's all good though.

like you said, they could have put just a little more effort into letting people know about the store.

that all the Android fangirls are done gawking over it.

I just hate the weird anti-cultish-to-the-point-its-exactly-a-fucking-cult nature of people who tend to hold up the platform and don't want to be associated with it.

Now that they're all worried about the HTC super deluxe, maybe I'll buy one of these as a backup phone.

(they still gotta bring that price down by $200 or so)
