I only have two external 500 Gig joints right now. One handles my time machine backups and the other is for my PC. Both are almost full. I'm looking to cop a 1TB however I'm worried about that being just plain too much space and it crashing. Should I stick with another 500 Gig?
nigga get a 160 gig if you worried about too much space. foh.

I don't mean literally too much space. I'm asking when you get a drive of that size does it have a tendency to crash more or sooner than a smaller drive like a 500 Gig?
Either way from your responce I'm guessing 1TB is the way to go.

with a Western Digital external. I have two 1TB externals right now, and I think I'll be needing another one soon. You'll be paying less per GB that way, and prices on these things have dropped considerably, especially around the holidays. There are 1.5TB drives going for $100 dollars or less if you do a proper search.

that way it's easily expandable when you need it to grow, with redundant backups provided you have enough hdd space.
i've been using Windows Home Server for the past few months, and it's been great for the PCs in my house. the server itself doesn't need to be anything powerful, so if you got some spare parts handy you should be set.
and it looks like you can use it for your Time Machine backups:
call me paranoid, but i don't trust any hdd, so your best bet is 1) redundancy -thus the server+externals- and 2) keeping your irreplaceable data on an external off-site (like at a family member's place). that way you're set in case something really bad happens to your server (theft, fire, etc.)
