"Snow Leopard, worth it?"

So, i'm reading about it on Apple's website: http://www.apple.com/macosx/refinements/

sounds like a lot of good shit. Especially this: "Snow Leopard takes up less than half the disk space of the previous version, freeing about 7GB for you"

I think 7 GB of hard drive space is worth the $30 on its own. I dont even get how installing an update gives me that much space but whatever.
Im sure some of you all are gonna upgrade. Any good reason why I shouldnt?

You know, we could all be reading a book right now.

how an upgrade frees that much HD space? Does it remove the old version and install a smaller version? does it compress the files?

You know, we could all be reading a book right now.

So, in theory it could be half the size because they don't have data for a PPC version of Mail and and Intel version of Mail, and a PPC version of Safari and an Intel version of Safari, etc.

That's just a guess though.

i can see the total size of the dvd being smaller because of dropping ppc, but actually on disk?

i think a lot of it has to do with moving from carbon to cocoa for the whole os, but i'm not sure

that you don't need (never needed to be honest)--print drivers and such...so you CAN get 7 (or more) GB free, but you also can get less--I've been hearing from 3-10 GB depending on your install.

ZFS is the deal. I went to a Sun class a month and a half ago and was
amazed at the feature set for zfs. I'll probably be taking a zfs class
before the end of the year. For snow leopard, zfs would be sweet to
have but the majority of Mac owners don't run any type of raid or
lvm software so it wouldn't be used to it's fullest capacity.

Mac Pro owners running a multi-disk setup is a different story.

I read that same article you linked and on my late 2007 Imac core 2 duo process the efi is 64bit, so I'm good.

I read another article that basically said if you have a core 2 duo and above processor, you should be good to go. The efi, as you stated is the kill switch, though.

To be, hate inspector numero uno, you are paying very close attention.

"So far, it's not yet known if Apple will enable owners of machines with 32bit EFI to boot into a 64bit kernel in Snow Leopard-final; Apple might offer an EFI update, or remove the artificial limitation. The same applies to MacBooks; it might be that Apple is planning on using 64bit as a selling point to drive people to buy MacBook Pros instead of ordinary MacBooks."

one question though - I don't really get what the difference is between a 64 bit kernel and running 64 bit apps. what kind of tasks would you see a performance difference on between a 32 and 64 bit kernel?

I don't really understand how they're able to run 64 bit apps on a 32 bit system to begin with. They might have some compatibility mode that lets the application address all the memory it wants but doesn't give access to all those extra registers a 64 bit machine has. That's an extremely naive guess though.

96. "no need for 64 bit kernel if you have less than 32GB of RAM (giz)"
In response to Reply # 52

The language at the end of the article is confusing, but the main point is that since you can run 64 bit apps, for most people, booting into the 64-bit kernel is kind of meaningless.

http://gizmodo.com/5343443/snow-leopard-currently-restricts-64+bit-booting-to-newer-macs

In the newest leaked build of Snow Leopard, 64-bit booting isn't enabled by default on certain older (though not that old) Macs, which instead boot automatically into 32-bit. The question: Is Apple backtracking on Snow Leopard's 64-bit capabilities? Updated:

As it stands right now, with the current build (10a432, which may be the final release), the answer ranges somewhere between "sort of" and "no." Essentially, desktop and laptop Macs will by default boot into 32-bit. However, you can force 64-bit booting by holding the 6 and 4 keys while starting up, and even if you don't, those machines will still be able to run 64-bit programs without trouble. So the restriction from automatic 64-bit booting is an intentional move from Apple.

Update: We've gotten some explanation from Apple on the issue at hand. The deal is, Mac desktops and laptops will indeed boot with a 32-bit kernel, while only the Xserve will be 64-bit. But this won't matter to the consumer. Our Apple contact explained:

***The 32-bit kernel fully supports 64-bit applications, all system libraries that 64-bit applications use are fully 64-bit, and 64-bit applications have a full 64-bit virtual address space of 16 exabytes available to them on Mac OS X. The primary benefit of a 64-bit kernel is to improve the efficiency of accessing over 32GB of RAM.***

As a whole, machines with lots of RAM (over 4GB) are more efficient with a 64-bit kernel, but even though consumer Macs will have a 32-bit kernel, all Intel-based Macs will run 64-bit programs automatically, which gives you the most obvious benefits. So really the only benefit to having a 64-bit kernel is if you've got 32GB of memory, a frankly monstrous amount of RAM, and hell, the hardware won't even allow that much. All 64-bit applications will run on the Macs with either Intel Xeon or Intel Core 2 Duo processors, so this 32-bit brouhaha is pretty much a misunderstanding.

well in that case you'd be spending another $600+ on a new piece of shit Dell because the one running Vista makes a beep noise and doesn't turn on.
Fuck Microsoft. haven't used a PC in like 4 years now. fuck Apple too but at least their shit works.

are you insinuating that no one's going to pay to upgrade from vista because they don't "need" to?

edit - "have to" in my last reply was the wrong thing to say. I meant "have to if you want to upgrade", didn't mean to imply it was necessary.

This release might convince me to start saving up if it's lightning fast. I had a go on my brother's 24 inch intel iMac the other day and I couldn't believe how responsive that was.

I can see my 20 inch becoming a TV and music centre for my bedroom (it's still pretty damn great for those purposes).

an iMac DV (a green dust collector) and a PowerMac G5 (a workhorse) because there's no reason to keep em because my Intel iMac eats them both. They were both great Macs in their day but that day has past. It's time to upgrade, push that G5 on craigslist/ebay.

But I'm broke at the moment. I will in the next 6-8 months I reckon though.

Oh and I'm gonna keep it anyway. Use it as a multimedia hub in my bedroom - I'll fill it up with loads of videos and music, and then share it on a network to be used anywhere in the house. Frees up space on other computers and means I have all the videos and music I want in my bedroom. I can't imagine I'll get much money for it anyway.

Computers be expensive though, and I have some other demands on my money - mostly cooking related. Still haven't bought a new comp btw, but I'm starting to put money aside, and will wait for the next set of iMacs I reckon. The recent new set had quite a few problems I heard.

"For owners of Intel-based Macs who are still using the older Tiger version of the Mac OS, Apple is officially making Snow Leopard available only in a "boxed set" that includes other software and costs $169," Mossberg said.
"The reasoning is that these folks never paid the $129 back in 2007 to upgrade to Leopard. But here’s a tip: Apple concedes that the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade will work properly on these Tiger-equipped Macs, so you can save the extra $140."

No excuse OS X Tiger people.

It's simply an incremental update to the previous Leopard release. If it was a major jump (as in a 90% new OS as some would claim) then jumping versions wouldn't work.

RDF fail.

and I understand why.

most xp (all) have 32-bit Windows and you can't just upgrade a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit version. It's a full install every time. moving up you may lose support for legacy apps...forever. I'm reading shit left and right about broken apps in SL, even more will be broken for Tiger users. It would be cool if everything just works...working in IT I know first hand that all this shit breaks, it's always legacy shit just like Windows. It either breaks fast and hard, interrupts nothing at all or it's Hiroshima. Most of my apps check out but I may have to leave some of these apps behind.

not a 90% rewrite of the entire code base.

my point is that tiger users can get a monumental upgrade for thirty bucks. the "fuck paying for service packs" argument just doesn't hold up. for someone to upgrade from xp to 7 they have to drop a (couple) hundred bucks. from tiger to snow leopard they have to drop thirty.

They're just dropping all the PPC code from the binaries (which is where that drop in disk usage comes I suspect). Sounds like they put in work for some shit (Finder) though.

Also, it should be noted that Tiger users are supposed to buy the $169 bundled version of Snow Leopard. While the $30 version may work, it's a breach of the EULA and should not be considered a valid means of upgrading.

you seem to end up having some issues
it seems that a whole lot of system fonts got deleted as part of the upgrade
some apps are having issues with this

firefox, mail and address book so far

address book and mail show italics where there shouldnt be any
firefox is showing bold fonts in places where there shouldnt be any

since I got the MBP from that JoshClark "scam" along with some of you guys.

I was going to get a bunch of my friends who also got the MBPs with me to chip in and get the Leopard Family Pack awhile ago so we could all upgrade, but they all sort of flaked on doing it.

Then I saw that the Snow Leopard OS had leaked on various torrent sites, and I got curious and did some research and found out that the $29 disc ($25 at Best Buy; thanks OKP!) was a full OS install, so I rushed to BB and got it. I had no idea yesterday was the release day either, so that's pretty cool that I got it that early considering I didn't even have any clue.

I was freaking geeked to get it because I haven't been able to use the latest version of programs (e.g., uTorrent, VLC, etc.) because they didn't support the Tiger OS.

So for me, it was totally worth it just to be able to use the most up-to-date versions of these programs, and all the features of Leopard and Snow Leopard are completely new to me (did not pay attention to all the hype, so I didn't know what to expect). It's going to take me awhile to configure Expose, Stacks, and Spaces to make my computing as efficient as possible. There's probably so much more I should know about. My computer also "feels" faster, but that could just be me using confirmation bias as I would like to believe it is doing so.

at least that i was aware of.

that was very frustrating because I had to use Azureus (now Vuze?) and Transmission for awhile.

also, there were some videos i couldn't watch or had issues with because i couldn't run VLC with all the latest codecs.

it was frustrating for a bit, and i can see RJ's issue with that, but i'm glad i got the OS and it was only 25 dollars.

hell, i got my MBP practically for free, and a 25 dollar disc to upgrade isn't fucking bad at all.

i will probably be getting an iMac or MBP once complete re-design comes long, which will probably take some time.

but the MBP i got with the help of the guys on this forum is still working fine after a few years (can't say that about any windows pc or laptop i've encountered). right now i'm mainly using it for just casual entertainment, word, powerpoint, and the most intense thing i run is SPSS to do data analysis, and everything's just fine.

so there's really no need for a new computer yet, and i don't like to buy things that aren't exactly "new." i'd hate buying a MBP now and have a new build just a year or two from now. i can't wait for whatever they have next.

what is the usual time period for them to refresh the line in terms of a totally new re-design?

by cleaning the system font cache a few times

but apparently if you run any type of font management such as font
explorer x you're screwed

at first i had issues with the interface fonts in firefox being screwed up

then that was fixed by cleaning the system font cache and rebooting
but in it's place mail and address book started displaying italics and bolds randomly

now somehow that's gone and all the text on certain websites is italics and bolds. for example here on okp

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/08/31/mac-os-x-now-hdtv-ready-with-10-6/

Got a fancy new Mac with some flavor of DisplayPort connector and a shiny new copy of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard installed? If you do and you also happen to hook said Mac up to an HDTV via an HDMI adapter, then head on over to System Preferences to check out the latest uncovered Snow Leopard nugget of awesomeness.

Three new resolution options are now available for your HDTV-viewing experience: 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. This should be good news for anyone rocking the HTMac set-up, or even for anyone who wants to check it out and may not be fully-versed with some of the issues.

We've tried to reproduce the above using a DVI -> VGA adapter and have thus far found bupkis. We're not sure if this works with DVI -> HDMI either, but we do know it works with DisplayPort -> HDMI. Check it out for yourself and let us know your results.

Snow Leopard vs. Ubuntu Jaunty vs. Ubuntu Karmic

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=ubuntu_karmic_leopard&num=1

Interesting numbers, although if I were playing for the other team I'd argue that the situation will improve once all that software is rewritten to take advantage of OpenCL and Grand Central. Of course, if I was playing for that team, I'd more than likely be an idiot.

Ubuntu applications for what I need to do with a computer?

I don't mean any snark, because I like Ubuntu, but it seems like open source developers always drop the ball when it comes to multimedia programs. If the OS has all of these great capabilities, why can't someone at least turn out a single decent video editing program?

They compared the benchmarks because SL was marketed as better, faster, stronger. I don't see how an entire OS is invalidated because it doesn't fill your tiny niche.

If Snow Leopard is so great, how come nobody's putting out any good games for it?

is pretty damned large.

My reply was really an expression of annoyance at the fact that Ubuntu is apparently able to do nearly everything better than Mac OS X, but there are hardly any applications to show for it. I would love mroe than anything to be able to use decent open source video editing or multimedia software; outside of the GIMP, the market is scarce. I know there's several proprietary packages that will run on Red Hat Enterprise and such, but why not Ubuntu?

2) Maybe Snow Leopard is better, faster, and stronger, but perhaps Mac OS X 10.5 was even slower than Ubuntu than Snow Leopard is.

3) You already know that I don't give fuck about computer games, but I'm sure some company will tricle out a handful of games compatible with 10.6 at some point. Gaming has never been a strong focus of the Mac market and probably never will be.

when i upgraded to snow leopard i had a hard time playing some of my .wmv files. initially it gave me an error message that i needed to use quicktime. so i opened quicktime and opened the wmv file from there. i found this kind of annoying i couldn't access the file directly through finder so i dl'd the new flip4mac beta that was said to be compatible with snow leopard and after i installed it it no longer had the error. BUT, when i played the wmv file it takes forever to load, so i can't fast foward. can someone help me out?

yeah i would rather avoid converting if theres a way to just watch wmv files (plus i don't want to use up space). flip4mac worked well with Quicktime 7.

So my friends and I did a group by Family pack. Know what's the difference between that and the $29 disc? A sticker that says "family pack". No reg keys, no mandatory online registration, no nothing. You could buy one single copy and let 800 friends use it and they wouldnt know or care. I think this was Apple's In Rainbows moment; if you want it for free, you can get it for free, but payment would be nice.

Actually kind of funny.

In response to Reply # 0

I noticed that I didn't put a meeting in iCal and found the email with the details. The info was spread out in different responses and not in a specific order. The lady said that she wanted to meet on "Tuesday the 9th at 14.30" I responded in the next one saying where and she just wrote back the place. I clicked on Tuesday and it asked if I wanted to put it in my iCal and it went to the right date, time and added where plus her name.

I likes.

The offspring :-D

If you don't the default blue outer-glow in Exposé you can easily hack to make it look more appealing.

Go to the folder System/Libary/CoreServices. Locate the Dock application. Ctrl-Click it and select Show Package Contents. Within that navigate to the Contents/Resources folder. Here you will find two png files: expose-window-selection-small.png and expose-window-selection-big.png You can overwrite these to create a new look.

See attached files for a neat white outline.

Download the file, unzip it, navigate to the folder and drop the files in. It's not like you're using a Hex editor or something.
