"***FIFA 10 Mega-Post***"
Sun Aug-16-09 08:14 PM by BrooklynWHAT

I was gonna write out a big ass post, but I'mma crib one off another forum cause its so good and add a few things to it. All in all the things i'm hearing make me very optimistic that this will be much better than FIFA 09 which was a great game in its own right. Theres supposed to be a lot more info coming at this week's Gamescom.

Make sure you click the link cause at the bottom of the post, theres a bunch of links with Hands-On Impressions and Developer Interviews that go in detail on the new mechanics.

Fifa 10 General Improvements

* 360° dribbling
* Skilled dribbling, holding LB/L1 goes in to a high-res dribbling motion, can be used to take players on.
* Custom Set Pieces, offline and online, online CSPs may be disabled if certain routines and abused online. *edited*
* Training Mode Added with x versus x custom number of players.
* 'Anything goes' practice matches (no referee!)
* Realistic fatigue system, no more 90 minute sprinting!
* Continuous play, less cut-scenes that break up the play, fouls, yellow and red cards etc do not have cut-scenes *edited*
* Realistic weather patterns and night matches
* Ability to do long "rory delap" type throw-ins
* Goal side flat ad boards on the pitch are gone
* Improvements to the advantage rule
* No scoring from kick off
* Graphic improvements, you can see players breath in cold weather, player graphics have been redone and are an improvement on last year
* Goalkeepers can get sent off
* Greatly improved goalkeepers with ability to make double saves
* New nets
* Improved ball physics, ball feels heavier and does not 'float' across the pitch
* Improved player awareness, no more getting in the way of cross field passes
* CPU will perform skill moves
* Can change the freekick taker during the game
* Improved ball control/trapping
* Game speed faster than 08 but slower than 09
* Able to move the wall when defending freekicks
* Improved tackling physics, the player goes for the ball and not through the opponent
* Improved shooting mechanics, two stage, first half of power up controls power and second controls height, possible to drive shots
* Overhaul of animations, all completely new, walking/sprinting with and without the ball, some additional skill animations
* many more goalkeeper animations
* Matches calculated on a minute by minute basis. Guessing that refers to how the AI reacts to your performance.
* Rain and snow are selectable in normal matches
* The EA logo has been toned down on the replays
* Upto 64-player tournaments with all teams user-controlled
* Ability to take quick free-kicks
* The ball will hit the woodwork less frequently
* Goalkeepers can take freekicks
* All stadiums can be played at night and will have weather effects *new*
* Players will look wet when it rains *new*
* Players may get dirty and slide further when it rains (TBC) *new*

Fifa 10 Manager Mode Improvements

* A more user-friendly manager mode hub/desktop
* More user-friendly navigation system
* Ability to edit kit numbers
* Improved Financial System
* New wage budget
* New board difficulty level setting
* New level of authenticity and realism with regard to signing players
* 2-tier bidding for players, first agree fee with club then agree terms with the player
* Manual growth removed but replaced with improved authentic/realistic auto-growth
* New scout ability to predict future growth of players
* Pre-season friendlies added, arranged by the new Assistant Manager
* The Assistant Manager will also assess the importance of upcoming matches and rotate your line-up for you. This is especially visible in early cup games, where you can see that your star players often get a rest in these games. He can also be turned off so you can take care of all the team management without him interfering.
* Board confidence update after every game
* Ability to renogotiate with players immediately and not through negotiation history
* Transfer rumours
* CPU squad rotation
* Fix to the long-term injury bug i.e. there will be long term injuries
* No "available negotiations" cap, unlimitied number of transfer offers depending on your available budget
* Final decision on player transfers. You can bid for multiple players for the same position and if they all accept then you can choose which players to sign and which not to sign.
* Manager mode will not end if you get sacked, your reputation will take a hit and you will get offers from other clubs.
* You will receive job offers at the end of a season "The better your Reputation, the better the offers will be. You will be able to see their squads overall as well as their key players in every area of their squad. The clubs financial situation will be shown as well. "
* Able to assign generic stadiums to clubs and rename them, and set weather conditions for that stadium.
* Improved atmosphere in matches with rivals and more 'frantic' celebrations
* Ability to view opponents starting 11 pre-match
* Ability to shortlist up to 20 players
* Computer generated player names will be regionalized, "no more Scott McFadden from Brazil"
* Kit editing "Now that we know how important the Kit editing screen was (based on the amount of complaints we've received for not having it), we've made a new one for FIFA 10 . " Probably just relates to the ability to edit kit numbers but no more info available at present
* Additional in-game commentary inc "Transfer speech, Player Form Speech, Board Confidence comments and much more to come"
* Players are no longer tied to a club for 12 months after signing, they can move on as early as the next transfer window
* Financial bonus for promotion, to help bolster your squad
* Players will develop at other clubs, not just the user controlled one
* You can set the age of your created player and assign him to your MM club
* You can also edit the stats of your created player
* Contract length plays a role in the market value of a player
* English play-off finals will be played at Wembley *new*
* New stats screen which tracks goal assists *new*

Fifa 10 Online Improvements

* Dream team glitch fixed! No more custom teams in ranked games.
* Improved club management settings
* Improved club match making
* New 5v5 mode
* More player stats in Clubs
* Ability to check Club stats online
* Only one "any" player in a team
* Search criteria will be shown on screen during matchmaking
* You will see at the end of every game how many ranking points you earned
* Ability to end online matches in a draw, if both sides agree, 1v1 only
* Fifa Interactive World Cup (I'm guessing like Interactive League) where team stats are equalled similar to Clubs matches.
* Less boosting! Reduced ranking points per match for each match played against the same person.
* "Faster identification and punishment of cheaters" helped by increased stat monitoring.
* New EA Live Team that will monitor and track down cheaters.
* Idle players will be disconnected in 10v10 matches.
* Ability to search for matches based on team star rating *new*

1. "the NEW 360 Dribbling Explained by EA's Gary Paterson (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0
Sun Aug-16-09 08:37 PM by BrooklynWHAT

This is a big change for the series and it seems like a major upgrade for on-the-ball movement. I plan to take the piss on all of yous with it.

http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/fifa-10-sony-playstation-3-microsoft-xbox-360/781847-fifa10-360-degree-dribbling.html

Hey all,

First let me introduce myself. I'm Gary Paterson (obviously), I'm from Scotland (Aberdeen supporter so REALLY bad week for me ) and I'm the Creative Director on FIFA10. I work with David, Mike, Christophe, Aaron, Santiago and Marcel to design the features of the game. I have been on FIFA since 07 on PS2 where I was gameplay producer and programmer, before joining the PS3/360 team for FIFA08 and 09 as lead gameplay designer/producer. Apologies for not being on here sooner, its been quite a hectic year as I'm sure you'll all understand.

I see that there has been quite a lot of traffic on here recently regarding 360 degree dribbling and I just want to send a quick post to let you all know how it works and why we chose to make it work the way that it does.

Let me begin by saying that 360 degree dribbling will have an affect on all dribble speeds: Jog, Skilled and Sprint, and will affect trapping. However, the effect on sprint is different than the others for reasons I'll explain in a moment.

Jogging
When jogging with the ball FIFA10 will give you full 360 degree control, when requesting a turn you will get exactly the angle you input on the left stick. One note on this however is that for turns less than 22.5 degrees (22.5 degrees may sound like an odd limit but this is basically 360 / 16 ) you will not get a turn immediately. Instead he will make the small adjustment the next time he catches up to the ball. This is because we don't want your player to constantly be playing a turn animation as this will affect the fluidity of the dribble and also affect pass responsiveness as we do not allow you to pass while you are about to touch the ball in a dribble turn.

The effect of this is that FIFA10 feels more fluid and you can now beat defenders, protect the ball and ultimately make plays that you could not before.

Skilled Dribbling
Like jogging, skilled dribble is fully 360 degree though the real power of the feature is really in the sideways movement.

Sprinting
The affect on sprinting is slightly different from jogging. The reason for this is that when sprinting your momentum dictates that you cannot adjust your body to perform the same turns that you can when jogging. In FIFA10 the range of turn that we allow when sprinting is ANY angle from 0 degrees to 22.5 degrees (plus 180), this is different from 09 as in that game we could only turn 0 or 22.5 left or 22.5 right.

Again, the reason we do not allow full 360 in sprinting is that it is just not physically possible to turn say 94 degrees and stay at sprint speed. Obviously if you did want to perform a 94 degree turn you could release the sprint button and the player would perform a 'Sprint to Jog' turn that would satisfy your pad angle request and turn 94 degrees or whatever angle you were requesting.

The result of this is that you can finely adjust your sprint direction in order to not lose so much momentum when turning and potentially get away from a defender without slowing down and getting tackled like you would in 09.

Hopefully I have explained that clearly, its difficult without diagrams

Summary
So in summary and as a comparison to FIFA09, these are the ranges of movement that you will see in the game:

Jogging 09: 8 directions (0, ±45, ±90, ±135, 180)
Jogging 10: 360 degrees

Skilled Dribble 09: N/A
Skilled Dribble 10: 360 degrees

Sprint 09: 4 directions (0, ±22.5, 180)
Sprint 10: 45 degrees (any angle from -22.5 to +22.5) and 180

We have shown the game now to quite a large group of people, mostly community and journalists and I have to say that 360 degree dribbling is one of the features that has stood out for the majority of people. The number of comments that I have heard about people 'not being able to go back to 09' due to the freedom and fluidity that this feature gives them is encouraging. This feature along with the numerous other changes that we have made have made FIFA10 what I believe to be a more fluid, more authentic and more fun game, I hope you will agree when you get the chance to play (fingers crossed).

Hopefully this post has addressed some of the concerns that you have. I'll try to post on here more often going forward.

Thanks for listening, and thanks for your continued support.

Gary

http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/fifa-10-sony-playstation-3-microsoft-xbox-360/697121-manager-mode-questions-answers.html

I took some time ask MM Producer Marcel Kuhn a few questions regarding my favorite FIFA mode, Manager Mode. Please post your constructive feedback and perhaps we can get more insight from the dev team on other modes as they are revealed shortly. Enjoy...

Wepeeler - "I'm big into transfers and building ultimate teams. Is that harder this year?"

Marcel Kuhn - "Definitely, two major reasons for that are the new layers of decision-making in the transfer process and the re-written financial system. Let's start with the financial system, instead of relying on the sponsors, this year the board will be the major source of "income" for your club. The board will grant you two different budgets you will have to manage, Club Budget and Wage Budget. Club budget will be used to pay for players transfer fees, purchase staff upgrades and so on, while the Wage Budget will pay for your players wages. You will start with a specific amount of money, which ensures that Chelsea and Manchester City are rich while Bolton or promoted side Burnley don’t have a lot of cash to spend. During the season you will make a bit of money via ticket sales and sponsors, but what matters the most is to fulfill your board objectives. At the end of the year the board will look at your performance and refresh your Club and Wage Budget accordingly. Obviously, they will only grant you more money to spend, if they are happy with your performance. As you’re dealing with a limited amount of money, the new player transfer and wage values come into play. Players like C. Ronaldo or Kaka were fairly affordable in FIFA 09, in FIFA 10 they will be much closer to the actual transfer and wage values that are being paid for them at the moment."

"As a little bonus, we’ve added a Board Difficulty level this year which will affect your starting Club and Wage budget. This will allow users that want to try out the mode for the first time to start with a fully loaded wallet, while seasoned Manager Mode veterans can challenge themselves on a higher difficulty level and work hard towards signing their dream players."

"In terms of the transfer system, there are a couple of key changes, i.e. which players are for sale, but the most time was spent splitting the logic into a two-tiered process. First you have to convince the club of the desired player and then you have to convince the player. The factors that play into this are not only the offered money, but also things like, how many players you already have in the same position, is your club going to play in Europe next season, how much mentorship can you offer the player as his manager and so on. The overall result will be that you will have a harder time building your ultimate team, but it will also be more realistic and transparent to you why you were able to sign or not sign players."

Wep - "How is the experience point system different? Last year it was easy to get a team of 99s after only 2 seasons. Has that been tweaked?"

MK - "Another portion of the game we completely re-did. We weren’t happy at all with the growth system in FIFA 09 and a lot of post-release user feedback showed us that we’re on the right track. As a first step we removed manual growth, Manager Mode is supposed to be a realistic and authentic experience, being able to make Sami Hyypia from a 84 rated centre back into a 99 rated left winger is neither realistic nor authentic. Therefore we decided to reset to clock on the growth system."

"What you will see in FIFA 10 is, that players will collect experience in 3 different categories – Physical XP, Mental XP and Skill XP. How fast they collect XP depends on the amount of time they play, who they play against and so on. Once they hit a growth point in either of these 3 categories, the related attributes will either increase or decline. In addition every player will have a potential he can reach, this way every player will have its own individual growth. Younger players with high potential will collect XP faster, especially their physical skills will improve quickly, while older players have a higher overall but might start to decline. As a result the user will have to make a lot of decisions regarding his line-up, do I play the young hotshot and allow him to reach his potential as fast as possible or do I go with the currently high skilled player that has started to decline?"

"To give the user a some help making these decisions, we’ve added a new ability for your scout. Your scout will be able to predict the future overall for a player, depending on the scout’s level he can look further and more accurate into the future."

Wep - "Are there "practice sessions" where you can prepare your team for a big game?"

MK - "In FIFA 10 we will introduce pre-season friendlies where you can fine-tune your line-up and maybe get some good results in order to improve your players form before the going gets tough. Player form is a new concept we adopted from Live Season. Note that within Manager Mode, we actually don’t use the real world player form, the form will be solely based on how the player performs within the Manager Mode World. The result of playing really well over a longer period of time will be that the players form increases and his attributes will be slightly improved for the time being. Of course the same applies if your players don’t perform well, which will make it harder to get your club out of a slump."

Wep - "Can you practice with your actual squad?"

MK - "Practice Mode is not included within Manager Mode for FIFA 10. That being said, if that is a feature that users would like to see specifically for Manager Mode, this can be an early addition for the next FIFA wish list. In the meantime, for FIFA 10, there will be a new Practice Mode. It will be accessible via the arena and in this mode you can practice set-plays, do “n vs. x” (i.e. 5-on-5) training matches or improve your finishing in 1-vs-1’s against the goalie."

Wep - "Has the messaging system with the front office been tweaked? If yes, how so?"

MK - "Overall there have been several improvements to get the information to the user in an easier and quicker way. In terms of the information you receive from the Board, you will have a summary right on the new Manager Mode HUB screen. This HUB screen acts as a desktop to provide you with the most important pieces of information at a glance. It will show, i.e. the latest table, activities on the transfer market and the before mentioned Board Summary. As the Board Confidence will play a crucial role and change very dynamic, you will get an update on Board Confidence after every game."

"The incoming message system has one major change that goes in-line with the overall attempt to make navigation more user friendly. For all emails you receive that require a decision, you will have a direct link to the place where you can make this decision, i.e. when you have a failed negotiation you can re-negotiate with that player on the spot rather than having to remember to go to the “Negotiation History” once you’re back in the HUB."

Wep - "Can you edit kit numbers?"

MK - "Big “YES”. We’ve added a screen where you can re-assign kit numbers manually at any point."

Wep - "Is updating your office (ie keepers, strikers, tickets etc ) different?"

MK - "We’ve made minor tweaks here and especially tuned the impact of coaches on player fatigue. We thought that on lower staff levels players got tired way too fast, so we’ve reduced the impact that coaches have on the recovery rate to avoid having to rotate your squad after every 2-3 matches."

Wep - "What exactly do you guys mean about a total football experience. Crowd into it more? Banners, flags, scarves etc?"

MK - "For Manager Mode it means that we wanted to remove everything that takes you out of the immersion of living as a manager in a authentic football world. Let me give you some examples, i.e. C. Ronaldo transferring to Aalborg = not total football, Wigan beating Manchester United 5-0 = not total football, playing in Sunny / Dry weather in the EPL, every week, no matter what time of the year = not total football…. To achieve this we reworked the fundamentals this mode is based on, we work towards avoiding these unrealistic events from happening and replaced them with more football authentic events. In the end we’re aiming to create a game mode that contributes to the overall “Total Football Experience” FIFA 10 will deliver via all its features."

****Edited into this post. These are questions that have been asked in this very thread and have since been answered by Marcel****

Here's Round #2 for you all to enjoy. Again, SUPER SPECIAL THANKS for Marcel for all his hard work!

...dissapointing that he (Marcel) didnt confirm, the addition of "banners, scarves, flags." The real problem with manager mode was it was plain boring

- "Details regarding the presentation changes will be released at a later time. But I can tell you already that the different weather conditions in Manager Mode, including my favorite “Rainy night for mid-week cup games”, look amazing!"

"We’re aware that the emotional involvement within Manager Mode was lacking a bit in the past. We’ve started several initiatives to mitigate that problem and to create an immersive game mode, i.e. club branded screens, transfer rumors, CPU squad rotation and more depth in the sim engine that allows you to out-coach the opponent. Would love to hear from the users what they’d like to see in the future in order to make the Manager Mode even more exciting."

Will player morale play a larger role in this year's game? Like if a guy doesn't feel like he's getting the proper playing time he will actually demand a transfer and keeping him in the team might screw with team chemistry. The morale meter is always there but it never seems to affect anything.

"Morale is not a concept that has been expanded on in FIFA 10. We’ve introduced Form and revamped Player Growth, these two features will have a big impact on the players and the way the user selects his squad."

"Players that are not getting any playing time will slowly see their form decline and as a result their attributes will suffer. Therefore the user has to make sure to rotate his squad at the right time and for the right amount."

"Playing time will also play a role in determining how fast a player grows, therefore it is always important to give young players with a high potential a chance to develop by giving them plenty of playing time."

And how about more players in the 33+ range maybe randomly retiring sometimes before the end of their contract?

"As far as I know older players randomly chose the point when to retire, if there is a specific issue with this let us know and we’ll try to address it. The reasoning behind playing until the end of the season/contract before retiring is to allow the user to plan accordingly and look for a replacement."

Also, is there a difference playing a rival team, then there is playing a normal team.

- "There are several differences in the atmosphere of rival games, which is conveyed mainly via audio. There are rivalry specific commentary intros and the crowd is hyped up, in addition goals will be celebrated more frantic."

In MM, how many seasons are you able to play??

- "We’re aiming to have the Manager Mode last for 15 seasons. With the amount of new features, new logic and tweaks we’re adding this year, it is a big challenge to get everything balanced and tested properly. But at the moment we’re tracking well to reach 15 seasons again, if anything changes we will let you all know."

Can we manage International teams? or just clubs? and also do we get approached by bigger clubs if we are doing well in the season?

"Just clubs, we’ve looked hard and long at the this feature. But we had to cut it early on, as we had to admit that the amount of work that needed to be done to make the Manager Mode fundamentals work has to take priority over new features. Personally I still like this feature a lot and we might try to include it in future FIFA’s."

Any news on how long we have to wait until we find out if we have had our transfer bid accepted or do we still need to wait until after the next game?

- "The club and player you are negotiating with will still be taking a week to get back to you. That being said, we’ve removed the restriction of “Available bids”, so as long as your club and wage budget allows you to negotiate with additional players you will be free to do so. Also we’ve added a new feature where, after you successfully negotiated with a player, you don’t automatically sign him. You as the Manager still have to approve the transfer. This allows you to negotiate with multiple players on the same position and if they all accept your offer, you can individually accept or decline their transfer requests."

Did he say anything about loans? And what about getting sacked and having to search for work, or can we sadly pick any team we want after each season?

- "We didn’t have too much time to work on loans, it’s something that we will have a closer look for coming FIFA’s. The initial choice of club is free, with the trade-off being that higher rated clubs expect silverware and you won’t have the option to lose too many games. These clubs will fire you at the first sign of failure. Once you’re fired you are on your own, your reputation will take a bit hit and the few new clubs that will offer you a job will make their decision based on your reputation."

...did he give you any info about the time in-game spent in the menu? Or it always passes directly to the day of the game? I hated that for transfers.

- "The Manager Mode will still have a match-to-match rhythm, that being said we’ve added friendly matches to allow you for some more time to fine-tune your club at the beginning of the season and to negotiate with potential new signings."

A MAJOR thanks goes out to Marcel for his very thorough answers to some key MM questions. Please post feedback as I am interested in what you guys think, and I know the dev team will be also.

Here's a link to FIFA Soccer Blog's "Exclusive" MM Q & A Session. (Not to nit pick, but you guys got got the REAL exclusive from me )

http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/fifa-10-sony-playstation-3-microsoft-xbox-360/781245-fifa10-emirates-dave797-gameplay-review.html

Ok before I start just a few things about what I can talk about and what I experienced at the event so you’re all up to date.

-I only played the 6 week old build
-We played on the XBOX360 version only
-I can only talk about gameplay, no leagues, stats, modes etc
-The demo build was there but I can’t comment on it

Now on to the good stuff

Game Speed
A big issue for a lot of people is game speed and for me on the build we played it was perfect. The first few matches I played were on the “Normal” setting and it felt great. There was time in midfield to pass and build up play, I could slow the game down if I wanted and speed it up for incisive break a ways. Me and Tom then tried out the “Slow” setting. I didn’t like this as much it felt a little too slow for me personally but was still much better than 09. But for those who like it really slow you’ll have no issues this year.

Weather
If the weather was poor in Fifa09 then the weather in Fifa10 is nothing short of spectacular. For each stadium you can now choose between Day, Night and Overcast You can also change the conditions to either Dry, Rainy or Snowy!! Now where do I start with snow? It’s FANTASTIC, the pitch is frozen, snow is clearly falling from all camera angles and you can see the players breath it’s honestly brilliant. But Rainy is quite brilliant also, you see splash puddles from players feet when they run and slide tackle and (you’ll love this) me and Tom set a match to Rainy and kicked off, but it wasn’t raining?? We thought “oh a glitch perhaps?” but 30 mins in it bucketed down with rain..........stunned silence!

360 Dribbling
I personally loved 360 dribbling it doesn’t smash you in the face and say “here I am look at me!” It just blends with the whole game to the point where you don’t even notice it anymore. Everything is so much more fluid now and players really feel like they move and react naturally. Now sprinting with 360 some are worried about but don’t! It’s not full 360 when you sprint that’s correct but it’s not 8 directional either I’d say it’s about 16 directions. But it works really well because at full speed no one can run in circles or dance around in real life anyway. When sprinting at top speed you have to bend your runs away from the defender gradually not in sharp drastic movements, it feels really nice.

Skilled Dribble
It’s probably my favourite new element from the play test. Dive in at your peril guys because Messi and Co will tear you apart. You can jink your runs, cut inside, take on the full back and actually beat a man which is pretty much unheard of in 09. But that’s not to say it’s an all powerful super button, if you don’t time it right or dally on the ball the defenders will swallow you up no problem. It’s going to be a real art to master this year when using it yourself and trying to defend agaisnt it. I also found this useful with players like Xavi and Iniesta to create space in midfield, the small players will not be overlooked this year for sure.

Shooting
Once again a huge improvement from 09, the shooting is much heavier now and you can really drive the ball at goal rather than tapping shoot and it going into row Z. For instance I scored a cracking goal with Werder Bremen where I drilled a shot from 20 yards in to the bottom corner of the net. Volleys are also much better Mills scored a great goal with Carew where he chested down in the box and smashed a volley in. Overall shooting is great!

Player Animations
The player animations are great this year, there are so many more you notice as you play multiple games of Fifa10, the way the players sprint, change direction, jump, fall, slide are all great and their off the ball in game animations are even better. Example! I was Italy and cut in from the left and curled a shot towards the far post which clipped the edge of the post and went out for a goal kick. Di Natale (in game) drops to his knees looks the heavens and prays!...........Open mouths all round!

Jockeying/Jostling
This year instead of one default jockey animation there are now about 3 or 4 I noticed, it all depends on the defenders angle and position to how they jockey. And you must time your tackles now, no more holding pressure and the AI tackling for you. In fact after 3 or 4 games I noticed I was barley using pressure as it was pretty much in-affective. The jostling is great this year when players collide it’s really realistic, you no longer feel cheated when someone shoves you off the ball as it entirely depends on the individual situation as to who wins possession. Also some of the tackles are brutal, there were a few incidents where you wince at the ferocity the players show, when they go through someone boy do they go through someone It looks and feels great though and the refereeing is infinitely more clever and responsive this year.

Right that’s it hope you enjoyed it feel free to ask any gameplay related questions. Remember this was the 6 week old build we played and is not representative of the Demo that will be in Cologne!

http://fifasoccerblog.com/blog/my-fifa-10-twitter-updates/#more-2255

HELLO LONDON; I made it. Forgot to say, I can send messages to Twitter but can’t see the page - so I can’t answer any questions! Sorry!

Okay, first game over. Burnley v Man City. I can beat a man, and I can WHACK a shot. Very happy. More after the next game!

So much more responsive, and even more so when you use the slow dribbling - which is great.

Old build has 360 slow dribbling but not 360 degree sprinting which is disappointing but I’m told this will probably change.

Can’t describe the feeling of beating a man and scoring a hard, dipping into the back of a rippling net. Much more refined game.

Response times when you sprint in this build are a bit iffy, ran the ball out of play three times in three games so far, but should be fixed.

New commentary is great, seems to be more specific lines now. Messi’s face is also spot on, as are others, faces are better all-round.

75 minutes in and in the game opposite me, Dani Alves of Barca is knackered from being sprinted all game. Stamina is much more realistic.

Cross-field balls still a bit floaty in this build but hopefully that’ll be worked on because you can actually hit driven crosses by the box.

New line-up screen features the kits of the team - sounds like a little thing but it makes the game look so much more like a real match.

New scoreboard features the colour of the team behind their section of the score, another little thing but really nice touch.

Goalkeepers have had so much work, they can really stretch to fingertip the ball away - without being superhuman. But…

…in this build they make some really realistic-looking errors, and some shocking ones too - Cech has just palmed the ball into his own net!

Just testing the AI… So much better, when a player muscles the ball off you you can ‘believe’ it. It’s not like it’s ‘cheating’.

Snow match going on next to us, just conceded because of its awesomeness. Absolutely brill weather effects.

So many more OH! moments which is something FIFA 09 was missing with the floaty shots etc… The more you play it the more you appreciate it.

In this build the AI CPU on Pro has ran into the keeper when they should have scored a few times, hopefully that will improve.

WHAT A GOAL! Tim7 takes the free-kick ON THE FLOOR at pace, FLIES into the corner! Four grown men shout and make a fool of themselves. Worth it.

Overall CPU AI is a lot better, more challenging without so much of the ‘cheating’. This day is going to end way too soon.

Playing the later build now, seeing all kinds of shots; the ball physics are just spot on. Such a refined game. Less cut-scenes is great too.

Had a few issues where the player runs up to the ball and starts tiptoeing , ala FIFA 09, but I’m assured that will be looked at.

CRACKER! MJSmith2k skins a defender, fake-shots and SLAMS it in. This is what FIFA has been missing. Stunner.

Tried fully assisted, seems harder. Only scored one goal - the game can be played slowly and it’s a LOT more tactical.

Button-mashing doesn’t yield the same results. Tackling isn’t a case of holding down the pressure button, it requires much more timing.

Through-balls are nowhere near as effective as before, requires an actual opportunity rather than just hammering it and getting a chance.

Goalkeepers are improved in the newer build, less stupid mistakes - cross-field balls still a bit floaty but still time for that to be fixed.

Looks like our time with the game is over. That’s all the updates I’ll be sorting today, stay tuned for a podcast over the weekend!

At this point I posted an end-of-day review. The following tweets are lumped together to make reading them easier!

Well I’m on the train for 3 hours now so I may as well type out some final thoughts over a few million tweets… None of us wanted to leave.

It’s just such a polished game. That’s the main selling point - all the old niggles have gone and when you factor in the ball physics you get all the passion that some people might say has been missing. Scorching goals, fingertip saves and more. Some stuff I forgot to mention; we played as lower league Spanish teams (which were present, no English ones) and WOW. They were done properly. Different game. Also, when you get a good player, you can murder the opposition with your movement. As Barca Eto’o was a nightmare for the opposition BUT not to the point where it feels like an exploit. That’s one of the strongest feelings I got from today; everything you see is BELIEVABLE.

Players can knock you off the ball, but only players who would be capable, and only in the right situation. It all looks so real. There was never an instance where I said ‘that’s ridiculous’ - things only ever happened when appropriate. That’s the biggest change by far.

Also, we tried assisted for a laugh, and get this - they’ve made it harder. Assisted shots miss the target most of the time! Result! Can you ping-pong passes? Well some have said you can’t - in my experience you can, BUT it’s the defenders who have improved. After a few pings around the field a defender (always better positioned by the way) will stick a foot out and knock it away. Speaking of which you get some wicked deflections, and some amazing reflex saves.

http://fifasoccerblog.com/blog/the-fsb-fifa-10-next-gen-preview/

Finally, the NDA has been lifted and we can tell the world what we thought of our time with the game. We’ve been leading up to it and getting excited about it on the forums for weeks, so without further ado we present to you our FIFA 10 preview.

They say it’s lonely at the top, but given the success of FIFA 09 I doubt the development team feel that way. FIFA 09 was the first true football simulation of this generation and its critical acclaim even managed to sway some of the PES faithful to “the dark side”. But with success comes expectation, and whispers from Japan of Konami upping their game have made sure nobody gets complacent.

Just over a month ago we were treated to a very early preview of FIFA 10 at a press event held at the Emirates Stadium in London, England. It marked a significant change in strategy by EA as FIFA was being shown earlier in its development than ever before. What we saw and tried at the Emirates was a very promising start; it was clear that the developers had set their objectives and were well on their way to achieving what they wanted with the game. The main focus was gameplay, as it was last year - focusing on refining the engine as well as innovation. EA have made it their mission statement to listen to the fans of the game in order to refine it year on year, and now we are reaping the benefits of this strategy as much as they are.

Fast forward five weeks and we are in Vancouver, Canada (EA’s home turf). With an anticipated release date over four months away, the build we played was said to be 60-70% complete. Both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 incarnations of the game were present, but having spent more time playing FIFA on the Xbox 360 this year I decided to start there. After all there was also an old score to settle with a certain Xbox 360 player; Wepeeler. So all the excitement builds up to this… Pad in hand, FIFA 10, Liverpool versus Roma.

The first thing you notice is one of the key features of FIFA 10, the 360° dribbling system (something I had mentioned a year earlier). It takes getting used to but after the initial frustration and a few games of adapting, you begin to realise how much of an impact this has on the game. Gone are the feelings of limited movement and predictable running patterns, as defending truly becomes an art. You have to master it, or prepare to be destroyed. Within seconds you can spot a gap in the defence, dart towards it and switch the ball to your player’s stronger foot with a simple tap of the analog stick. This involves one of the new features, skilled dribbling - combined with a highly skilled dribbler this is one of those moments that makes your jaw drop. Not only does it allow you to quickly lose a defender, but when playing against defensive sides that pack the area you can now get that extra yard to unleash a shot.

The most important part of football is passing (depending on which managers you listen to), and fundamental to the success of a football game. FIFA 10 manages to improve on last year’s version with subtle changes to the ball physics and halving the time it takes for the ball to travel across the surface. These all make for a much more fluid experience. Many of my opponents used to complain about my ping-pong style passing game in FIFA 09; well, they will be pleased to know that passing in next year’s version is much more realistic. Seamless passing play in the style of an Arsenal or Barcelona team can only be achieved by those who master the game. Further conversations with the producers highlighted this change but this is something we can’t shed too much light on at this moment in time.

So now we move onto the bit I think most people have complained about. When it comes to shooting in FIFA 09, more than a few people have described it as “floaty”. Rest assured that shooting has been significantly improved, with the team focused on tweaking the shooting parameters and factoring in laws of physics such as the Reynard and Magnus effects - I have no idea what they are but to put it simply, the ball feels less like a balloon and more like a football now.

Another area that caused complaints in the previous game was goalkeeping. Goalkeeping AI and logic is a nightmare for most developers, but one of the biggest improvements we saw in Canada was in the goalkeepers. The difference is night and day when compared to FIFA 09, because now they are more urgent, aggressive and much more responsive when their goal is in danger. They rush off their line to narrow the angles, and jump on corners to punch clear any crosses that can’t be caught. What most impressed me was that they also make some superb saves that will have you berating the opposition goalie. In one of the games we played, Chelsea versus Liverpool, Drogba was through on goal only for Reina to come rushing out and tackle Drogba quite hard outside the area, picking up a yellow card for his troubles. It’s definitely going to be more difficult to score now, which is fine by us - in the games we played, every goal meant something.

After a few hours of playing, more and more kept coming out of the game. We began to notice huge improvements to the AI and logic in-game with the new urgency logic determining the threat level of the play, keeping players at ease when the threat is low or making them stretch when things are getting dangerous. The AI is also much more aware of the threat of space - players will watch the runs of the opponent as well as any gaps opening up in the defence, plugging them up as necessary. Defensive awareness is at a whole new level, as the system is much more balanced and attacking players will drop to cover for defenders when they have made forward runs. For Liverpool, Mascherano did a wonderful job of covering when Arbeloa decided to get in on the attacking play. The attacking awareness of AI controlled players has clearly improved as they no longer make straight-line runs that provide no options, with players now making diagonal or curved runs looking to stay onside and run into space. On occasions you can seem them begin to run then stop to stay in line with the defence. It’s a joy to watch.

Speaking of defending, there’s a few of us on the team here who would like to build from the back in FIFA, but find it impossible. What we played provided a brilliant challenge for those who like to play defensively, with the new urgency logic providing some fantastic last ditch challenges and clearances. We even saw defenders jumping in front of shots and diving towards loose balls in the area.

Another common complaint with FIFA 09 was the refereeing that often frustrated you to the point of controller destruction. Refereeing decisions seemed much more consistent than before, with one thing in-particular sure to please a lot of people; the advantage rule is now much more accurate, with the referee letting play go on and only bringing it back when necessary. Scripted sequences for fouls and carding have been taken out of the game in order to make the game a much more fluid experience and stop people hammering the buttons to skip the same sequences you’ve seen a hundred times before. As a result you now have the option to take quick free-kicks, so taking your eyes away from the TV can have disastrous consequences.

Overall the graphics in the build we were treated to were pretty solid, and a little sharper than last year. It’s worth noting that graphical touches are usually one of the last things to go into FIFA games, although saying that player sizes appeared to have been reduced by about 10% in order to make the pitch larger. Also, animations have been improved, making player movements and collisions look much more true to life. The collision system that was introduced last year has also been overhauled in order to make the action look more realistic again.

In my personal opinion the PS3 version of FIFA 09 wasn’t quite as sharp as the Xbox 360 version, but I’m pleased to say that the FIFA 10 builds we tested appeared identical.

Manager Mode has seen a ridiculous amount of attention this year, which a certain MM nut on the FSB team is ecstatic about. We’ve been told that many of the complaints that MM players used to voice have been addressed and it’s sure to be a much more immersive experience this season. Unfortunately we didn’t get the opportunity to test it for ourselves during the community day because gameplay was the focus of the event, but we will be giving it a run for its money in the near future.

There are many features that will be present in the final game that we have not experienced, with many of them due to be unveiled in the coming weeks and months. We would love to talk about these things but being under NDAs all we can talk about for now are gameplay enhancements to the game. What we will say is this; earlier in the week we said that FIFA 10 was in safe hands and having met the development team many times over the last few years, the more time you spend talking with them about the little details of the game, the more you realise how much passion they have for the sport and how much they want to achieve perfection.

FIFA 10 is running smoothly towards an autumn release and although the build we’ve played is months away from completion, it has still managed to totally ruin FIFA 09 for us. As with all the best football games, you can’t go back once you’ve played this. It’s going to be a long, horrible summer…

http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/fifa-10-sony-playstation-3-microsoft-xbox-360/770676-re-posted-i-visited-ea-sports-vancouver-played-fifa-10-a.html

So, just thought I’d post about my visit to EA Sports Vancouver on July 31st and playing (one of the latest builds of) FIFA 10 with Dave Rutter and a few others.

First of all, their base in Vancouver is really cool – basketball arena, gymnasium, beach volleyball courts and soccer pitch outside… dream work place!! Inside, on route to the FIFA section, I was quickly ushered away from one or two walls of brainstorming ideas for what I believe to be the top-secret feature for FIFA 10!! Grrr...

In the FIFA section, Dave introduced me to all the guys in the different departments in the FIFA production team, some of whom know me from these forums as the “daffy duck guy”, as they couldn’t pronounce my name!! From here on, I won’t be as harsh on EA Sports as I have been as they are dead sound. I also met Christophe, Online Producer, as well as Mick, another from the online dept… more to come from him and the online side of things shortly.

Main pointers (some of these may already be known, but I’ll mention them as the key most features either way):

Playability

* Much more freedom and flexibility with player movement and ball control, courtesy of the new 360 degree control)
* Ball and player momentum/physics improved (for example, players will almost lose balance when keeping up with an opponent at full speed should they stop, turn and turn back again in the initial direction – the chasing player literally has their centre of balance/gravity all hinged into their big toe pinned into the ground and trying to get other leg below waist height!!)
* Default game speed slightly slower than FIFA 09 (faster than 08 ) meaning you get slightly more time on the ball for build-up in midfield, allowing for better implementation of tactics and defenders getting back appropriately, making it harder for persistent exploiting of defence to attack tactics (as was too often the case in FIFA 09 where midfield-less 5-0-5 formations were and still are rampant as well as unrealistically successful)
* Set-piece creation and training modes now in next-gen versions of the game
* You can change set-piece takers, and take quick ones too
* Controller rumble is in (when hitting the post and when being involved in a decisive penalty kick)
* Main FIFA 09 glitches fixed (kick-off goal, goalkeeper hogging the ball, etc.)

Presentation

* Game play graphics look great from afar (i.e. player models, shadows, lighting effects on tele/default camera)
* Nets much more realistic
* Menus, buttons and navigation much improved

Online

* Ranked quitters punished by heavier points deduction
* Ranked boosting to become meaningless as re-matching means less points up for grabs in 2nd match (about half of what was available in the 1st match), followed by almost nothing in the 3rd and/or 4th rematch
* Extra time and/or penalty shoot-outs optional, can be agreed on between players after 90mins/extra time (if not pre-game, which would be better and fairer)
* Game speed optional between players – can be changed/filtered in game create session/searches
* Custom set-pieces will be enabled in online play, HOWEVER if anyone’s custom set piece is found out to have an almost 100% success efficiency because of a glitch or anything likewise that may be regarded as unsavoury, they will be immediately disabled for an indefinite time.
* Search filter in place where you can search for an opponent with (for example) a 2* team as their default team

... that's about all I can think off ... very hard to take everything in when you're enjoying playing the game and the lads are giving you the low down!! And the games... me using Man United (minus Ronaldo and Tevez) and I drew with Dave Rutter (Real Madrid) 1-1 (his equalizer came from my goalkeeper running back across the line with the ball in hands, CHEATER!! Dave went straight to his scribbly bug-notebook, and then the clip-on-the-ear-book!). Rematching, I lost 1-3 to Mike from the online department and using same teams again, I beat one of the chief guys in EA Sports 3-0

If there's anything else you think I might have missed or you think I might have noticed but have forgotten to mention, let me know!!

6. "Set Piece Editor observations from EuroGamer (swipe)"

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/fifa-10-july-hands-on?page=1

"So that was why you could only turn 45 degrees," FIFA producer Dave Rutter tells me, brow furrowed, while sliding two mobile phones around a table. He's trying to explain - aided by whatever was in his pockets - how the animation system had to change to accommodate the introduction of 360-degree control.

"It was a limit in our own animation engine, so we rewrote all of it for this year. When we say we're going to do something we do it," he adds, somewhat unnecessarily. But this sums up the mentality of the FIFA team. Desperate to impress, reeling off figures, bullet points, feature lists, improvements almost apologetically, in the hope that we'll like their game a little bit more this year.

Dave, old chap, do calm down. We love FIFA 09. It's the best footy game of this generation. Not that you'd think so listening to the man in charge. "It's horrid," he cries, describing his experience of going back to it from FIFA 10. "If you play it and you go back, it's horrid." I did. It really isn't.

But, yes, what he's getting at of course is: when you first play FIFA 10, 360-degree control may not smack you around the face with a stick of obvious. It's only when you go back that you notice. "It's like getting a good haircut," Rutter suggests. I wouldn't know. "If people haven't noticed, great."

Anyway, back to FIFA 09 slamming. What else wasn't good enough, Dave? Manager Mode, set-pieces, lofted through balls, goalkeepers and more, apparently. There's a serious point here. Having overtaken PES in both critical and sales success, the biggest threat to the continuation of FIFA's hegemony is complacency. You can argue that complacency is what's done for PES so far this generation. But there's not a shred of it in evidence here; nor cockiness; nor arrogance. Just a desire, tinged with possibly hard-wired paranoia, to be better.

This is Eurogamer's second kickabout with FIFA 10, having been treated to a practice match at the Emirates a few months back. The code is more advanced now, naturally (75 per cent complete), but most notably there's a New Feature Announcement: Create A Set-Piece, an editor that allows you, amazingly enough, to design your own free-kicks and corners for use in-game.

The inspiration for this, apparently, came from Tomas Brolin's sneaky goal for Sweden against Romania in the quarter-final of the 1994 World Cup. Sweden's move was straight from the training ground. But it was impossible to replicate in FIFA 09. So they've built an editor to do just that and more.

Accessed in the current build by hitting the back button during the pre-match practice sequence, the editor splits the final third of the pitch into a number of square zones, covering the corners, and the outskirts of the 18-yard area. You can create set-pieces for each zone (up to four), with a maximum of 32 that can be saved to your profile.

It works like this. Highlight a player you want to move with the right stick, hit record, and then manoeuvre him in real-time exactly where you want him to go during the move. His motion is tracked by a thick bluey-white line as a visual aid. You can repeat this with as many players as you like, slowly building up the set-piece to your exact specifications. All the while you can test it out against an AI defence at the push of a button, easily delete and re-record anything that's wrong, then save it to the d-pad for easy access in-game.

You can, of course, still take free kicks the regular way, but for the perfectionist, the tools are now in place to create elaborate works of choreography. Or, as I discovered within moments of trying it out, a giant white-line pair-of-testicles-and-penis shape in the penalty area (two players performing a mirrored semi-circle then parallel charging towards goal. Completely ineffective, but delightfully immature).

"Well done. I applaud your creativity," Rutter deadpans at my creative flourish. Well, he brought up nob-drawing in his presentation, I suggest. "I said you could draw funny pictures, I didn't say that!" Nevertheless, it's official: FIFA 10 lets you draw massive nobs. I digress.

Sadly, it's looking unlikely you'll be able to unleash your set-pieces against the real world. "Will we let people use them online? I'll be open about that, it's up in the air at the moment," he concedes. " custom team tactics last year, we didn't anticipate the levels to which some individuals would go to exploit the systems. I think I was probably a little naïve about some of our fans. And I'm not so naïve now. So I don't want people to exploit this feature and then ruin the game for the vast majority." Exchanging set-piece data with friends, meanwhile, is completely ruled out for this season.

That's the surprise out of the way. Now, having previously been promised improvements to Manager Mode, some details. It's the "most popular mode outside of exhibition," says Rutter, but last year was "marred by a number of authenticity issues and wasn't particularly engaging". More bashing. Take that, FIFA 09! Moreover, in private the FIFA team will tell you the one aspect of PES they fear the most is the depth of Master League. "It's about time Manager Mode got some attention, really," Rutter notes. And so it has.

Predictably, the focus has been on improving authenticity. Transfers have been overhauled to reflect a player's "ambitions", so it's no longer just a case of the bigger and richer the club, the more attractive. If a team's already cheek-by-jowl with midfielders, it's harder to buy another, however much cash there is to throw around.

Additionally, AI matches are resolved on a per-player basis for greater realism, and player development has been tweaked, so precocious youngsters aren't guaranteed stardom "just because they play for Man United". Elsewhere, you can now get a game of five-a-side going in practice mode, which is now also multiplayer should you wish to share in such fleeting larks. No loading, no fuss.

And if you're wondering about Ultimate Team, well, carry on wondering. "Not talking about it at all," insists Rutter. And then proceeds to do just that, adding: "What I will say is we were very pleased with the success of Ultimate Team this year". It'll be back, then.

The final pieces of the FIFA 10 puzzle will be revealed at Gamescom next month. "Everything will come out in Cologne. An all-singing, all-dancing FIFA show." A figure of speech rather than a new feature hint, one hopes. Which leaves time to reflect on the latest build with a few quick matches.

Rutter's right about 360-degree control. Having the full range of movement at your disposal is subtle, yes, but offers a distinct, refreshing sense of liberty. Which, yes, only truly becomes apparent when I return to 09. Critically, it just feels right. And the bulletpoint "freedom in physical play" the game is said to offer evolves from this. The ball, as Rutter explains, is "never 100 per cent under the player's control". And with players now darting in literally from all angles, it's now possible simply to take it off the player without even tackling if timed correctly.

Other changes are harder to gauge over a short playtest. Finesse shots seem tougher to pull off, and the refs are needlessly punitive, with far too many questionable fouls disrupting play. "Refs aren't fully figured out yet," Rutter reckons. Nor yet are the players, all of whom are currently undergoing final tweaking and balancing.

Berbatov, for instance, is slower in FIFA 10 than last season's game, after his impeccable turn as the can't-be-arsed striker. Ronaldo, meanwhile, is still with Man United in this build, though his greedy Judas bags are doubtless being packed by EA Canada coders as I type.

I am also delighted to report that the absurd, irritating and completely unnecessary spectacle of that monstrous EA Sports logo that exposed itself like a corporate flasher during every replay has also been toned down considerably. "There is a lot of that that goes on at EA," Rutter nods, with as much diplomacy as he can muster. "It's a little bit more tasteful."

Right now, FIFA 10 is solid, smooth, satisfying and scoring in all the right areas: an already stellar experience getting a smart makeover in all the right areas, with appetising new features and the promise of more to come in Cologne. I'm excited. Even if Dave will probably hate it this time next year.

it'll be interesting to see how effective these changes are.

the main one left is replicating individual player styles into the game. cause everyone sorta plays the same

Messi's long dribbles
Ronaldo's tricks
Gerrards tendency to go for screamers
etc

that may be kinda difficult though

sounds like they are taking the first steps in trying to merge an FM-style manager mode with a console game. could be interesting.

something i didn't see, though i didn't read through everything, was stadium improvements during manager mode. BW and i talked about this -- i think -- and i found it quite frustrating that my dinky little stadium was still being loaded up after i had a level 9 stadium purchased. there should be some upscaling there.

didn't ruin the experience, but definitely detracted from the immersiveness of MM.

still, fifa is making big strides...if they can make the game actually feel like football one of these years instead of like a bunch of robots swimming in jello chasing a ball on a string, they might knock PES off the perch

new ones: Bernabeu (DLC) (R. Madrid), Chamartin (Old R. Madrid), Court Lane (generic?) and Arena D'Oro (generic)

EA half assed it here imo...i'd like to see the following
Ibrox
Celtic Park
Villa Park
Craven Cottage
White Hart Lane
COMS
Qwest Field (make it XBLA free DLC)
a few World Cup stadiums (hell they made Cowboys Stadium inch perfect from blueprints)

and Newcastle's stadium shouldnt be in it anymore.

That is a paltry list of new stadiums.

No Villa Park = major fail.

And as you say, St.James' Park should nowhere near this game, not at the expense of other more deserving stadiums at least.

Along with Villa Park, some of the other older, more traditional British grounds should be in there such as Goodison Park, Craven Cottage etc.

The seemingly random smattering of world stadiums in this game is it's only major negative for me. They really need to sort it out. Get a team working on just churning out more stadiums so they can be as comprehensive as the rest of the game is.

As you said, EA half assed it.

Will still be copping it tho.

*sigh*

I'm not impressed and I'm hoping the final build is much better.

At its core, FIFA is largely still breakaway ball, except this time, the through pass has been absolutely nerfed to where I really dont see the use of it so far. In 09, I enjoyed spraying defense splitting balls about the field (think Kaka v Liverpool in the CL Final). On the flipside, I also enjoyed patient buildup that'd result in a clinical destruction of the defense.

I almost want to say it was because I played with Barca mainly, whereas I usually never play with them. The technical ability of their midfielders is vastly outweighed by their feathery build. Also because I feel FIFA doesnt place enough emphasis on the midfield for a 4-3-3 to be viable in the game, but thats just a personal preference.

It also seems like the players move even faster than 09, if thats possible. I will say credit to them for beefing up the AI and player awareness. A lot of shit that was abusable in 09 isnt really abusable anymore.

On 360 dribbling, it really seems inconsequential other than the odd quick deke here and there. I guess I'll have to play with that a bit more.

Oh, and all that BS about improved goalkeeping is a fucking lie. I watched Valdes get beat a few times by some of the dumbest shit. Shit that would've made the 09 goalies look like ninjas. Were it an MM or online game, my controller would've been in pieces.

i'm warming up to it a bit more.

patience is rewarded in this game as well as lightning quick counter attacks. pulled off a few brilliant goals that are more reminiscent of my play style.

and i'm liking the new dribble mechanics. pulled off a sick goal w/ Ibra where i had Messi dance out of a double team and then bridge another defender before slipping Ibra in for a chip.

i dont like how aggressive keepers are. they charge way too early for my liking and dont chase back on chips as advertised...well Valdes doesnt.

players get knocked off the ball a bit too easily for my liking compared to 09. but i really like the momentum based focus.

i have PES downloaded but i really dont feel the urge to play it and from the impressions i've seen on various forums, i'm not really missing anything.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say most of my problems were due to playing an unfamiliar system. After playing a few dozen games with Bayern, I am really liking the new gameplay style. Its a much more organic and sensible experience.

I've come to like the new throughball even though its hella harder to use. It makes for much smarter football instead of the braindead easy style of last years throughball.

Counterattacks are probably my favorite aspect of the game as they are no longer just the "outrun everyone" variety. But its more based on well placed balls in the weakspot of the defense. Had a great one today coming back off a corner where I beat a man to the outside w/ Schweinsteiger, passed it up to Klose at midfield who led Ribery with a ball down the line toward the box. Ribery chipped it up and Gomez beat the goalie to the ball in the air. It was beautiful.

Another aspect of this game i like is dropping the ball back to a surging midfielder. Scored a beauty with Ribery on one of these type passes.

The area i'm most excited for is online cause I'm fairly optimistic it isnt going to be the cheap BS it was last year. With the adjustments to how player speed works along with the new physicality system, it isnt going to be Ronaldo and Torres through-ball mania.

So while some may dread playing Real Madrid (and the like), I think you should look forward to it because theyre going to be very susceptible at the back and very lightweight in attack. I'm theorizing here of course, but you get the idea. Team weaknesses seem to be replicated very well this time and they actually matter.

My one remaining problem is player reactions. I noticed when the ball gets knocked off or deflected, my AI teammates dont react to the ball at all. I can see this being a big problem in the final game.

Its shaping up to be a top game. This shit is legit.

I have to say chelsea's fast build up style makes so much sense to the way I want to play FIFA compared to last year; the players make the "right" run more often than not. But with Barca it was just horrendous some of the positions the AI got themselves in off the ball. The speed of the faster players seems finally true while on the ball, but there were a few aerial challenges I had to turn away from (Del Piero winning a header over Yaya....really?). 90/10 on the purchase, just want to make sure the set piece editor and campaign are as true to what they say they can be before I jump in.

I've been using Juve most of the time, and have found the right way to play with them, but whenever I use Barca, the passes and runs I want them to make just aren't there. I think its gotta be the 4-3-3, but even when I changed the formation around, it wasn't flowing.

This could actually be good news since 95% of the time online you'll be playing against Real, Barca or United.

Chelsea looks unstoppable, as Drogba is a bull

this game is insanely good

only had a ps3 6 months so didnt get that deep into 09 but this blows it out of the water already

feels more like actual football now that ever before, the little things like battling for possesion and the actual physics of the ball

and its so deep, so many options and game modes to fool around with - this will keep me happy for a very long time

the servers are down at the moment so online isnt really happening but hopefully that will get sorted soon, i need the practice time anyway, i'm so bad at this at the moment

great game, seems slower than the demo, dunno whether thats just the default settings but i prefer it. its just as fluid, just not as constantly open.

overall a great improvement on a game i was worried they would ruin.

going to be spending a lot of time playing this game with mates.

I may just buy one from the UK anyway. The cover is better & I hate that the US version says "soccer" on it.

this might garner some sort of "YOU FUCKWIT" response from a certain HT mod, but i just don't want to sink money to find my "early" copy won't play on my 360.

suppose there might be an internet search function which could help me with my anxiety, but i ... meh.

edit: turns out ordering from a UK website for your US console will only result in you returning the game or modding your xbox.

didn't know if this is already in here somewhere, but it needs to be re-watched for the week warning. everytime i see this, i have to stop what i am doing and just watch. whoever came up with this commercial did an excellent job.

they actually played the full commercial this morning on sportscenter -- which figures, in a way, but i was still surprised.

In response to Reply # 0

I think the most interesting thing is that the AI actually poses a threat now...or maybe its just cause I'm starting on Legendary. I have offense down, but defense is still a work in progress.

My pet project in this game (at least offline) will be Real Madrid so a lot of what I post will be from my experiences with them. The freedom of movement in this game is beautiful to watch and its nice to actually be able to beat a man in FIFA for once.

But where the game shines is off the ball runs. If there's space in the defense, your guys haul ass to make themselves available for the ball. and if you have an attacking maestro on your team, youre going to see some simply magnificent killer balls.

The other area of note is dribbling, especially trick moves seem to be much more responsive when you attempt them. For an example, I picked up a ball on the touchline w/ Ronaldo and did 4 stepovers before going by the man and passed it in for Higuain to backheel it in. In 09, I'm almost positive I would've gotten a completely different trick move than what I wanted.

I still feel like the slide tackle is absolutely useless and can only be a negative. Free kicks are alright, takes a sec to get used to.

Something I've noticed though is that this year's game isnt newbie friendly at all. I let some of my friends play (as it stands now they refuse to play me. i'm too sick) each other for a few hours and it basically devolved into me coaching them. So beware of that when you try and introduce someone new to this game.

You just feel so much more in control of the ball and your players. The auto-switch has failed me a few times, I haven't played with all the settings yet to get it how I want it.

I'll be playing with Juve a lot this year. I lost a few games online yesterday in the second half. The players do get a lot more tired than they ever did before.

Shooting is improved even over the demo. In fact, this feels like a different game than the demo to me.

i love the flexibility of being able to move him into any game mode i choose, but the way in which stat increases are doled out seems very strange and difficult. until someone actually releases/compiles the list of what you need to do to improve your VP in certain areas, this could be very frustrating.

i preferred the ability of managing my own stat increases because it keeps my player from being a stilted version of my own deficiencies. example: i am not the best dribbler in this game. i am working on it, but i still can't seem to make the right moves. regardless, if my VP only gets rewarded with stat increases in dribbling when i successfully dribble, then i can already see my boy speedy sniper with two left feet when the ball is placed there.

the game was just released here in the states yesterday, but does anyone have a site where there is a guide for VP? will be checking gamefaqs later.

while i would like to be more in control of my players attributes, i can officially say i am hooked on VP. i didn't realize most of it was laid out in the VP menu for you to look at and understand.

it will take a while to work on those accomplishments, but i unlocked all the skill dribbles last night in the arena, so i am not some lumbering idiot out on the pitch anymore. trying to unlock all the celebrations now. gonna be a lot of exhibition matches for a while.

and by 'better' i mean 'more realistic'

and by 'more realistic' i mean no more 99-rated players going to tiny american markets for $125 mil (i got rid of two 99's in 5 years this way). also no more 99-rated players (lousy too many experience points/match!)

loved how the demo played; silky smooth, more freedom, ai seemed a *tad* better (at least on legendary), 5'5" midfielders weren't out-muscling 6'4" dmf's for the ball. good stuff

i started one but didn't get too far. was just fuckin around to see what was up. once my VP gets a bit better, i will prolly dive back into it at a lower level club.

another bug -- was playing an exhibition last night and it ended in a draw. i selected the classic style to finish the game -- two OTs and then PKs if still tied up. well, it went to PKs, and the screen moved to a PK order selection screen. X selects a player to change the order and triangle resets the order. NO OTHER BUTTONS MAPPED. couldn't get out of the screen to finish my game with PKs. not even the start button worked. it was weird. sittin there thinkin, "how do you not find this in testing?"

doesn't matter if it's BAP or MM. i don't know what the deal is, but i cannot put the ball past the keeper. i have tried finesse and chips. i have tried long range and a couple quick dribble moves. i have tried setting myself with L2. i have even monkeyed with my shooting help settings. nothing seems to work.

goalie cuts down the angle and i can't slide it past him.

anyone got some hints to share.

and if youre 1v1 w/o an angle on the keeper, dont shoot across your body. kick to whichever side you have your foot on the ball

never chip straight, always chip at an angle cause it leaves more room for error

i dont really have problems scoring. i get some crazy ass goals.

i am really digging chipping the keeper when coming in from an angle. my VP is a ST, so most of my opportunities come with a 1v1. the R1 finesse shot is coming around now as well.

i am noticing FKs are easier in this game as well. i haven't notched one yet, but the wall doesn't seem to be blocking EVERY attempt and the goalie is not as ninja like in response. my VP is starting to come around. need some more speed though.

This is my first FIFA since like...01? 02? Needless to say I'm pretty bad because the game has matured so much since.

I'm wondering what camera angle is best/used by the best players? I'm currently toggling between Tele and Dynamic V2 and I can't say I like either, its hard to tell where everyone else is on the pitch, and that map is too small to really be helpful.

BW is right though ... once you become familiar with your formation, you will start to know where your other mids are at all times and your forwards. some fun stuff with lobbed throughs and one-touch passing which is nice.

I don't know why but this year my defense is getting exposed this year. Players from the opposing side keep getting into my backfield. They're getting more breakaways. My defenders are slow as fuck. Is there a certain style I should be playing. I'm playing exhibition matches using Man U. Manchester City is killing me. Particularly Adebayo and Tevez. Suggestions anyone?

>Is there a certain style I should be playing.

if youre having trouble, i'd go w/ a 'contain' defense for now until you figure things out because a pressing defense will often pull your players out of shape and leave you in a lot of 1v1 situations w/ the attacker/defender

play Hargreaves/Rafael and Evra as the right and left backs. and Anderson+Carrick/Hargreaves in midfield.

the AI is MUCH better at passing this year so double teaming it into oblivion isnt going to work. just follow the ball

use the second defender press button and try to play the passing lane w/ the character youre controlling.
use the left trigger stabilizer as well.

if you can try and pass it out the back instead of booting it back to them.

know your players and know who's good at knocking men off the ball especially in midfield.

slidetackling is actually viable in this game so learn the timing of it. once you get better at playing the angles in this game, defending becomes much easier and attacking becomes a lot more fun.

the AI shouldnt be hard to defend, even on Legendary.

honestly what i'd do is just set it to Legendary and keep playing Brazil, Spain and England until you can beat them. 3 very unique playstyles from the powerhouses of the game.

consider your opponent's tactics
do they simply try to get to the byline and cross?
do they cut in from out wide
1 forward? 2 forwards? overlapping midfielders and wingbacks, things like that.

Let Rio and Nema pretty much stay alone unless they can clearly stop a ball in the middle of the field; use the center mids and fbs to chase, but don't pull a CB out of position if one of them gets burned.

i played a few matches yesterday and got ripped twice! like throw your controller, begging for mercy at halftime beatings.

both times were with columbus crew. i really need to stop playing ranked matches with them. their back line defense is terrible and got burned a bunch of times.

6-0 and 7-2, those were my biggest losses in the game to date. i also lost one with them on penalty shots where the shooters hit the cross bar twice and missed.

ranked is getting a lot harder now that my rank is up to 6-7. not using stupid teams just because i like them in real life would probably help, but i'm still having a good time.

I thought they were doing a more realistic league system where you have multiple competitions running at the same time (league, cup...). WTF? Makes it totally unrealistic to play the Carling Cup with a full strength squad.

And in PES there is a reason to do, it grows your younger players and adds to their ability while resting your other players from the season/Euro competition. It's just not really a realistic campaign experience which is dissapointing.

last night i was just burned out after playing for about 3 hours. and playing poorly too!

i have a hard time staying focused on defense for the entire match and usually give up one or two stupid goals. it's so frustrating because i can dominate possession and get a bunch of quality chances, then the other team runs down and scores on the counter.

almost every goal scored on me is on a counter, i can usually defuse a buildup unless the other player is really good on the ball.

I have no problem playin D...you just have to stay relaxed and not over-pursue which is what causes most of people's problems. My only issue is the auto switching...I have it at the lowest level and it will switch me at the most innoppurtube times.

As far as stupid goals go...my issue is that my stupid ass is always trying to counter and therefore instead of clearing some balls, I will try to get the ball out whch leads to a giving the ball away and an easy goal. Also, I'm still not used to the differnces between pro evo and FIFA In terms of direct balls vs through balls and havng to charge up my passes which often leads to a bunch of stupid turnovers in my midfield.

Lastly, all my years of pro evo trained me to barely tap the shoot button because it was so sensitive. I lose a ton of goals because of my Pes shooting over the net trauma.

Some things that I think would help improve your game a lot:

1) Less dribbling...I dont know if it was because you had Real Madrid and felt like you could just out-run cats.....but it really doesnt work this year. You have solid ball movement, you just become too predictable in the final third by trying to outrun people.

2) Don't gamble as much defensively. It's one thing to put pressure on with your forwards and force a mistake, but when you are guessing on slide tackles in your own third of the pitch, it's never good news lol. Use the l-trigger dummy to position yourself instead of trying to guess which way the attacker will move.

3) Take some chances offensively fam! You had me down the wings on occasion but you are dribbling for far too long and trying those ground passes. Throw some aerial crosses in and usually good shit happens...whether it be off a header or off some kinds deflection or off the clearout.

I've gotten SO much enjoyment playing against the people on my dorm floor though. I think we've logged more time on this than any game.

Offline, the game feels damn near flawless. I cant imagine what EA can do for next year.

I think my favorite thing in the game is the shotfake. Its by far the most useful of any juke move.

The breakaways are gone....but it's still pretty much impossible to react defensively and put yourself in the proper position as a defender.

Having played so many games where it's the same ole same ole....and then having played it offline and having that smoothness and instant reaction times defensively, it's like night and day imo.

i played last night and was 2-4

i usually play brazil and substitute diego and ronaldinho as the attacking midfielders

i'll score early but can't hold on to a lead

2 out of the 4 losses were ties where i gave away goals in the closing minutes

not even decent tries either, like hitting a too early on the goal kick

they should really fix that, no one ever wants to pass to that guy

but you're right, i make a great through pass and get a breakaway, only to get run down and completely thrown off the ball by the chelsea back when i cut towards the goal

the other thing i noticed is that the game seems to allow a lot more fouling in the box

i agree with brooklynwhat that the shot fake seems to work really well, and i should use that more often when i'm in scoring range to get some space

since its my area of expertise and interest.

with Brazil, youre going to be scoring the lionshare of your goals with Fabiano, Kaka and Robinho. set them up in good positions and figure out their strengths and weaknesses and apply them to your game.
i dont have much experience using Robinho or Fabiano (i have a ton against them), but for Kaka you ALWAYS want to try and get him in space. he's got incredible speed, good enough strength and a great shot. from my experience against Brazil, Robinho's got a great shot on him and Fabiano's a great holdup man in this game

master the curl shot. for me, this is the most effective way of shooting be it from distance or 1v1s.

idk how good you are at free kicks, but if youre not, go to practice mode and try and get 2 or 3 areas that youre pretty confident you can score from.

get a feel for the different types of crosses. with Brazil, you should be on the break a lot and a well placed cross can be deadly in those situations. i know of 3 different types of crosses, there may be more
1. regular (one tap of cross, hold for more distance)
2. short (two taps)
3. ground (three taps)
with all of these crosses you can either lead toward the goal, or aim toward the top of the box
I also use the RB when I cross, I'm not sure what exactly it does, but I get better results than when i dont. i think it targets a player though.

instead of the short pass to the close man, try a skip pass or a lob to someone who looks 2 or 3 passes away. it causes the defense to react more noticeably and opens up a lot of holes.

in 09, offense was fairly straight forward. 10 requires a little more cunning and guile. youre going to have to improve your vision (i find that to be another big problem for people who arent great offensively). i cant tell you how many times i've seen an opponent's player wide open that they had no clue was. try and focus more on what the players off the ball are doing. eventually you'll get to a point where you know what they are doing and you'll be able to pull off some smooth stuff.

most importantly, take your time. i think most people that suffer offensively get too impatient. pass the ball around the back. switch fields in the attacking third with the skip pass. anything to get a different look from the defense. balance patience with risk. sometimes you'll be able to force the opponent into a fuck up and reap the benefits.

In response to Reply # 149

RB modifier seems to do the "finesse" shot/pass, or makes the guy kick it off the instep. regular (no RB) seems to go off the laces.

so when you're dribbling down the line and don't have time or space to turn it back in towards the goal, RB+cross is probably going to give the best result, a nice curling cross to a teammate.

but if you can put a fake on the defender and face in towards the goal, regular cross seems to get the best results.

also, the game is a lot more fun when i'm controlling only my VP through the Be A Pro seasons. playing as the full team is great when you have friends over, but im hooked on beefing up my VP with completed accomplishments.

I will go to a low ranked team right away and if the opponent still chooses a top squad I exit out.

Some cats will pick a lower team to matchup with you, and those games are def worth the wait.

I've tried what Brooklyn said in terms of setting up custom matches but it's never been succesful in finding an opponent lol.

playing the mls teams is pretty fun imo.

you got me good in that second game, i think it was ne vs chivas. that spin move on the breakaway was great and the pass was right on the money. all i could do was watch in awe.

the third game was funny in that we traded goals in the first 10 minutes. i tend to do that a lot, i'll score and then let the opponent come right back down the field on me.

i had to go away for a while and answer some phone calls, and check nfl scores, but i saw you sent me a message. what did you mean when you said i was under seige? were you playing some kind of special strategy?

But yeh, very fun games. What I meant by under siege was in that final 30 mins or so, I think I had like 15 shots lol. I was pushin everyone forward and you got really conservative. I think I posted twice and man I thought my free kick in extra time was money when I powered it up....damn crossbar.

I'm building a smallish, quick left winger and he has just finally got called up to the 1st team for Charlton Athletic, but it is fucking great fun. Some how works really well coming off a CoD2 saturation. Only gripe is the short-side camera, that is, any player on the opposing team tracking back, you can't see, and the radar is in an inconvenient place. It's more about (as a forward) timing runs and asking for threw balls, and also being able to cut when you are dribbling at an opponent. Shit, wish I was playing now...

i cannot get down with the number of games you need to play. i find the grind of actually getting through a full season -- BAP or MM -- really tough. i want to improve my pro, but damn, one season feels like a fucking lifetime.

to that end, i don't understand why, when you initially get called up to the 1st team, you start right away. in EVERY game. that's dumb. you should have some time on the bench where you come on as a sub. if you impress there, you can get some spot starts in cup matches or in games against lesser opponents. you shouldn't be starting every game. it isn't realistic.

plus, there could be a handful of games where you aren't even used. if they are trying to make the game more real, then they need to take this into account.

that said, i can only play BAP as a Striker right now. if i am in the midfield, i lose a lot of points for positioning. i get caught up in the attack and then my teammates lose the ball and i get fucked.

when did sports games become such a grind?

i havent tested any of them out yet though. i plan to however

169. "need help puttin away crosses"
In response to Reply # 0
Tue Dec-15-09 03:11 PM by Drizzit

over time, i have pretty much abandoned wing play because i cannot put away crosses to save my life. my attempts at heading always go sailing over the bar or WAY off the mark. i know i am not overpowering as i tap once the ball nears the head, but am i doing it wrong?

do double-O crosses work better? a lot of it revolves around your target's abilities, i know, but i have had some CLEAR CUT chances go up in smoke for what seems like no reason.

any help out there?

sometimes you'll find that you actually have enough time to bring it down to your feet and shoot.

just a guess, i think you might be hitting shoot too soon and you end up heading under the ball. the longer you wait to hit shoot, they'll approach it in a different way and have a different angle on it.

most of the time i dont bother with the cross. i trust my cutting in a lot more because of the players I have.

malbranque/reid provide better crossing than they do cutting, but i have been frustrated by the results of the crossing. i switched over to a custom narrow diamond and really work the middle of the field with quick passing and counter-attacks, so crossing has fallen by the wayside. i think i need to bring it back in as i have found more room on the wings when attacking a certain way ... just haven't been able to finish.

1) The pace has just gotten ridiculously fast at the higher levels. I'm at level 21 and there isn't any slow or creative buildup...at all. It's mainly quick balls proceeded by someone trying to blow by you with a good striker....it's just ridiculously fast. I just had a 7-4 game where I was on the winnin end with Aston villa but it just wasn't fun.

2) The off the ball defensive AI needs to be improved. You can't do fucking everything yourself so when a ball is passes to a player off-screen, there's no way you can play effective D unless the computer controlled defender has actually closed down on the player recieving the ball. These cats will layoff like literally 5-7 yards and by the time I can actually see my player the attacker has already made a pass under no harrasment. This is one of the major reasons it's really hard to play solid defense and the pacing is so quick...because your entire midfield defense is non-existent. Also, the defensive ai on corner kicks is just absolutely mind-boggling. I can't even count hoe many times I've seen an attacker wide open off a corner because his marker ran to some other spot for god knows what reason.

3) Player reaction AI. Many times I'll see a rebound opportunity or a a chance to gain possession go to waste because the comp controlled players simply won't react. I'm sitting there manually switching between players of course but again, when you're online and thst split second reaction makes all the difference, its really frustrating.

4) Manual switching. First, when I have it on manual, I expect my cursor to never be changed...yet for some reason, often on long passes, it gets switched. Also, the actual switching seems like a cotdamn crapshoot because half the time it doesn't switch to
the player in the closest spot to stop the incoming attack or get a rebound or track
down the ball. I have no idea how the CPU is determining who to switch to but many
times it doesn't give you the player you want to control.

All this adds up to online play that is very repetitive and unrealistic.

To add to that, its astonishing how easy it is to get a counter off a corner. the defenders show no urgency in getting back

but yeah, this is mainly my qualm w/ running a 4-3-3. theres no benefit to wasting a 4th forward for the sake of (logically of course) dedicating a man to strengthen the center. if the AI played tighter it'd be worth it. but as is, its just a waste of a forward or winger

pretty much. it always feels like the game puts you a step behind on defense even though you fully recognize the threat.

---------------------GK-------------------
---RB--------CB----------CB-----------LB--
------------------------------------------
--------------RDMF-------LDMF-------------
------------------------------------------
----------RAM------------------LAM--------
------------------------------------------
--------------RS-----------LS-------------

I have it editied as such:

CB- High D, low offense

RB and LB- High D, medium offense(you can set one of them to medium D if you wish for more overlapping play on a certain side). I have my LB(Clichy) with an attack arrow forward to overlap and get some sideline play.

RDMF- medium D, medium O....attack arrow going forward(fills the area left by the RAM, below)

LDMF- high D, low O....defense arrow on a back diagonal toward the middle of the field(gives you a defender to slow down the opposition if the rdmf does get caught too far forward)

RAM- medium D, high O.....attack arrow diagonal to the sideline(make sure the RAM has a penchant for crossing)

LAM- medium D, high O. You can get some great runs if you utilize the LB coming forward to set the LAM clear in space.

RS- low d, high O.

LS - low d, high O.

It's a GREAT passing formation, and the movement arrows allow for constant inter-play and constant runs....and still balance defensively with the 2 dmf's filling gaps.

In terms of custom tactics, I have it set to short, risky passing to ensure support and movement. The rest is pretty much up to your own preferences.

If your RB is the far better player going forward compared to your LB, then flip everything in terms of movement arrows.

(as Man Utd)
vs Barcelona in the CL semis, first leg at the Nou Camp, their ENTIRE lineup in above average (light green) form

heres my lineup (I cant remember Barca's but it was weird. Had a Messi/Henry/Ibra frontline)
--------------Asenjo
--Rafael---Albiol--Vidic---Santon
--------------Machado
------Gourcuff-------Hamsik
---Rooney----Higuain----Valencia

1st half: Henry scored a bullshit toepoke off a cross as Santon (my backup LB) completely whiffed a clearing header. Ibrahimovic pulls his invulnerability and holds off Vidic and Albiol on a break and chips my keeper. I could barely keep the ball for more than two passes and it was impossible to get the ball off of them. it felt like they were two steps ahead of me. I was on the verge of chucking my controller. Down 2-0 at the half

Halftime adjustment: Rooney to LW. Valencia out, Di Maria in at RW. Take a break to go get a soda and calm down.

2nd half: The plan was to throw the entire arsenal at them. Raise the offense to max and play a High Pressure strategy. the change at the break paid off as Di Maria made instant impact with a short-post cross on the break that Hamsik headed in. I went on to reel off 5 goals by the 60m mark. Ended up winning 8-3.

I accepted a transfer to Liverpool. Really regret that. It was more fun playing in the lower leagues and starring in the team.
