I'm gonna have to either buy a fight pad or an arcade stick asap. I was gonna cop a stick from play-asia a while back but waited cuz I thought I might be able to get one of them tournament sticks. But now it looks like I'm gonna have to order something from online.

Your Balrog and Guile are vicious btw. Had me searching for ways to attack them. Great stuff.

jump in fierce kick followed by a sweep...

jump back and repeat....

he sometimes throw a sonic boom or a pull a low fierce punch at the beginning of the round...

Yeah...the SNK biting is pretty apparent on SF4 overall. Most of the combos are a lot of regular moves with a special or two mixed in. They remind me of the third special style on Alpha 3.

Oh...and I like Ramon much more.

Overall, I'm enjoying getting used to the game while unlocking folks. I'm missing Akuma and Gouken, and then I'll be ready to train up and get involved online.

i would have beasted w/'gief, but i can't hit the spinning clothesline like i'd like w/that shitty controller and default settings. i can't even begin to discuss the amount of ultra combos i left on the table, but, people still felt the need to try to use ken/ryu in firefights and jump into tiger uppercuts.

Ok so last tuesday I go to gamestop bright and early to pick up SF4 and the special edition fight stick. Cats is talking about how everybody hates me because my fightstick (pre-order) was the only one that came in.

took it home and noticed the fuckin hard kick button didn't respond. Turned it off for awhile then got back on that night and its working... ok cool.

next day the fucking stick wont go to the left so no moving to the left or blocking for me. And NOTHING fixed it.

Had to take that shit back and I SUCK with the 360 controller.

Talk about bad luck

and on top of that I can't find a decent arcade stick online anywhere. Its like cats copped em all for this game.

because it has 8 face buttons
the 6 face button EX2 is OK but The Doc's finding that on SF4, having 4 on the face is actually helpful.

The Doc's SE should be in next week. If it fucks up, he's switchin' out the stick with whichever Sanwa works for it.

In fact, you should just go ahead and cop that one since it's the same one.

The Doc has decided to mod his SE stick since it's ridiculously easy -- he won't be using it much until he does that just to be safe

ITDO, the HRAP has a better layout on the PS3 than it does the 360, since you generally would not have to config

I heard it's the same as the HRAP3, just with the street fighter artwork.

I want one for myself too, so I want to know how it plays for sfIV, but I'd also like to buy a couple and flip them on ebay if it's worthwhile. Anyone who wasn't able to get the madcatz te stick inbox me if you're interested.

This one on one only thing is killing me. Half the time I get a request I'm stuck fighting some other scrub that doesn't want to quit. By time I finish, the lobby is moved on. Only having one request per room blows. Pay the dough and get the code from the HD:R crew. Then the game would be almost unstoppable.

On Fighting Sticks: I've just accepted I probably won't get one until April at this point. Just about every option is sold out, back ordered, or sucks. I think I'll end up getting a CE stick to mod, have one built by the Arcade-in-a-Box crew (I really miss the US arcade style sticks, and the HAPP buttons seem to be what I'm looking for), and get one of the fight pads for my buddy when he comes to play (he's a die hard Genesis fan, and really misses the 6 button pad, which I never could use). I keep looking at that Hori stick as an option to modding the CE stick, but I'm not sure I can work with the button layout. Either slanted to the right or the rainbow layout just seems, well, wrong. And I'm not paying the jacked up prices they want for any of them now.

Other than that, this shit rocks.

At least the Hori sticks on PS3 have a "Street Fighter Friendly" layout; The Doc doesn't know why they fucked it up for the 360 (in the US)

if you can get a SE stick, The Doc would mod it (that's what he's doing) but you can't put Happ parts in there, they just won't fit.

This has the 'competition' (US style) stick and the HAPP buttons. The price looks like it jumped $15 this week, and the 9 week shit is ridiculous. If I copped the CE, I know the Sanwa parts make it like the Japanese sticks.

Yeah, SFIV has upped the demand for a good joystick...everywhere's getting slammed.

Those are nice though.
Though since it has 6 buttons and the PS3 has at least 8, where are the others?

for whatever reason, wake up dragon punching next to a crouching gief seems to be the strategy for ken players (and sagat players, too).

the smart ones realize what i'm doing after the second time, but I've had dumb dumbs keeping trying that shit for entire matches and losing from that one move.

because of the whole "super armor/will 360 you on a dime" problem. The Doc can't really tick throw with him (sometimes, if Green Hand is blocked) but just using him sometimes kind of clues one in as to what NOT to do to him... LOL.

Sagat, for being considered top dog, The Doc really wants to know how he of all people would handle a similarly skilled Gief.

lol.

The only real consistent problems I have are good Vega players because I don't see them enough to know what they tend to do, and good Guile players.

He had to use Guile to get past that BULLSHIT 10th Normal Time Attack, since somehow, even The Doc's use of Gief couldn't manage his way past some of that CPU cheese.

The last person you fight in that nonsense is Seth.

jab fireballs work pretty well (Gief can't jump as well as others, so he gets hit by these a lot)

If he spins through it, tiger uppercut works pretty well, or sweeps. That, and jumping around a lot in general to stay away from grabs. Apparently Gief can throw you even after he gets hit (so ticks don't really do shit against him), so I had to adjust to that, lol

A Few Things About Street Fighter 4
Saturday, February 21, 2009 at 10:24PM
Sirlin
Street Fighter 4 is finally here, with several perfect 100/100 reviews. Here's a few things I noticed about the game.

In ranked matches, you can see the opponent's name before the match and kick them or reject the challenge. This allows you to cherry pick who you fight and negates the entire purpose of a ranked match.

In ranked matches (well, all matches) there is no double blind character select. This means the optimum strategy is often to wait until the opponent chooses first so you can counter-pick. This is a very annoying situation.

When lag inevitably happens in an online fighting game, there are different ways to handle it. Some SF4 matches I played had large input delay, maybe as high as 15 frames. This is the time between your button press and seeing the effect happen. Adding input delay is really the worst way to handle lag. GGPO's amazing netcode shows that avoiding input delay and hiding lag in other ways is the way to go. That technology has been readily available for years, so it's disappointing to feel input delay in an online match.

The button config screen is "the wrong way." The right way is for the screen to list functions, then you press the buttons you want to assign. The wrong way is to list buttons, then you scroll through lists of functions to assign. The reason that one way is right and the other way is wrong is pretty clear when you watch people try to configure buttons. I've had to watch what must be thousands of people do this over the years in all the tournaments I've helped run (not to mention local gatherings). When the config screen says "Jab" and requires you to press the button you want, you just press the upper left button on your stick (or whatever button on your gamepad). This is a one-step process. But if the screen lists "X" and then requires you to scroll through functions until you find jab, it requires a two step process. You have to know which button on your controller is labeled "X." When this screen is the right way, no one has to know if the upper left button happens to be X or A or B or whatever else.

If you think this is negligible, you have never seen people set buttons. The wrong way turns what should be a 3 second task into a fairly confusing affair. Yes I know the wrong way allows you to have lots of functions in your list, but this can be done the right way also.

On to gameplay issues. The jumps have strange acceleration to them. While that's subjective, look at Zangief's jump that seems to have the acceleration of a flea. (Incidentally, why does his splash not stay out the whole time in the air?). Also, getting hit out of the air is extremely floaty, which means it takes unusually long to get back to a state where you can actually move again. This "moving in jello" feel is reinforced by many throws that have dead time at the end when it seems like you should be able to move (see Vega's for example).

The size of the stages is extremely large relative to the size of the characters. This helps runaway tactics.

Optimizing for the 1% rather than the 99% case. There's two examples, the first is tech recover (quick get up from a knock down). 99% of the time, I want to get up fast, but this is the action that requires button presses. Why not admit that getting up fast is the intent and make it default, unless the player holds down some buttons to get up slow? That's how it works for Robo-Ky in Guilty Gear, by the way. Incidentally, don't the two kinds of get up timing only lessen the importance of knockdown by allowing you mess up the attacker's timing a bit? Like the decision to have large stages, this seems not to favor offense.

Next is the 2-button throw, a bad idea in fighting games with 2D gameplay. 3D Fighting games are different beasts, so they are excused here, but note that even Dead or Alive offers a macro to turn its 2 button throw into a 1 button throw...and maps that macro to a face button by default. Anyway, 2 button throws solve a non-problem that no one has ever actually had. That's the problem of accidentally throwing and being sad about it. Street Fighter 2, Guilty Gear series, and Street Fighter Alpha 2 all demonstrated that 1 button throws work just fine and don't actually create any problems. Adding a second button press just adds complexity where it's not necessary, and helps nothing. (Edit: it does add a throw whiff which could be a good thing, but simpler is still better...)

Other non-problems we might solve in 2D fighting games would be to make blocking 1 button and jumping 1 button (each are traditionally zero buttons). We certainly could add those button presses, but it would make more sense to reduce the button presses to as few as possible: zero to jump, zero to block, and one to throw.

It's especially unfortunate that Cammy's hooligan throw requires a 2-button throw in the middle to complete it. Why exactly is this necessary, rather than one button?

2 button throws actually introduce the problem of kara-throws, a bug from SF3 that we now have again in SF4. This is when you cancel a forward moving attack a frame or two into it with a throw command in order to greatly extend your throw range. Do the designers want a long throw range or do they not? If they don't kara throws shouldn't be in the game. If they do, then base throw ranges should be extended for all players, not just the ones who input a difficult command.

Another similar bug is the chain combo cancel bug. As an example, consider Sakura. Low short does cancel into special moves. But if you rapid fire the low short (do it 2 or 3 times quickly each one cancels the last) then you CANNOT cancel the last hit into a special. I'm not saying this is a problem at all, necessarily. This restriction is there for good reason: to prevent the game from degenerating into low short -> big damage stuff. It would make more sense to give players a reason to start combos with bigger moves sometimes. Guilty Gear does a great job of this by reducing your entire combo's damage by 20% for each low short. (Hey Guilty Gear players, I know I'm simplifying there.)

Ok so what's the problem, sounds good that you can't do low short, low short, special move, right? But you can do it. If you make the last short a link rather than a chain (do it slowly, but not so slow that it doesn't combo) then you can cancel it into a special move. So really, you can get around this restriction if only you have high dexterity skills. Now, this is also true in ST and SF HD Remix, but that's not so much intent as what we were stuck with. For an entirely new game, I'm surprised to see this still there. I'm even more surprised to see combos that use this in the challenge mode, meaning the developers know about it and accept that low short is really this powerful. SF4 Sakura, for example, can low short, (link), low short, ex shoryken, ultra. She can do a lot more than that, but you get the idea.

This issue of rapid fire moves using a bug to cancel into specials is actually minor compared to the next topic though, a topic that will dominate much of the game: link combos in general. The game is filled with difficult 1-frame links. These are moves that just barely combo into each other with 1/60th of a second timing. In high level play, players will master these and they become common. So Sakura doing low jab, (link), low fierce, short helicopter kick, (link) low short, ex shoryuken, ultra for 50% will be common. One friend of mine already does this combo in real matches after only 2 days of playing, as well as other scarily damaging combos off low short that involve hard links.

Other examples, Ryu can now link low short, low jab, low forward. He can also link low strong, low strong, low roundhouse. Linking is the name of the game, which actually makes the game closer to CvS2 than to 3s or ST. The effect of all these links is to hide the actual game behind an impenetrable wall of execution. If you practice (ie, develop 1p skills unrelated to strategy and unrelated to interaction with the opponent) then you gain access to the real game, a game of high damage off small hits, but only for the dexterous.

Of course some level of this is inherent in just about every fighting game. It's a question of how far to turn the knob towards 1p activities and away from strategy. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo has dexterity requirements of course, but winning tournaments while using zero or very few link combos is entirely possible. That simply isn't the main focus of the game. The existence of many, many new links in SF4 shifts the focus toward that though.

Next up, we have ultras. All I'll really say here is that in real matches I find myself having to pump qcf x 2 over and over looking for the right moment to do the ultra. When I find that moment, I have to complete the qcf x 2 command with PPP. Let's hope I don't press PP in those moments, because that command gives me a super, which is an entirely different move. I'm not sure what qcf x 2 + PPP is doing in a "casual friendly game" in the first place.

Then there's focus canceling. The idea of paying half your meter to cancel a move is taken from Guilty Gear where it was called roman canceling. It's a wonderful mechanic in Guilty Gear, by the way. The command in that game is press any three buttons--I use PPP. This is actually pretty natural because when using a joystick, your right hand's natural resting position is on those PPP buttons usually. In SF4, the roman cancel command is medium punch + medium kick, then tap forward, forward. This is really awkward and a whole lot of inputs for one decision (the decision to roman cancel). I wish I could map this command to PPP or something, rather than having to do button presses AND double taps. There's many combos involving this that you'll need to be able to do to be competitive, so I'm not sure why this ended up requiring so many extraneous inputs.

When I read about the 100/100 scores, I see again and again how "simple and elegant" the game is. Two super meters, a 3-tier focus attack system, and all the complications above seem to fly in the face of that. Even more though, I hear how "casual friendly" it is. This is deeply mysterious and I'm not sure why this so often claimed. Not every game has to be casual friendly, so it would seem more honest to just explain how casual unfriendly all these things are. Qcf x 2 +PPP all the time, extra button presses to throw, extra button presses to roman cancel, and many, many extremely difficult link combos work in concert to create that impenetrable wall of execution between you and the actual game (the interaction between you and your opponent). I wish we could get rid of all this stuff and focus more on the gameplay itself.

Edit: I forgot to mention two more things. First, the unlocks. I'm very surprised to see basic functionality of the multiplayer game--the characters--locked behind tedious 1p tasks. I had to pay a tax of fighting the computer on easiest for long time just to get the core features of the game. (I did this picture-in-picture while watching episodes of Frasier.) I'm fully aware that casual players love unlocks, and that's why non-essential content like costumes, movies, icons, and titles are all perfectly fine to give as rewards for playing 1p content. But the *characters*? This steps on the toes of those wanting to play the multiplayer game by making our first experience with the game a very boring one. I wanted to hire a MMO gold farmer to do this for me.

And the last thing I should have mentioned here is that despite all these many problems, there is fun to be had in the game...

...and he's absolutely right about some of that, especially the online business. It's not a complete failure online but lobbies would work best in a game like this.

The Doc hates going to the three buttons for ultras, but seeing as there are EX moves in this game there's no other way for them outside giving them completely different motions than the main supers (which might make sense).

The Doc likes that he actually quantified his nitpicking...

The game is more like a 90-95/100 for The Doc. It's as close to perfection and the perfect game to come off a (10+ year) layoff as one is going to get.

On the one hand, it makes some sense. If you know certain guys suck/are super cheesy, or waiting for someone specifically to fight, kick them out of your match (Setting the match up as a private match negates some of that, but still). But I can see where it can/will be abused.

6 of one, 1/2 dozen the other. Used to it in the arcade and a 2p match at the crib. It does make an interesting dynamic online though, which is nice. But, if you're good, you should be able to beat whomever with your character. Doesn't always hold true, but I'm saying...

Eh. methinks this one is a bit subjective as well. Is the netcode for SF4 bad? No. Is it better than HD:R? Can't say. Had problems with both, which can simply be chalked up to being online in the first place. Fighting games do require more precision timing than any genre of online gaming (at least, I would think), so the strides that both games have made are nothing short of amazing. Most of the time, you don't notice unless it's a glaring glitch/screen freeze.

Agreed. the only thing that kind of config screen is good for is mapping special moves (throws, focus, 3xp or 3xk) to one button. Which, I suppose, is why they went to that setup in the first place. A necessary evil due to play mechanics, maybe? Still don't like it.

This and the focus attack makes the game extremely difficult to play on a pad. I usually have the short/jab mapped to the R1/L1, and if I hit both, 8 out of 10 times I get a kick instead of a throw. The throw command is bogus and I can't see any reason why it has to be 2 buttons.

That's funny. I can see giving people a reason to play the 1p campaign. All the other unlocks (medals, colors, stances, etc) should have done it. If you want the big guns to be unlocks (Akuma, Gouken, Seth), I'll give you that. But I shouldn't be forced to use C. Viper (man I hate using her) or any of the new characters I may have no interest in to unlock anyone .

Even though his post can be sour grapes (coming from a designer who's game just got knocked from the fighting spotlight), most of his gripes had merit. I would like to hear some of the nice things he has to say about the game.

the one thing i was interested in is whether or not there was ever a reason not to use the quick rise.

he makes one very valid point that annoys the hell out of me - why doesn't 'gief's splash last all the way through the jump? one of the most important things in playing a very scary gief is using that splash animation as soon as you jump. it frightens the hell out of people that aren't confident in their anti-air game.

i've played akumas who attempt to jump back/air fireball until they are in the corner then teleport to the other side. of course, the teleport is mad obvious and they end up teleporting into a spinning clothesline when fighting w/their back against the wall is prolly a better idea.

i noticed that chun li problem when trying to do a few of her challenge combos, but, since i barely use her, i couldn't put my finger on what was wrong.

over on sirlin's blog, he's gettin' cosigns from some dude who complained about lag but is using his cellphone as an internet connection. i was gonna reply (fuck that dude, infinity) but it's a pretty respectfal convo, for the most part.

edit: i really don't understand the bitching about link combos. i'm gonna go to training to see how links/cancels/scaling effect these potential deadly combos. they look nice, but w/scaling in place, they aren't wrecking shit like that.

Overall tho, I can't hate on all the little layers they added with focus/ex/special/ultras. I feel him where the regular Street Fighter titles have always really been strategy focused, the 'smarter' player wins as opposed to just the one with the better reflexes. And I liked how HDR was focused on making alot of things easier, I wish SF4 would have adopted all the easier movements as opposed to just some, and focused on streamlining some things (the two buttom special move throws)

But the games done a fascinating job of keeping everyone happy across all the levels so far. I don't know if you can call them as flaws yet. Im having a ball so far, and im just barely getting adjusted to the new angles. Some of the other things (lobby system, etc) were on point

In response to Reply # 88

You could put a hurting on anyone using Chun Li with her forward in any version of SF2 or SFA, since so many moves were linked to it and it had range and priority (true story. If an arcade machine had a bad forward button, I'd walk away from the machine mid match back in the day. She NEEDS that forward). Here, the range sucks in a crouch (although some of her standing forwards show promise) and that head stomp whiffs more than a little bit. Timing and polygons, I suppose.

Damn that one Time Attack where you have to basically play the original 12 characters of Street Fighter, under Super Street Fighter II rules.
50 sec to start, +30 sec every round won, both you and the CPU have no Focus (bullshit against the likes of Blanka and/or Balrog), no UC, no EX moves, no Dash, no Throw Counter (bullshit, since you could tech in Super Street Fighter II)... and you can use your super but that's about it.

By the time The Doc got past Guile and saw that it was Boxer, Spanish Claw, (F)agat, and Dictator... he figured out what the point of that one was.

The Doc cleared it with Gief. Tried with Sagat but kept jobbing at or around Blanka or Gief.

If anyone does this with anyone other than Gief The Doc would love to see that.

*raises arm to the sky again* BISON!!!!!!!!

the options from challenge mode. in casual matches, you should be able to pick from the no UC, SC, meters, etc... pile. I would also like a wildcard option that randomly picked from all the options and assigned them to each player individually. i don't think it's necessary, but it does allow for some pointless unbalanced fun.

the options are obviously in there, bring 'em over to vs and let's check it out.

also, quick note - during time/survival, when there is a quote at the bottom, you can tell if you're gonna unlock a costume/taunt.

so far, i've got color 9 left to unlock. i wanted to take violent ken online to scare the silly shotos, but 2 opponents straight picked the lava stage where you can barely make out ken's white hair.
that's what i get for trying to fight fireuppercuts w/fireuppercuts.

His air fireball goes down even weirder than the "rebalanced" version of him does in HDR.

The Doc only tends to use him to unlock shit in the game (after he's been unlocked) but in versus mode not so much.

The Doc can easily do his ultra and his super, though...

Evidently I need a late pass because SF4 has custom soundtracks. If only I could connect my ipod this it would be over.

so, after my 100th online victory ((pats self on the back)) i decided to unlock seth - what a fuckin' chore. i've still got fuerte and dhalsim left. dhalsim is a fuckin' victim in this shit. i tried some of the sim vs sagat shit that i know works - only to eat teleport piledrivers like fuckin' tic tacs.

fuerte just lacks a simple effective 3 hit combo. unless, of course, i'm just dumb. i think i'll have to go back to training and see. i hope crouching fierce floats the opponent so i can land that anti air leg grab. if not, this might take all week.

the last character that i had trouble w/was gen, but at least he's got a non-sliding sweep (seth spd bait) and a credible ultra for when you *do* get that ass kicked.

and, he's still easy to my best characters.
after my 15th or so attempt to beat him w/gen/dhalsim/fuerte, i switched over to sagat and beasted for a few before losing and getting back to trying to win w/a new character.

when playing straight through, no continues or character switches, he seems way less likely to teleport spd or wall hop full screen kick over a projectile. problem is, playin' through w/fuerte led me into a fight against zangief that i couldn't win for the life of me.

i want to get seth for casuals and to unlock as many trophies/titles/icons as possible.

completed the colors, too.
about to complete the taunts.

i am *loving* the challenges where they give you unlimited SC meter. it's basically a chance to watch sagat blast fools w/ ex tiger shots and ex knees. the comp likes to safe jump and go for focus attacks, the tiger knee shatters that bullshit and the ex knee makes it look so pretty.

seth was alot easier to beat yesterday w/fuerte. i pretty much ran the entire match.

Another thing I noticed, easiest way to get a online match. Play arcade mode with ranked matches on. you'll won't get past the 1st match ever.

New to the boards. Whats up All.

This game is insane. However, I think the number of remarks complaining about using KEN/RYU/SAGAT/BISON/GUILE/ZANGIEF are interesting. But for me coming from a standpoint where I USED to play SF2 religiously back in 92. Those were the ONLY characters people used to use. EVER. The majority of arcades had people using shootos. (Ryu/Ken/Akumas) And it was only when the Superthrow became popular did you see the amount of guiles being used at the Arcades.

Its a base moveset and philosophy when using Ken and Ryu. For me I found it easy to use a combination of Ryu and Sagat until I got the timing down. And that's what I like about Street Fighter 4. you can use all the fundamental basics of what you do know from Sf2 Integrate that s** here and just get on. Chances are these guys who are like 4000000 points deep in Network mode are probably guys who have mastered the original SF2s Or either have the time to spare. I get messages on Ps3 from cats who complain. But the bottom line is if your street fighter 2 base is strong. Then youre always going to be a beast to deal with because those basic techniques WILL always work in these games.

There are some things I like about this game and somethings I dont. I like the fact I can use the basics to just jump in the fire and still have a challenging match,. Capcom did that right by not tweaking the gameplay and still adding the original characters and only making moderations in the animations of the moves and the ultra combos. I also like the fact that its a new enough game that I have to learn some of these new blocking techniques and the timing of the ultras to where this game feels fresh and the only way Im gonna get better is to practice and learn this s** all over again.

Essentially its still the same Street Fighter 2 for me but a brand new game as well. new enough for newer players to be able to stay competitive.

Ryu and Ken are overpowered
Zangief's suckup is worse than before
Guile is all about charging and timing and once people start to master that. his character is going to be a pain to deal with
Dhalsim is unbelivably powered down it seems. He was a lot stronger in 2
Sagat was always powered up they just made him a bit more faster than this one. And apparently hes taking HGH in Steroids since part 2

To me basically its still the same game. NO ONE is unbeatable. You just need to figure out patterns and timing and strategy just like in 1,2, and 3 and then it's really gonna be on. I missed out on the whole Parrying thing with 3 cause I was in college then. But this focus thing seems interesting. And I'm still trying to master it.

If I could use Guile of Old and use Fierce Fierce Standing Razor kick and the side to side Superthrows on SETH. It'd be over. lol

Anyone If anybody wants to play and have this thing on Ps3 PSN ID is PharaoheMonch

No Im not THE Pharoahe Monch but I couldnt come up a name and Agent Orange was on at the time...

Yeah It's great for Zangief players. But again the thing is if youve played him on SF2 from the very start. He's always been like that. Those suckups are amazing. I think they should leave it though. W/ that improved spinning lariet he's even more of a pain in the ass to deal with. But thats the challenge and what we need to figure out.

You on PS3 or Xbox?

What got him the upgrade is the teleport shit, before it was something you mighty pulled out to get out of the corner, now it's something that if someone fucks up=death. Im mad you can fireball, teleport behind them, and just sandwich em with blows.

Yeah man that video made me look at that character in a whole new light. I guess once people get the machanics down for him. There are going to be some beats using Dhalsim. his character was a slow burn though. Even in the heyday. Not too many people used him. But I guess thats the thing. Because everyone I DID see using him were animals at the game. Dhalsim terrorizing Ryus and Guiles and doing 50 match win streaks. Crazy.

But that teleport is crazy. Hes doing it from all kinds of angles. I wonder if you can just either jump like the guy did once or when he teleports behind you be ready w/ a Spinning Cyclone W/ Ryu or a Razor Kick with Guile. You should be able to block it no. Because his aim is to try and take your back. Now hitting that with an Ultra Combo fireball..thats another issue..

Can you imagine being the other cat playing him. You got this guy on the verge on fucking death and youre trying to hit your strongest move on him and he parrys EVERYTHING. All this while all the Street Fighter fanboys looking on and there aint SHIT you can do about it. Then afterwards he jumps nails a kick and kills YOU with a special

The Doc couldn't even imagine it. At best he'd get lucky parrying low attacks, and hits for more than 1 strike (EX projectiles and Gill's damn Pyro/Cryokinesis)...but a whole super? Sheeeit, that's dedication. Someone does that to The Doc, then The Doc deserves to lose. No shame in losing to that kind of skills.

To parry, you gotta read minds for real... LOL

Daigo prolly the only dude who could go through SFIII 3rd and get "MSF" every round.

Yeah It's probably the most famous Street Figther clip on You Tube. Imagine having to live that down everyday when you hear that guys name or play the game. That was a No Vasaline type ether of epic proportions.

One of the things thats impressive is how HE Constatly puts YOU in danger while HE's in KO mode.

If it happens to The Doc (like it did on HDR)...it's a good hearkening to the days when he used to leave himself wide open on Marvel vs Capcom and get launched into an aerial rave by the likes of "Slacksoff" and the cast of characters in the arcade.

Once upon a time you could always beat The Doc with Sakura's Haru-Ichiban. Not anymore.

So I was still using those tactics (interestingly enough, the heel kick worked haha)

Now I understand the "gripe" about the stage being too long. Wall jumps were my shit, but now it looks like I'm running to the corner. I ain't a turtle, I'm the aggressor. *watches BP go down*

But man, I didn't know so many titles pop up after five games. I was expecting like 3 or 4, gave me at least 9 (current title: Go Easy On Me)

Yeah it seems this game really punishes players who are TOO offensive minded and go in guns blazing. Some of the tactics I use in SF2 just flat out wont work even against the newest of players. On the flip side of that. I've learned some timing maneuvers and im hitting angles with some of the jump kicks that I never would have landed in the old games. Seems like everyones got to go to school with this game.

That might be a bad connection

Yesterday I played against 2 guys who were like a level 6 and after the first round. I lost. The connection got spiked. There was no reason for them to quit the game. But more than likely they got logged off..

But yeah that sucks.

I hate doing random player matches and when they accept. It takes them a minute to press the button to go to character select. You KNOW theyre reading up on your achievements too

They really need to modify the lobby for this.

And you cant watch any matches? What thee fuck!!!

On a side note. Any of you challeneged some of the top dogs in Ranked mode. I noticed on PS3 all those cats are from Japan with like 4000000 battle points

You know for the Ps3. The controller is a bit weird but after a while. It felt like I was playing the original game on the Super Nintendo. Got used to it after a couple of hours of just messing around.

The thing that really sucks is pressing TWO buttons to THROW and TWO buttons to cancel. If you try and set SNES settings. You basically have lost the ability to throw and focus unless you're used to those settings.

I cant imagine trying to use the controller for the 360 though.

y'all niggas must not've had a SNES or some shit. that joint used to fuck my thumbs up.

yeah, it ain't as easy to use as a joystick or the fightpads, but it's serviceable. shit, i've been using it as my pad of choice for Alpha 3, Third Strike, Super Turbo, and Garou for over a year now. quarter circles and z-motions are fuckin effortless on it. 360s are smooth too, but my 720s are a lil unreliable ONLY because i don't have much practice with Zan (i use the Champ, niggas).

that said, i want a stick for luxury's sake and a fightpad, because those 6 face buttons would be lovely for Nintendo and Genesis emus.

stop being prissy ass busters though and blaming your suspect skills on the pads, niggas. i can't wait to get online, even though me and the fam are having fun with that shit offline (we just got it on Sunday and everything's unlocked already, so we can just go headup).

In response to Reply # 176

what i've read seems to point to them shooting for a more casual audience. they wanted more people to be able to execute the moves. online uses delay as opposed to dropping frames so i don't think input effects it. hdr drops frames so it's a bit different.

i play on ps3 w/a fightpad. i "need" the pad because of zangief and his spinning clothesline. i played hdr on a regular ps pad but i never had to hit 3 buttons (hdr has the simpler inputs). sf4 is different because of ultras and i can't really rely on the left shoulder button. when i play w/sagat, i remap lk+mk+hk to the right shoulder.

the fact that lk+mk+hk registers as hitting hk is cool, but, you can't use that button on supers w/out gettin' the ex version.

eventually, i want to get a custom stick, but i don't need one now. online is absolutely filled w/scrubs. there are a bunch of spots i found that make custom sticks but i'm not tryna go broke. truthfully, i think i only need it to pull off all the challenge mode combos.

I played a modded arcade street fighter 2 that was embedded on a hard drive on Xbox a few months ago. Moves were uncomfortable at first. But what was weird was I was able to do guile's superthrow on it no problem.

Come to think of it. They should have kept that move in the game. For nostalgia.

For me, Alpha 3 (actually 2 Gold, but i'm saying), IV, Super Turbo, Third Strike.

If HD:R is in discussion, that would probably be tied with IV right now. The look, feel and online options even it up for the wild stuff you can do with IV (like comparing driving a Bentley with an Elise). I never could get with SFIII, but loved the SFA series. I still play the SFA Anthology on a semi-regular basis.

Like dude below said, it played a lot different from Alpha 2. Alpha 2 was more in line with Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo in terms of gameplay but with some nice additions like alpha counters and different level supers and whatnot. It's kinda hard to describe. I liked Alpha 3 just not as much as Alpha 2 Gold. That junk was pure fire to me.

They threw everything but the kitchen sink in that one, with just about every character from the SFII and it's many iterations in there. The look of the game is subjective (I though it looked fine, but SFA2 may have looked better), and the gameplay was, well... They tried to take the best of SFA2 and the regular SFII series with the various 'ismz' (which changed the supers you had available and some move sets, if I remember). It gave a lot of variety, but maybe too much. It was as if they started with the vs. series (MvsC) and paired it down to match the SF style games. Not that it was bad, because it was fun as shit (and seeing Charlie vs. Guile was a nice touch).

SFA2 just felt right. You had the good core of original people, some decent new guys (Rolento was funny with that zip cord) and just played as tight as a SF game should. It was as if they took the SSFIIT setup and gave it the Alpha treatment. The dramatic (tag team) battle in the home version also set it off (Akuma was KILLER on there...)

This came after the cries of "Where's Blanka? Where's Honda? You mean I have to play as someone else?"

I remember it messed up the original time line of the whole series since SFA was based on what happened between SF1 (remember when you had to punch the button?) and SF2. Blanka and Honda were supposed to be only in SF2. It was kinda like putting Han Solo in the Star Wars Prequel (which they might as well had. Haha a young Han vs Boba vs Greedo).

Now that I remember, I agree with the list.

Here's the wiki entry on it:

*aside: EX was really really awful

1.Super Turbo. The Original. gameplay, speed, music, all top-notch here and its the one that started it all. Initially they upgraded the fighting engines and combos and all that. But this is a preferance for me.

2.Alpha 3 had the widest character sets but the choppy gameplay and attempt to make it more like King of Fighters was a bit too much for me as far as the looks and the feel of the game. My opinion they didnt need to do that because initially King of Fighters was trying to be Street Fighter

3.Third Strike- Wasnt into this as much as the others. But parrying is something they should bring back when they release the upgraded version of 4.

4.SF4- too early too say. but so far its up there. Well see how this goes once the nostalgia factor wears off and see if im just as into this 4 months from now. But the game play is clean once you get used to it.

0nly problem is. If Capcom insists on giving these characters back stories. They need to do a better job linking them all up. I guess the endings and the cut scenes are supposed to all tie together. But if you havnt been an avid player of some of the alphas. Its easy to get lost in the story. Otherwise whats wrong with two guys fighting 1 guy wins and advances onto the tournament.

Also in 4. The graphics are great. But the background designs need some work. Its the World warrior tournament. Why are you fighting in places like a storage garage, under a bridge with a bunch of kids watching. or on a Boat. The levels are so random. We need more backgrounds like outside Old vegas (Golden Nugget) casino in front of crowds. Or Vega's steel cage. Nitpicking and dont effect gameplay. But it would be nice.

a great thing about it is how limited the move sets are. Each character only has a couple of specials and their regular moves, so a decent player can memorize the most common strategies and how to get around them. IMO, it's easier for a worse player to play it more strategically than the others and makes it a more satisfying game for everyone. At the same time, the game never feels too simple - canceling into supers, EX dash cancels and all that makes it really deep for the high-level cats too. Overall, it's just a better-rounded game, and more fun.

Alpha 3 would have been transposed w/3S, but V-ISM and Kara-madness broke the hell outta the game. Also, Alpha 2 Gold was a much better game than 3 and The Doc would have ranked it above all these listed here, despite A3 having some of The Doc's favorite people to play (like R. Mika and Karin) and just about every other notable Street Fighter character ever.

3S has some of the same symptoms as A3, but the "broken" isn't nearly as bad. The worst thing about 3S is also the "best" thing about 3S: parrying... which is something that caters too much to the heavy side of skilled players. Seth Killian was dead-on (though he seemed to be hating a little bit) about that. The Doc hates how Sean was nerfed the hell up in this game, but he loves Makoto and Chun-Li in this game. Remy is kind of a fake-ass Guile meets Sagat but he's cool, too. Hugo is a damn beast in the game, too... not Zangief cheap but that's a good thing ITDO.

The Doc was tempted to rank IV 1st, but it's too "new" for that.

Super Turbo was the first stage of "evolution", but even when rebalanced, some characters are just TOO cheesy out the box (before you even get to special moves and whatnot).

Also, don't let the four or five perfect rounds I had get you down, either. The point is you're learning.

Chief, I'm telling you. Let me get my stick, and Chun Li will be coming for Zan. Not being able to pull off ANY of her super moves is killing me. But damn it if I wasn't trying my ass off.

I need to put some work in with someone else, who I think may have something for Gief...
