of course all i saw was a short trailer with no gameplay but it's a now-gen jrpg ...IN SPACE. just give me some planets, stars, nebulae, items, attributes and a cool battle system and i'm a happy man

last remnant and infinite undiscovery look really promising. they seem to be doing some interesting things with the battle systems at least and that's a pretty big change, considering turn-based has been the norm for almost 20 (!) years

btw characters and plot in jrpg's have been stale for YEARS and it's not limited to square enix. personally i don't play jrpg's for characters or plot. i play for battle systems and sometimes settings. if the characters and/or plot happen to be good it's a nice little bonus but i never go into a jrpg thinking "ok, story and characters: BLOW ME AWAY" because it's just not going to happen

honestly it sounds to me like you just don't like jrpg's and that's fine. they're not for everyone

same w/Secret of Mana. He retroactively got into the plot.

RPGs in general were a hard sell to The Doc, who remained in a tight little box as far as his gaming tastes were. Once he was converted, he became a seeker of game play/battle system for the most part.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

man...the storyline has to make the game. I was freaggin BLOWN when I first played Deus Ex.....KOTOR...and Mass Effect. These three had a robust storyline that was amazing. They all have me geeked.

Storyline
Characters
action/system

in that order....

imo video games are currently not up to snuff in regards to storytelling and character development/interaction. simply put, the writing in video games sucks, the plots are contrived and the characters are banal and one-dimensional. obviously there will be some exceptions but at the same time they are exceptions that prove the rule. why would i look to video games for a good story when myriad classic literature and movies i haven't experienced yet are out there? *refuses to budge from high horse*

that said, video games *are* getting better in regards to storytelling/character. they're still a long ways off though

Well all except Pokemon. I fool wit Pikachu and his niggas.

I get into RPG's for story and exploration of a universe, leveling/attribute systems (I really liked the weapon power system in Mass Effect), and whatever item synthesis system they include (Alchemy system in Oblivion was good, not great but good.)

Of course I am still looking for a kickass MMO, I have a special place for those types of RPGs.

Can'r fucking wait for Fallout 3.

also cosign big time on the character development system. it's a huge part of why i like jrpgs so much. i didn't mention it because i always think of it as a part of or an extension of the battle system

haha yep thats it. it doesnt show you a lot of mercy. also after you beat it there is an endgame that kicks your ass. it can be a grind but it doesnt have to be. you have so much control and different abilities you can give your characters and you cant give them everything. so maybe you decide you want to go a different way you might have to grind to get that character up with your others. but i dont mind grinding on portables i dont think i could take it on consoles though. you will prob have a hard time finding the first game and if you do it will be for like 50 or something since its kinda scarce but the sequel is dropping soon (17th i think). highly recommended

>i need to get off my ass and get a ds (or ds emulator) and get

i dont have a problem with emulators and not sure where the ds is but i would recommend just getting a ds just for the fact its portable

This was not the case with Mass Effect whereas the combat system was rather exciting all the way thru. The side missions on the other hand got stale FAST. All of Oblivion's missions were interesting and quirky and fun and random enough to keep you interested throughout the moajority of it's hefty 200 plus hours. The combat got old quick tho in that one.

from namco?
i been playing rpg's since the dawn of final fantasy

but man this is the best one i've played in a long, long time

the battle system is EXTREMELY fresh
clever mixture of action-based and turn-based rpg's
the action elements aren't just button mashing either
you gotta know your shit to be max effective, plus the customization is insane

the story is amazing and deals with mature themes
and the graphics definitely work with the game since it was originally released on gamecube (i think on PS2 later)

im only playing this now but its kept me up late late nights right from the jump
