ok so.....
''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC) is a file format for audio data compression. Being a lossless compression format, FLAC does not remove information from the audio stream, as lossy compression formats such as MP3, AAC, and Vorbis do.
Like other methods of compression, FLAC's main advantage is the reduction of bandwidth or storage requirements, but without sacrificing the integrity of the audio source. For example, a digital recording (such as a CD) encoded to FLAC can be decompressed into an identical copy of the audio data. Audio sources encoded to FLAC are typically reduced in size 40 to 50 percent (47% according to their own comparison).
FLAC is suitable for everyday playback and audio archival, with support for tagging, cover art and fast seeking. FLAC's free and open source royalty-free nature makes it well-supported by many software applications. FLAC playback support in portable audio devices and dedicated audio systems is limited but growing. Josh Coalson is the primary author of FLAC.

which starts to eat into you profits fastly. And that's *before* adding videos and artwork and the like - all that may push you to a 1GB stick.

Honestly though - I think it's an overall great idea. I think 256kbps mp3 is fine - most listeners (and I mean like 99.8%) can't hear the difference anyway.

80% of the people who buy it wont know how to play the files.

i think this is best suited as a limited edition release on your website/okayplayer, but I also think its an excellent idea.

just make sure the files are DRM-free so once bought, people can burn it to cds or transfer to their portable media players to listen on the go.

What would the stick look like? Maybe a funky design.
Can the music be burned to CD or is it just for mp3 players or neither?
I've read that these jump drive deals load software to your PC for DRM purposes. You taking that angel with it?
Final question.....why?

edit...more questions.
how can this be purchased?
can the jump drive (USB stick) be used for personal storage?
Is there an advantage for getting this over a CD (see next question)? Something like getting new music earlier than those who chose not to buy this?
Are you releasing this music on CD?

how compatible is this at the moment with everyday life?

you can listen to it on your computer/laptop, but can you plug it into
your car? are there dedicated USB players out?

CD's work with almost any medium (car, computer, portable cd players,
dvd players, etc), can a USB stick compete with that?

plus USB's can get expensive.. one would imagine production costs are much less for CD's

either way, i really hope whatever you ultimately decide on works.
i'm sure your fans will take it and appreciate it any way they can get it

you want me to pay 20-30 bucks for music I can't put on my mp3 player?

I think this is a great marketing idea (my group thought of it a while back but it was just too expensive for us) but the ENTIRE POINT of the usb drive is so you can throw the songs on your computer.

Maybe someday usb posts in audio devices will be as ubiquitous as cd players, but until then that usb drive would be practically useless to me and most other people.

edit: I do think it's great that you're soliciting feedback from fans (and, I feel, valuable feedback at that), I wish more artists would.

>how compatible is this at the moment with everyday life?

Once they are on a USB stick you can do anything you want with the music. So as compatible as an iPod.

>you can listen to it on your computer/laptop, but can you plug
>it into
>your car? are there dedicated USB players out?

You can do anything you can do with an mp3 and we know how popular those are.

>CD's work with almost any medium (car, computer, portable cd
>players,
>dvd players, etc), can a USB stick compete with that?

IMO - it's an interesting marketing experiment.
First of all, CDs suck. They get scratched and lose quality over time. They're a pain in the ass to even open. They are huge compared to mp3s (e.g. you can't carry 1,000 of them) etc.

A USB stick would (perhaps) cater to die hard fans (like OKPs) who really have little use for a CD anyway (and can always burn one if they want)

>plus USB's can get expensive.. one would imagine production
>costs are much less for CD's

this may be true. Well fuck it, it IS true. But she's also charging about double. Again this wouldn't target ALL her fans and supplant the CD, it would be a supplementary market. Like vinyl.

>either way, i really hope whatever you ultimately decide on
>works.
>i'm sure your fans will take it and appreciate it any way they
>can get it

werd.

work with. I think as a limited edition (and/or collectors) item, I think USB sticks are a good idea, I don't think the masses are ready for USB drives as a replacement for CD's (yet).

A couple things to consider:
- You can easily pull the audio/content off the drive so it can be put onto a computer/mp3 player and/or burned onto a CD
- DRM Free
- High quality files
- Drive doesn't force user to install custom software to be used on their computer

It's neat, but unless it's uncompressed audio, I probably wouldn't get it (or would get the CD first and then this later as a collectors item).

As long as there is a CD version available, it'll be cool.

Radiohead's shit was 160KBPS and people were upset about that. It needs to be 320KBPS MINIMUM. I think if you put anything lower than 320K, people will just wait for the extras and bonuses to hit the internet and just download.

I would avoid FLAC, Apple Lossless and the like. Stick to something that can be played on EVERY Computer.

it took a couple years before the switch was made to solely releasing movies on dvd.

its a brilliant idea, but its not a good financial move. not that im an expert or anything.

just my 2 cents.

46. "sounds good to me but........ does it come with liner notes?"
In response to Reply # 0

I'm not sure if that's included in "full album artwork". I can't see buying music and not getting the liner notes. (even if they are mising the lyrics for green eyes lol)

Like some others have mentioned above the question would be what's the sound quality gonna be like. Mp3's at V0 would be cool with with me. If it's any format that uses DRM I woudn't buy it. At that point it would make more sense (to me) to buy the cd.

Last but def not least. How is this system of getting a new song a month (till u have the whole album) going to work? Is the software going to be contained on the usb stick, or will there be a need to isntall additional software? Is it going to be compatible with non windows systems like apple, and linux? (ok linux is asking a lot, but it's what I use so I have to ask) In general I'd be leary of having to trust the software regardless. If I just saw it in the store and realized it needed some software to download the new songs each month I would automaticaly think that it was a trick by the RIAA to install something on my system to track me in some way. I think becasue of that, it would be better for it to come with all the content at once.

I'm assuming they would be on the artwork just like Saul did for "Niggy Stardust". Lyrics and production credits. Now if you're looking for something like what ?uest used to do, I know Saul put that on his website. He explained the process and such in a post on his boards.

Did any one get the Smashing Pumpkins USB (or was it White Stripes)? That might be able to answer the bitrate question.

In response to Reply # 87

key/usb gets verified and song is unlocked

usb acts like a dongle basically

possibly have all the songs already on the stick, just unlock em 1 each month
(cons- if someone cracks it/gets an 'unlocked stick' that isnt secured right, they can access all the songs from the start)

or load one song each month to the site, and once the stick is verified by the site, begin the download

(cons- 1st person that d/ls it, the file is gettin sent everywhere. no reason to hit the site)

In response to Reply # 0

for 20 i think id probably get it.

but yeah my car doesnt have a usb drive and dont think ima go buy a new radio for this lol

so if i cant rip the songs to my computer and then burn it to a cd so i can listen to it in my car then dont know if itd be logical.

a few more years and thatd be less an issue because yeah more cars will have usb's cuz its pretty much standard on new cars now. problem is, not everyone buys a new car.

definitely love the exclusive content, dont understand how the new songs would be uploaded onto it.

or does it give you access to a site??

so happy its actually a unique usb and not just a standard usb with ur music, so thumbs up on that.

on a general note i think the only way for usb's to became a viable alternative for cds would be their portability. the size has to be minimal, smaller than normal thumbdrives but a standard size that would allow for standard cases to be made to store them. then yeah it should be easy to transition audio devices to have usb ports.

so like the vision.

funny though, its like going back to cartridges, 8-tracks and nes lol plugging in a device and it stick out halfway, i dont like it on my computer, always afraid ill bump it.

i say thumbs up on this though, just lower the price

you made a special preorder/offer thing where you would bundle the usb and cd together? since the usb thing is obviously aimed at your core fanbase i'm sure that shouldn't be a problem and maybe making that one set price around $35 maybe? and if some people want just the usb stick let them pay the 20-30 for it...

production would probably cost more with the USB stick. wooden USB stick? tempting, but nah. especially since the material can't be copied to the computer like you said (in post 26)? that's not appealing.

>im putting albulm out on feb. 26 on USB stick.
>NEW AMERYKAH pt 1 FOURTH WORLD WAR
>
>25-30 buks a pop

the price seems kinda steep but if it's limited edition.
on an erykah branded usb drive, that sounds good.
but if you wanna cut costs. just put it on a regular joint.
or try to get a company to get behind it like sandisk or ATP or something.

>
>the content will include :
>.albulm
>.full albulm art work
>.bonus trk
>.videos 1&2
>.video comentary of new amerykah pts 1&2
>
>and on the 26 of each month (march - dec.) ,
> a song from NEW AMERYKAH pt 2 RETURN OF THE ANKH (10 songs)
>will be uploaded unto the stick.
>+ other bonus material along with each song.

that's actually really ambitious. i'd like to see how it pans out.

>
>how do you think that would fair?

in a limited edition, sure. us geeks would dig it and the fans def will.

>how many peeps would be interested in this?

i would.

>pros / cons?

pros: it's fresh and new. your fans will definitely cop.
cons: the cost. whether it'll be a limited edition or not would be the question. also sound quality. BUT you have to keep in mind. a majority of people wouldn't be able to tell the difference from CD quality or flac or mp4 or whatever. BUT at the same time you're gonna have audiophiles that have crazy systems and they wanna hear every instrument and tick. also the size is gonna be an issue. new content on top of the video? unless the video is mad compressed, there's gonna be a slight issue with the video sizes. BUT i dont' think people will mind the video compressed...i mean...we holler at youtube so much online, we wouldn't care.

>what could i add or take away?

maybe some live footage in place of the commentary. save the commentary for youtube maybe? really you could take away anything and it'll still seem like a great project to play around with.
>
>badu

thanks for looking for our input tho.
can't wait for the new album

It was a format I can work with on iTunes. Everything I get becomes digital anymore. But, the idea sounds really cool.

While we're at it, anything planned with iTunes? Many times, artists will release exclusive tracks (The Roots did this with Game Theory), some form of video, or something to make the deal sweeter.

there's a very clever kid in our area I see from time to time.

Says he gets a ton of these freebie 1Gb drives from trade shows and online deals and various places and he usually got all the newest movies loaded up, ready to hand out. Says he banks about $150/day on campus, but I find that a stretch.

obviously the big concern would be quality....FLAC, 320, 256 and so on and so on.....then i would think next would be how easily would it be spread around though???? i mean ya'know it's a lot cats out there that's just gonna let er'body they know get a copy.....especially if it's already in a digital format......then the question of DRM comes into play ya know.....and how will the new songs be received on the 26th???? via website???? will it be passcoded or freely available?????

i think out of all the recommendations i've read so far the one i'd like to see opposed to the usb stick is perhaps a limited edition New Amerykah iPod...the device could be designed wit some of that fly ass artwork for the new album and you could have like four different themes.....all of the content that you've mentioned would be already on there and the new songs could be release via iTunes....i know i would be in favor of that route........but of course er'body doesn't vibe wit Apple (The Evil Empire) like that.....but either way i'm gon be in line on the 26th......peace!

innovation!

i think locking the tracks to the key works for your average consumer, but the geeky ones have plenty of options with audio and video capture software to reproduce it anyways (usually crappy quality).

how do you quantify the gains from the security measures vs. how long it takes for someone to hack and post the songs and the how-to?

Though paying 20+ for music is definitely steep for me, I think I'll do it in this case. I understand that we will basically be paying in advance for the second album so...that's that...

My questions are: How are the new songs going to be uploaded directly to USB stick and will they be able to d'load directly to a computer?

Like other people have said, I NEED to be able to have it on the iPod and so I really hope listeners will be able to transfer to tracks to their computers. If this isn't possible I don't know how well the idea will fly. I think the stick is going to somehow have to be as or more functional than a CD to get off the ground.

Maybe you could trying having the tracks only being associated with 1 or 2 computers (iTunes downloads have this sort of thing) so passing the USB around to people who haven't bought the goods wouldn't get so out of hand.

It's going to be hard to drop the CD for a USB stick...I'm gonna be straight up honest...but I think it's a good move forward for music.

long time lurker...short time okayplayer.

Has there been any confirmation on WHERE To buy? I've already pre-ordered the CD, but want to know where to pre-order the USB stick.

Also if the second run is gonna be shaped like an Ankh, I might wait for that one instead of getting just a plain one with the picture of the Ankh burned into it.

Let me know!

Perhaps we should not have encouraged them to use cordless microphones, for they have walked too far from the source and are emitting a lesser frequency

like the concept

320k LAME encoded mp3 or better (FLAC, WAV) is essential

bonus material is what makes this a must

but how will it work? will they be shipped with Pt.1 and all extras loaded? How will Pt.2 and associated extras be acquired by the usb holder?

the inability to drag the files off n put em on your player of choice is wack

pirates will still be pirates, and rip the album from cd etc.

i will buy the usb stick cos i'm a geek and hopefully it will reach me.

I'll also buy the CD and the vinyl for reason stated above.

I'm still waiting on this pink vinyl, E... still gonna happen?

I think the concept is great. Here's my input. Hope you find it helpful.

- DRM
Honestly, why bother with DRM. People that plan on putting it online will do so, anyway, why make life more difficult for everyone else?

- Price
As many free 1GB sticks that get handed out a year, I'm sure you can grab a bulk amount of 512 sticks on the super-cheap and hopefully keep the price under the $25 mark.

- Monthly Updates
I'd be fine with software that would check for the updates and auto-download them to the drive. I think the best way to do this is make a universal tool that does this for all the artists on the label (or all artists in general), instead of making me install software for every album that decides to use this marketing method.

- Audio Quality
I suggest sticking with 256kbps MP3 or AACs (for iTunes and most other players). I think in the end what we'd actually be paying for is the album updates as well as the collectable drive. Maybe offer lossless downloads on your website for those that really need them (like someone else suggested, use the usb stick to act as a dongle key to the website, or serialize the sticks and make us use the serial to get to the site)
