didn't buy one strictly because of any specific system...just wanted better picture quality in general. Only TV I really watch is on local channels, so I get those with OTA HD. Otherwise, I watch DVD's or play games, which benefit from 480p/720p/1080i.
My current consoles are a 360 and...dreamcast. Both hooked up with VGA.

I pretty much got it just for my games since I don't watch TV much, but it's also great for football (and Blu-Rays once I get my PS3).
I can't speak for PS3, but 360 games on standard def don't look much better than Xbox games imo. I though Perfect Dark Zero was kinda ugly until I played it in HD.
Plus a lot of games use tiny tiny white font that is very readable on HDTVs but you can't see at all on SDTVs (PGR, Lost Planet, Dead Rising, etc.)
i got a PS3 and didn't have an HDTV until a few months ago. the PS3 didn't look that great until i got the HDTV. playing NBA 2k7 in standard def, i could barely make out the scores. in HD, its a whole different story. shit looks ridiculous. i got an HDTV bc i was planning on getting one anyway, but the PS3 helped. if you're planning on buying an HDTV, id check out www.secondact.com i bought my Sharp there refurbished, shit was mad cheap and came good as new.

as a reward to myself. easily one of the best purchases i've ever made. i only had ps2 at the time, but remember being blown away for months by the quality of hd programming.
now, i'm starting to become more of a hd snob. i'll turn on my tv and get disgusted at the tiling or color of a broadcast (nbc sunday night nfl), or the fact that they're showing upconverted sd feeds of sporting events.
i got a 360 at the start of 2006 and it's been amazing. another one of the best purchases ever made, even though at the time i thought it might not be worth it. i easily overcame my buyer's remorse and have spent many hours in front of the tv playing with friends.
other people that i know with 360 and no hdtv don't seem to enjoy it as much, and they are rarely online. it might be more of a personality thing where they don't value the gaming experience enough to play heavily, or spend the $ on the big tv, but it definitely seems like they're not enjoying the 360 as much as they could.

Cool, thats pretty much what I wanted to know. I'm thinking its about time I saved up and copped a HD set as a graduation gift for myself and then a 360 later on. It's good to know that it makes a difference as far as just watching TV too even though I don't do much of that.
