late pass me, or delete if need be. but i couldnt find this posted.

Apple holding 'special event' on Sept. 5
Posted by Tom Krazit

"The beat goes on" on September 5 in San Francisco, where Apple will hold a "special event" presumably to introduce new iPods.

As usual, Apple avoided directly stating what's on tap, but the use of the Cover Flow album artwork and Apple's latest iPod ads rather heavily suggests that we're in store for an iPod/iTunes-related event. Ars Technica reported last week that Apple was planning an event for the 5th, and several reports have surfaced in recent weeks implying that Apple's about to refresh its iPod lineup.

CNET will be there in force, so stay tuned for further news. The event starts at 10 a.m. on the 5th at San Francisco's Moscone Center, home to Macworld and the Worldwide Developers' Conference.

It appears that it's time for new iPods, according to Apple's latest 'special event' invitation.

http://news.com.com/Will+the+beat+go+on+with+a+new+iPod/2100-1041-6205268.html?part=dht&tag=nl.e703

Several weeks of rumors about a pending iPod announcement were apparently confirmed late Tuesday afternoon, when Apple sent out an invitation to the media for an event on Wednesday in San Francisco. True to form, the company didn't explicitly say what was expected, but the white silhouette of a dancing iPod user didn't leave much to the imagination.

As the invite says, "the beat goes on" for Apple's iPod division. Almost six years after the debut of the iPod, Apple dominates the handheld music player market with 72.4 percent of the market in the first half of this year, according to research by The NPD Group. Even competitors such as SanDisk CEO Eli Harari have tipped their cap at Apple's run in the music player market, which shows no signs of slowing even though the company has made few changes to its iPod designs in two years.

"They're very good," Harari said in a recent interview with CNET News.com. "You have to give credit where credit is due."

SanDisk recently unveiled the Sansa Clip in hopes of competing with the iPod Shuffle, but the company is currently focused more on the developing flash memory market for mobile phones than trying to develop an iPod killer.

Two years ago in September, CEO Steve Jobs upstaged the late arrival of Motorola's iTunes Rokr music phone with the introduction of the slim iPod Nano. Last year around this time, the company tweaked the Nano and the fifth-generation iPod with brighter screens and more capacity, but left the basic design of those two models alone while introducing a much smaller iPod Shuffle.

That clearly didn't hurt sales, as Apple moved 21 million iPods during its first quarter, which overlaps with the holiday shopping season. Now, Apple followers expect the company to make more radical changes that most likely involve improving the viewing experience on an iPod and introducing that capability to the iPod Nano.

Playing music on your iPod is old hat these days. After years of disdaining portable video players, Jobs gave in and a month after launching the iPod Nano introduced a video-player iPod along with making television shows available through the iTunes store. Last year, Apple expanded its offerings to include movies, but video downloads are still finding their place.

NPD surveyed 11,000 U.S. consumers older than age 13 earlier this year, and found that only 6.6 percent of respondents purchased a television show or movie online during the past six months. It's not clear how many folks are watching videos on their iPods as opposed to on their computers or TVs via Apple TV, but mobile video is still very much a niche experience at this point.

That's what Apple could be hoping to change on Wednesday. The most persistent rumors over the past couple of months have involved a redesign of both the current iPod video player as well as the smaller iPod Nano to provide a better viewing experience.

Only the fifth-generation iPod supports video playback at the moment, but it uses a 2.5-inch screen that after the launch of the iPhone looks impossibly small. Several Apple-oriented sites, as well as a few financial analysts, have gone on record predicting Apple will release an iPod with the same 3.5-inch widescreen display found on the iPhone but without the phone hardware.
iPod through the years

Many also expect Apple to have a new version of the iPod Nano that supports video playback. It's not clear at all how this might be accomplished while preserving the diminutive size of the iPod Nano.

The iPod Nano currently comes with a 1.5-inch screen. If Apple made a Nano with a larger screen, that would force some design tradeoffs. One site, 9to5mac.com, briefly published photos of a video-player iPod Nano that was shorter and wider than the current version in order to accommodate the larger screen. The site said Apple's legal department requested the removal of the images, which doesn't necessarily mean that design is legitimate but certainly doesn't rule it out, either.

Given that the slim profile of the iPod Nano is one of its biggest attributes, it might seem odd that Apple would mess with the design. But Apple was quite willing to shelve its most popular iPod in 2005--the iPod Mini--to make way for the iPod Nano, and there's no reason to think the company has lost confidence in its ability to pull off a similar transition.

The key to these new iPods, besides the expanded screen real estate, will the addition of the stripped-down version of Mac OS X found on the iPhone, said Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray.

"Currently, Macs, the phone and Apple TV run on (Mac OS), and with these OS-based (iPods), Apple would have an entire line of consumer electronics products based on (Mac OS)," Munster wrote.

Using Mac OS on these new iPods would allow Apple to use the touch-screen interface on the iPhone on the new iPods as well, according to a report from AppleInsider. The idea here would be to mimic the iPhone and maximize the area of the device dedicated to the screen by using a virtual click-wheel, instead of the physical one currently found on the iPod and the iPod Nano.

The fifth-generation iPod and the iPod Nano are getting long in the tooth, with no major updates since 2005. Last year's announcements were mostly cosmetic, with new colors and more capacity. And while iPods still dominate the landscape, new designs that could feature more storage, better screens or even wireless capabilities a la Microsoft's Zune could prompt upgrades and increased sales of television shows and movies through the iTunes Store.

But, of course, there's usually one more thing at an Apple event. The buzz is building that this time, Apple's finally ready to announce the availability of the entire catalog of The Beatles on the iTunes Store.

Hints have been building for months, since Apple and Apple Corps, The Beatles' record label, settled their trademark dispute. Jobs has used Beatles songs and albums in his keynotes, Paul McCartney and the estate of John Lennon have signed deals for their solo works, and conspiracy theorists were busy at work noting the message on Apple's invitation, "the beat goes on," was the last phrase in the 1970 press release that signaled the end of The Beatles as a group.
Now on News.com
Photos: Voyager still raving after 30 years Reinventing the (front) wheel Nokia's new chorus of tuneful phones Extra: NASA says astronauts didn't fly drunk

Of course, that was also a huge hit by Sonny and Cher. And one report is already debunking Beatles-to-iTunes rumors. In any event, there's a decent chance that Apple could use Wednesday's event to announce enhancements to iTunes that could include ringtones for iPhones, more movies available for purchase, or the ability to purchase songs or shows directly from an iPhone or wireless iPod.

It's been a busy year for Apple, with the launch of the iPhone and the push to get Leopard, the next version of Mac OS X, out on time. With all the new hardware launches this year, Apple must be careful to remember that much of its success comes from Mac OS X, Munster said.

"Instead of diversifying its business too dramatically, as some have argued, we believe Apple is focusing its business," if it follows through on putting Mac OS X inside the new iPods, Munster wrote.

Apple media events are pretty disappointing these days. It's like all people want is more gadgets and updated designs and more apps ported to Windows (come on, bring iPhoto over, already so I can die in peace)

I say we get the following:

- Nano design and memory updates
- iPod software update to allow some ritzy new features (coverflow?)
- New iTunes Plus initiative, attempting to make a ton of the iTMS available in the Plus option within 1 year.
- Beatles added to the library in standard AND iTunes Plus

If they DO announce the supposed iPod Touch (or 7g iPods), then they will only be announced and not available till some time in November.

It'd be nice to believe that we could rush to the Apple Store after the event and buy it, but that's not Apple's style. Never has been and never will be.

I didn't say all of it and I didn't say it was going to get done by next Wednsday.

I said "initiative", meaning they're going to probably start throwing support and hype behind the iTunes Plus. Maybe an advertising campaign and they might start throwing some "convincing dollars" towards big labels to get them to start putting more stuff out in the Plus format.

And it's not about converting the current library, it's about adding the rest of it in the Plus format.

Please also read, since you clearly need to -> http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/iTunesPlusFAQPage

damn near everything they release is released immediately. the only thing they didn't do was the iphone because the FCC records would give it away before they announced it. When they have a new OS they announce that early for developers but damn near everything else you can run out and get.

WEB EXCLUSIVE
By Brian Braiker
Newsweek
Updated: 8:04 a.m. ET Sept 4, 2007

Sept. 4, 2007 - “The beat goes on.” At least that’s what Apple told select members of the media in an invitation to some sort of announcement on Sept 5. The words appeared on the invite just under a picture of the iconic silhouetted iPod dancer, holding a fifth-generation model of the device. The image is centered over six album covers, launching Apple watchers worldwide into fevered speculation that the next-generation iPod will be unveiled this Wednesday.

There are few gadgets that inspire the passion, devotion and, sometimes, the ire of consumers more than the iPod. So it didn’t take long for the rumor mill to spin furiously out of control last week over what a new, much-needed iteration of the digital music player would look like. Here are our favorites. Of course this is all wildly irresponsible gossip and hearsay. But it’s fun:

Goodbye clickwheel, hello touchscreen. Apple manufactures its digital music players in Taiwan, where sources claim to have seen the full-screen video iPod with a touch-screen panel that flips its display horizontally or vertically depending on how you orient the device. Think of it as the iPhone without the phone.

A new engine under the hood. Running on a stripped-down version of Mac OS would turn the iPod from a mere media player into a mini-computer that Apple could develop more software and services for. Along with the new operating system the new toy may well come equipped with wireless capabilities that allow the user to buy songs directly from iTunes on their iPod—no laptop or desktop needed. Gee, we wonder if WiFi capabilities will hurt holiday sales of Microsoft’s Zune. Ha!

The Beatles catalog on iTunes. Apple may be about to stop selling NBC television shows at the iTunes store this week, but all signs point to the possibility that the Fab Four’s oeuvre will finally be available for purchase. “The beat goes on,” emblazoned across the Apple invitation, is also apparently the last phrase on the last ever Beatles press release. Resolving the legal tussle over the Apple name (which the iPod maker shares with the Beatles record company) was a long and winding road, but now—with solo work from John, Paul and Ringo already available on iTunes—it appears likely the Beatles are next. It’s either that or a special edition Sonny & Cher iPod. Now who wouldn’t want that?

A new Nano. One Web site briefly published photos of a video-player equipped iPod Nano that was shorter and wider than today’s current model, to accommodate something larger than the wee 1.5-inch screen. The site said Apple's notoriously hard-line legal department requested the removal of the images, which doesn’t necessarily imply anything. Also possible is a RED iPod shuffle, along the lines of the RED Nano. All iPods, from Nanos on up, could also be getting more memory—don’t be surprised to see a 100 gigabyte device.
A new iPhone. Well, a new iPhone for Europe, anyway. According to the Financial Times, three European carriers—T-Mobile Germany, Orange in France and O2 in the UK—have agreed to Apple’s iPhone terms. Just in time for iTunes 7.3 and its custom 99 cent ringtones for the iPhone.

An iCar? Martin Winterkorn, head of Volkswagen, and Apple’s Steve Jobs met in California recently to discuss a joint venture (the German magazine Capital said the new product would be a VW compact car outfitted with Apple products in a bid to appeal to younger buyers). Capital speculated that the resulting product would be a VW compact car tricked out with Apple products in a bid to appeal to younger buyers. Apple is also reportedly in talks with Mercedes-Benz to create a dashboard navigational system for launch in 2009. Vroom, vroom.

In response to Reply # 11

I knew that the first gen Zune was good, but not good enough. After a whole year or so of feedback and seeing how it did, Microsoft knows what to do with the next gen Zune, which should be dropping soon. I'm not a Zune zealot or anything, but I think it's safe to say that the 2nd Gen Zune will fix a lot of the wireless and licensing issues, clean up their software, and offer larger harddrives in slimmer cases (the bulkiness of the Zune was never an issue, though)

I dont know if MS messed up the Zune's chances for success from the jump or what but it seems like they completely abandoned promoting it all of a sudden.

Even tho it was more much expensive, the IPod still proved to be the #1 digital media player

So I have this thing I call the "iPod Curse". See, I collect iPods like some cats collect sneakers. And every time a new iPod drops, something happens to my current iPod, and I lose my entire library.

Well, folks, I share with you this news. My iTunes library is currently at a song count of zero. I was backing up my library off my internal drive to my external and then Windows hiccup'd and decided that BOTH drives had to stop what they were doing and surrender their contents to, what I just assume by now, is a troll of sorts.

This curse occurred right before the 80GB update and before, when they initially announced video iPods and then before that when they dropped color screens in them.

This curse is the sole reason I own a legit license for Music Rescue.

It's a Windows issue and an extremely rare one at that. If this happened to everyone, I wouldn't act like I'm special because it happens to me before every iPod release

In response to Reply # 0

Rumor has it the new iPOD's will work with flash drives vs. regular hard drives.

What's the difference?

And how does that effect a person like myself that uses their iPOD every single day?

they are much more expensive though on a $ per GB basis.

Basically, compare the original iPod to the current Nano. Massively more compact.

And flash is solid state with no moving parts. I wouldn't recommend jogging with a regular iPod but its fine with a Shuffle or Nano.

Personally, I cant see them going all flash as that means maxing out at 16GB (32GB flash is too expensive IMO). It would be a bold move to make but then Apple isnt afraid of making bold moves.

There’s a program called iFuturistic which lets you change ring tones and the carrier symbol.

Mine says Nintendo instead of AT&T, and the “Wild” by Dilla is my ringtone.

This is a load of crap.

We have been making ringtones by editing mp3's for about 5years now. Why is Apple acting like this is such a revolutionary feature?

"We've sold over 110m to date... and you'll notice the place where the sales curve is strongest is during the holiday season... today we're going to refresh or replace EVERY single product in this lineup to get ready for this holiday season."

"When we went about replacing the most popular music player in the world we took this really seriously. We think we've nailed it with the new nano. The battery life is awesome: 24 hours audio, 5 hours video playback."

"Let's talk about storage: a 4GB and an 8GB version. The 4GB version will come in silver, the 8GB will come in all the colors. The 4GB will be priced at just $149. The 8GB version will be just $199."

If you already own the song and just want to make a ringtone from it, it should be free. I'm not paying ANYTHING for a ringtone from a song I already own. No double-dipping for me, sirs.

My old phone (before I lost it) was a Samsung D807. I made my own ringtones by uploading songs via the bluetooth. I had to convert from mp3 to wav but I didn't have to pay any extra for them. Apple is double dipping and that isht is not cool.

A little video for everyone, that's what we set out to do with the new nano. We hope you love it as much as we do... That brings us to the iPod. The iPod... it's got a... it's got a funny name. It's got a funny name. It's time to give it a name: we're calling it the iPod Classic because it's the original iPod."

"We've got new iPod Classics: full metal design, even thinner than their predecessors. The new classic is starting at 80GB audio 30 hours, video 6 hours. And we've got the whole enhanced UI on the new iPod classic." Sorry, iPod touch is a no go! Unless it's a one last thing...

We're going to offer a slightly thicker one as well... and it's going to have 160GB." "This BOGGLES the mind! This new 160GB, which is far smaller than the original iPod, puts 40k songs in your pocket. Even better: battery life. 40 hours audio, 7 hours video."

"The 80GB used to sell for 350, now it's 250.The 160GB is $350." Applause. "They're both available today, they're shipping and be in stores by this weekend. We think you're gonna love 'em, and the enclosure is just gorgeous. So let's take a look at the iPod lineup for this holiday.

an iPhone w/o the phone.

There's a fine line between the two, that's why I think it'll cost close to the iPhone.

Then they'll probably cop again next year when it jumps to 60/80 GB.

You can select what you want to sync to your iPod. Just sync...oh...maybe 4GB of music and then sync 12GB of some TV shows. Then switch up the content each time you sync.

The answer is YES!!

Dude, I love music and have been collecting crafting my collection for almost 20 years now. I've gone from tapes, to CDs, to downloads. The whole point of having so much storage in the first place is so you can keep that whole library with you because, face it, life is random and you never know what you're in the mood for or need to hear. So just take it all.

I used to rock a 5GB (when they first came out), and my frustration with model was always having to decide what to put on it.

I don't want to pick and choose what I want to watch or listen to. If I have it all there, no matter what mood I'm in, I have the song I want. If I wanted to do that, I would have kept my old Mini.

I sure wanted that Touch, but not enough space for me. The 80g is as good as copped

i keep the 60gb i got now for videos, movies, tv, music video and shit. i could afford to get rid of all these DVDs. i bought it 2 yrs ago and it has NEVER fucked up. never been dropped, nothing. even the screen still look fresh. so instead of keepin it with me i'm puttin it into retirement and just loading new movies and what have you on it when i convert em. that way i wont have to cop an apple TV until they do that right.

i could get the new 160gb classic for music since i want to have ALL my music on that shit. i got a 250GB external HD that isnt exclusively music, but a large portion. almost none of the CDs i actually own are on my PC (waste of space) so if i want i can keep the stuff i actually want to listen to on myyyyyy

16gb touch. i keep a lot of lossless shit on my current 60gb so scaling them all down to like 128~192kb AAC or LAME VBR mp3 should take care of itself.

Flash drives can only get go 32GB w/o getting too expensive.

I think later (much later) down the road they'll have high storage for the touch, but not now.

The cover flow novelty will where off.

But you mix in the best options of the iPhone with the iPod?

As far as easy of use? Sure, the Archos can record for any of those video sources, but how easy is it to set that up? How many 3rd party software options do you have to have to integrate all of that?

you hook the Archos (docking station) to a TV just like you would with a DVD or VCR player. It's very simple. You use component cables and hit record. The docking station is sold seperate though.

and again I repeat, I don't put shit in my pocket but money and a drivers licence. I always rock it on my belt or in a jacket/coat pocket. Its not huge at all(http://tinyurl.com/2l5ds9). It's a video player, that plays/records video at 800x640 compared to 480x320 of the Ipod-touch and it's very limited video support. I think I'll enjoy surfing the net and watching video with one more than the other.
I'm in an Apple post so I expect responses like this. Fact is, Apple got yall nutting up over something that's already out there. The interface is nice as hell, very nice if I may add but over all it's nothing new.

In response to Reply # 189

I don't think anyone is arguing about who had what features first...the point is that Apple tends to execute and make the features work together is the most pleasing fashion.

I'm sticking with my XV6700 Windows Mobile phone because I know it's superior to the iPhone...but if Apple ever steps their game up to 3G and matches the features on my WM phone...then i'll jump ship with no hesitation.

I hear you on not putting that Archos in your pocket...but what you do in the summer time when you have no jacket though? Personally I clips NADA to my belt...shit is just a fashion no no.

That's my question. If you unlock an iPhone to use on another phone service provider, does it also allow you to use that provider's data network also? Say the other provider has a faster network for web surfing, will the iPhone surf at those faster speeds?

It’s like asking “is Linksy’s 802.11g faster than Netgear’s 802.11g?”.

EDGE is a standard that has to do with frequency and bandwidth, and there are certain speeds that you’ll get on EDGE.

That said, the shit is by no means as slow as people are making it out to be. The fact that the iPhone has a pretty powerful web browser that renders pages a lot faster than most phones makes EDGE somewhat of a non-issue. The speed difference between opening a page on my 3G Blackjack and the iPhone with EDGE is nothing. I’d suggest going into a store and actually playing with a few phones instead of just taking people’s word.

Additionally, the only company that uses GSM in the US besides AT&T is T-Mobile, and last I checked they hadn’t even rolled out their 3G network in most markets, so you’d likely be stuck with EDGE on T’Mo even if you had a 3G iPhone.

I work for them. It's slow when surfing, its even slower when your inside old buldings. I work in a AT&T Mobility facility, provisioning their data and voice network. The folks here have to go outside to get thier Blackberry's (Edge supported) to work.

Again;
AT&T facility
have to go outside to get Edge to work.

But please by all means support EDGE, the job security is always nice.

just that the iPhone doesn't seem any slower than any phone browser I've used. I'm sure when it comes to tethering speeds you'll notice a big difference, but I don't really do that anyway.

Impressions of speed aside, T-Mobile's Edge isn't faster than AT&T's

So nobody is unlocking their phone to use a faster network.

I paid $300 for my Blackjack and it ended up dropping to $80 maybe two months after.

Prices on components drop, products begin to sell slowly, competition heats up, etc.

I think the only reason Apple catches so much flack is because every product they announce makes headlines across the country.

also, Google should be announcing the Google Phone officially very shortly, so Apple was gonna have to do something in response to that, maybe they just jumped the gun.

iPod Touch + Slingbox = worth the price of admission. Much like what Sony wants to do with the PS3/PSP.

The new classic is still as good as copped, but this does give me an excuse to beg someone for the Touch. Used like that, the 8gig could even be worth it.

wifi enabled so if you're in a hotspot you can browse the web with safari. just like when you take your laptop to the coffee shop to check email.

what i was confused about was this whole starbucks thing. because starbucks is a partner with t-mobile for wifi, but he said you have free access at starbucks. but i think that's only for use with the itunes store through the iphone & touch. but what if you want to use the wifi to browse the regular web at startucks?

my music folder is about 30gb and my ipod died a few months back and i held out for a replacement because i knew there was gonna be something big coming to the ipod this year. but 16gb and now the same price of the 8gb iphone.

and i don't want at&t but iphonesimfree is making the unlock software wholesale to avoid legal action and the reseller could set the price at $200.00 for all we know.

Many Iphone owners are super pissed about that 200 price drop. I knew that was the price you paid for buying first gen gadgets. So I am not too pissed about it. I would be pissed if I bought that shit last night from an Apple Store. They are going to have to come off the cash pile and give , at least to the folks who bought within the last 2-4 weeks, some rebates or credits. Apple stock took a $5 buck drop after the Jobs' news conference.

They should be right about $250-$300.

Think about that.

Right now it's showing refurb-$350/original price-$599, but it hasn't adjusted to the price drop yet. Should either be Thursday or next Tuesday (when they usually update the refurb store)

Guess I didn't totally screw myself buying that new iPod 80gb last month.

i think they'll double the capacity in the iphone/touch next year and add the wifi so you can buy from the itunes store to the ipod classics.

i doubt they'd make the upgrade from 16GB to 160GB on and ipod touch in one year.

There's basically no intermediate capacity. This generation of iPods goes from 16GB up to 80GB. And AFAIK, the Classic doesn't have anything on the 5G except for Cover Flow and a new UI and more battery life. I'm not too thrilled w/ the whole "touch" fetish Apple has now. I have a hard enough time keeping my 30GB clean. I can live w/ my 5G for now.

I'd take slightly chunky form factor for the improved interface and ability any day. As is, the Classic will get copped, and I will wait until Jobs gets a clue (or milks the hell out of this, which is more likely) and get what will inevitably come.

it looks cool and all, but nothing here is innovative.

all these features have been available in other PMPs for over a year and offer much more for an equal/cheaper price tag.

yeah, its apple and its the biggest selling line of mp3/pmp players... but lets face it, they arent exactly pushing the envelope here.

sure if you want to compare it to Zune, this is a big blow to Microsoft, but if we are talking PMPs in general, its still not leading the pack.

i dunno, i guess at this point i'd expect apple to come up with something new instead of copying what everyone else did a year ago.

zune 2 zune is a good feature, but how useful is it when it only works with another zune that you may not find someone who has one? then if you find someone with it, what happens when you 2 don't share a common taste in music. it cant make my life better when i don't know other people with one

plus that zune 2 zune shit aint that hot when i can only play a song 3 times.

>all you can eat legal music however, has a nice ring to it

this is a good feature too, i would like to see more companies pursue it; but apple doesn't need too, they already have a near monopoly on the market. plus adding that all you can eat feature is something done to draw in a larger market share, it doesn't make sense for apple to do that, especially when itunes is a cash cow

personally i went with the iaudio x5l since it was a better product for me at the time

thats something competitors do in order to gain a larger market share.

thats ms added those features to the zune.

apple did add wifi internet browsing to the ipod touch, probably to upstage zune's wifi and maintain their lead. shit, cowon added video to the x5 to upstage the ipod and called it the "ipod killer", but apple later on put a better video feature...

230. "Open Letter From Steve Jobs to iPhone Early Adopters"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.apple.com/hotnews/openiphoneletter/

To all iPhone customers:

I have received hundreds of emails from iPhone customers who are upset about Apple dropping the price of iPhone by $200 two months after it went on sale. After reading every one of these emails, I have some observations and conclusions.

First, I am sure that we are making the correct decision to lower the price of the 8GB iPhone from $599 to $399, and that now is the right time to do it. iPhone is a breakthrough product, and we have the chance to 'go for it' this holiday season. iPhone is so far ahead of the competition, and now it will be affordable by even more customers. It benefits both Apple and every iPhone user to get as many new customers as possible in the iPhone 'tent'. We strongly believe the $399 price will help us do just that this holiday season.

Second, being in technology for 30+ years I can attest to the fact that the technology road is bumpy. There is always change and improvement, and there is always someone who bought a product before a particular cutoff date and misses the new price or the new operating system or the new whatever. This is life in the technology lane. If you always wait for the next price cut or to buy the new improved model, you'll never buy any technology product because there is always something better and less expensive on the horizon. The good news is that if you buy products from companies that support them well, like Apple tries to do, you will receive years of useful and satisfying service from them even as newer models are introduced.

Third, even though we are making the right decision to lower the price of iPhone, and even though the technology road is bumpy, we need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price. Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these.

Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple's website next week. Stay tuned.

We want to do the right thing for our valued iPhone customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to live up to your high expectations of Apple.

Steve Jobs
Apple CEO

dropping the price 2 months in was a blatent abuse of early adopters. Dropping a price a few years in (after you've perfected the manufacturing process and supposedly reduced the rate of red rings) is much more understandable.

Hell, I bought my 360 just before the price drop and I don't really feel like I was screwed over.

No man, I'm talking about the original Xbox...it had a $100 price drop in less than six months!

I'm working on the petition right now.

---

Seriously though, phones are notorious for dropping in price EXTREMELY fast after their release. Ask anybody who recently purchased an N series phone from Nokia, or one of the people who first got a RAZR for $500.

What Apple is doing with the $100 is pretty damn generous. No company has ever compensated me like that outside of the time you're allowed to make an exchange.

1. piss off those hoping for a large capacity ipod touch screen

2. piss off those who brought the iphone early, thus having long term effects. pricing products is an marketing art, but apple got carried away with themselves.

3. no intermediate capacity (30-60 gb) ipod. even through this might have other marketing benefits, where customers are less hesitant to buy from itunes due to a less of a fear of "filling up" a ipod

4. their got damn stock dropped after this event. at least i was right on selling fantasy apple stock some months back. this affects their ability to raise funds

They made a choice to go with flash over HDD. The right choice.

Sure - it was a mistake but the $100 gift voucher MORE than makes up for it. They didnt have to give anything. Those early adopters clearly felt that the phone was worth $599 to them when they purchased it.

What is the point of a 30-60GB HDD iPod when the price of extra storage is so cheap that it would make no sense? We were there 2 years ago so why go backwards? Look at the prices of the Classic. It isnt like there is a big gap price wise in the current iPod line up. The 80GB is aggresive.

They have $10bn of cold, hard cash in the bank. Why would they need to raise funds? The market is uncertain at the moment. Does the slashed prices mean iPhone demand isnt as strong as expected? Or is it a sign of real aggressiveness going into the holiday? Thats the cause of the uncertainty, not a lousy $30-50m gift from Steve Jobs to early adopters (all of which will be spent at an Apple store). By responding to the critics in this way will guarantee masses of free press and goodwill today and tomorrow , also highlighting that the iPhone is now in the 'affordable' range to many more people. I can only see good things as a result of this move from Jobs. It was a work of genius.

according to an interview with the marketing director of apple, more people are demanding flash. so yes, apple is appealing to demand, however there was plenty of hype for a large or medium capacity touch screen ipod. apple missed a demographic there

but this is a double edged sword. dropping the price 2 months after its release, which was overpriced to begin with is going to upset people (who should have known better but didn't). now some of their loyal base is mad about that. brand loyalty is important, this would deter some to wait for a price drop before buying another apple product at launch, and other related consequences

then theres also investors turned off that apple is going to take a hit with that $100 credit. then their stocks will probably dip.

while this probably would increase sales, thats the silver lining. however apple should have gotten this right from the start.

4gb nano, 12 gb touch, 80 gb classic. that looks like a gap to me. they could have made a cheap 30/40/50 gb classic, to appeal to a wider demographic.

then again cost per unit numbers aren't available yet, so i don't know if a 40 ipod is as profitable as a 80 gig.

well i have read articles that the iphone didn't meet sales expections, so yes there was a lack of demand. Even at $399, the iphone is still overpriced, pricer than some of the higher end smart phones with more features. I don't understand why the marketing team didn't realize that their phone is going to compete with smart phones, but not have smart phone capabilities or try to at least have at&t subsidize the price.

edit: i forgot about the stock price. if investors get mad about their stock falling, then they are going to start demanding changes.

That demographic you speak of is just waiting. Apple knows there's a demand for a larger capacity iPOD touch, but the technology isn't on their side yet. That particular player would just cost too much. The hype for a 80 gig iPOD touch will continue until Apple decides to release it. And there inlies the power of this company: Their fan base will wait! I believe this because I'm one of those people. While I love the interface and features of the iPOD touch, 8/16 GB is just too small. My 80 gig will hold me over until they release the version I want.
