"Why is SMB3 the GOAT in Video Games?"
Mon Aug-20-07 12:50 PM by Rjcc

I'll tell you why...

1. Mario and Luigi are back and they have a new system of maps to explore the world.
2. The Racoon suit was the best thing since sliced bread when we first saw it. I nearly shit my pants because I'd never seen something so cool.
3. The Frog Suit. When I got to the water world and used the Frog suit in the second underwater board I was convinced there was no better suit. (I was wrong)
4. The Tanooki suit. Killing my love for the Frog suit once I learned that Mario could fly AND become a damn statue with this suit I was DONE. The racoon suit paled in comparision.
5. The Match Game. This was something I loved to play as a child just using cards. To incorporate this into Super Mario Bros. was a great idea. I quickly learned to look to the corners to get started with a star match.
6. The boats on the Water World. When I discovered the extra islands in the Water world man this damn game just rocked.

In short I could be here all day, tell the crew why you think this is the Greatest Video Game Ever and if not why not.

Some may argue Super Mario World was better, but I think the sheer innovation of SMB3 was just head and shoulders above everything else that was out at the time.

I liked it and eventually beat it. I remember when it came out heads made a big deal about it. I still play it from time to time but it doesn't call me like SMB3.

was it a mario game in the traditional sense? no

was it fun/bizzare/unique/challenging? hell yeah, i loved that game. gameplay mechanics, challenge, enemies were indeed weird as hell, but it was the late 80's and cocaine was still in high demand.

wierd as hell, but i think its apples and oranges comparing it to mario/mario 3. great game, still like it to this day. i will fly through the game with toad btw, that little bastard is strong as hell.

In response to Reply # 4

SMB 2- funny thing is, this game was actually released in Japan without the Mario bros. in it. That's why the shit is so weird. Nintendo took a game called Doki Doki Panic and just replaced the characters with mario Luigi, toadstool and the princess. The original Super Mario Bros. 2 was released for Super Nintendo in the Super Mario All-Stars package and is The Lost Levels. Nintendo felt American audiences were too dumb to play such a complex game so they replaced it with Doki Doki.

The whole game took place in Mario's dream world, THAT'S why it was so weird. They even explain it in the beginning of the game.

let alone GOAT game. I'm not even sure it would be in my top 10.

Maybe it's one of those "you had to be there when it came out things", but going back and playing it there's no way I can place it higher than Yoshi's Island, Super Mario World or Mario 64.

It’s not that I wasn’t old enough to have played it back then, I just didn’t have an NES.

I was one of the few with a TG-16 during the NES era, and then I had a Genesis during the SNES era so I didn’t play the All-Stars version of SMB3 either. First time I played it was about a year ago on GBA and it just wasn’t all that impressive by then I guess (not compared to SMB World or Yoshi’s Island, at least)

the jump madden made from PSX to PS2. like the level of immersion into what we idealize as NFL football was taken to another level. it was like being in the middle of a pro football broadcast. it was completely seamless how the game moved from the field to the cut shots and back. not to mention the new level of detail that the movement of the players had compared to the PSX version.

even though it was given the "Super Mario World 2" subtitle.

It didn't have the immediate effect that SMB3, SMW, or SM64 did in the series...
