"Ok, so now that my internship is over... (OKP v2.0)"
Fri Aug-26-05 07:26 PM by Triptych

I'll be writing a new message board. The chances of OKP actually picking it up are slim of course, but I still want to write a next gen message board because, let's face it, all message boards suck dirty asshole. Especially in light of new web applications like Google maps/suggest, gmail, yahoo 360, etc.

So.. I'll be keeping you guys informed over the next few weeks about my progress. Suggestions will be seriously considered.

I got questions the first time I asked for suggestions about others helping, and the answer is that once I get a decent prototype running I'll probably be able to use outside help. The initial design, though, I think works better with one (obsessive) programmer.

I could REALLY use a list of stuff you guys think would make a message board better. I'll also be adding suggestions as I think of them, so expect to see this thread around for a little while. Maybe once I get a prototype up people wil be more willing to chip in...

/trip

Sucks when you're 80% done with a two page post and you have to go all of a sudden. You can email it to yourself or whatever but that blows. The message board should handle that.

because i've gotten plenty of useful info from folks that i don't like. Plus, it would cause things to get REAL confusing, because people would be carrying on with the convo with that person's opinion and info, and now the convo may not make sense to you because you never saw it.

DO you want a link to a board that I believe is running shit?

I guess you would technically have to join to see it all in action, but damn is it fly. So easy, quick, no new pages - EVER.

http://www.Pirate4x4.com/forum

I go by del3030k over there, if you get on, and want to work that PM feature out. The shit's insane. And free membership gives you everything but a custom avatar and the ability to host pictures on their server. You can remote link them, and see them on the page though.

Are you using Firefox? I have a little configuration that I picked up somewhere that lets me use the Google to search only a specific forum for posts. It's kinda rudimentary, but it's much faster.

And, I can use it from any website, meaning I don't have to be on Okayplayer to search the forums here. I've got one set up for all the forums I frequent.

So what kind of tech are you thinking about putting into this thing? I'm wondering what type of bandwidth difference AJAX would have for a board like this.

And if the few assumptions I've made about traffic patterns are correct. For instance, consider the case of replying to a post and then refreshing the page to see if there have been any other replies. Under the current system, the entire page is reloaded each time. With a decent Ajax implementation, if you're in the same post only the incremental changes would be downloaded.

So, take this post:
http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=4&topic_id=1265084&mesg_id=1265084&page=

When I checked it, there were 93 replies and the total page size is 370K. HUGE. If I make a reply, and want to view the post again, I load ANOTHER 370K. With Ajax, not only could I reply and not have to reload the page, but I could see other people's new replies without reloading the page. The only thing I'd have to reload are the new posts (~4K/post). This bandwidth savings would translate to real money for a heavily trafficked site like OKP, as well as reduce latency and improve the overall experience for all users.

On top of all this, I'd strive to write the layout using rather minimal and well-organized XHTML & CSS, which invariably saves bandwidth over table-based layouts. Chances are I could cut down the size of the example page to 1/3 it's size.

I hate message boards that are not threaded.

sohh, circuit board, loosie, hatermagazine, soulstrut, crowd control...

It's so hard to follow a good conversation when the message isn't threaded.

Damn dude, we should work together on something like this.

I actually started jotting down alot of concept stuff and i even got a rough draft of how it would all work, of not just a new message board, but a whole new way of building a community online through forums.

hit me up on the PM or AIM (istrikelast) for some details if you're interested.

i've seriously stepped up my SQL and PHP and DHTML game over the last couple of months for this other project and while building that, i've inadvertantly come up with a new concept for message boards.

like i said. hit me up on AIM

What I mean is, no huge avatars, no sigs with photo attachments, no fancy emoticons, no bright colors. One thing I love about this board is I can play on here at work on the low because the gray-and-white motif probably looks like an Excel spreadsheet to anyone who might give my computer screen a quick glance while walking by. :-p

And HUGE cosign on keeping it threaded.

I still like the idea of having different modes for viewing the boards: One could be in plain colors with no (or small) avis. The other could have pics in sigs and all the other annoying text formatting stuff that people like.

If you don't use ie6, firefox, safari, or opera 8 then you should upgrade. That's like 99.5% of the population anyway.

That said, the cell phone thing does bother me, so maybe I'm just blowing smoke.

something where you don't have to wait for the avatars to load, you just get the vital text.

Even on broad band (I was getting more than 3 mbs through Road runner), those avatars are a pain.

And it works fine.

You get into this RSS deal with the knowledge that it may not be the most accurate depiction of what's actually on the board. All you're asking for is a quick preview just to see what's being discussed on the first page. If you can't handle the fact that the topic may have moved off the first page, then look up the nearest suicide hotline or something...

and in case you haven't noticed, yes, I've been on boards that have it. I don't need a description of how it works, I know.

but I can't think of a situation in which it helps.

the only people who use them ,are the guys who found out about rss yesterday and want to find some new feeds.

and yes, I cna deal with not knowing whats on the first page, but only seeing the first page, is pretty useless. that gives you nothing.

if you stil need to open up your web browser, why have the feed? with a news feed, all the news is going to come across.,

with an even decently paced message board, you'll get less than 10% of the posts.

thats fucking retarded.

The BBC example is useful because the headlines move ALL THE TIME. All you're using the feed for, in the Okayplayer case, is to get a quick glance at the first page of thread titles. RSS feeds will have different levels of usefulness over different sites; you know that. If you want to spend time on the boards, go to the boards. You want to quickly see what's up on Okayplayer, a situation I myself have been in a bunch of times, you check the RSS feed of it. Since all you were doing was quickly wondering what they were talking about, why go to the site in the first place?

That's my take on it. And besides GD, I can't think of any board that moves too fast for this to be at least a little useful.

so, the discussion we're having about the bbc has SHIT to do with using rss feeds on message boards?

k.

I'm not talking about getting breaking news headlines, I'm talking about posts lets stay on topic. no duh the bbc uses it for headlines, so do a lot of other news outlets, for you to evne mention them is wildly irrelevant.

now, when it comes to message boards, every message board I have ever posted on, with a few exceptions, turns over the first page in at most 20 minutes for much of the day

your rss feed is useless in that situation.

well okp has been know to break news faster than cnn etc.
and usually those post are anchored, like suge got shot

On the real I get my news from here and if I want to know
more about a story I go to cnn or whatever

Also, he's not re-doing the okp boards, he just making one on his
own, so if he wants to make it an option for HIS board why
would you be so against it?

that shit moves so fast that you make a post/reply.... go take a shit, hit refresh and your already on page two.

instead of hitting refresh every couple of min, just have the boards do it automatically

most message boards have some half-ass way of dealing with this.

on OKP, you can search by author for your name, but the sorting is weird and it's a pain. A gmail-style starring/labelling facility would be cool. What I really want though is a single link I can click on to show me all the threads I'm involved in, sorted however I want.

BTW, I think you are completely on the right track wrt using AJAX -- it could EASILY reduce the bandwidth cost of a site like this by 20x, not to mention the user-visible speed increase.

Marking threads as favorites would be extremely useful. It sucks digging back through pages to see if any of the topics you have been following have been updated.

My favorite message board feature is the ability to label a user's
post as "noisy." If a person's post is marked as noisy by enough people
it ends up hidden or minimized from everyone's view unless they specifically request to view "noisy" posts.

All I'm saying is, right now the message board doesn't have a lot of features, but it works and is reliable. All I'm saying is, keep those aspects of the board the same. If it ain't broke, yada yada yada. Firing off a bunch of asynchronous requests to some app server is, oh I don't know, a little more involved than what it took to write up the current very simple message board (which fucking works well enough already). Go ahead and slap an AJAX powered interface on top of it, just don't bitch and moan when you get a hundred requests to fix your broken back button (among other things)

Only one of us worked at Google and currently lives in Silicon Valley making a good living writing AJAX-enabled web applications. Saying dumb shit like "hard to program = buggy code" just makes you sound like an idiot.

I'm sure you're aware of the benefits of AJAX apps from GMail to Flickr. These have been almost universally hailed for their groundbreaking ease of use. OBVIOUSLY there are problems unique to this platform as there are with any platform. You're just running your mouth pointing out wither well-known problems that have already been repeatedly solved, like the back button issue, or voicing ridiculously vague opposition like "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I'm fully aware that that's a very unpopular position especially right now with all the ridiculous hype it's getting. If you say you learnt a thing or two about it at Google *shrugs* my bad and good luck. But if OKP decides to go with an AJAX powered message board and that shit ends up buggy as fuck, you know Imma have to call you on it. Peace.

PS Ain't nothin "ground breaking" about AJAX powered applications. 3 words. Outlook Web Access.

http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/oreilly/tim/news/2005/09/30/what-is-web-20.html

AJAX is really a catch all term I'm using to describe the features collectively known as "Web 2.0" as described in this article. AJAX is only a hack when it's retrofitted onto platforms not designed to support it. Written from the ground up, it can actually greatly simplify development.

Also, Outlook Web Access is far from a true AJAX app, because it really only supports IE6 as I remember, employing every standards-breaking hack in that browser. I believe M$ is in the process of completely rewriting it if they haven't already.

but I will point out that the idea for the XMLHttpRequest object came out of MS (or M$) as you so maturely put it, which is ironic, since it was in no way a "standard" and was only supported on IE at the time, and yet it's now the basis of all this AJAX hype. Standards my ass. OWA has been an AJAX app for years, IE only or not.

Anyway, good luck with the message board, no hard feelins.

FORCE these mofos to stick to 2 posts a day.

Also, make it easier for admins and mods to cross-check IPs to weed out aliases.

In response to Reply # 0

the videogame Hitman
http://www.hitmanforum.com/forum/index.php?showforum=60

they had quite a lot of features i thought were excellent... i can't remember them right now though
it's 'Invision Power Board' v. 2.1.6

it's the first message board i've used and thought 'now this is a cut above'

i think a little applet that keeps track of all the discussions you're involved in would be useful. not just the posts you started, but the threads you joined in

Just web 2.0 the whole thing up, some how make it work with Google Maps, and allow us to post YouTube clips and pictures.

Actually... why doesn't OKP just switch to Vanilla?
