The NFL and Miami Dolphins have failed Tua tremendously, and he has a case for a huge lawsuit against the Dolphins and the league.
The league has ATC spotters in place for each game, and their ultimate responsibility is to identify or SPOT potential injuries to players from high above the field. Tua took a hit in the second quarter that went unacknowledged by the Miami Dolphins trainers and ATC spotters.
As Tua played the second half of the game, there was something clearly off about his play. He dominated Green Bay’s defense in the first half, but in the second half his performance fell off a cliff, and he struggled to get the ball to his receivers. His passes were either thrown too soon or too late, and at times it appeared that he didn’t understand where his receivers were supposed to be.
The conclusion from most people, including myself, was that Green Bay made the necessary adjustments that forced Tua to be inaccurate and premature with his passes. However, we now all realize that wasn’t the case. Tua was playing while concussed, so his cognitive ability was seriously affected, and that is what led to his steep decline in the second half. The disturbing thing about this is that Tua self-reported. Not only did the NFL or Miami Dolphins not spot his concussion symptoms during the game, they didn’t acknowledge anything after the game either. With all that Tua has been through this season regarding concussions, one would think that any drastic change or abnormality with his performance would draw urgent attention from the league and team.
They failed him three times in a row!
I cannot see him playing for the rest of the season, and I think he might have to retire in order to preserve his mental and physical health. Football is an aggressive contact sport, where there is hard contact between players and hard contact between players and the turf. There is no way he can avoid any of those scenarios.
