I think the Jazz has the worst roster, assuming every team was keeping their roster going forward... but the Spurs, despite some good young pieces, seem like the team least ready to be productive today. At least the Jazz has dudes we know can produce at an above-average level in the NBA-- who's the Spurs' second best player behind Keldon Johnson? Jakob Poeltl, who will almost certainly be gone before the deadline? Devin Vassell? I suspect the Jazz will ship off some players too in hopes in minimizing win total. Gotta think these are the favorites.
The Pacers are another team that will likely trade a bunch of assets before the deadline, but I think they're too talented to be straight up the worst unless they shut dudes down.
Rockets and Thunder are both fairly loaded with young potential talent, and both teams should be better than next year... but both are *so* young, and both teams almost certainly want Wemby. I think it'd be easier for the Thunder to tank than the Rockets-- bench Shai and it's a wrap on the season if 20-year-old NBA Chalamet is your best player. Rockets have multiple guys who can produce this year, but it's still just not clear if these guys are dudes who can *win*-- and their defense should once again be teeeeeerrible.
And I put the Hornets in here-- and I *smashed* the under 33.5 wins on the sportsbook right now, a preposterous number imo-- because a) outside of LaMelo, the talent level is lowkey pretty dire, and b) they brought in a coach that is great at maximizing talent by running a slow, methodical offense and physical effort on defense... which feels like a *terrible* match for LaMelo, lol. (I think there's also a conversation to be had whether LaMelo is a player who positively impacts winning yet at this point in his career.) Like, I don't think they're worse than the Spurs or Jazz if Melo plays 70+ games... but if they start, like, 5-10 or whatever? Don't be surprised when LaMelo "has an injury," MJ initiates the fire sale, and they push all in for Wemby.
Think the Magic and Pistons have too much talent to sniff "worst in the league"-- and both have pretty favorable "make the play-in" Vegas odds imo-- so the six listed seem like the best bets.
Who's gonna finish with the worst record?
