I think that loss and Wade making it clear that Bron couldn't defer the responsibility of being THE star is what motivated LeBron to finally hit that championship level.

Throw Melo in the mix and now we REALLY don't know who's team it is. Wade points to Bron to take responsibility... Bron points to himself but secretly wants someone else to take the load... Melo pointing at himself because he (in this alternate universe) showed up when Bron didn't. And the media and fans all in the mix.

The ring would keep the tension down at first but fingers would start getting pointed once they hit a rough spot the next year.
