If Barnes was obviously better than MKG, why was MKG not only the #2 pick in the draft but a consensus top three pick in every mock that year? Why was MKG drafted five spots ahead of Barnes if Barnes was always the better player?
Because, in 2011/2012, MKG was not only the higher upside player, he was the better player. He was consensus second team All-American (Barnes wasn't even consensus third team), and he was the second most important player on a title team while Barnes was the third most important player at best on an Elite Eight team-- I doubt any UNC fan would claim Barnes was more important to that team than Zeller or Marshall.
Barnes has always been a better shooter than MKG, that's a given. But he wasn't better than MKG at anything else in college. So add on *top* of that MKG's superior athleticism and upside? Of course MKG was the better pick in everyone's eyes at the time.
This isn't even agenda stuff-- I'm surprised this is even controversial.
