It's still a really violent game but you really can see the amount of "gratuitous" violence that has largely been removed from the game.
QB throws with a free rusher coming up the middle…camera follows the ball and you are cringing at the thought that said QB might miss the next 6 weeks. Then you see him jogging up the field. Then they show the replay and you see the linemen just shoved him or bear hugged.
Then you think about how any play like that in the 90s meant the QB was going to be driven to the ground with the full weight of the rusher, and it would not be particularly noteworthy except a commentator saying "DeBerg took a shot as he released the ball, let's see if he can get up"
Or receivers making catches over the middle, or high throws where they have to extend and instead of getting lit up, they are able to fall to the ground, or perhaps get roughly body checked.
It's weird because, honestly, I didn't even think you could make football THIS safe without it losing it's essence…which I guess it has and hasn't, I'm watching it and it still feels like football.
