>To me the idea that someone wouldn't vote for Greg Maddux or >Frank Thomas is ridiculous but it does happen. It's >meaningless though, if you get 97% or 99% of the vote, that's >way more than you need to get in so whatever. Unlike the order >of induction, I don't think that's a meritocracy, weird >factors affect that. I also think some of the writers see >themselves as having a constituency of sorts, some of those >non-votes are fan grudges. I get it for the most part...in the grand scheme of things one or 2 votes out of 400+ is insignificant. But the OP says does it tarnish the game, and I say yes. If there is literally NO reason to not vote for someone and a voter DIGS UP a reason, then it's bullshit, REGARDLESS of how many votes are in the player's favor.
Like you said, there is absolutely NO REASON why someone wouldn't vote in a Maddux, a Frank Thomas, or a Griffey, but SOMEONE FOUND one...that's insane.
It is what it is, but overall I >think the system is pretty decent, especially in baseball and >hockey. In football there is too much positional bias and the >NBA is just too permissive overall. They will let anyone with >an ounce of influence or a moment of excellence in, it seems. Baseball got exposed when Lebetard had his fans do his vote, and the fans ballot was somehow MORE TOLERABLE and HONEST than a lot of the writers. It exposed how many grudges are still being held, and how some of these writers have the moral highground.
I agree with you about football...the positional bias and making players wait because of that is bullshit.
The NBA isn't really permissive persay. The thing with that is that it's the BASKETBALL HOF, so more people from around the world, men and women, get in for their contributions to the game. It gets frustrating to see borderline NBA players sneak in, however it's refreshing to let players from around the world in for their contributions. I think they get it right for the most part, but I can say that there have been more hohum HOF's for basketball than the other sports.
I'll defer to you for the NHL because I don't know the voting process.
