"Poll question: Which will happen first?" Wed Jun-03-15 12:20 PM by Frank Longo
Roy is 64 years old. Assuming he retires on his own, he has at absolute most a decade of coaching left to do. 2025 is probably the latest Roy will coach, if he sticks it out as long as people expect K to attempt to stick it out-- realistically, since most coaches depart around age 70, Roy's departure is probably closer to 2021/2022.
UNC has not put a future NBA All-Star into the league since 1998. Since none of their current NBA players are likely to make an ASG, and certainly none of their current college players will be All-Stars unless they make incredible leaps and bounds, it is very realistic that UNC will go two decades (!!!!) without an NBA All-Star.
The draft containing Kobe, AI, Ray Allen, and Steve Nash? Only two years before the last UNC All-Stars entered the league. The distance between Kobe's draft and a UNC All-Star's draft is shorter than the distance between the last UNC All-Star's draft and 9/11.
I was going to make a complete list of the schools who've put a future NBA All-Star into the league since UNC last dude, but it would take all day. Instead, here is a partial list:
- Georgia Tech - Wake Forest (2!) - Maryland - Syracuse - UNLV - Ohio State - Cincinnati - St. John's - Illinois - Washington - Alabama (2!) - St. Joseph's - Wisconsin - New Mexico - Xavier - USC - Arizona State - Arkansas - Fresno State - Weber State - Davidson - Creighton - Louisiana Tech
I don't think UNC would fire Roy. He has rings, and this scandal will almost certainly end with him unscathed. I think Roy will leave of his own volition when the time comes.
So the question: will UNC put a future All-Star into the league before Roy retires? Which will happen first?
