then create an expansion franchise in, say, Seattle and skip the whole contentious tranfer of ownership problem? Just have the new Seattle owners pay a nice "expansion fee" to buy into the league, all 29 owners get paid, and maybe Sterling sues and the NBA can settle for something much lower than what Stern would getting bidding the team off anyway?

Surely the league has contraction clauses in its constitution?
