6. "RE: 2014 Pac12 recruiting primer"
In response to In response to 2

With the new ESPN 100 player rankings out, and as the 2014 basketball recruiting cycle picks up heading into the July evaluation periods, here's a look at how each team in the Pac-12 is shaping up in the 2014 recruiting class. Team-by-team recruiting capsules for the Big Ten and Big 12 are already out, while ACC (Thursday), SEC (Friday), AAC (next Monday) and Big East (next Tuesday) will be coming in subsequent days.

Note: Teams are as of conference alignment for the 2013-14 season.

Arizona Wildcats
Who they have: This winter, Sean Miller snagged an early commitment from ESPN 100 point guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright. Although he doesn't possess ideal size at about 5-foot-7, Jackson-Cartwright is a quintessential point guard who is one of the more gifted facilitators in the country.

Who they want: The players on Arizona's wish list are a who's who of ESPN 100 prospects, including center Jahlil Okafor, small forward Stanley Johnson, power forward Craig Victor, center Myles Turner, shooting guard Justise Winslow, power forward Leron Black, center Payton Dastrup, power forward Brekkott Chapman, shooting guard Namon Wright, center Thomas Welsh and power forward Zylan Cheatham. The Wildcats could have up to six scholarships available for this recruiting cycle.

Storyline to watch: Miller and his staff have been a recruiting juggernaut the past couple of seasons, and it doesn't appear to be slowing down. They will need that recruiting prowess in the 2014 class due to the fact that they may lose Aaron Gordon, Brandon Ashley, Kaleb Tarczewski and Nick Johnson to the draft after next season.

Bold prediction: The Wildcats will snag the best one-two punch in the conference when they land both Johnson and Victor.

Overall recruiting trend: Up. There are no signs pointing to a decline in the wave of recruiting momentum Miller has established in Tucson. Out of all the programs in the Pac-12, there is no doubt the Wildcats' roster is the most chock full of talent and there is no reason to believe that won't continue.

Arizona State Sun Devils
Who they have: Herb Sendek didn't waste any time putting the full-court press on the 2014 class. In the early going he has already garnered commitments from a trio of solid prospects at three different positions. First and foremost he corralled local star Kodi Justice, a shooting guard who is one of the prolific shooters in the country. Next, he landed a physical point guard who can score in Tra Holder. To help with some depth in the frontcourt Arizona State grabbed blue-collar power forward Connor MacDougall.

Who they want: Center Thomas Welsh, power forward Andre Adams and power forward Zylan Cheatham top the list. Having already locked up commitments from three 2014 recruits, the Sun Devils are hoping to land a quality post player going forward.

Storyline to watch: With center Jordan Bachynski graduating and point guard Jahii Carson possibly heading to the NBA after next season, the Sun Devils have some holes to fill with this class. They already have their future point guard in Holder, but it would be ideal if they could land a big who could contribute right away.

Bold prediction: The Sun Devils will go the community college route to pick up a big man who can make an immediate impact.

Overall recruiting trend: Even. Sendek has landed some solid classes with players who fit his system, but to stay close to the upper echelon of the Pac-12 he will need some playmakers to replace Bachynski and possibly Carson. The current trio of 2014 recruits who are committed are solid prospects, but they are not the caliber of Bachynski and Carson.

California Golden Bears
Who they have: Mike Montgomery received an early commitment from four-star point guard Ahmaad Rorie, who is on the cusp of the ESPN 100. Rorie is a talented floor general with a deadly pull-up game and the leadership to run a team.

Who they want: Cal is after center Thomas Welsh, center Idrissa Diallo, small forward Kameron Chatman, small forward Malik Pope and power forward Zylan Cheatham. Look for Welsh, Pope, Chatman and Cheatham to be major priorities.

Storyline to watch: The Golden Bears are looking to sign three prospects. They already found their replacement for senior-to-be Justin Cobbs in the aforementioned Rorie. However, Montgomery will also have to replace big man Richard Solomon, and his track record of finding replacements via recruiting is quite good.

Bold prediction: Pope will decide to stay close to home and team up with incoming 2013 recruit Jabari Bird to create a formidable scoring tandem in the Pac-12.

Overall recruiting trend: Even. Cal always appears to do a nice job finding the right combination of elite prospects and glue-type players. With Montgomery at the helm, there is no reason to believe that will end.

Colorado Buffaloes
Who they have: The Buffaloes wasted little time taking a commitment from local hero and ESPN 100 combo guard Dominique Collier, who will be an ideal back-up for incumbent starter Askia Booker when he arrives as a frosh. Collier has the scoring skills and savvy to play some point going forward.

Who they want: Center Evan Fitzner, power forward Joe Furstinger, center Idrissa Diallo and shooting guard Trey Kell are prime targets. The Buffaloes are in on a number of post prospects and are hoping to fill that need with their one remaining available scholarship.

Storyline to watch: Surprisingly, Andre Roberson left early for the draft this year, and there is reason to believe Josh Scott and Spencer Dinwiddie could do the same next year depending on their improvement. Right now the Buffaloes are only handing out one more scholarship to a big man in the 2014 class, but that could change with some early departures.

Bold prediction: Colorado's "want" list will look quite different as the summer progresses because Tadd Boyle and his staff have proven to be some of the better evaluators in the conference.

Overall recruiting trend: Even. Boyle has vaulted his program into the upper echelon of the Pac-12, and that should continue. Losing California recruiting ace Tom Abatemarco to Loyola Marymount, however, may stunt the Buffaloes' presence in the Golden State.

Oregon Ducks
Who they have: No 2014 recruits so far.

Who they want: Oregon's targets include small forward Stanley Johnson, point guard Casey Benson, shooting guard Namon Wright, small forward Kameron Chatman, power forward Zylan Cheatham, shooting guard Trey Kell, power forward Michael Humphrey and power forward Marvin Clark Jr. The Ducks should have three or four scholarships for this class, and look for them to focus in on landing a point guard, a wing and a low-post presence.

Storyline to watch: The Ducks lost their entire starting frontline from this past season, and it wouldn't surprise me if Damyean Dotson has a breakout sophomore campaign and possibly tests the NBA waters, meaning finding a potential wing replacement could be key.

Bold prediction: Dana Altman and his staff have done a nice job expanding their recruiting boundaries and will be right there in the end for Chatman, Benson and Clark.

Overall recruiting trend: Even. The Ducks landed a well-rounded class last season and are slowly but surely becoming a national program. They're still in it for ESPN 100 standouts Johnson and Chatman, and Altman always does a nice job finding hidden gems (see Dotson).

Oregon State Beavers
Who they have: No 2014 recruits so far.

Who they want: Point guard Bryan Alberts and centers Evan Fitzner and Isaiah Manderson are high on the list. The Beavers will have three or four scholarships to hand out. Manderson and Fitzner are high priorities, as well as a skilled wing.

Storyline to watch: The Beavers graduated steady starter Joe Burton after this past season, but next year they will lose a bevy of production in Angus Brandt, Roberto Nelson, Devon Collier and possibly Eric Moreland early to the draft.

Bold prediction: After snagging the underrated Malcolm Duvivier out of Canada in the 2013 class, look for Craig Robinson to use his East Coast connections to lure someone like Manderson to Corvallis.

Overall recruiting trend: Down. For the Beavers to remain relevant in the ever-improving Pac-12, Robinson needs to show much more urgency on the recruiting trail and land prospects who are more close to the caliber of former Oregon State star Jared Cunningham.

Stanford Cardinal
Who they have: No 2014 recruits so far.

Who they want: The list includes power forward Reid Travis, small forward Victor Law, small forward Jordan Barnett, center Thomas Welsh, point guard Robert Cartwright and point guard Casey Benson. It's pretty clear Travis is the No. 1 target on the team's board, while Welsh, Barnett and Law are not too far behind. Look for the Cardinal to fill all four available scholarship slots.

Storyline to watch: Stanford will be losing the core of its frontline after next season in Dwight Powell, Josh Huestis and John Gage, plus Aaron Bright is entering his final year at the point guard slot. Although Johnny Dawkins appears set in the backcourt going forward with Chasson Randle and Christian Sanders, another top-flight guard should be a priority as well.

Bold prediction: The Cardinal will land their future point guard in Cartwright as well as their most promising post prospect since the signing of Dwight Powell.

Overall recruiting trend: Up. Stanford is one of the few programs in the country that offers an elite academic culture combined with a much-improved product on the court. Dawkins hasn't gotten Stanford back to the levels of when the Lopez twins were dominating the league, but the Cardinal are in the hunt for some studs with Travis, Law, Barnett and Welsh.

UCLA Bruins
Who they have: No 2014 recruits so far.

Who they want: The Bruins are after a laundry list of elite prospects, including point guard Josh Perkins, small forward Stanley Johnson, point guard Jordan McLaughlin, power forward Trey Lyles, shooting guard Justise Winslow, small forward Trevon Bluiett, center Myles Turner and center Thomas Welsh (Los Angeles/Loyola). For the Bruin staff it's mandatory that they either land Perkins or McLaughlin. Look for Welsh to become a higher priority as well going forward.

Storyline to watch: Although the Bruins have had a terrific reputation recently for putting point guards in the NBA (see Russell Westbrook, Jrue Holiday and Darren Collison), they have been in a drought lately in terms of landing a top-flight point guard. In addition, Steve Alford will probably have to endure losing Kyle Anderson and Jordan Adams to the NBA as well as graduating steady twins David Wear and Travis Wear after next season. It's pretty clear Alford needs an elite 2014 class to stay in the upper echelon of the league.

Bold prediction: The Bruins will either land Perkins or McLaughlin to shore up their deficiencies at point guard after Anderson leaves for the NBA.

Overall recruiting trend: Even. With plenty of holes likely to fill after next season, will Alford and his staff be able to lure the type of talent needed to keep the Bruins at or near the top of the Pac-12? Ben Howland was let go in part because of his lack of attention to detail on the recruiting front. Will Alford be able to restore the Bruins' legacy in recruiting?

USC Trojans
Who they have: No 2014 recruits so far.

Who they want: USC's list includes center Jabari Craig, small forward Kameron Chatman, power forward Zylan Cheatham, point guard Jordan McLaughlin, center Thomas Welsh, small forward Stanley Johnson, point guard Robert Cartwright and power forward Malik Price-Martin. The Trojans have many options and Johnson is clearly No. 1. Craig is a fast-rising sleeper, while Welsh is coming on strong. Chatman would bring versatility and McLaughlin is the best true point out West.

Storyline to watch: The hodgepodge recruiting strategy never really materialized for Kevin O'Neill, and as a result he was let go. Now it's Andy Enfield's turn to revolutionize USC's ability to lure top-flight recruits to a program itching to gain national prowess. The Trojans are sitting well with a number of elite prospects like Johnson, Chatman and McLaughlin. Can Enfield and staff deliver the goods?

Bold prediction: Due to newly hired recruiting aces Tony Bland and Jason Hart, the Trojans will haul in a class that will vault USC into the top 25 of the recruiting class rankings for 2014.

Overall recruiting trend: Up. USC received a big boost to their recruiting efforts when Katin Reinhardt decided to leave UNLV after one season and pursue a fresh start for the Trojans. There is a lot of buzz around the USC program right now. Can Enfield and his staff capitalize on it and inject some young talent that USC is starving for?

Utah Utes
Who they have: No 2014 recruits so far.

Who they want: Big men Ryan Andrus and Brekkott Chapman are at the top of the list. As one scout pointed out, Chapman has some Tayshaun Prince in him, while Andrus is a skilled 5-man.

Storyline to watch: After signing a massive seven-man 2013 class to improve their length and athleticism, the Utes can afford to be more selective in 2014 as they will have no more than two scholarships this upcoming recruiting season. Can Larry Krystkowiak shock the recruiting world and land McDonald's All American candidate Chapman?

Bold prediction: After ESPN 100 center Payton Dastrup selects BYU, the Utes will land the underrated Andrus to add depth to an improving frontcourt.

Overall recruiting trend: Even. The Utes are in a difficult recruiting situation considering their surrounding landscape. However, Krystkowiak and his staff have done a nice job of landing prospects -- from both high school and the community college route -- who have added length and athleticism to a roster in dire need of it.

Washington Huskies
Who they have: No 2014 recruits so far.

Who they want: Small forward Donaven Dorsey, power forward Zylan Cheatham and center Evan Fitzner are prime targets. Dorsey appears to be the No. 1 option for the Huskies staff.

Storyline to watch: The Huskies will have to replace the scoring intangibles of C.J. Wilcox after next season, and Lorenzo Romar always seems to do a nice job of filling those needs. During the 2013 recruiting season, Romar replaced the departed Abdul Gaddy with McDonald's All American Nigel Williams-Goss. Will he be able to replicate that same ending by finding an elite talent to replace Wilcox?

Bold prediction: Romar made some changes in his staff to spark the recruiting landscape in Washington. As a result, he and his staff will land Dorsey to shore up the void that will occur when Wilcox exhausts his eligibility.

Overall recruiting trend: Even. Romar has always been one of the elite recruiters in the country. Losing out on McDonald's All American Aaron Gordon to Arizona was quite the sting in the 2013 class, especially considering the Huskies were leading for quite some time. However, with changes in the staff (T.J. Otzelberger comes over from Iowa State), Romar is hoping it will be the catalyst to kick-start Huskies recruiting again.

Washington State Cougars
Who they have: No 2014 recruits so far.

Who they want: The Cougars' list includes small forward Donaven Dorsey, power forward Josh Martin, power forward Zylan Cheatham and shooting guard Trey Kell. Kell is quickly rising up the recruiting charts, but keeping Washington natives Dorsey and Martin close to home will be priorities.

Storyline to watch: Ken Bone needs to win this upcoming season or it could be curtains at Washington State. The loss of all-conference big man Brock Motum doesn't help either. Can Bone and his staff muster up enough wins to pull Dorsey, Cheatham, Martin or Kell to Pullman.

Bold prediction: Bone is a quality coach and as a result he'll take his program to another level to make Martin and Dorsey take a serious look at the Cougar program.

Overall recruiting trend: Down. Bone and his staff signed a solid 2013 trio in Ikenna Iroegbu, Josh Hawkinson and Danny Lawhorn to hopefully ignite some recruiting momentum going forward. However, unless the program takes another step in the Pac-12 standings, attracting high-major prospects to Pullman may be too tough to overcome.
