At the time, they literally couldn't pay a 2nd round pick any more than $5 million a year. Because they were over the cap at the time, and teams weren't allowed to use their exceptions to sign second round draft picks. Because, until Areans, it hadn't been an issue. He could literally get more money from ANY other team in the league. So, like any other player would in his position, he took the six-year, $60 million contract from the Wizards.
