the spurs' mix of futuristic approaches and old-school sensibilities is exactly what makes them work. if you think popovich is on some bob knight shit, i just dunno what to tell you.
to me the "players' coach" thing has been redefined and the first guy to do it was chuck daly. you create an environment in which the players allow you to coach them. that's the reality of the economics and, by extension, the power dynamics of pro sports today.
some guys are looser than others though. ultimate "players' coach" is mo cheeks IMO. i hope he finds the right balance in detroit, great guy, brilliant basketball mind, just needs to get the right management style.
i've never been a fan of rah rah hardasses but in the nba they are already a thing of the past.
anyway, back to kidd. all i am saying is that the relationship with deron could cut either way. right now, i am looking at deron as a guy with all the wrong things going on. consistency, conditioning, body language, role within the team, public leadership ... these are all areas where he needs a lot of work. i have some doubts about kidd as the guy to do it. they go beyond their friendship, even.
And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
