but he seems to have turned his life around and is doing good things in his community so it's nice to see that have a positive ending. there's a 30 for 30 on him coming out soon. that should generate a lot of conversation here.
anyway.
I'm not anti-running. Everything is goal dependent so it's really about what you want to get out of it.
My opinion is that if you want to run, respect it as a skill and get better at it. That might involve getting with a running coach to have a look at what you're doing and where you can improve. That might or might not involve technical work, mobility work and strength work. Some people are just too stiff and weak to get into proper positions. You might also want to think about what type of distances carryover best to your sport or goals.
If you're looking for alternatives to running and want to get your heart rate up there are tons of options. Again, it's goal dependent but I'd have someone do strongman work...sled dragging, prowler pushing, loaded carries, farmer's walks, sledgehammer slams against a tire. A lot of this stuff (when done properly) has some inherent corrective/postural benefits as well as engaging areas of your body you won't hit with long distance running (even when done properly). It will get your heart rate up in a major way.
And FWIW I don't do any aerobic work. I just squat every damn day. If my knees could handle the extra stress (they can't) I'd love to add in some 100m-200m sprints. But it's just too much.
