If I'm a ref and I see a guy get knocked down hard, get up on very shaky legs, get beat back to the ropes, and then get his head violently snapped back 3-4 times without showing any real sign of landing anything back--I take no chances and stop the fight. Only exception is if the bell is about to ring.

Things happen too quickly in the ring to mull something like that over too long. It's always a fine line, but I'd rather be the ref that made the split-second decision to stop the Mares-Ponce fight than the one who made the split-second decision to let Frankel decapitate Maccarinelli or to let Jaro beat Wongjongkam into unconsciousness.
