"O_E check in: Canadian Hockey fans appear to be the LEAST RACIST" Mon Feb-04-13 11:49 AM by Orbit_Established
Relatively speaking, of course.
I'm all over the coverage of the Subban family. They are my test family for 'cism.
The message boards, the discussions. I'm readin'.
For non-Hockey fans, here are the quick facts:
- PK Subban is analogous to...say Carmelo Anthony...not quite Lebron, but perennial all-star caliber talent who is perceived as whiny and a slight underachiever. He was even involved in a contract dispute just now.
No outrage from fans. A few say he shouldn't whine. Most say he's *underpaid*, are excited for his return. Apparently they were chanting his name the other night, and he wasn't even there.
the "he hogs the puck" thing is a *tad* racist but Canadian fans rip on Ovie the same way/worse. So, if the worst thing I can say about Canadians is they treat black players like they treat the Russian super skaters, than NHL is easily the most racially friendly of all major sports.
- Malcom Subban: Drafted by the Bruins (We already went through this irony). Also considered a high risk/high reward talent. Got roasted in the WJC just now...some 'cism in how he called out by fans, for sure. Thing is, Canadian folks also defended this kid in EARNEST, and not on some white liberal guilt, but with HOCKEY arguments:
Again: anytime a goalie gets beaten up, they gonna get shit on, ESPECIALLY in a NATIONAL event like the WJC that Canadians take pride in. But the defenses and analyses of his poor performance have been spectacular. He is only 19.
I'll get to the third Subban kid and Seth Jones (!!!) later.
Edit: NOTE -- the key element here is that both the Subban kids have had TROUBLE. THAT IS HOW YOU JUDGE 'CISM. How do white folks treat you in the midst of CONFLICT. In the US it is ALWAYS worse to suck when you're black. ALWAYS.
