I think your idea could have worked. I don't doubt Coogler could have written the plot in a way that would have made Killmonger's turn believable.

Since they were tapping into the multiverse, I'm sure there would be a coherent way of explaining the change.

But, maybe they approached Jordan and he simply didn't want to commit long-term or for another reason.
