I was in a conversation about this last year, and when this part came up, I couldn't really think the same way.
Yeah, we can have this debate about appreciating the art despite the artist, but then, how would it be if the victim was one of your friends? Current partner? Family member?
I and most people I know would draw the line there. Fuck their shows, fuck their movies, fuck their whole careers.
So choosing the art knowing (or having good reason to believe) that the artist/performer behind it is a scumbag is basically admitting that the victim doesn't really matter to you.
And I mean, that's legit. You don't know them any more than you know the celebrities that allegedly sexually exploited, took advantage of or assaulted them.
Personally, I find it hard to look beyond. We're at time now where we're getting an overwhelming amount of quality media. Tons of great shows, tons of great movies, tons of great music. If I choose not to support stuff made by known rapists and sexual predators, luckily that still leaves plenty of things to watch.
I guess the blurry part is if you think the celeb is innocent and being wrongfully accused.
