This film cut out everything that made the manga and the anime so revered. Death Note works as a dark mystery, not a gory horror movie.

Also, the characters are not the same here. Light and L are both geniuses in the show and there's also a lot of time given to just going over the implications of the characters actions.

The only character that was adapted well (mostly) was Ryuk. That was another role tailored for Willem Dafoe.....but Ryuk is barely in the film.
