One on hand, you get resolution with Sauraman and Grimer Wormtongue, beyond just "They're now trapped in the tower. Leave them there." And the scene at the Gates of Mordor with Sauron's messanger is pretty damn cool.

However, other stuff just doesn't add much, and kind of takes away the "suspense." Like with Aragorn drafting the army of the dead. It works better if they meet them in the cave, then the next time you see them is when they show up at the battle.
