RUMOR: MILES MORALES NIGGAS!!!

http://collider.com/new-spider-man-movie-marvel-non-white-spider-man/

Just a couple of weeks ago, Sony officially confirmed that Spider-Man is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but not Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man. Sony has final approval over casting and the studio is currently on the hunt for someone “much younger” than the 31-year-old Amazing Spider-Man star because apparently, Sony and Marvel are bringing the character back to high school.

Back when that news broke, we also got a rumor claiming that Logan Lerman and Dylan O’Brien were being considered for the role, but now we’ve got a new detail from The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider (via /Film) that could take both of them out of the running. Here’s what Sneider said while on the Meet the Movie Press podcast:

“Listen, this is not set in stone guys, but I’m telling you right now, Spider-Man’s not gonna be white. Spider-Man is not going to be white … I am 95% sure. Spider-Man’s gonna be, most likely, black. But there’s a chance he could also be Latino. 95% sure, not white.”

Could that mean the new Spider-Man is Miles Morales and not Peter Parker? As someone who doesn’t know a thing about the source material, I certainly can’t comment on whether or not Miles’ story would make for a good movie, but making the move from Peter to Miles would certainly fix the issue of seeing Peter Parker’s origin story too many times over. Sneider wouldn’t confirm that Sony and Marvel are looking for a Miles Morales specifically, but he did add the following:

“I don’t think it’s gonna be Peter Parker.”

Per usual, this is a rumor so I wouldn’t get carried away with the idea just yet, but it does seem like a smart move. Sneider also suggested that this could be a good opportunity for Marvel to beat DC in the race to bring a black comic book character to screen:

“I really feel strongly. Sony has an opportunity to beat Marvel and DC to the punch with sort of a major black comic book character. You know, like I mentioned last week, the emails that leaked were perceived as racist in some quarters. I really think that’s gonna play into things.”

These are some bold statements so I’d like to think that Sneider’s got some concrete information there, but, of course, we’ll have to wait until Sony and Marvel reveal the official plan. We know Spider-Man is getting his own solo film on July 28, 2017, but before that, the studios plan to introduce him in another MCU movie. Odds are, that movie will be Captain America: Civil War and if that’s the case, we could get official casting details sooner rather than later.

While we wait, you can check out Sneider discussing Spider-Man on Meet the Movie Press below. The Spidey talk begins at 44:30.

I posted about it awhile back.

You do know that Garfield/RDJ/Ruffalo will have great chemistry
Feb 10th 2015
12
Looks like they're ditching Garfield.
Feb 10th 2015
13
That's unfortunate. Him and RDJ would have had a great dynamic
Feb 10th 2015
14
Garfield & RDJ would've been gold. Garfield is hilarious.

The Verge floated the idea of Miles Morales as the new movie Spider Man
Feb 10th 2015
15
Peter first, then intro Miles on one of the TV shows or something.
Feb 10th 2015
17
All this is contingent on them recasting the character

Miles Morales should be Spidey in the 2017 feature but he won't be
Feb 10th 2015
24
As someone who didn't like the last two movies, I'm thrilled.
Feb 10th 2015
23
Assume it'll be like X-Men and Wolverine
Feb 10th 2015
26
isn't Feige pretty adamant about that, though?
Feb 10th 2015
28
Better to have Spidey and some input
Feb 10th 2015
29
That's why I think Feige may not give a shit about the solo flick.
Feb 10th 2015
30
So if he's still kinda Sony property, how big of a role is Spidey
Feb 10th 2015
25
Can they work out X-Men and get Storm in BP?
Feb 10th 2015
27
I don't really think Storm is INTEGRAL to BP's storyline
Feb 11th 2015
39
What about Marvel doing Miles, Sony stays with Peter?
Feb 10th 2015
31
What studio would be cool with the pretender?
Feb 10th 2015

      Yeah, you're right.
Feb 11th 2015
36
      ^Exactly.
Feb 11th 2015

The whole point is for the one character to exist in both universes.
