I mean, as far as gimmicks go, I can understand how it would happen. Like, a bunch of decision makers looked at a script describing a man and a woman having sex and watching indie bands on a 90 minute loop and decided that permitting the audience to observe "yep. that guy's dick is definitely in that woman's mouth" would somehow make the movie less dull. It's wrong, but understandable.
