So odds are you missed some of this year's great films, performances, and moments. Everyone does. This is the post in which PTP regulars will recommend to you films that you need to do yourself a favor and see before you make your Best of 2010 list (and your Spilled Latte Awards list as well).
Some movies I'd recommend that may have slid under your radar:
Four Lions- the funniest film of the year, a satire about radical Muslim terrorists. It was only in theaters in DC for about a week, so you very well may have missed it. It's only available on DVD from Great Britain, so dust off your Region 2 DVD player or download it. I will be buying it the minute it hits American DVD... if it ever does.
The Ghost Writer- even though Polanski lost track in the 80s and 90s, the man undeniably can shoot a mean flick. This is a noiry type of film, one of my favorite of the last decade. Great steady direction, an outstanding score by Alexandre Desplat, and good performances across the board-- in a weak year for Best Supporting Actress nominees, I would hope Olivia Williams would make the short list, though it seems unlikely. This is currently on DVD and Blu-Ray.
Winter's Bone- I can't say enough about this film. Easily one of the best of the year, with maybe the best performances by an actress and a supporting actor that I've seen all year with Jennifer Lawrence and John Hawkes. It's slowly paced but never boring, and gorgeously shot. This is also currently available on DVD and Blu-Ray.
Never Let Me Go- Another slower and somber piece, this was perhaps the most delicate "sci-fi" film I've ever seen. Rich with emotion without ever milking the performances into melodrama, I loved this movie. It's not available on DVD and Blu-Ray til February 1... but if it's somehow in your dollar theaters or you're lucky enough to know someone on the screener circuit, find this film. If Andrew Garfield gets nominated for The Social Network, know that there's another movie out there which he deserved to be nominated for more.
Others? Please shout some films out, gang.
