When I think of a good performance, I think of an actor or actress completely being shrowded by the character they are playing. I don't see the actor playing a part, I see the actual character that was cast in that role. In recent memory, this has only happened twice.
The first is Ledger as Joker in The Dark Knight. There is something to be said about the make-up helping here, because if I didn't know that was Ledger, I would not have known. I didn't see Ledger, I saw Joker. Nolan went out and found Joker to play Joker in his movie and that's why the role was so successful. No, we don't learn a backstory, but that's not the type of movie this is. We aren't supposed to know anything other than the plot of the current story. Ledger pulled off a Joker that is completely insane, with no moral fiber, no care, nothing but an agenda to drive people to do the things he is doing.
The second is Walton Goggins as Shane in The Shield. He was great in all 7 seasons, but 7 is where he sealed the deal. If there was ever a disfuntional character who actually believed he was doing the right things for himself and his family, this was it. Goggins pulled this off perfectly, from the early seasons of his naivety with Vic, to the middle of him learning in all of the wrong ways, to the self destruction in the final seasons, Shane was as perfect a flawed character as they come. It's a crime he didn't get any nominations for this role in 7 years. I would argue with anyone that he did a better job than Michael Chiklis, who also did a fantastic job. Hell, The Shield should of had nominations for both Forest Whitaker and Anthony Anderson too, but for some reason this was never on any of the lists at the end of the year in the award ceremonies. http://twitter.com/phenompyrus
