"Comedians/Comedy fans: it's time for self-promotion" Mon Jul-20-09 06:30 PM by thoughtprocess
So I just got back from my first Comedy festival and it was one of the funnest experiences of my life. It was the Laugh Your Asheville Off Festival in Asheville, NC. The line-up of each show was awesome and I met a lot of great comics through it. I think my show had the fullest audience, so that definitely helped. It also wasn't a competition and all the comics could be laid back and really get to know each other. There were story-telling sessions at the bars after the shows. Everyone was just there to have a good time and it reflected in people's sets too.
Asheville is a really cool city too. It's basically a hippie town in the middle of the South. They're really supportive of the arts so while the theater wasn't always packed the crowds were VERY responsive. If anyone lives in that area, I would highly suggest checking it out next year.
Anyways, a couple weeks ago I found out I got into the Boston Comedy Festival too, which is the most exciting news I've gotten. This one IS a competition, and while I don't have much of a chance of winning it's the biggest thing for my resume so far. I also don't have to travel.
Below is my youtube page w/ my set in Asheville. I was unusually nervous (WAY bigger crowd than I'm used to) but it still went very well. If you saw my previous video, it has some of the same jokes, but they're better now than they were a few months ago, and there's a lot of newer stuff too. I'll probably update this thread with videos of my trip (I drove down w/ my friend), and I'll have some sketches coming out next month too.
