i notice audiences are a little more respectful at smaller budgeted/box office films and art house theaters. i'll also never forget the girl at cremaster 3 whose phone rang, telling her date, "i'm so ashamed." i've never heard that before or since at a movie.
at alamo drafthouse, don't they have food and drinks served *during* the movie, and per Nodima staff comes at exactly 20 minutes before the end to collect glasses and plates? i would find that distracting as well. really, i pine for the days i could go to a movie and the worst i'd have to deal with is people talking to each other, encroaching on my physical space, and avoiding spilled drinks.
