They don't give Tonya any character other than "I've been abused and bullied." They hint at moments that could be genuinely interesting but constantly brush them to the side to deal more with the one note that they strike endlessly. There are no characters to speak of anywhere, really. Janney is as one-note a grotesque as it gets. The only one who comes close to getting a character, oddly, is Shawn Eckhardt, mostly because he's so goddamn eccentric, but even then, the filmmakers clearly mock him at every turn.

It's also eyeroll-inducing when she turns to the camera and blames the audience for being complicit in mocking her and bullying her... when the entire script gives her abuser a bunch of witty zingers to get the audience laughing.

If you want to do Scorsese shit, you have to have Scorsese's touch. Gillespie ain't Scorsese.
