Just looking at some other beastly lead performances:
Annette Bening Taraji P Henson Hailee Steinfeld either lead from The Handmaiden Tilda Swinton in A Bigger Splash
I mean, that could be its own set of nominees right there.
Doesn't even include the bunch of insanely impressive young performances, including Anya Taylor-Joy in The Witch, Royalty Hightower in The Fits, and Madina Nalwanga in Queen of Katwe. They should really consider adding some sort of young Oscar again, because kids this year fucking cruuuuuushed it across the board (Lewis MacDougall in A Monster Calls and Julian Dennison in Hunt For The Wilderpeople would both be in my top 6 or 7 for Best Actor, not to mention Ashton Sanders and the little man from Moonlight).
But yeah, just a crazy year. Easy to understand why Viola chose to campaign for Supporting-- she didn't want to have to deal with all that shit (especially with the La La Land Steamroller in full swing, and Natalie Portman in Jackie giving the most prototypical Oscar winner performance possible, and Meryl still chilling there waiting to collect the votes of people who didn't actually see anything this year).
